- The Virginia class is a class of nuclear-powered cruise missile fast-attack submarines, currently in the military service in the United States Navy. Designed by the General Dynamics's Electric Boat and the Huntington Ingalls Industries, the Virginia-class submarines are the American Navy's latest undersea warfare platform which incorporates the latest in stealth, intelligence gathering and weapons systems technology.

You can totally understand why Australia opted to buy these instead of the French subs once we made them available.
Is there any contract to "buy" this type of vessels ?
@@totorvdr5994 No contract yet, Australia has 5 different options. Buy an existing UK (Astute) or US (Virginia) sub, buy the yet to be built SSN(X) or SSN(R) class, and lastly to build a completely new sub derived from US and UK components. Buying Virginia class seems the most likely since it can be done sooner than the SSN(X) or SSN(R) and has a more efficient nuclear reactor to the Astute. However, nothing is locked into place. I believe that have 18 months to come up with a definitive procurement plan.
Because France was about to provide first sub in 2032 but USA will provide earlier so USA back stabbed its great ally France by making Australia cancel the deal

I miss the good old days. Being in my rack reading the latest Tom Clancy novel. Learning all about submarine warfare. I was on the USS SPIEGEL GROVE LSD-32. In the Gator 🐊 Navy at that time.
They should develop SAM's that can be launched from the Virginia class. With it data linked into an asset like an F-35 they could ambush enemy assets long before they could ever see the F-35.
Sounds like what they are doing with the latest SM-6 modification, which can also be used for long range surface attack. The ERAM is an amazing weapon.

We should allocate twice the current budget in order to build and develop new submarines. Keep those engineers and builders busy. Each dollar spent on the USN submarine fleet has a very high return on investment. It takes a very hardcore kind of man to serve aboard a submarine. Everyone likes to to talk about SEAL teams and fighter pilots, but for me it's the USN submariners that have my highest respect and admiration. They are men among men! It requires high intelligence, maximum professionalism, extreme sense of duty, putting their civilian lives on hold, and in general having huge balls and ice in their veins!!
what return on investment?
@@truepatriot5425 Dollar for dollar, man for man, these subs are the best bang for buck. Powerful modern navies rely heavily on submarines. These subs threaten ballistic missile subs as well as other attack subs, AND they can protect carrier strike groups. Not only that. They gather some of the most sensitive intelligence information and are nearly constantly in a war-like state of readiness. In other words, they do their job whether they ever engage in combat or not.
We’re already doing that with Columbia class and SSN(X). There’s also the constant research into outfitting current boats with new tech. I was a submariner, the submarine fleet is amazing but the politics in our greater military really is something else and makes me worry about our readiness in a formal war.
@@truepatriot5425 The peace they keep, the sea lanes they keep open is the investment that they guarantee to the average world citizen.
Please don’t keep me busy. Building these things is an absolute pain

That ship torpedoed at 3:35 appears to be ex HMAS Torrens, which was actually destroyed by Australia’s first Collins Class submarine HMAS COLLINS back in ‘96 or thereabouts
Australia should lease some of these retired subs. As a temporary measure until the Australian built subs arrive.

I absolutely love watching the relentless progress of weapons technology. If we coulf put as much thought, effort and money into peace as we do to war, I wonder what the world would look like?
But I am no fool, and I understand the requirement to be as well armed as possible.

Some of the boats in this video have a curvature on the forward surface of the sail where it meets the hull and others have none, just a right angle of the sail into the hull. Different classes of boat, or completely different submarines.
The boats without the curve are the Los Angeles class.

still, diesel subs were still able to penetrate a carrier strike group during exercises
You do know Diesel have much better noise reduction not having nuclear reactors to keep cool? Diesel are also much more likely to have already been detected at range, and have very limited range. So unless your the defending Nation with them, they are not very useful. What if your diesel refueling boat is sunk? How will you get in position 1000 miles away?
@@rogersmith1408 by your first sentence's logic, diesel sub is harder to be detecedt, plus small form factor. the US navy has bases around the world, deployment of diesel subs in Europe for example instead of virginia would levy a hhuge burden to the nuclear fleet
@@trungnguyenhoang6821 We have bases around the world, not Navel ship yard. Diesal has to surface every day its out to sea. Its only effective as a defensive weapon. True, but not Blue Water. They have no range or speed. How do you get them to a contested area? But yes, some super stealthy sub's exist outside the USA.
