FIRST LOOK | New Range Rover: luxury 4x4 goes electric, gets seven seats, from £94k! | Top Gear

- This is the new Range Rover. No, really. It messes with your head, doesn’t it? Is this really the new one? From the side profile at least, it just looks like the Range Rover we're familiar with… yet unaccountably better. Smoother, neater, more polished, tightened up.
But the new Range Rover builds on a totally new, mostly aluminium body structure. Launch versions include plug-in hybrids that'll go 60 miles on their 140bhp electric motor before waking their 3.0-litre petrol engine. But if you want to do 0-62 in 4.6 seconds you'll be needing the 530bhp V8 4.4-litre twin-turbo unit from BMW. And it can be had in two wheelbases, and for the first time it adds the option of seven seats in the longer shell. They’ll even be an EV version. But there’s a lot to go through, so allow Top Gear Magazine’s Jack Rix to be your guide.

I think it’s gorgeous, now I just need to win the lottery.
Good luck with that
@Jolape yeah
Its not so expensive....

You'll need a lottery win for the repair costs.

Kudos to them on the diffused taillights. That should be legally mandated. It's bad enough constantly being blinded by headlights going the other way, but half the time I'm blinded by the LED tailights of cars in front of me too.
What he didn't tell us, and others have, Land Rover filed 125 new patents for the tech in this car - Including the head and tail lights.
I had patented a super simple and cheap solution to that problem, tried to present it to car manufacturer but nobody was interested, that was probably 10 years ago, maybe i should try again...
You probably have a stigmatism or something then, I've never had that issue from taillights
@@shanet7511 I do. Taillights generally never bothered me until they started using LEDs. I don't know enough about how/why/if a stigmatism would trigger that but thats a pretty common condition and manufacturers should be considering it when they design lighting.
Taillights didn't lack for visibility before LEDs came along so there's no need to have such intensity. And even with headlights studies have shown they're actually less effective at distance. The light is just so intense closer up people are fooled into thinking they're better, and manufacturers are all too happy to charge a premium for what is essentially automotive jewelry.
Maybe old fashioned fog lights
As a previous gen Range Rover owner, I love the new design and how it kept true to the design language. Doesn’t make the previous generation so dated looking. Excellent continuity in design.
too bad its electric garbage
As a current gen vogue owner i feel this looks outdate already.
I think it makes the previous generation incredibly dated looking

Despite that, I wouldn't go near it without a lifetime bumper to bumper warranty.
This car…as well as other true luxury vehicles…can only be leased. It is not their fault…it is just the nature of the evolution of technology in cars. Too many of the mechanical functions are now being controlled by software and systems. These systems will fail over time…about 4 years…No way around it…it’s just technology…sometimes it freezes or stops working.
@@RPYMCMB bullshit, Toyota's last a lot longer than 4 years!! It's just that land rover / jaguar are a terrible auto manufacturer

Try selling that in 3 years! Same story every time, all problems solved.😂😂
The drag COEFFICIENT has nothing to do with size. Absolute drag is a product of the drag coefficient and the size, but a train could have just as low a drag COEFFICIENT as a supercar, it would just be creating more drag overall due to its size.
I got so angry when he said that 😅😂
I think he means for a big boxy SUV. Poorly worded.
@@avalsirithanawat1772 same
Gerry McGovern is one of the three best car designers of the last decade, without a doubt. SUV's are inherently ungainly, yet he and his team have come up with truly great looking ones.
The other two designers that I feel are up there with him are (of course) Ian Callum, late of Jaguar, and Ed Welburn, late of General Motors.
TATA got the 2 best car designers, eh?
@@ravenbonanza1522 yupp
@@ravenbonanza1522 To my eye, yes.
The most impressive, I think, is Ed Welburn, given the number of different cars GM makes. Every one looks like it's a GM car, but each brand (Chevy, Buick, Cadillac) each have their own style. Even more impressive, given the awful designs they put out before him (not a knock on Wayne Cherry, the previous head of design at GM. He was forced to put out crap.).
@@ravenbonanza1522 Adding on: Looking at the other cars out there - BMW? Those grills are hideous. Nissan? One look at their SUVs and I'm ill. Hyundai / Kia / Genesis? Knock offs of other cars. Ford / Lincoln? Fords are meh, and Lincolns are just ugly; ironically, the head of design at Ford is Moray Callum, Ian Callum's brother.
Lookin clean
Best looking full size SUV bar none, well done to the design, development and manufacturing teams 👏
I'll see you soon, lottery dependent or in a few years for a pre owned one 😉
There's no supercharged V8, it's a smaller twin turbo unit now.
Noticed his mistake too. A mistake a car guy would never make.
@@bitcoindynamics4038 depends what the "car guy" is into

