I'm a Viet Nam vet and we were treated like shit when we came home. Our own government just swept us under the rug like we weren't even worth thinking about. I lost so many buddies over there and even more when we came back to drugs and suicide. To the few of us still alive after all these years, you aren't alone buddy, I've got your 6. The black dude at the end always tears me up. He is saying "Bill, Bill, it's me Jacoby. You saved my life brother."

Hey Merlin. I know it doesn't make it right, but when our buddy came home from the Gulf in the 90's we were keenly aware of how you were treated and made sure to meet him at the airport and cheer him home at the top of our lungs. I wish we were there for you guys too🙏

So, the song makes me cry every single time i hear it. But this time... YOU made me cry. The way you expressed your frustrations (especially around Veteran's Day) brought me to tears.
I'm not a veteran. My Dad was a pilot in the USAF and was killed in Vietnam while flying a mission in the OV-10 Bronco. He was posthumously presented the Medal of Honor. Capt. Steven L. Bennett.
I am the president of the OV-10 Bronco Association, which does business as the Fort Worth Aviation Museum, in Ft. Worth, TX. It is my honor to work alongside many veterans, and I try so hard to make sure they are made as whole as I can. But im just me...I cant fix as much as I truly want to fix. We have to find a way to serve our veterans in ways they deserve.
Thank you for your service and the service of your fellow service members. Combat or not, you served. You signed on the dotted line that so many of us did not. So, thank you.
I see this song hit you to the core. Im so sorry it caused that reaction, but I also am so proud of the reaction....it means you take service to heart. I appreciate that. God Bless.

As a 23 year vet who went to trashcanistan multiple times, lost 5 friends and such..5FDP uses videos to tell the stories of their lyrics. They have several other songs that you will probably come across, “Gone Away” and a more. I have watched hundreds of reactions to this song and it’s always the vet reactions that take it the hardest. Amazing reaction and you should listen to more of them. Semper Fi brother. 8 years Marines, 15 years Army.

20 year retired Air Force veteran. I was not in combat but serving overseas I learned to freeze when I heard a rifle being charged by "friendly" forces who would shoot and ask questioned later. One of my troops missed being bayoneted when he surprised one of the friendly soldiers. Being in so called friendly areas could be hazardous. Foreign troops. When told to guard an area and kill trespassers, they did it.

This song & video gets me every time. I lost my younger brother 01/26/15 to suicide. He'd spent 5 years in the Army & deployed twice. He was out barely 6 months when I got the call from the police saying he was gone, forever 25. He'd spent the day before at my house with myself, my son/his nephew, and my now ex-husband (who was a Marine Corps veteran himself who still dealing with PTSD). The guilt we both still feel not seeing the signs is still something we struggle with. My ex deployed to Iraq from 2006 to 2007 when we were 20, married less than 6 months. It took years for him to open up about even a little bit of what he experienced. But he also said they were there to protect poppy fields for heroin more than for an actual war against America, which made what both sides of innocent lives loss that much worse. Many died for no reason. The things he saw, what they had to do to try & keep fellow brothers & sisters in arms alive still haunts him almost 20 years later #22TooMany

I just wanted to say, thank you for noticing some of the things I've seen many other reactors miss. To this day, this band still does a segment at each of their concerts where they honor vets and during a different song, cancer survivors. They get a lot of flack in the press sometimes, but their hearts are in the right place. (and yeah, USAF 1989-1993, so it matters to me)

While this song hits closer to home for a lot of modern veterans, you should check out Motorthead's "1916". It's a gut punch along the same lines, and Lemmy's vocals are just wrenching. It's about a WWI British soldier. I won't spoil it, but it's a mindfuck. Beautiful song, but hard to listen to.

I just lost my father back in October, he was a marine, he was discharged right before they froze them. So he missed the Vietnam war by the skin of his teeth. I’m thankful he did. His father was also a marine, he did not miss WW2. I grew up knowing the phrase, once a marine, always a marine. I joined the Navy, my father and grandfather teased me endlessly about it, always called me a swabe! I’m 55 now, but as a 19 yr old girly girl, I told my father I didn’t choose the marines because I still wanted to be a girl. He liked to tease, but I think he was proud that I served. Anyway, Semper Fi!

Also, i was born in the naval hospital by Lejeune.

Im not a veteran. I wanted to serve my country, but was rejected due to having epilepsy. I did marry into a military family though. A goal i have is to independently open housing facilities for all veterans with aminaties, free meals, free healthcare by nonbiased Dr's, and anything else that can help our vets adjust to life. By doing it independently that means absolutely NO involvement from the government, because they have failed our service men and women. I've had this goal for awhile and will continue to work towards it. Considering what it would take to accomplish it, i still have a lot of work to do.

Five Finger Death Punch has written quite a few songs like this. Very powerful lyrics and videos like Gone Away, which I saw you reacted to it, When the Seasons Change, which has to do with policemen, Remember Everything, and Coming Down. There are others, but these songs are amazing. Songs about mental health issues, you can listen to Amity Affliction and songs like All Fu**ed Up, Like Love, Don't Lean on Me and Not Without My Ghosts. Another group mentioning is Dream Theater and they have s song called The Enemy Inside, that talks about soldiers and PTSD they deal with. They even interview military persons before the song starts and gives updates after. Appreciate you listening to this song.

