How long does a sow stay in your herd? I would assume they get culled if they fail to catch on the second insemination, but how long do you keep a productive sow in your herd? I raised hogs on a small scale. We seldom kept a sow past her forth litter because her body weight had reached a point we couldn't handle her safely anymore and we felt she risked crushing her piglets. I had not seen the stalls set up so they would lift before. That certainly must make weaning much easier.
The sows are in loose housing for most of their gestation. In our experience the sows actually have more feet and leg issues when they're in an open pen compared to in a stall.
I talked this over with our nutritionist a few weeks ago, he says there's only $1.50/pig feed savings to split sex feeding. Not sure that it's worth the hassle of sorting.
Instead of giving these pigs a somewhat happy lives you put them in a tiny cage and no I am not a vegan but I am against animal abuse like this I do Spearfishing youre additionally teaching your daughter how to be the same.
What makes you think this is cruel? The pigs have heat, excellent food and water. They can wander around in that pen. How do you imagine they live in the wild? They spend most of their lives hungry. Are subject to endless illnesses and parasites. Are subject to attacks by predators. This life is different than the life they would live in the wild, but far better and easier for them to survive.

When do you give your shots to the piglets if not at weaning?
I feel sad for the sows that have to spend their entire lives in small crates, confined so long they have trouble walking.
