As promised, I've compiled some full examples of You Say Run going with everything into a Twitter thread with video examples: twitter.com/RBKapoor1/status/899414698726006784 I accidentally replied to the same tweet a couple of times so make sure you check all the replies in this thread. There should be quite a few. And if you have any You Say Run Goes With Everything video ideas of your own don't forget to tweet them at us!
The Cartoon Cipher did you use the dubbed version for the Boku no scenes because you prefer it, or because you thought it would help the video be easier to understand for an English audience?
You say Run is something not unlike many of the scores in final fantasys xiv. Most of the newer, boss tracks are a dedicated call to arms. You say Run is the same thing. Dare to be great is not uncommon when you're going for that "Heroic" feel in songs.
I'm on season 3 ( just finished ) while rewatching it with my cousin on season 2 and rewatching it with my sister on season 1 so I'm watching it in all 3 seasons I can't get enough of it
I'm very happy this video of yours got such a burst in attention that i ended up in my recommendations. Your content is really delightful, keep it coming. Can't wait for more.
One of the biggest reasons I'd say this track goes with many action scenes is that it's written as an action scene would be choreographed. You have the appearance of the combatants, followed by the initial spar to test the opponent, tailed by the antagonist getting the upper hand, then the hero has a bout of introspection or an epiphany where they find their mettle, afterwards their true nature emerges and they fight back and slowly overcome the antagonist. Look at most action scenes especially in anime, they are choreographed exactly like that. However much like the traditional framework for the hero's story, it never fails to be interesting because it can be riffed on endlessly
Well, generic doesn't mean bad, just that it has a simple structure that evokes what you want to emphasize well. It's not necessarily what I'd call versatile, because it really only has one particular use/sequence. Simply, it highlights a conflict, a lull for reflection and/or buildup, then a final burst of energy. It's not like you could use this for a romantic or comedic scene, or really anything but some kind of action.
Sai Prime Dude, this could be synced perfectly in a romantic themed scenario. The song could be portraying my raging boner, developing, the blood raging with flurry as it circulates throughout my penis.
Vashu627 and this is where hardcore anime fans need to stfu ._. Also yes this is off but still, no ones gonna care about your correction lel even if it's NOT correct hehe...
Generic - characteristic relating to a class or group of things; not specific It's versatile because it can fit in many situations, but it's generic because it follows a simple structure of instrumentation and musical progression that other action-oriented musical pieces have done before. The video appreciates the fact that it's so simple; it's genericness makes it a better action-music piece than others, and honestly, that's basically My Hero Academia in a nutshell: a show that does every shonen trope in the book, but does it WELL. It's like a firm, soft cake with plain frosting; if the base is good, you don't need to be pretentiously "super-original'.
+hutchiskeol117 Deku vs Todoroki is not just about the action. The fucking hype, the build up, music, and emotions from that fight was 10/10. I fuckin' cried. I've read the manga and I'm so excited for S3. I cried watching those fights and I can't even imagine how awesome it would be animated. The Season 1 All-Might vs Nomu fight in the manga wasn't that great but BONES made it so fuckin epic. I can't even imagine what they would do with S3 when it's universally agreed upon as the peak of MHA. I'M SO FUCKING EXCITED.
The breakdown of the first episode's use of music was my favorite part of this episode. It was nice to see how the tracks were similar, but weren't the same song as, "You Say Run."
exactly. To be more precise; in that movie Shaggy is hypnotized so everytime he hears a certain word he will go from his usual self to his badass self or vice-versa
The MHA dub was bad... All Might had a decent voice actor... but Deku/Izuku had a terrible voice actor... doesnt fit his character... sub is a lot better
DBBiggestFan Hey thanks dude! I'm really flattered. Unfortunately every fandom has this problem. It's a real shame that people can't appreciate an anime, no matter the medium. MHA's english voice acting, in my opinion, is spot on and sounds extremely similar to MHA's japanese voice acting. The english cast did a great job :)
DBBiggestFan When I see a good dub, I recognize it as a good dub. But I honestly do not like the dub All Might. His catchphrase was ruined, and his voice just doesn't match for me. Maybe it's because I've only watched the sub, but maybe not.
i am wood I don't necessarily agree with your opinion, but you do have a right to YOUR OWN opinion. All Might reminds me of an old cartoon superhero from the 80s or 90s, so I really like his voice. I do agree that some dubs are lacking, much like how some subs are lacking. Basically, I think not all dubs are bad and not all subs are godly.
"You Say Run" is like the "Your Reality" from DDLC of My Hero, where one song is made into multiple versions with different things added to it and made for different tones, but still is just the same song mostly
Yeah, the dub is phenomenal, almost every character is spot-on. Esp for the scene you’re talking about, imo the japanese All Might used a really gross exaggerated inflection for the “Plus Ultra” and the English one fits better
This just proves that "Timing" in anime fight choreography is very important alongside the musical score. Everything came together so well in the anime.

