There is a special place in my heart for Bionic Commando. I like that there wasn’t a jump button because it added a skill/puzzle element to it. The twist at the end was also classic. I had never played the arcade of Bionic Commando but when I finally did on Mame I actually hated it because it wasn’t like the NES version.

Mega Man 6 actually had two western-created Robot Masters: Knight Man and Wind Man. Both were submitted into Capcom as part of a contest that Nintendo Power ran- they collected a bunch of robot master ideas and drawings from North American readers, displayed a few of them in a magazine feature, and sent the whole mess off to Capcom.

Isn't Little Nemo public domain though? Windsor McKay died in 1934 after all, well before the silly copyright extensions. I would think all they would have to do is drop the animated film tie-in and call it simply Little Nemo after the original >100 year-old strip.
Just to add: I never played this one back in the day, but I still would like to see a remake. Also include the arcade version of Little Nemo (not a movie tie-in) with it please.

I remember going shopping with my relatives for dress clothes and we stopped at the WIZ for something. Little Nemo caught my eye mostly, because I had, by then, become accustomed to CAPCOM’s traditional blue box look & design, and with the CAPCOM name being on the box, I just knew this game would be great despite the playable character not being too appealing.
Boy, was I in for a cool ride when I finally got home to play the game! Good music, okay graphics, memorable gameplay!
I am definitely with you on Little Nemo and the Dream Master receiving the DUCK Tales remake treatment. Actually, I read somewhere like one year ago that Capcom was entertaining the idea of remaking all their 8-bit DISNEY CAPCOM franchises. Here’s hoping!

Early Capcom games were sometimes ported by Micronics, by all accounts a one-man team being worked on part-time. It was the epitome of farm hand work.1942, and I believe ghosts'n'goblins were Micronics jobs, and the janky scrolling is usually a dead giveaway for others, as well. Athena and Super Pitfall were Micronics jobs as well, to give you an idea.

The problem with a lot of those early Capcom games was that they farmed out development to a contract developer called Micronics, though of course we didn't know that in the US at the time. Micronics has become infamous for the shoddy quality of their titles, but they must have charged low rates because it seems like tons of big Japanese publishers used them. Once Capcom brought development in-house, their NES titles got vastly better.

Bionic Commando is an awesome game. Tier A at least. The lack of a jump is one of the things that makes it so different. It falls in the run and gun category, but it does something really different.
1942 is a fascinating game. Made in Japan lass then 40 after the end of World war II, you play a US WWII fighter pilot where your goal is get to Tokyo to blow it up. And it added a lot to the vertical shooter, including the whole idea of floating power ups and bosses at the end of stages. Along with Xevious, it created the vertical scrolling shmup genre. I'd put 1942 and 1943 in tier A, 1942 because of the innovation it brought to the genre, 1943 because it is just a better game.
Ghosts n Goblins is B tier, at least. yes, it is hard, but it is also good.
I'm pretty sure they tell you about the platform cannon in the manual for Megaman 1. I didn't read it either.

In the earlier days, the reason arcade games on home consoles were vastly different even by arcade game manufacturers that created them is because of smaller developer teams and hardware; I was always fascinated by arcade translations or interpretations to home consoles from a programming perspective because I understood that there were just 1-2 people writing them to limited hardware; we, as kids just didn't know the programmer's names. We also understood that when it came to interpretations, we were critical of what was edited from the original game & what remained. The arcade translations were becoming more & more impressive each year on expanded hardware & larger game developer teams on Super NES, Turbo Grfx-1 & Neo Geo hardware as you already know. :)

I suspect that it is hard to understand what picking out or even renting a new video game was like back in the day when the NES was current gen unless you have had that actual experience. There was little to no access to video game reviews. You might get a few from a magazine that may or may not have been objective, you might have word of mouth from a friend of a friend who has a secret grudge against you, but it was usually a blind purchase . Games were expensive if you were a kid, parents weren't willing to buy them very often, a high percentage of the NES library was crap, and picking something good was often a crapshoot. Through trial and error many of us figured out that for 3rd party games, buying a one made by Konami or Capcom was usually the safest thing to do. There were other good companies, but Konami and Capcom both made enough games to have a good track record in our minds while others didn't have the same reputation even if they deserved it (Sunsoft comes to mind). Konami and Capcom were the closest we had to a reliably good developer. By the way, It was actually kind of obvious for me at least that Konami and Ultra were the same company just by playing their games, Capcom and Konami games had a certain look and feel.

    • @28Pluto
      @28Pluto 3 года назад +2

I was lucky to have a mother that thought video games were cool, so we were allowed to rent many, many games. But when it came to buying games, my mom would only buy games she assumed were quality and/or I would love for sure. (Mario, Mega Man, Disney characters, and most RPGs) Although we still had our fair share of terrible games that she would find at garage sales... For example, Hyde Lyde... I will forever despise that game!
It was such a different time back then. Magazines rarely gave enough accurate info to convince the buyer. You really just had to take a chance sometimes.
Thankfully, there were some publishers (like Capcom) you could usually trust.

Nice video John, i have to check out a lot of these games yet. Love Gargoyle's Quest for Game Boy, for me was S tier, and GG II for NES is A for me too, i felt it a little off comparing it to the Game boy one.
The only game i played and i was completely disagree was Section-Z, damn i love to the death this shooter, it's just a misunderstood laberynthic challenging shooter, you are obliged to write down the route to reach the end, maybe it's a little tedious in that aspect but i love the level of challenge have this game, it's very fair in my opinion.

I remember reading about Nemo in Nintendo Power and being so hyped about it then being totally bummed when it was released because the video store only had one copy to rent and of course it was checked out like 5 weekends in a row. Luckily, one of my friends owned and let me borrow it once he beat it.

Destiny of an Emperor. Ahh, that's my childhood. Only one rental place had it at all, but I wasn't the only person who wanted that game badly, so it was always a hold-your-breath moment walking in late in the week and hoping I could play this rpg masterpiece over the weekend. One of my best surprises was picking it up one time and finding the last person had capped their team at level 50. Talk about a power trip for me.

Loved the love for Willow, which is a forgotten and underrated game. I was surprised that Duck Tales only got an "A." I'd rank that an "S" because of how crisp the gameplay was and how iconic the music was. I realize Mega Men 2 and Blaster Master are gold standards for NEW music, but Duck Tales music was flawless, and the Moon level theme is among the greatest video game music ever.

I was playing ghost and goblins on the switch and was telling my gf I never beat level 1 and this game made me sick back in the day and then during that run I made it to level 2. I was like you just witnessed history. Thankfully now I can save it and continue from there. Only took me 34 years.

I'm usually with you on these but Bionic Commando was a solid S. The bionic arm was so much fun once you got really good at it (those huge leaps across the spotlights in a later level), and the end has you BLOW UP HITLER'S HEAD WITH A BAZOOKA.
    I mean come on.

For Adventures in the Magic Kingdom. I'm pretty sure it's a Jungle Cruise Skipper uniform. I'm a former Jungle Cruise skipper myself and since that was Walt's favorite ride I would have to assume that's the uniform they decided to use for that character in the game.

I usually agree with your rankings, but just one I'd change to at least an A (Bionic Commando). No jump, but that makes it more challenging, and a better sense of accomplishment when going new places (the Bionic Arm took a while to get used to). Plus the ending also has the date from exactly 10 years ago (most gamers know), I believe August 2 (today's date) right to the day :O
Man i had a bunch of Capcom games too....... 13 I think. Just like Konami, I only have 1 left, Bionic Commando. I also had Final Fight 1,2,3 and Super Street Fighter II for SNES. Another like, these are cool!