@@bencarpendale While I agree, being a journalist - especially for TopGear - he has a duty of care to provide accurate information, and it's not like he wouldn't have had that at hand.
Yes it’s definitely worth mentioning the change in the video too.
Not sure how well that new ass is going to age but I am loving it atm.
I esp love the new treatment of the 3/4 windows. They've visually erased the D-pillar. It looks so futuristic and minimalist and IMO closer to the original vision of the RR's design looking like it has a floating roof than ever before. ❤️❤️❤️
IMO the rear is my favourite. More than any other SUV ig.
It was already cracking now absolutely Stunning.
8:38 I sprayed my coffee when I saw the poor Jack's head doesn't even come up to the roofline.
he looks like some kid waiting for his parents to unlock the car.
It looks timeless and very elegant and I like how they carefully chose the paint for this it really does help
Bring it out.
Amazing how it can look like a concept car drawing in real life...
i thought it's still just a render! wow it must've been refreshing to actually see it in person
Superb! I have to drive one as soon as it’s available. Sat in one today at the launch event- seats are even more comfortable even though they’re a bit firmer. Bookings open in two weeks, will probably order the long wheelbase V8 😈
The last statement taking a stab at Clarkson, about "not seeing any of these down at the farm." :-D
But who cares.this guy can never match Clarkson. So thats OK.plus Clarkson loves range rovers anyway
We need a full electric Range Rover on a fully optimised and dedicated Plattform for EVs.
@@Joe_2025 This isn't a dedicated EV platform - it's an ICE platform that can be modified to be an EV. A dedicated EV platform is designed in a completely different way
Tata motors have a seperate company called tata electric. The company is helping other manufacturers build electric cars and busses.
In India every upcoming tata car is designed for electric, they release a ICE car and later they will launch its all electric version.
JLR is also going to do the same, but Jaguars are being pushed ahead first. Land rover will keep making ICE cars as long as they sell(as per reports here)
No we don't - half a ton of batteries on top of a 2.5 tonne vehicle? The plug-in hybrid is the best bet.
Coming in 2024
I don't care for phev or ev.i just want a sv lwb trim with 4 seats and a v8 thats it.
the real futuristic starts from here.. Love it about LR..
Oh my Lord, I don’t know what is out there that can even get close to this beauty! I wouldn’t be surprised if the whole 1st year’s production is already ordered, ( half to Saudi Arabia half to the U.S) Well done Range Rover 👍🇬🇧

The most interesting thing is that this new Range Rover looks like a concept and not a production car!
That's one thing I like about Land rover designs - just look at the Velar - that's some 2028 design right there.

