This is why there was so much concern about consolidation during the ABK deal. It wasn't console war jealousy...it was because history had already shown that it's a bad thing that generally leads to destruction of companies which in this case is developers.

Sega didn't do anything wrong except for the Saturn. Dream cast was a good console actually, network port and good games. It just list to a DVD player which it didn't have. Sony just released a genius product at the right time.

It makes perfect sense. MS now owns so many IPs. They can fire all the devs and studios and still milk the IPs for all eternity. MS owns the MS Flight Sim IP. They fired the old devs and studio years ago and the IP put in the dungeon. Microsoft then hired a new studio to make a new Flight Sim game and it was successful.

Hey Matty. I work in Marketing. Xbox marketing has always been abysmal. I don't know what absolute bellend decided to reveal & shadow drop a new Xbox IP, into Game Pass day 1. No marketing build up. No press ready from outlets like IGN or yourself. Xbox said they had Hi-Fi Rush on the shelf for a while, but didn't know when to reveal it. Like, what lmao. And then when they ported it to PS5, still no marketing...
I try to be fair about Hi Fi's shadow drop because I think it was a legitimately exciting moment, but if things were this dire... dang WHYYYY
I don't know how true it is, but I read that the shadowdrop was the game director's idea.

Think I'm gonna do the same thing. There are still games on there I'd like to get around to eventually, but I haven't actually used it for a while now cuz I'm playing other games right now that aren't on GamePass. Probably cheaper in the long run if I just wait until games I'm interested in have good sales then just let them sit in my backlog rather than let the subscription keep charging me every month. Especially if it actually goes up to $20 a month.

I am worried for Obsidian. Avowed did not look ready to launch this year. They showed multiple gameplay sections but all from same area/map. I am afraid it will be pushed out unfinished and tank, putting them in the firing line.

It's more likely that Obsidian would probably just become the Treyarch to Bethesda's Infinity Ward and would become another Fallout studio. Goodbye Avowed, Goodbye Pillars of Eternity, Goodbye Outer Worlds, hello New Vegas 2 or whatever Obsidian has in mind for a new Fallout game.

At this point, who cares about consoles? This has less to do with consoles and more to do with game studios and the games.
Xbox could disappear overnight but, what will they decide to do with the games and studios they acquired? They could shut Bethesda down and there goes Fallout and TES. Historically, they can't be trusted not to. Just look at Lionhead.

i believe the core ppl you think of when referring to Obsidian have left and formed another company. But current Obsidian is far from terrible.
Obsidian is probably one of their few good studios left. If Xbox lets them go (at least without trying to sell them) then there is no doubt something is wrong.
And I mean even more so than now.
You know studios from Japan are now going to be weary about collaborating with Xbox on any exclusives.

I chose a great time too lol. Started putting money away in January (just bought a truck so I had to save back up lol) and am buying my parts in the coming week to move to PC after 10 years on Xbox. I’ve wanted to move to PC for years so I don’t think I’ll have any regrets once the console is out the door for good.
EDIT: Just finished buying the parts--R5 7600, 7900 GRE, and 32 GB of RAM. Can't wait for Wednesday!
As someone who’s paid monthly for Xbox live for probably the past 15 years, I actually canceled my gamepass last month. It’s just not worth it. That mixed with the Xbox app getting updates after steam just makes me want to buy the games I want to support. Gamepass just feels dumb to me if you still need to buy all DLC for a game you don’t even own.
Plus it hurts sales of the games that u wanna play cause u didnt buy it.

This is where there needs to be a full $20-22 a month tier for gamepass where you get the game+all the DLC. I'd be subbing to gamepass a couple of months at a time and play through all the games that I want on the service, instead of the month by month thing that I've got going on right now.

The team at arkane lost 70 percent of its people making redfall. after that its a moot point to keep an empty talentless studio open. the talent left as soon as redfall was being worked on. the mistakes were made long long ago.