Thank you for this. I'm not good at music theory, and I'm not really into anime, but this song has effected me very strongly, to the point where hearing it at all gives me that tightness in my throat and jaw and chest. Now I feel like I understand that effect at least a little bit. It really does seem to be a master work.
god. Recurring motives/melodies that reappears across multiple songs of an OST to invoke different emotions are just ... so impressive and make one really respect the composer of these songs having put so much thought into it. Just recently i watched a video talking about a song in Fire Emblem Awakening that does something similar: "Don't speak her name!" It not only includes a melancholic rendition of the Main Fire Emblem them but also it's own melody that reappears in the tracks that are played right after the first introduction of this song in slightly different contexts. There it is certainly not about going with everything but... that main melody if the song is haunting hearing it reappear in so many different tracks.
Also, shout-out to the Azura's Wrath's final boss version. The timing is just plain perfect, it generates so much hype and It has probably the most satisfying punch in the face in everything.
Whenever I listen to this track, I always imagine a scene from the games I want to make. The song starts after the villain scolding the protagonist for being afraid of his feelings. He holds them off, keeping them inside him. This affected him so much that he can't even use his fire powers. The song starts with the protagonist stuttering, and thinking on what his friends told him (like asking who he really is, that they never know what he's thinking, and that sometimes he seems like he doesn't care). He then questions himself on who he really is. Upon noticing that he can be whoever he wants with his friends, since he isn't surrounded by manipulative and cruel people anymore, he fianlly lets out. And that's when the drums kick in, with a grand burst of fire emerging from him, signifying the return of his power. (this scene is kinda similar to deku vs todoroki lol) He then emerges from the flames with a smile on his face and fierce looking eyes. He then says "Who I really am...? Well... I guess we're both gonna find out!" The villain smiles back, showing his happiness towards his foe. They both dash at each other, breaking the ground upon initiating their run. Their weapons (a scythe for the villain and a one handed zweihander for the protag) clash, releasing massive amounts of energy, breaking the ground even more, and tearing down a few buildings in the abandoned city. From here on, they slash and blast each other, flying, tossing each other around, etc. And the protag is still smiling. At around 1:18, they clash their weapons again, but they do an attack rush (dio vs jotaro, but with a sword and scythe instead), while making huge shockwave with each hit. Then, when the song gets "softer" (right after this timestamp), the villain splits his scythe's blade in 3, and manages to get massive damage in. The protag gets knocked back and the villain quickly flies towards him to damage him even more, but even while flying backwards from the impact and bleeding, he still smiles. He manages to touch the ground to stabilize himself, and just before the villain gets a hit in, he dodges his blade and blasts him in the face with a fiery explosion, sending the villain back. When the main theme kicks in (with that melody), the protagonist reflects on what he is doing now. He reflects on how he's been stupid to hold back his feelings around his friends. Before, he himself wasn't sure of who he was either. He then says "I'm sure of it now... This... This who I really am!" The drums kick back in, and he emmits an even grander burst of fire. Surprising everyone watching. There was fire on his face, kinda like Endeavor's fire mask, which is hinting at something in the future, as well as a very familiar shape in the fire. The villain stopped, and looked at the form for a moment. Before he could realize what (or who) it was, he sees the protagonist again. He was still holding that smile, but now with tears on his eyes. The protag looks back at his foe, and they both resume their colossal strikes on each other. Now, their arena was filled with flames and explosions everywhere. The villain managed to get a slash in, but the prtag didn't seen phazed by it. They both clash weapons, but an explosion sends their wapons flying off from their hands. With no time to summon them back, they punch each other, and they're sent flying to opposite directions. The villain goes "This kid... I've never seen this coming from someone other than another god! This... makes me want to throw everything I've got! This is what I live for!" They both jump at each other, now preparing for their final attacks. This is when 3:14 kicks in. The villain charges up a massive punch by concentrating all of is power on his arm, ahich is spewing purple energy. The protag charges up a devastating blast by also concentrating power, but on a huge fireball on his hand. Just before their attacks collide, the protag says "Hey... Are you really... A bad guy...?" They both release their attacks, with the villain's punch splitting the protag's huge beam of fire in half with the punch, which makes a blast that devastated the rest of the city. The protag's attack made two immense gashes on the land, and the point where the villain attacked was nothing but a crater now, filled with tumbled buildings and wreckage. I won't tell what happens after, because the song ends at that final attack.
