  • The fallout from the closure of four different Bethesda studios certainly hasn't been clean. Not only do we have reports on what else they were up to, but also more trouble on the horizon for Xbox with upcoming exclusives. When it rains, it pours!

The Gamepass model never made sense to me. I can understand Microsoft wanting to give gamers a reason to play third party games on Xbox instead of Playstation. Gotta be competitive. But across the board it ruins the sale of games because it's too good a value to the customer. Why ever buy games if you have the subcription? So it deprives Playstation of sales and trains Xbox customers to never open their wallet. How is that not a recipe for disaster? Game development is just too damned expensive for them to be giving away the farm.

And what MS is banking on is you not only get a subscription of some kind, but that you also spend money on those games in app purchases and buy other games still which aren’t on the pass. AND they’re hoping to capture more of their pinch-pursed audience who spend money on games every once in a blue moon to subscribe and get a constant cash flow from them, which surely will end up being more profit in the long run per each of those kinds of customers rather than have them just buy their one or two games a year, and probably on sale at that or through a vendor

I'm not going to lie. I feel horrible for Tango Gameworks, I feel vindicated from Xbox going mask off for the lack of better words. So many people praise Phil so much and ignored all his faults because he always said the right thing to gamers. The guy has always been a snake and full of shit. He has lied time and time again, but people defended him because of gamepass. At least people are seeing it now. Also will keep saying it. Gamepass isn't going to work in the long run, at least not without cutting teams more, adding more mtx, and even raising sub prices. But even then, this will result in lower subs, since many people will find it too expensive. I still think more of this shit is going to happen. Just think a little people. They spent $69 BILLION on just one acquisiton, and they made many others. Do you guys really think MS is going to wait until they make their money back after a long period of time? When have we seen these type of huge publicly traded companies do this? They think short term, quarterly. They see numbers down for a little while and they panic. That's how these businesses have been working. I've said Gamepass is going to hurt the gaming industry like sub services hurt the movie/show industry. I called this when people were hyping it up, but we are seeing the bad effects more and more. Gamepass is good for the consumer in short term sure, but it's horrible for the industry as we are seeing, and in the long term, awful for the consumer in turn. I called this and people shat on me, calling me a "Sony Pony" or "Xbox hater", even though I looked at it completely logically. So yeah, I feel vindicated. It felt so obvious, but people were blind to it.
I mean just think about it. Selling full price games to putting them on a sub service. Not every subscriber will play every game, due to lack of time, too big a catalog, or no interest due to smaller less quality games to fit in the subscription service model. This would mean that many games will not translate to enough monetary gain for it's cost of development. Just think about how much of the money made on subs have to be split to other publishers, studios, marketing, the service itself, game development cost and time to develop gamepass games, cloud gaming push, ect. That is already a HUGE amount of money, and then we have the HUGE acquisitions they made on top of all that. I just never saw how all this was going to work out. There is no way this is going to be sustainable in long term, especially when considering subscription numbers in these services usually stagnate. And also the amount of people who sub for a month and then unsub. I felt crazy how many people didn't see this coming, but I'm starting to feel vindicated. It's only going to get worse. I really think they rose to close to the sun with gamepass. It was a success and as a result, they just kept throwing a ton of money at it, I feel, without even thinking about the realistic outcome. I think people saw that they were making a ton of money because they have a lot of subscribers, but they fail to put into perspective how much money they throw and are still throwing back into the service.

In the case of Redfall specifically, we aren't privy to how much money they were having to sink into actually fixing it or implementing an offline mode. Gotta remember xbox is Microsoft too and saying xbox is failing very short sighted. And they have thousands of studios and not making enough games to cover the costs 🤷‍♂️ sad but true need to clean house and sort it out. And laying off call of duty staff about time its been a reskin for years. No decent story no new or different gameplay lol

Stuff like smt5, metaphor and Visions of mana, are going to be for ps5 now. If xbox cant bother to get their shit together, then Im not interested in supporting the platform that keeps failing.

Have you heard the rumored reason they chose Tango and Arkane Austin to close? MS gave Zenimax an ultimatum
The studios weren't in full production for a game yet, and would need to staff up in the coming months, so it was simpler.
That's insane, it's a choice a company that's dying makes, not a 3T dollar company, but an Embracer like company that gets hit from all sides at once and is afraid of going bankrupt.
Xbox and MS can take the hit and be fine, restructure Tango and Arkane Austin, to make AA games instead, i'm pretty sure Tango could make a sequel to Hi-Fi Rush in under 3 years with only 50 people on the team.
Xbox has "fought" so hard in the last few years to get into the japanese market and then they just close the only Japanese studio they have, it wasn't even a token studio, this team created by Shinji Mikami made The Evil Within and Hi-Fi Rush, fanstastic games and new IP for the hungry company to own, since it seems that's what they value the most.
Should'nt that make they do a double take before shutting down the whole studio?? Matt Booty needs to be fired and, Aaron Greenberg as well and Phil needs to be sunset.

This is what happens when a bunch of uncreative people with way too much money try to lead. This might also be Microsoft lighting a fire under everyone’s ass. Which sometimes works but breeds resentment. Having said that I’m in no place to tell a massive corporation how to run their business. It doesn't matter though. They do not deserve your money. The continuous pattern of downgrading games yet charging more is horrendous. Don't let nostalgia fog the reality of the situation - Xbox can't promise anything and yet ask for more

  • @LogainAblar

The new definition of success changed for sure. There was a time in gaming many years ago when a dev could sell 1,000,000 copies of a game and be called a success. Some devs even found success pushing half that. Take CoD and Fallout out that equation. Mario Kart 8/8 Deluxe sold over 65 million copies. Zelda: BoTW sold over 45 million. Even Metroid Prime: Remastered sold over 1 million copies even though Metroid as a series has never been as successful as Mario/Zelda/Pokemon. This is on Switch. A device that isn't pushing high levels of graphics fidelity, it's not pushing UE5, 4k. The misguided belief that games should be like movies with movie-like budgets was always unsustainable. The chickens have come home to roost.
