I thought you never go in that "Creepy Tunnel"
Azeez rarely do... It's creepy...
nice to know that you read comments
u should clean it
Just paused the video to write this comment, Excellent Review as always! I'm a big fan of your camera reviews.
My Instant Search glad you enjoyed it :-)
JuanBagnell 🔥🤗
The whole point of cloud backup is so you can take the full resolution pictures off of the Google photos website... This is all I use now, haven't plugged in my pixel 2 to my laptop once
Jacob Chouinard Indeed, that is true. Although sometimes, one just wants to get the photos off the phone without needing to wait for it to upload, then download
D13H4RD2L1V3 times 10GB of samples...
JuanBagnell I feel ya. My 5Mbps connecting would cry
Watched this on my 2XL/128 that arrived yesterday, and I can't wait to start taking pictures this weekend. Another great review 👍
Have fun shooting :-D
2:26 makes my eyes hurt
Yeti Bluesky reds are tough on digital sensors...
Honestly, on my Pixel, I hardly ever tap the screen to focus. The autofocus is great and it seems to get the exposure right more often if you just let it do its thing rather than choosing. It can definitely be useful in some situations to tap to focus, but not doing it doesn't mean you don't know what you're doing (like you're suggesting) lol.
SamJPC I didn't "suggest" anything other than there are different solutions for different preferences.
Funnily enough, I installed a version of the same Camera of this phone on mi Galaxy S8 and the photos are pretty much the same! Crazy how much Software can help to improve photos, specially talking about the Front camera (BETTER PORTRAIT MODE BY A LANDSLIDE and WAY better selfie camera in general withouth the smoothering filters Samsung has integrated)
You left out a bit about how the pixel 2 shoots it's HDR+ images or how it is doing that noise reduction in dark shots. It's taking multiple images and blending them in a smarter way than all other cameras out there, you can even enable motion to see a little movie of all the shots that were blended. This image stacking is what is doing a lot of the noise control as well, instead of the splotchy, muddy, soft, and still noisy yet somehow oversharpened pictures you'll get from the V30 or any Samsung, you get a surprisingly detailed shot for the conditions. I wonder if many third party apps will work on this camera because of the way it was designed.
Charles Talhelm Not yet. When the Visual Core is enabled in 8.1, then third party apps can take advantage
This Pixel 2 RC Review just made me a lot more excited for the V30. I mean look at those shots at 3:54 , the V30 produces a pleasant and realistic image, while the Pixel 2 has pumped the contrast way too high and has a slightly unpleasant bokeh in comparison. And at 5:18 again the V30's result looks more accurate and clear, white balance on point, and as you stated, the Pixel 2 did feel a bit soft, although that might just be a testament to the lens quality on the former.
I'm not looking to upgrade yet, but if i had to choose a phone to replace my trusty G4, it would be the V30, it's just so good. Great work again, Juan, you just do not disappoint.
That's because in those photos HDR is off... with HDR on, the results are way better. That's why everyone recommends to keep HDR always on on Pixel 2 (or 2 XL).
V30 with Pixel camera app? Maybe the best of both worlds? ;-)
Am i able to win the pixel 2 for watching it within a minute??
ARJD - LOL! Nope! You probably get an Essential - complete with a "future camera update", as well as vouchers for one of the upcoming ("Where are they?") mods that are supposed to be available...
No kalinga
Enouffsaid Arjd haha mine is coming in on monday... 😂
Please make a video on how to take those beautiful light streak photos......... I really can't get it properly right with my OP3
ace 1121 iso 100 shutter speed 20 seconds auto focus [ ∞ ]
And a tripod or similar
AWESOME666ist Awesome.... Thanks man
ace 1121 I also have the OP3. I've never tried for those photos.
ace 1121 you need a tripod and increase the shutter speed
Great camera review like always Juan! It's good to know that the RUclips community can trust that you'll deliver a fantastic review!
TheNickle ☺️
Great review, Juan. @7:42 we actually got to walk through the "spooky tunnel". Nice.
Does anyone know why there are no more real camera reviews???
