'Aeneas, Anchises, and Ascanius' is the marble sculpture mentioned at 9:00. Crafted by Bernini in the early 1600s, it is on display at the Galleria Borghese in Rome.
Thank you for the podcast. Very interesting discussion. Some important points: Trojans were definitely Greeks as well! They had the same language, religion, customs, same gods! Trojan war was a civil war between the mainland Greeks and the Greeks that controlled the Dardanelles! I think it is very hard to understand the essence of these two great poems without prior deep knowledge of the Greek ethos and psyche. Western scholars for instance distinguish Odysseus by his intelligence and capacity to outsmart his opponents but truly Odysseus unique characteristic was his piety! His respect to the Divine was what protected him from having the same end as his fellow crew. Odyssey as poem older than the Iliad presents the prior and more innocent condition of the human condition. Iliad is the later fallen nature of humanity with passions and destruction. Western scholars miss the points of these great poems in many respects misinterpreting where their really great value exists. Also don't forget that all Asia Minor up to Pontus was a great part of the area that Greek Civilization and culture was developed and triumphed from Homeric times until 1923 when the Greek, Armenian and Assyrian Genocide by Turks destroyed every piece of that historical presence.
Excellent supplement to my second time reading the Iliad and The Oddyssey. I often find myself favoring the Trojans and felt wrong for it given the Book’s historical back drop. Now I don’t so much.
Recently, Mitchell has enjoyed several reference grammars, but he has greatly benefited from von Siebenthal's Ancient Greek Grammar published by Peter Lang. He also notes that the Cambridge Grammar of Classical Greek is particularly rich and compelling.
5:35 I’m sorry is there something comical about reading Louis L'Amour? Too wholesome for you? Not in Greek or Latin? No 50 page rambles about the sewer system in Versailles or the anatomy of whales?🤦♂️
It is pathetic to listen to people that teach in colleges and don't know that the Trojans were Greeks as well! They had the same language, religion, customs, same gods and still there are some scholars that just don't get it, that it was a war between the mainland Greeks and the Greeks that controlled the Dardanelles! By the way Dardanus, one of the Trojans forefathers, was origined from Arcadia!

What book should I read about the Trojan War to prepare me for the Iliad? I'll need a book in English.
The Iliad
Thank you

What is Mitchell's favorite Greek grammar??

Great content on the whole👍. 👎 on the scoffing at my beloved Louis L'Amour!
Pope's translation, of course!

You are right, but the part of the Dardanelles can be contentious