Oh, and I forgot to mention that I'll make it so certain instruments are related to a certain character. The protag's instrument is mainly drums, plus a guitar when he uses his fire. During this, his drums get a lot more "life" into them, as they were more "quiet" before. This, of course, reflects his growth.
Honestly, I think this whole "X goes with everything" goes through a new phase each year based on what's popular at the time. Hell, I remember when "Rules of Nature Goes With Everything" was popular.
3:50 I don't know why, but everytime I hear this part, it makes me wanna cry. It's like... it gives me an emotion that says "we did it" or "this is it" or "everything will be alright now," like you have reached the point to overcome whatever challenge you are facing.
Very interesting video once again and study what this song does to build up its storytelling moment and all the instruments and tools it uses for it What I always thought about how music tend to fit so well with other things and I try to use in the animations I do, is that what makes animation/storytelling so engrossing is timing and "sound" you feel it makes. When watching anything, the story has beats to hit in order to build up excitement and to give us enough context to know what is going on and the right time to give the best pay off. Music is the greatest instrument for storytelling beats. And what makes animation feel nice is how you break up the tempo without making it confusing and letting the audience time for it to resonate, much like when you play music and giving us the right time to feel the emotion. Watch any giving animation without sound and because of how the motion is timed, you should still feel like it's making the sound, and it's even recommended to do a "sound-board" to get the timing you want when you're animating something to give the most interesting feeling to it. Music beats are so beautiful and tells a whole story on its own, and animators tend to time their stories/animations to this flow for the better pay off And I feel like there's a certain formula to all of this, the time the audience need to soak in story beat, the timing an animation needs to make it resonate well, and the same goes with music, because in the end it's all storytelling, and humans somehow all respond similarly to some timings, and that's why some songs always work well with things not associated with it. That's why Zack Hemsey's Mind Heist work with mos trailers because the timing and build up fits under this storytelling beat. Also I randomnly played You say run with the Assassins Creed 3 cinematic and when it hits the 2 minute mark, it's amazing xDDD But all this to say that it's so awe-inspiring how intricate good storytelling is when you need to assemble music to match the emotion, the story and shots needed to best show what you want and having every shot feel good, animation wise. Timing and "sound" is the most important tool for storytelling. Sorry for this long comment and partly repeating what you've said in your video, but it's just something that's been on my mind that nobody really has talked about it other than yourself, and supervisors of mine. But it's something I find that it's so important to know and understand when you want to create something amazing. Great video again :)
Certain moments in animation, t.v., or movies need good music to make it feel impacting. Like that scene in clannad after story were ushio dies was said before of the story as well as its music. Music in itself has its own feelings, so it needs to fit the mood just right. Honestly only a few of them ever get it perfectly right.
I kid you not, just last week I looked up "His World" from Sonic 06 instrument version and thought the same thing!!!!! I even left a comment in the comment section of the video to see if anyone else notice that as well, I seriously thought I was the only one.
I wouldn't say inspired by in the slightest, but they do share some similarities in parts. Also, "His World" will forever be the best thing to ever come out of Sonic 06.
twitter.com/RBKapoor1/status/899422107527823360 This is as full as Twitter will allow me unfortunately. If you're able to edit it the same way you should be able to get similar results tho.
Something not covered is the fact that ANY of the phases of 'you say run' can be shortened or extended signifigantly without notable disruption to the overall flow of the music. This is something also true of things like 'rules of nature', 'don't lose your way' or even 'Guile's theme'. All of them have phases that can have the length modified to better fit the scene buildup without disrupting the overall flow. That is what makes a song 'go with everything', is the ability to cut it to work with pretty much any sequence, without really altering the flow of the music.
Reposted from Austin Senske If Aizawa looks in the mirror, making complete eye contact with himself, and then activated his quirk, would it be active or deactivated?
It'd be active, then deactivate his own quirk, stopping it from deactivating itself, causing it to reactivate. Basically he can create a miniature rave party between the eye flashes and the hair going up and down.