BTW the portrait mode /blur is a hardware feature. While software plays a big part. hardware plays just as much, they used dual pixels on the physical sensor. So the google pixel actually takes two pictures then uses software to map it out making the portrait mode. Its not purely software
I haven't had an opportunity to play with the camera too much, but damn, is it improved.
The most technical and most accurate video ive seen so far. As always...you are the JUAN!
Sancho Lawan ☺️
Sweet. Love my Note 8 but I"m getting the smaller pixel 2 for when I don't feel like carrying around a big phone. Best of both worlds really and the Pixel 2 is only costing me $250 bucks with trade-in of old Pixel XL
I think you need to merge Real Camera and Real Audio review. Not only for the sake of views, but also because both of them are integrated, especially in videos aspect. You dont need to do a super long sentences for the audio section, audiophiles just need to hear it's capability to play lossless files and what's the character; warm/bright, bass heavy, etc.
「 f a d l i 」 We thought about that, but that video would be CRAZY long...
Am I the only one who comes to Juan's videos just for this one song he always plays while reviewing phones? No? Just me?
Despite how old this model is now, especially when later models having multiple back cameras. I just got a Pixel 2 because of its compatibility with Filmic Pro as far the Camera2 API phones go.
I was literally searching daily for the past week to see your review and finally!!!
mathnofun ☺️
will you make a review update after android 8.1 update? when they will activate special chip that serves faster hdr process
We'll likely follow up the Pixel after update, but not right away.
Pixel visual core is the name
I'm using the pixel 2xl right now. The display is unnoticaceable to me except for the MINOR color shift you get if you look at it from a very odd angle
Arif what else do you notice? trying to upgrade to a p2XL from ip6s+
or should I go with Nokia 8 or Pixel 2 5inch?
get the iPhone 8 plus - it's great and the camera is on par with the pixel.
avatariors12345 yeah go for apple 8+ price too is around that of Pixel and you won't regret it.
Arif Can you update your comment if there's any screen burn-in issue ? Thanks 😄
I upgraded from the iphone6s and its a huge leap in performance. I love the display and think its perfectly fine. I have had no burn in issues. The OS is a godsend and stock android is super smooth. I held my display next to a note 8 and it was pretty much the same except for colors being a bit more vibrant on the note 8, but the colors are only vibrant on the note 8 because google is still waiting on sending an update to the pixel 2 phones to adjust this. I personally dont care about it because i cant tell that they are "duller". Overall, I love the 2xl and dont understand why these reviewers are making such a big deal over things that are getting patched. Im keeping this phone and will continue to enjoy it.
amazing and real review....!!!!! other youtubers have just exaggerated the camera review..!!
0:35 when you are not in the giveway winners🤣
Solid unbiased video. Glad to see some honest coverage and comparison of the HDR both ON/OFF.
gonna get PIXEL 2 SOON,Working Hard Right Now :")
Pixel 2 now here in Philippines is 120 dollars
There is an update coming out (Oreo 8.1) that will supposedly make the camera on the pixel 2 and pixel 2 xl even better.
"8.1 is eventually supposed to activate the hidden Pixel Visual Core system-on-a-chip. The image processor is built into both new Pixel phones, yet remains dormant. Google says it'll activate it in the coming months to make image processing smoother."
so i would also like to see what it will look like after the update comes out.
I currently have an Iphone and im thinking about trying out android again.
Go for it, you won't be disappointed!
Thank you so much for pointing out the mono audio recording. The more people speak up, the better. Who wants their lifetime memories in mono?
mosincredible I do not.
For those interested, 5:45 are seed pods, not leaves.
Once the visual core engine is unlocked with 8.1 ... You can effectively use third party apps to create HDR+ images.. which sounds promising.. so manual controls aren't absent dat way.
I went to bestbuy today to look at the Google Pixel 2 bezels that many bloggers complaint about and I really love those bezels they aren’t that big and actually gives you something to hold into not like the Samsung galaxy s8. I think you guys need to clarify things and make it clear that those bezels actually fit nice on the small Google Pixel 2 cause that’s actually hurting their sales I almost buy an iPhone if it wasn’t because I decided to take a peak at the real thing.
+JuanBagnell 1 dumb question; if you stick a 3.5mm Rode mic into the dongle does that mean you'll get a stereo audio recording while shooting a video?
yes, this is right
But does it have a headphone jack?
