    What an excellent and comprehensive tutorial! You have broken it down into easily understood steps. I really appreciate it and I know others will too. The mic feature is why I bought this keyboard. The customizable effects are really a surprise, considering the price point. I also am using a Sure mic and I'm glad you mentioned the new mic that works so well for you. I look forward to that review also. Another great video! 😊 Thank you...

    Trying to decide which keyboard to buy and a mic output is one of the features I need. There is so little information out there in the RUclipsverse about this. Thank you for the very detailed explanation (some of it was over my head). I foresee coming back and watching this video several more times once I have my E473 up and running.

    Yeah! That mic button to turn reverb off or mute is fantastic. I've performed for years and dealt with vocal effects being on or off during a performance, and sure, there are ways, but none are as easy as this or as reliable. And the fact that I can send files with vocals directly to a computer, that's awesome. Thanks, I will subscribe and keep watching your videos as I wait for my keyboard to show up.

      Yeah it’s such a simple small thing to add but omg so useful! And the built in audio interface is also a feature that doesn’t get talked about nearly as much as it should - I had a Yamaha P125 that had that, and it made it so much better than the competition. Roland finally added that into their FP-X upgrades to the FP line, but Casio still isn’t including it (no idea why).
      Thanks for subscribing hope your keyboard arrives soon!

    Great review on the Yamaha e473 and ew425. I have been spending a substantial amount of time researching the different makes of electronic type of piano/arrangers to purchase for my daughter who is a song writer and performer. She will only use the instrument for song writing and said a more complete key board (76 keys) and recording functions is most important but now with the mic offered in these 2 key boards checks all the boxes and much, much more. I have been struggling with price points, trying to stay under $300 but (thanks to this video and the overall , comprehensive tutorial) knowing what I do now, I feel the EW425 is the perfect choice which makes paying the extra money justified. Again, greatly appreciate your expertise.

      @@PianoTone Thanks! One quick question... I'm having trouble connecting the USB to lightning to my phone or iPad, to record into GarageBand so it doesn't pick up my hands hitting the keys. It works SOMETIMES... but usually not. I don't think its the printer cable, i think something with the power its recieving. I have the USB to lightning camera adapter. Should i be using something else that can support USB-C or some kind of power, like a lightning to MIDI/printer cable? Seems like its not getting enough power. i have the usb to lightning with no extra power slot for a lightning to AC, maybe thats what i need? :( Thanks!

      @@_boston_mac I've often run into frustration with connecting to GarageBand to record audio. Sometimes it can be if you have headphones connected to the iPad headphone port and it misinterprets that as another audio input. So since the USB audio interface sends audio in both directions, I monitor my recording using the headphones on the piano instead. I have an older video on that procedure if you want to check it out (the link starts at the part of the video with the demo); it's not on the E473/EW425 it's on my Yamaha P-125 but the steps are the same - if you need to turn off audio loop back when I mention it, that will be in your menu somewhere).

    Very nice and complete video. It answered all the questions in my head. Very calming voice.
    I am only curious about one thing. For example, if I want to put two microphones. Is it possible to just use a simple splitter (2 to 1 adapter). My guess is that mic signals would interfere each other. Anyway, what would you do in this situation if I want two mic input?

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  2 года назад +1

      You could try a splitter and see what happens - I’m not sure if the amp on the keyboard might struggle with that or not. A simple mixer might work better but to be honest I’m not sure. I might try an experiment on this at some stage …

    Something to note: I ran across this today when I looked up display and the e473. Last year the E473 had issues with the Display not being broight all across it, light and dark spots on the screen. But comments I sawsaid the following. issue resolved: "Update Oct 2022 - Yamaha now has a permanent fix and new units no longer has this issue. The PSR-E473 remains massive value for money keyboard, you just need to get a replacement keyboard if you encounter this issue." So that is probably why both of these models are selling out so quickly in 2023. That and your excellent comprehensive review. :) I would have gotten the EW425 instead of the E473 but they were already sold out. I have to admit some of my decision was influenced by the fact that the Casio could be manufactured in China and Yamah manufactures in India. China is a gamble right now with their approach to the pandemic and isolating people rather than vaccinating them. And you're right the Mic played a major influence too. Thanks

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  Год назад +2

      Yeah I’d heard about that a while ago; there were a lot of posts at first then about the issue but it seems to have calmed down. I never owned a 473 but made a point of checking on display models in local stores and never saw the issue; also asked the keyboard manager at my store if he had heard anything about this and it was a no. Good to hear from Jeremy that Yamaha has corrected whatever the issue was!

    Hi Tony, thanks very much for your videos on this keyboard I recently bought and I am quite happy I did. Your videos are clear and very helpful. I did try a microphone but sent it back, because it didn't work. I could not hear myself singing through my headphones. It might have been a volume matter. I maximized the gain knob, though. But in your video I learn about the volume setting in the function menu. It also was a rather cheap mic. My question: you have mentioned all the output capabilities, I suppose you get the microphone signal through your headphones as well?