How does it make 23" wheels look normal? Cars these days are far too big
The tire walls have been made thicker.
lately cars have been growing in size but stayed in the same proportions, hence why some cars like the Hyundai IONIQ 5 looks like a Golf-size hatchback if you don't have any size reference. Same with things like the ID.3, Taycan, 992-gen 911, etc. If you look closely at the end when Jack stands in front of the side-view of the Range Rover you can get an idea on how big the car is.
FYI the VW ID.3 can come with 20 inch wheels and I have no idea why.
@@thatcopenguy Hyundai isotonic ISN’T the size of a Golf? Goodness me, I haven’t seen one yet and would never have guessed that’s the case..
@@indiebekonn seen a few 5's. They're way bigger than a Golf. Look massive in the real world
Not in the Middle East. Every other car here is a big SUV. Oh, and btw, Range Rover dominates the luxury market. They are as common as Ford Fiestas in Dubai.
Give me the PHEV. Don't want anything to do with a BMW engine at all. Plus at 62 miles electric range, I may only need to gas up once a month. That my friends, is a WIN - WIN!
Very clean looking. I will consider buying one for my wife when the fully electric one comes out. Maybe there will actually be a reliable range rover lol.
hahahaha. Ironically RangeRovers might survive the electrification more than any other company haha.
our 2015 range rover works fine, but sometimes the doorstep doesn't go in. no idea why.
The designing team after reveal : The Germans never expected this didn’t they ?
Pleasure to listen too. The fella chose good words to describe the Range Rover you would buy one from him.
I'll wait for the SV Dynamic with the 617 Hp and 560 lb's !
Lovely homage to the past and introduction to the future, in that this is probably the last model before , uhm, JLR? Land Rover? Tata? (who make this sexy beast exactly?!) go full electric with the Range Rover. Love the interior, the dashboard and curved displays look superb and delight to operate. Hopefully people make the Copout36 delegates feel good about themselves as they dine in luxury up North and buy the hybrid model... Bless.
Man I really love this new look and package options
Drag coefficient (Cd) does not depend on 'size' or the frontal area to be more technical. At 1:50 it is incorrect to say that the Cd is remarkable for its size. Even a scaled down model of this would have the same Cd because it depends on the shape.
its not even an offroader now. its just a luxury city car that will never see dirt.
Exactly
It'll probably be bought by some higher class mum that only takes her kids to school
thats what its been for decades.
I'm pretty sure those rear indicator lights will not be allowed in North American models because US regulations prohibit indicator lights being on movable parts of the bodywork, such as the tailgate.
Audi q7 all the lights are on the tailgate
Everything looks great except the rear end. The mild hybrid system reliability might be something to worry in the future but it is nice to have a Rangie that can be frugal. Let's hope the fully electric has a longer range than current vehicles.
The new Range Rover is 99.9% stunningly gorgeous… the only design head scratch is the “U” insert on the driver/passenger doors… I’m not sure how it integrates form vs function… but it’s an unavoidable eye pause like a fat booger hanging in someone’s nose… you can’t unsee it…
It's homage to the (real) vents on earlier models. May have been too much of a shock to change the design language too much, so consider them as 'ghosts'! ;)
@@GudieveNing Ghosts it is… 😊

How soothing it is to look at, as if a Beethoven symphony were an automotive design.❤️❤️
Why are Brit luxury vehicles so often gorgeous?
Because we blow the budget on design and don't hire anyone to check if anything works.
Wow it really does look like a concept of the Range Rover... so clean
1:32 the supercharged V8 is dead, the V8 is a turbo charged BMW unit
2:25 is that a small gap? from here that line looks pretty normal

I love the tiny panel gaps. And I love the smoothness and minimalism of the exterior. The interior looks great too. Just like a concept car. It looks so modern and high quality. This is almost perfect. I would perhaps make the headlights look a bit more new or modern.
The tiny panel gaps means the build quality is going to have to sooooooo tight.
@@simonward5833 It is probably because of the increased stiffness that they are able to have smaller gaps. Less body-flexing...

I hope the electrical/ mechanical issues have been fixed especially the noise from the suspension
Thats all well n great. But does it turn on? And does it STAY on?
brilliant design all around, not just the rear which is the best in an SUV atm. Clean design, less creases, no fake vents and exhaust tips or humongous grill, the chunky clean flat slabbed doors etc will make this designn age well for the next decade.. well done to the Land Rover designers!

It's great to know you've made the right choice when you now have one on order and waiting for it to be delivered.
It looks fantastic, but if history repeats itself regarding issues down the line, it looks like a second hand nightmare.
The people buying it don't care. Luxury cars are all terrible to own second hand.
@@Obi-WanKannabis some cars break a bit too soon though, like that other JLR product that I'm not going to mention.