Its all well and good sayings "arkane austin was a dead studio" but studios aren't fixed entities, they can hire people, talent can get better. If we look at sony the horizon games were made by the studio that made killzone, like investing in studios to let them grow is a thing that works, xbox just doesn't ever seem to be willing to do that because they seem to operate on such a short term basis. Imagine what xbox could have been like if 343 was turned into a studio actually worth of the halo franchise

Phil saved Xbox and I have supported him most his tenure. But the last 2 years he’s made strange out of character decisions randomly. And I wonder often if it’s pressure from Microsoft corporate on him to do these things. But also part of me wonders if he’s been a really good pretender for a long time. I’m very thankful for his tenure because he saved my preferred platform from going under, and has done some awesome things for gaming over the last 10 years. But lately he’s lost a lot of my respect and support. And in the same way he saved the brand he’s slowly killing it.

Arkane's closure makes sense. 75% of the staff already left during the development of Redfall. That's the reason. It was a building with 10 people.
What? They replaced all those people with new hires. It wasn't an empty building but the core of the studio and all the veterans are gone.
This is literally untrue. It was a fully staffed studio, just a lot of the original people left. But it's not like it didn't have new people working there.
That and Arkane never made commercial hits. Their games were critical hits but never sold very well.

I've been considering getting a ps5 but I'd probably never sell my Xbox to do it. I have such a large catalog of games I've bought over decades and the series x can play most of it even back to Xbox original games. I feel like I'd be losing money when I probably have over a grand worth of games I'd never be able to play again if I sell it. Maybe I'm weird or old but I don't know why you'd sell one console to buy another these days
People doing things like this is the weirdest thing to me. If I were to ever buy a console, it's because it has games on it I want to play. This sort of situation wouldn't really change that.
With that said, I don't really buy consoles anymore. But I have seen this kind of thing done often over silly drama. "I sold my xbox and bought a PS5" ... it's dumb.
Nier Automata is great..and one of those niche titles that are few and far between these days....Nier Replicant is also great....just know with both titles that you need to replay them several times (with minor differences between each playthrough) to get to the ending

Without Gamepass I normally would never have played games like Nier Automata, Control, Snow Runner, or Doom Eternal. Also saving me from spending any money on Halo Infinite or Starfield has genuinely paid for itself in over the past two years.

I am still convinced that all they are trying to do is buy the IP for the games, keep them around long enough and then close them. It's happening right here. Give it another couple of years, they'll announce the sequel to Hi-Fi Rush and in marketing will say that they brought in people who made the first one to make it

Chris Avellone and so many of the old devs that worked on Fallout NV are long gone. Modern Obsidian is like Modern Bungie. Completely different studio compared to the old days.

I don’t even care about X box AAA games, we already know they can’t make those. The only games I’ve cared about from X box were their smaller unique games like Psychonauts 2, Pentiment & Hi-Fi Rush. Without those there’s no reason to even pay attention

The problem that game pass faces is that theres a lot of players who just stick to the same games they always play. Like me for example. Game pass offers me absolutely nothing. Id rather buy my 5 games that will last me for ages like the fallouts, TES, Starfields, etc. These games HURT game pass as they are meant to be played for decades. Why ON EARTH would you use a subscription service if your going to play the same few games for years. I dont understand how Xbox didnt see such a huge flaw is its philosophy
There's also plenty of players like me who don't play the same 5 games every year, I buy both indie, AA, and AAA games depending if they interest me or not. For me, I would abuse gamepass by getting the latest newest games at the 70 dollar price tag.
You're speaking for yourself there, buddy. Not everyone plays the same game forever. I'm one of those who have a huge backlog on GP (and outside of GP) I'm playing through. Not just sticking to the same games the entire time.
But I'd say that the vast majority of people are consumers who rush to the next latest popular thing until they get bored and move on to the next one.
@@TheCybercoco It’s true. There was that article on how 60 percent of playtime last year went to 6+ year old games. No one realistically has the time to be playing even a quarter of what Xbox game pass has to offer especially when they add and remove games every month unless you’re a shut in loser.