Actually, Pixel’s auto HDR+ applies the effect to all photos. It just applies a more subtle version to avoid the shutter and processing delay.
Regardless, this is a great camera. Top-notch hardware paired with super-intelligent software. Only wished they’d give us control OOTB without needing a separate app but I can’t complain much about the output. Excellent camera.
Just a shame it’s marred by the display controversy on the 2 XL.
D13H4RD2L1V3 the issue I've seen, which I probably should have shown more of, the effect in hdr+ is more subtle but also slightly more variable.
JuanBagnell Noted. I used HDR+ for 6 months and it does vary. 9 times out of 10 though, it gets it mostly very right. Impressive automatic processing
Ok so yes, it IS crazy good; but I'm wondering something about the video recording. Look at 07:10 when walking and showing the stabilization; what in the world is going on with the trees? What I mean is, look at the way the branches sway in the wind, almost like stop-motion O.o
Do you think portrait mode and manual mode are incompatible? I'm basically asking if LG can incorporate portrait mode into their awesome camera software...
Only one word to describe your videos Juan, QUALITY
RagingTiger Glad you enjoyed it :-)
How will the camera perform once third party apps are able to take advantage of googles hdr + in the upcoming Oreo update? I think being able to use that hdr with a raw camera app like muse cam will make the pixel an even better camera than it already is!
Maybe Google does mono audio recording since Apple is doing it as well.
Zach Inverse there is a lot of apple "inspiration" here.
hey Juan, will you do an XZ1 or XZ1 compact in-depth camera review? please
deadworms unfortunately I don't think we'll get to one any time soon. Have the Mate next on my list.
JuanBagnell noooooo
Any recommendations on 3rd party manual camera apps? Does picture quality take a big hit?
Obviously I'd like a camera app with a quick, efficient interface so all major settings are available from the viewfinder.
Each app will have its own post processing, so "quality" will be very subjective. Hoping soon that oreo 8.1 will launch and then developers should be able to better use Google's camera API and hardware.
JuanBagnell Yeah, but because the app isn't designed for a specific device and it doesn't have the same direct control over the hardware as maybe the stock app has the results (at least for auto mode) are usually worse.
What's this about the Camera API? Is there a new version being released with finer control?
Hey, Juan, for those of us that want to stick with the Pixel like, but would like some manual controls sometimes, any suggested camera apps??
Also, great work, as Always
Open Camera is generally preferred by many for its features but its UI design might not be the most pleasing.
I used Footej as it keeps a style similar to Google’s app but has manual ISO, shutter speed and focus.
Victor Hernandez yup. I like open camera if you want RAW and manual controls. I also like cinema 4k for video.
Mate 10 got 97 dxo mark score . Will u review that?
jerryl davis Most likely. Mate 9 was one of his favorites last year
D13H4RD2L1V3 next up on my list actually...
JuanBagnell please make a real audio review of the mate 10
I am buying my phone right after your review of the mate 10. Hopefully, we can get it by next week.
Big fan of your real camera review. Waiting for the nokia 8 real camera review
I think they want you to use Google Photos autostiching for panoramas. They're usually superb, but there are times when it doesn't detect a panorama scene
Péter Friedrich I really should play with that more.
JuanBagnell I didn't figure it out yet.
Sometimes it makes an animation out of the photos, sometimes it makes a panorama out of photos, which have nearly nothing overlapping.
Unfortunately there isn't a manual way to make panoramas.
Not to mention the lack of slow mo when copying videos from the DCIM folder
Which one is better in sunset and sunrise ?? Note 8 or pixel 2 xl??
LOVE your reviews!
:-)
Very comprehensive review. Thanks!!
Sudip Chatterjee you're very welcome.
When we will see another Real Camera review Juan? :(
He left pocketnow
Great detailed review!
If I had to choose only 3 tech reviewers to watch...only 3 to subscribe to....it would no doubt be marques brownlee...Zack.(Jerry rig everything) and Mr bagnell...not necessarily in that order...Juan is amazing at breaking down the the specs and nails every review...keep up the great work...I always look forward to hearing your reviews Mr bagnell.