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  Год назад +1

      Thanks a bunch, glad you're liking the videos!
      Yes the mic signal goes through the headphones, the speakers, the USB audio out and the line outs. What mic did you try - it needs to be a dynamic mic, not a condenser (condensers need phantom power, the keyboard doesn't have that). It needs to be connected to the mic input, not the aux in (I've had people ask me if the aux in works for the mic and it does not). Then there is the gain knob on the back, the mic volume within the menu, AND the toggle buttons on the keyboard itself to switch between talk (no effects) - vocals (effects) and mute (nothing).
      Hope that helps! Thanks again for checking out the channel feel free to subscribe

      Hi there! Never heard of that but just looked it up - the PSR-SX 700/900 mic port is a combo mic / guitar (line) input (there is a switch to go back and forth). The PSR-EW425 and 473 don’t have that feature (so mic only)

      Thanks so much glad you enjoyed the video! The input is set to a mic level not a line level, so it's not designed for line level instruments. Loving your videos sir... i have owned a tyros 2 and recently bought tyros 4. I am tempted to sell the t4 as its bulky with speaker system , given the ew425 is an entry but level board, are the voices noticeably inferior to t4 ? I also have a Casio CTX5000 which i rather like for the Aix chip and portability...

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  2 года назад +2

      Thanks so much! I've never played a Tyros before, but looking at the voice list for the Tyros 4 it looks like the main piano voice on the Tyros 4 is a "Super Articulation" grand piano sample which I THINK is upgraded from the Tyros 3 main piano sample which is the !Live Concert Grand sample found on the PSR-E373, E473 and EW425. I THINK that the super articulation piano on the Tyros 4 might be the main piano sound on the PSR-SX700 and 900 (but I could be wrong :)
      That being said I see many voices that appear to be common from the Tyros 4 and the EW425; many of the !Live !Sweet and !Cool voices look to be the same; whether they sound the same, better or worse on the E473/EW425 I don't know - the Tyros has 128 polyphony vs. 64 on the PSR's, but the PSR's processing is 10 years newer so that could make a difference as well.
      The Tyros 4 weighs 10 pounds more than the EW425 and that's without your speakers so you would definitely have a more portable option with the 425.

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  Год назад +1

      I would have to try that to tell; I’m assuming you’d need to pre amp the guitar to get a strong enough signal, but that in turn might be dangerous to the port on the keyboard. And since you can only record multi track songs ON the keyboard as MIDI (no audio) you’d only be able to record the guitar to a flash drive anyways (and would then still need to move the wav file to a pc or tablet DAW to insert into a multi track song) so to be honest there isn’t much point in trying to use the keyboard for that.

      Take a look at the Samson Q2U (I have this mic and use it for everything now); it is a dynamic mic (connects to amps, keyboards, PAs) with either the include XLR cable or a 1/4" TR cable (or XLR to TR adapter - you need one of those for the 473/425 keyboard btw), but it is ALSO a USB mic so yes it could connect to your mac (assuming you have a USB port or USB hub for your mac).

    Great video thanks! I have a quick question regarding the 1/4" plug for the mic. I just got the 473 last night and wanted to try the mic feature. I have a Shure 58 and an XLR to 1/4 TRS cable and tried to get sound but I could not. I tried all the settings. Do I need a TS and not a TRS 1/4 plug? Is that the problem? TIA

      Mine is TS and it works great; I don't have a TRS mic cable to test with but that probably is the issue (as long as you've already checked the mic gain knob on the back to make sure it's up, the mic volume within the settings menu, and that you're not set to mute with the mic toggle button on the panel).
      I'm betting it is the TRS that's the issue; let me know if a TR fixes it! And thanks for checking out the channel, feel free to subscribe

      Ports (and almost everything) is identical between the 473 and the 425. Only differences are 425 has:
      - 76 keys. :)
      - better 2nd piano voice (main one is the same)
      - enhanced organ sounds
      - bigger speakers
      Other than that the same. And the onboard octave +/- buttons will make 61 keys way better than on the E463 where you had to dive into the menu to do that; when it’s easy the fewer keys are less of an issue

      I'm still a little confused. The Mic came in but I don't have the keyboard yet. I need some clarification. as for the Mic input on the back, is it a 1/4" port or a XLR? The cords that came witht he Mic has a USB cord and one that is 3 pronged. I assume that the 3 pronged is XLR? But no 1/4" cord. I see you can buy an adapter from XLR 3 pronged to 1/4". So is there a XLR port on the keybaord or a 1/4"? I found the following. -- A microphone with a 1/4″ jack is usually a high-impedance, unbalanced mic. That means that the cable doesn't need to exceed 20′ or so. -- So that brought up a whole nother topic. What is balanced or unbalanced and is a XLR cord with adapter going to be Balanced or Unbalanced and does it even matter? But most important what is the port on back going to look like when I get my E473? Will it be 1/4" or XLR? Or is it a USB port? Oh, I forgot to mention, the Mic I got is the one you recommended the Samson through your link. Thanks.

    Hi Tony I tried my mic in the keyboard for the first time today. I couldn't get any sound no matter the settings. I'm connecting my mic XLR cable to an Amazon Basics XLR female to 1/4 TRS male adapter. The only way I could get sound was if connecting the mic with the adapter through my mixer and connecting the mixer output using my (mono) guitar cable to the mic input on the keyboard. I can only assume that the XLR to 1/4" adapter I'm using being TRS or stereo is hindering the sound.... did you have any issue of the sort? Thanks.

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  2 года назад +2

      What kind of mic? If it's a condenser mic it needs phantom power to work (which the keyboard won't provide but your mixer probably does). You need a dynamic mic for that port.
      As far as the adapter goes that could also be the issue; the mixer might be able to understand the TRS coming in whereas the keyboard might not. Assuming that is the issue, then I'd recommend getting a mic cable that is just XLR to TR (as opposed to an adapter)
      Hope that helps, let me know how it goes!
