Guys I've been a Certified Utility Arborist for 31 years and I've seen a lot. I understand the primeval instinct to to have a go at it. My advice, hire a professional, it's not worth dying. There are so many things that can kill you with tree falling I can't count them.
Appears that the face cut was done improperly, without a clean kerf. Notice how the tree moved and then stopped. Probably an overcut in the kerf closed up and held the tree from going on over right away.
Omg. Thank you. I've been watching a lot of tree felling videos recently and come across the term "barber chair" quite a lot and had no idea what it meant. And any ideas I tried to visualise, nothing was even close to this. Can't believe that thin strip held the weight of the tree for so long.
Ash is prone to barber-chair and sometimes violently ... IF you happen to be directly behind it when it goes you might be leaving this mortal coil. Fortunately this was a “slow-burn” Barberchair and no one was injured 🤕. A chain or heavy strap affixed above the felling cut is an effective option ... It won’t stop the tree from splitting up the center but it will “contain” the potential for injury. A lot of these ash are dead from EAB infestation and the center of the tree is hollowed-out. A plunge cut is of little use in this situation as there is simply NO wood to plunge cut! Thanks for watching
@@fabzacres-blackcat white rot occurs after the protective skins have been compromised Just clarifying that it's not the EAB that eats the trunk of the tree Just like the soft stuff underneath the bark
Not really. Depends on the type of tree. I've cut hundreds of burned oak trees due to a huge wild fire and got sick of doing face cuts so I tried going for it. Haven't seen anything even close to what happened in this video. On trees as large a diameter as this one in the video.
@@wthomas5697 1. How do you get sick of making face cuts? It takes like 5 seconds tops with a good saw and a sharp chain unless it's a real big tree. 2. how are you still alive?
Looks like a deliberate attempt to create a barber chair. If there was a notch, the backcut was higher than the notch, which increases the chance of barber chair. If deliberate there was likely a cable in the tree to finish putting it on the ground.
Something’s not ok on that face cut. I would have liked to see both cuts actually, that doesn’t look like a hard leaner from this angle. Did you use a bore cut? I use a bore cut for most of my trees unless they are perfectly straight which they rarely are. It’s worth investing in a saw with a longer bar.

I'd say a face cut was there, but it was way too shallow. The tree started going, then closed the gap and it stopped putting tremendously pressure on the backside, hence the barberchair. JMHO

there is no hinge there my friend ! That is a straight back cut with no visible wedge cut at the front. You can clearly see a vertical fracture at the end of the back cut, which will always end in a Barbour chair

It's so annoying that this is even possible... much more enjoyment could be had doing tree work if you didn't have to factor in the possibility of this happening.