Mark Gorzka Thats some amazing high praise :-)
Can one use the google camera app and other paid camera third party apps on other android phones with similar results.
Using the moment's lens attachment will fix all those zoom photos.
Google uses HDR and good processing to give it close to if not the best single camera "auto mode"
Of course once you go manual others take the lead.
Even though it's actual lens is far from the best in specs.
LG, Samsung, Apple, and others would do well to copy and improve on googles default HDR lite auto mode, especially with low light pictures.
Why would you record in stereo on a phone, what's the point?
It makes perfect sense for it to be mono.
I really didn't learn anything new from this video. Was expecting a dive into features.
Will there be another follow up review for when 8.1 drops, enabling the ICP?
Is it possible to implement portrait mode feature in older smartphones with PDAF camera?
visiting the local dispensary I see ;) 5:14
sicdedworm09 just passing by...
😉
Which one should i buy for the portrait blur effect the iPhone 8plus or the google 2 pixel xl?
So is a mate 10 real camera review coming ? I notice the mate 10 has more sharpening and green looks desaturated
How about a video for the display problems ?
Yup i think that issue deserve a video pretty much everyone who have used the phone seems to be disappointed with the display.
Juan only has the smaller Pixel 2 as of now. Jaime should have the 2 XL
Pocketnow wont make a negative pixel video or else they wont be invited to events and get free review samples
I agree i don't think they will completely avoid an issue like that. we can expect a display issue video from jaime soon.
VintageRKO Um, Juan actually BOUGHT this particular Pixel.
I don’t get where people come up with this
35: what's up with that facial expression? Lol
i knowww 🤣
Sucks that they stopped shipping the Pixel 2 XL for the moment. I really want to give it a whirl.
Mr. Carzo how do you know they stopped shipping? I was wondering why I haven't gotten mine yet.
0:34 - My face when I see how much it will cost here in Brazil.
Nícolas Kim 😆🤔😕
It's very bad that you disabled HDR+ at the beginning. Nobody who shoots in Auto would disable it. Moreover HDR+ is something totally different than HDR. Generally HDR+ improves the image quality, delivers much(!) more natural colors, improves the noise extremely and has no disadvantages like ghosting. And yes, HDR+ can sometimes look too contrasty, but that's still better than HDR+ off as the image quality is much better. With HDR+ off you lose a lot of information because HDR+ is like having 10 rear cameras in a phone. HDR+ should be always on because it is far superior to "HDR" from other phones.
Moreover HDR+ auto is predictable as it isn't an HDR+ On/Off switch. In fact HDR+ Auto is a mild HDR+ that is always on as far as I know.
Quoutub no it's not bad. It's to maintain consistency against other cameras we've reviewed.
+pocketnow haven't even watched it yet but I expect the shady night shot by the tunnel with the street light, as with every camera review. PS how about using a side by side comparison of all those shots over the years.
I notice that the HTC U11 is clompletely ignored when flagship smartphones are reviewed and compared. Especially when the cameras are reviewed. No mentioning of the U11 camera despite being on equal footing with the competition like the usual suspects iPhone8, Samsung S8 and LG V30. I wonder if the enormous marketing budgets of those companies have something to do with it , . . . . hmmm . . . I wonder ?!
Btw is the Pixel 2 not manufactured by HTC, or at least partially ??
Weird huh?
There's the U11 Plus soon
The best smarthphone camera (overall), and the Visual Core is not even turned on yet. I wonder how much of a difference it will make when that thing is enabled.
Which is better the note 8 or the pixel xl 2?
Can you switch the front and the back camera when you are making a video?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Pixel 2/2 XL has a smaller sensor then the first Pixel/Pixel XL right?
Audi Ahmad i dont think so?
you should go back and do these reviews on older phones, kinda like after the buzz but just reviewiing older phone like old iphones and old but gold phones like the htc one m7
salvi I think I started doing camera reviews on the M7.
on your channel? that phone came out before you joined pocketnow right
I am between Google pixel 2 and asus zenfone 5,i know that pixel 2 have better cpu,but i need a phone purely for photos and videos at day and night because i travel a lot and i need the best between those 2,any suggestions???