I grew up around vets. One of the most psychologically damaged ones I met was a WWII Army vet who fought in the Pacific. I don't know the details or what campaigns he was in, but he experienced some really, really bad stuff that he couldn't move past. He died in the mid 1970s, a shell of a man whose eyes and skin were yellow from a failing liver caused by decades of drinking himself into oblivion.

I suffer from PTSD and a severe anxiety disorder. I finally disassociated myself from other people other than family and manage to survive. I’m 74 now and sometimes I look forward to leaving this world. I won’t hurt myself but I’m just existing, not really living.

Semper Fi brother! I went to a warzone twice but never saw combat. I was a supportive role and I know Marines who ended themselves after they got out. The adjustments to civilian life is giant depending on many factors. I've experienced both sides of the employment landscape when i didnt work with military (in & out) and when i did. Its night and day and it actually helps being around coworkers who were also prior military. Lastly id like to tell everyone that in my experiences, one thing I've come to realize why there may be so many issues with Veterans becoming homeless or just not adjusting is that usually in some capacity you leave a job where you are in charge kf others to having to start over again from the bottom per se. Thats an adjustment in itself. The leadership structure is differently arranged and even how its earned. I think you had an authentic reaction and explained yourself really well.

I never had the honor of serving my country, I thank you for your service. I'm currently 55, and the problem is this is the America neither of us grew up in. The sad part is I don't see it ever coming back either. God bless you and any other vet that sees this reaction.

I appreciate the real response to your experiences. I can honestly say that this song cuts to the heart of our nation that we need to find ways to support the citizens that have supported our natin, combat or not. I was not in combat but felt the impacts to my family and seen it in others and as others family members that have experienced combat its shocking. U cant know unless u have experienced this, and we should put those that have sacrificed on the highest pedestal. God Bless America and those that sacrificed all to protect our freedoms. Remember leaders should not say these patriots are "Suckers and losers" " I only like winners" .

100% Every Vet should get a paid holiday on Veterans day. Mandated by law. They (you know who they are) all start these wars, but we fight and finish the wars. (even tho its never over, and never forgotten) We get no help when we get out, and if we aren't the lucky ones that are able to make it work, we get lost and forgotten in the system. (and the unlucky ones (the ones the video is talking about) don't even get lost in the system. They just end up lost. Until the next war. (BTW this song and video is 11/10 years old. The song is from 2013 and the Video was first released August 11, 2014. Those numbers are 10 YEARS OLD!!!! Imagine what they are today....

Also served during 9-11. Also not a combat vet. Was NBC attached to an air defense unit on Fort Stewart at the time. We were still training National Guard and Reservists for Bosnia and Kosovo.
Got a heart for my fellow veterans and thankfully my church does too. Put together a veteran appreciation bbq for the men and women who served, and their families, just to show my brothers and sisters some love. Not on Memorial Day, not on Veterans Day, set apart on a day not associated with soldiers to fellowship with one another.

That's awesome of you and your community to do. We (including me) need to try to do more as a nation. You'd think we would have learned by now. For you to do it on a random day is really great. It doesn't come off as an empty thank you because the day calls for it. Thank you for your service and Semper Fi.

This video is older. Think how horrendous those numbers are now. Thank you for your service. Just an FYI, FFDP fully support the troops through donations as well as doing shows for them. It is my understanding that one band member is certified to teach marshal arts to the troops. I think, if I remember right, the only civilian with that certification. They love the troops as we all should.

As a veteran also and currently homeless with my kids, this song gets to me. Fighting with my local va to better services to help our brothers and sisters in arms and their families is exhausting, but I won't give up for my family nor other families going through the same struggles. I help any homeless veteran I come across with food and a drink and sometimes just someone to talk to. Thank you brother for your service

If there is a government agency that needs more people, it isn’t the IRS. The VA needs more people helping our fellow veterans to get the help they desperately need. These statistics are not okay. The average VA claim, is taking 6 months or more to be processed.

Idk if this is appropriate to say here or not. this is not bait or anything.
just wanted to say how far this song reaches. A veteran is a Vet no matter the location. and they're mistreated the moment they are not needed or they are not of use as a meat to throw at the bombs.
I'm not American. I'm Iranian (and I want our current regime to go and b*rn down as the rest of 70 million people,) I now live in Canada and my sister is in California. My dad is a veteran of Iran-Iraq war. He still has bomb and bullets' shreds (idk what they're called) inside his waist and legs. I wasn't born then but my sister was born two years after the war started. He speaks English as much as a "hello, how are you, how much," but he teared up [internally] when he saw this video. I translated the statistics and stuff for him but not the lyrics. Yet, he almost cried. I have never seen him cry, I have heard him cry on the phone but never seen it in my 24 years of life.
He didn't go for our country to be like how it is today. He didn't go so the gov can abuse the name of his martyr friends to to fuck with other countries while our own people suffer.
It's horrendous how all over the world those on power abuse the efforts and sacrifices of soldiers and martyrs only treat them like a worn out punching bag,
