I feel its different with every gecko cuz like when I first got my male, Desna, he was SUPER jumpy but when you took the time to let him calm down he'd love to chill with you. Now he LOVES being handled and will usually jump up onto my chest and I'll cover him with my hand and he'll just kind of curl up and chill with me. He's so a cool gecko. It just takes time with them.
First things first, don't handle babies too much. They're more susceptible to dropping their tails when stressed, and as we all know Cresties don't regrow their tails. Now if you weigh your animals monthly this might be hard cuz you'll have to handle the gecko while still small. If you regularly weigh your animals or need to handle them for other important reasons I'd suggest handling the gecko semi-regularly in short intervals. For starters, if you just got the gecko don't handle it for the first 3 weeks. Babies take a bit longer to settle in and get used to the new noises around them and the new surroundings. After the 3 weeks start putting your hand by the gecko every other night. Don't try to pick them up, just put your hand in front of them. I feed my geckos every other night so if you follow the same routine, when you go to feed them just place your hand in front of them. At first they may run away immediately. But if they don't, keep your hand in front of the gecko for 5 minutes. If they let you have your hand by them for a full 5 minutes, continue doing it for 2 weeks. After the 2 weeks, bump it up to 10 minutes. Once they have no issue with your hand by them, for any length of time, try scooping the gecko into your hand. Slowly slide your hand underneath the gecko from the front of their face. Try this every night until the gecko calmly walks onto your hand, rather than runs away. Once you can do this, you can start taking them out and handling them regularly. Be aware that even once it calms down more, that babies are still more jumpy than adults and until it gets older it'll be more prone to jumping.
I've had my little guy for two months now and I love him :) We're still noooot quite there yet with the handling situation but he's a joy to watch bumbling around in his tank. I've learned that he's a fussy eater, is scared of bugs, LOVES himself some CGD, mushed up mango, his coconut house and watching me play the sims. He's a good cat.
You probably don’t remember me but I’ve wanted a crestie for three years and I asked you about tank sizes. I’m finally getting one at the beginning of June after I get back from my half term holiday! Showing my parents your videos has finally convinced them along with me being older now so thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us on RUclips!
my gecko iris she just wants to go as high as possible (aka my head) i was walking around my house with her on my head and she jumped to my dads head :D HE WAS NOT HAPPY XD
I'm not sure how much this would actually help, but one thing I've been doing is simply letting my crested gecko sniff/lick my hand before touching her or picking her up. For my gecko at least, it doesn't seem to freak her out like it would if I were to pick her up without letting her smell my hand. Once I just put my open palm in front of her for her to decide whether or not she wanted to be held. What she did was step onto my hand and use it to get onto one of the taller plants in the terrarium. :P So she trusts me enough to use me as a tool at least. Haha!
Watching this 8 years later, and you're still helping newbie crested gecko owners! I thought I was doing something wrong, and they hated me because they tried to get away. So encouraging to see that yours does like mine!
I've just gotta say--I have been planning to get a crested gecko for many months now and Im the type of person that when I get something new, whether its a pet or a household item, I do a TON of research. Learning more and more about the new thing makes me so excited!! I have been super impatient waiting for the day to come when I finally pick out my gecko (November 20th) and your crested gecko videos have helped me get through the past few days!! I love your videos and your girls are just so sweet. :)
Thank you so much for encouraging me :) Its kind of odd that it did, but really, I was having some SERIOUS doubts about getting my first crested gecko as a BABY. But now that I have a little bit of fuel for my dream for him to be as tame as yours, I am ready to do whatever it takes! Your videos have really helped me in the past, right now, and probably some time in the future. Thank you so much for doing what you do, and doing it well :) I hope you read this heartfelt comment! It would make my life
This video is perfect! I'm getting my crested gecko this weekend and was worried it wouldn't like me. Your videos have been a huge help, I've been watching your videos all day.
I love their little hands so much- I have so many videos of my little girl Spoons walking around just because I love watching the way she walks and her hands
I just brought my crestie home today! I’m so happy, and this video was helpful and wonderful! I appreciate that you use your own helpful advice, rather than taking the first ten things on the internet and making a video about it! This is great, and I love that you’ve shown us your Gecko, too!
So tomorrow im getting a crested gecko from my cousin. Comes with a tank and a few decorations. Never had a gecko but ive had a beardie and a snake. This video helped me so much. Im gonna go out and buy some live plants and a coconut for the tank and i feel like i can actually take care of the gecko and help it thrive. So thankss!! I definitely will subscribe and watch more videos!!