Just recently i watched a video talking about a song in Fire Emblem Awakening that does something similar: "Don't speak her name!"
It not only includes a melancholic rendition of the Main Fire Emblem them but also it's own melody that reappears in the tracks that are played right after the first introduction of this song in slightly different contexts.
There it is certainly not about going with everything but... that main melody if the song is haunting hearing it reappear in so many different tracks.

The one where its Goku kaioken x20 vs frieza was the best one I saw imo. The timing couldn't have been better
Thank you :)
I made it so it means a lot that you said that.
Imaginsane Films Holy crap its you great job on the video!!!
Also, shout-out to the Azura's Wrath's final boss version.
The timing is just plain perfect, it generates so much hype and It has probably the most satisfying punch in the face in everything.
The best one I've seen is from hajime no ippo: the takamura fight. The timing is perfect on that one.

(this scene is kinda similar to deku vs todoroki lol)
He then emerges from the flames with a smile on his face and fierce looking eyes.
This... This who I really am!"
The drums kick back in, and he emmits an even grander burst of fire.
This is what I live for!"
They both jump at each other, now preparing for their final attacks.
A bad guy...?"
They both release their attacks, with the villain's punch splitting the protag's huge beam of fire in half with the punch, which makes a blast that devastated the rest of the city.
Alright that’s sick actually
Honestly, I think this whole "X goes with everything" goes through a new phase each year based on what's popular at the time. Hell, I remember when "Rules of Nature Goes With Everything" was popular.
When the musicians used plus ultra
This was too much "you say run" for 11 minutes.
I'm crying now.
The dub isn’t actually bad now that I hear it
its actually really good
right up there with the dub of FMA/B
Im surprised aswell, most dubs are shit compared to the original
Fresh Spearmint this is why you should give something a chance first
except dragon ball, dbz english dub> old lady voicing goku dub
3:50 I don't know why, but everytime I hear this part, it makes me wanna cry. It's like... it gives me an emotion that says "we did it" or "this is it" or "everything will be alright now," like you have reached the point to overcome whatever challenge you are facing.

Very interesting video once again and study what this song does to build up its storytelling moment and all the instruments and tools it uses for it
What I always thought about how music tend to fit so well with other things and I try to use in the animations I do, is that what makes animation/storytelling so engrossing is timing and "sound" you feel it makes. Music beats are so beautiful and tells a whole story on its own, and animators tend to time their stories/animations to this flow for the better pay off
And I feel like there's a certain formula to all of this, the time the audience need to soak in story beat, the timing an animation needs to make it resonate well, and the same goes with music, because in the end it's all storytelling, and humans somehow all respond similarly to some timings, and that's why some songs always work well with things not associated with it.
That's why Zack Hemsey's Mind Heist work with mos trailers because the timing and build up fits under this storytelling beat.
Also I randomnly played You say run with the Assassins Creed 3 cinematic and when it hits the 2 minute mark, it's amazing xDDD
But all this to say that it's so awe-inspiring how intricate good storytelling is when you need to assemble music to match the emotion, the story and shots needed to best show what you want and having every shot feel good, animation wise.
Oshou Quality Comment
Another song I remember hearing a lot in trailers, especially late 90's and early 2000's, is In the Hall of the Mountain King.
Oshou
Damn that's deep
Certain moments in animation, t.v., or movies need good music to make it feel impacting. Like that scene in clannad after story were ushio dies was said before of the story as well as its music. Music in itself has its own feelings, so it needs to fit the mood just right. Honestly only a few of them ever get it perfectly right.
Dragonk116 You could have used a less spoilery example...
I cried like 20 times because somehow this mf song makes me cry EVERY SINGLE TIME! Thanks
some of the edit versions are phenomenal for me, like the energy and emotion is really brought fforward
You say run reminds me of the song "his world"
Dante Garner his world was a awesome song!!!

I kid you not, just last week I looked up "His World" from Sonic 06 instrument version and thought the same thing!!!!! I even left a comment in the comment section of the video to see if anyone else notice that as well, I seriously thought I was the only one.
D Pierre i feel like the theme was inspired by "his world"
I wouldn't say inspired by in the slightest, but they do share some similarities in parts.
Also, "His World" will forever be the best thing to ever come out of Sonic 06.

Can we get a full version of The Incredibles fight with You Say Run please?
twitter.com/RBKapoor1/status/899422107527823360 This is as full as Twitter will allow me unfortunately. If you're able to edit it the same way you should be able to get similar results tho.
As soon as you hear you say run starting up you know it’s gonna be a powerful scene.
You say run lightens my chest and rumbles my heart.
Also you really sound like the principal. xD
Oh my gosh, this analysis is absolutely amazing. I completely lost it at The Incredibles part. Wow.
This was an incredible video. I have a whole new appreciation for You Say Run
I really loved your breakdown. It was well-written and your voice is easy to listen to. You definitely have yourself a new subscriber.

If Aizawa looks in the mirror, making complete eye contact with himself, and then activated his quirk, would it be active or deactivated?
Your asking the real hard hitting questions
It'd be active, then deactivate his own quirk, stopping it from deactivating itself, causing it to reactivate.
Basically he can create a miniature rave party between the eye flashes and the hair going up and down.

I honestly think of You Say Run as the theme of heroism. It just screams heroic and sounds so triumphant. And it overall sounds so good.