@@AdamLADPeople have a really hard time reading lol. But yeah, I’m 100% with you. I play BGS games 90% or more of the time on my console, with the other 10% being FIFA, Forza, or No Man’s Sky. Game Pass has no value for me as I don’t care to play almost anything on it (I already own all the games I’d care to play on it anyways). I had a free trial of it for a few months, but I didn’t download anything other than Forza Horizon 4, which I played for like 2 hours and moved on from. On top of that, I’d rather own my games than rent them, and I think a lot of people are in that boat with me.
If Microsoft close Obsidian or Ninja Theory, I will never forgive them.
Ninja Theory is most likely done after this, if Xbox doesn't just close them tomorrow. The game was revealed too soon, it was shown off too much, and I really think that is going to bite them in the ass for player count. For the love of god, someone please keep Obsidian and InXile safe.
Tameem Antonaides, the founder of Ninja Theory left a few weeks ago. The studio will be closed in a few months to a year.

Hi Fi Rush might have looked like a small game made by an indy developer, but it wasn't - there was over 100 people on the development team and it took almost 5 years to make...
I would have bought Hi-Fi Rush but no physical copy is a no go. If its not on the disc it dont exist.
Almost everything can be pirated after the fact if someday it unable to redownloaded. Especially a breakout hit like hi fi.

Nothing about a dying media format on locked consoles who's creators are eager to make digital only for next gen appeals to me anymore.

What is funny is the opposite is what is actually happening. These companies are growing at record rates and pulling in profit at a ridiculous pace. Their spending is way up due to AI infrastructure but the stock prices continue to rise because they are cutting other costs and creating inflation by raising prices. They are taking advantage of consumers to fuel their investment in AI.

I always knew this Gamepass nonsense was going to blow up.
I remember back when Activision were being bought, that in the face of all the valid concerns being brought up trying to stop the purchase, people in the comments didn't even pay attention and threw a tantrum solely on the basis that they wanted Activision's games on Gamepass.
And I was looking at it all like: "Are we potentially going to threaten the integrity of the whole industry for the sake of not paying for a couple of games?" But these are the same people who'll tell you that's morally right to pirate a game, so no point in trying to argue there.
Activision's purchase happened, and sure enough, it blew up... I just wasn't expecting it to blow up in XBOX's face so quickly.
I don't pirate new games, but I do have a few emulators, which is functionally the same.
In instances where the company either no longer exists or no longer sells a game, it is not morally wrong to pirate, usually older games that require physical copies or hardware in limited collectors quantities. That and my hands are too big and painful to play GameBoy, GBA, or DS anymore.
I'm honestly convinced at this point that the decision to purchase Activision-Blizzard was the end of Xbox. I had no interest in any active Activision properties, and getting confirmation now that the existing studios under Microsoft's umbrella are all on the chopping block, I don't expect Microsoft to have ANYTHING I'm interested in anymore.
They deadass bought CoD just to burn every decent franchise under their belt.
It's the ESG investment money drying up and the 0 interest loans dropping off that makes all these companies rethink their fiscal future and are in a panic mode trying to cut any and all possible loss in future revenue.

It sounds good on paper to say take the risk develop the games if you build it, we will come. That’s not true. Prey didn’t sound like it needed too. That was a great game. Dishonored 1 & 2 same thing. Great games guess what we didn’t buy them. Now here we are why didn’t you let them try and make a sequel the reasoning was simple because it would not sell. Square literally just finished saying they are having trouble making money. Sony told us not too long ago. They are having trouble making money. Why get mad when they say it’s hard out here to make money you know what we’re going to focus on titles that will bring in revenue. That is their plan. Go where the money is because you can’t run a studio without money. Imagine all those people developing a game and it doesn’t sell then how do you pay them?
All this talk about they should’ve done this. They should’ve done that. Guess what if it was your money that’s not what you would’ve done. We can say that because we are on the outside looking in but as someone who works in Finance, who looks at numbers all day long , you have to worry about cost and sales. It makes no sense to build something to make something that people won’t purchase. Again is having that problem.with FF7 Rebirth. They literally had to turn around and say man we have to finish this series, but sales are going to be a problem.

It's over for Xbox. Horrible brand with horrible games and horrible decision-making, all of those games are coming to PS anyway. Just for the record, because they were considering it and it could still happen one day, Sony hasn't shut down Media Molecule. They shut down London Studio instead.
Media Molecule is still around. The voices were rightfully there, although those studios were averall not as critical for Sony.