"Unibrow sensor bar" - LMAO! :-)
Mambutu O'Malley it's totally a unibrow 😂
I'm getting increasingly worried by the continuous lack of after-ending snippets of videos, is this the real Juan Megapickles or an impostor?
Kurgo ha! I haven't worked in a good megapickle for a while...
Which one would u pick. Pixel2 or v30?
v30
v30, still waiting for them to sell it tho...
Still not even available in country yet. Guess I'm gonna see it after iPhone x
vs karni pixel
I just realized that Juan is no longer working on this channel so I have canceled my subscription, sorry guys but he was the only one reason I was subscribed, wish you the best 👋🏼
Taking night shots the manual/ pro mode is *needed*
Finally a real and unbiased review not like the MKBHD where he sais this camera is far ahead of the other flagships.
Simion Florin it was mkbhd opinion
Houston Wilson and he doesn't focus greatly on the camera anyway. He's a great overview channel, jack of all trades but master at none I guess you could say.
I don’t think he said it was far ahead. He said it was a very smart camera, which I agree since the auto mode is extremely intelligent
Because he turns the years ahead HDR+ off most of the time in this review. Now this is UNBIASED?!
Shinya Kougami Because it’s to keep consistency. Most of the phones in the review had HDR turned off most of the time even if they were designed to shoot with it enabled.
To make up for it, he put the HDR section much earlier on.
What about the extra processor that will allow third apps use HDR +?
I don't think Google is completely ignoring the manual camera fokes. They are opening up their Visual Core Chip to 3 party devs. So they might not be building a pro camera app today but they enabling devs to take advantage of their tech more.
Omar McFarlane if it's not built into the phone, it likely won't work as well.
Wanna see which is better. HDR+ by Google vs HDR Boost by HTC U11
Juan was the best at these things he's by himself now but he should have stayed a little longer
Looks like it is not quite there for night shooting, despite being the best. Will stick with my cameras for now.
can we do anything to have manual control in camera for the phone?
...With everything else that most find issues with, the camera and all its functionality, and the front-facing speakers are probably the only "Saving Graces" and selling points for both iterations of this handset, in my opinion...
Crazcompart I think many would agree.
JuanBagnell - Juan, I must give the Google founders credit where credit is due, being that all those years ago, they started with pretty much an image search engine (I had ALWAYS used Google for that back in the day) which resided in a teeny-tiny (and mostly second-hand) server array - especially under the shadow of then-giant Yahoo..."Oh, how the mighty have fallen - HARD! "
Crazcompart too true. We've come a LONG way.
Yup...Long before Android and iOS touch technologies - Where computer-literacy was order of the day..."Veterans" in our own right!
The main selling point of this phone is that it has the fastest Android experience out there (stock Android + Google optimizations) + updates (fast and 3 years of them). The camera is a big plus to all of this, yes.
Compared to the V30 which camera can ultimately create a better photo (inc manual)
Squirtle yourmom depends on the photographer more than anything else.
I have the V30 and love the back cameras but the front camera is trash.
I'd love to watch this video but for some reason it's blank. I can hear the audio, no video... Not sure it's a problem with my computer either as I just watched another video okay... weird!
Would like to ask if the pixel xl will have a seperate real cam review?
Ellis Tiu nope
I can't believe you did most of the video using HDR+ off. I mean, come on! HDR+ isn't just an HDR mode, it's actually basically Google's post-processing, which you cannot turn off on other phones. Very disappointing.
Also, 'auto' HDR+ on Pixel phones actually is on all the time, and it's not even called 'auto' anymore.
I was gonna get it but then I realized that the HTC u11 has the exact same specs plus 6 gigs of ram and better build quality and much cheaper. Got it today and it's pretty good
Suheil Al-Tayea get the pixel dongle and you've matched the headphone quality... Oh, the u11 comes with good buds tho...
JuanBagnell thanks man yeah will try that out too. Like the earphones that came with the device. Oh and the micro SD sillier is a bonus too! Don't know why none kf the tech channels are mentioning this device more
“Where the pixel XLs” I C what u did there ;D
It's actually a 1/2.55" sensor, not 1/2.6"
wait, am i able to do the light trail effect on the V30???
What's your list for top camera in 2017?