I rescued a crestie as a result of somebody throwing him in the trash (with cage) I didnt know much about them when i got Pyral, but he is doing very well. He still has his tail and is VERY friendly, when i hold him i usually have a tub that i fill with thin towels and rest him in, he loves tunneling through them and he sometimes even sleeps in the layers. But he hasnt had any issues with handling since i got him, the only real problem is that he doesnt eat insects due to his cage being infested when i first got him. Pyral is happy with his pudding though (it is mango and cricket flavoured!) Overall, even knowing nothing about him when we met, we have formed a nice bond (of sorts) over the past year
I would just like to say thank you. I was doing a lot of research on which Gecko breed fit with our family. Due a large part to your thorough videos, and lots of other research as well, the crested was the winner. I set up a terrarium and everything in advance to ensure humidity levels and such, with the help of your videos. And today I am going to make a journey to a breeder that is about an hour away to pick up our new family friend. So not only have you helped me make sure they are happy when they get here, but you have also put out the perfect video for me today. Thank you so much for taking the time to help people get started with this species.
aww that's great to hear :D I'm so glad you took your time to choose the perfect gecko for you :D and it seems this video was great timing haha :) I hope all goes well with your new pet :D
Biggest tip when handling a gecko or any small creature tbh, never be afraid to be bitten by it.. at all, ever. If you're tense and afraid of the bite or possibility of the sudden lunge, you're much more likely to hurt the ~gecko~ from your shunt reaction to it. Think of it as cute rather than painful, cause it really is just cute.
Mine dropped his tail when he turned 9 years old... i was feeding him some isopods and he got over stimilated and wagged his tail turned to look at his own tail and bit it instead of the isopod and scared himself and dropped it
I was bitten my two month old crestie and it didn't hurt. I literally did not notice he was biting me until I saw him and he let go immediately. Worrying about that would be a bit innesesary, but if they are biting a lot then they are very stressed. I'm still working about not stressing my crestie! Keep up the work!
I have only had my crested gecko since August and for the longest time was afraid of handling her for the same reasons she mentioned in this video(tail dropping, being bit also her jumping away from me and getting lost or hurt) but one day I just sucked it up and what I did was I gently put the palm of my hand under her front area and waited and she climb right on! And she is actually pretty calm for a crestie although she does jump.
Thank you so much for all your videos on crested's. I just got my Loki last Saturday, and he is doing so well. He is a juvenile, so currently I have him in a 10 gallon horizontal tank with plenty of vines, plants, and branches for him to climb on. I also have a hide that he can go up into if he pleases. In 6 months to a year I plan on buying an exoterra. Right now it's just money issues since I started up college. Today I added some New Zealand Sphagnum Moss for him and as soon as I put it into his tank he wanted to check out what it was. He's very tame already. I can pet his back while handling him at night and he doesn't seem to mind. He doesn't breathe too fast while handling him, and seems to be settled into his new home already. Currently I have him on Pangea Fruit Mix Watermelon and Mango. That stuff smells so good it even made me hungry. He loves to climb all over my shoulders and back. I mist him about 3 times a day. The only problem I'm having is that I live in Florida and the heat gets so bad here even with the A/C on it gets around 80 - 82 degrees in the house. Will he be fine in those temperatures? After I mist the tank it tends to go down to 77 - 79 degrees. Just worried the temperatures might stress him out. Come winter it won't be a problem though.
Update: he's a she I think! Tried scooping her up today and she made a chirping sound and shook her head like females do when they don't want a male mating with them. Left her alone after that. Good thing Loki works either way.
With warmer weather the breeder of my soon to arrive little 5 month old crestie gave the tip to put a cold pack near the top ventilation. The cold actually drops down into the terrarium she said and you can cool them down a bit like that. That and misting a bit more she said.
Such a helpful video! I love your leopard gecko vids, as I have three. But yesterday I decided to get a cresty. Once she's settled in I'll use your advice to tame her even further (already a good temperament). Thanks for the help!
One thing I’m worried about the biting isn’t the pain..but I might get anxious and surprised and panic a bit, do you have any advice on how to stay calm..? Or maybe be prepared..?
I got a baby crested gecko and me and my brother let it jump from one hand to the other. Then it tried to jump on his face. (Both of them were fine the gecko landed on my foot but it was very funny)
hey Rebecca! I've had my crested gecko for ten months now and I have to say you've helped us so much Your videos are very informative and helpful! even though I've had her for almost a year, she still doesn't have a name, as I am horrible at naming pets. the only things I'm good at naming are ants... and shrimp... just like u haha anyway, she looks a lot like Lyra, and I really like fire/volcano/sun inspired names. I really like the names solstice and umbra, and I'm wondering if u have any other name suggestions for my crestie! thanks for another awesome video! keep up the good work!
You have made a such of beautiful ant natural home for your gecko! Such an inspiration! I will get an gecko in summer or autumn this year, so I'm trying to prepare everything at least in my mind now a few month before. So thanks. c:
My guinea pig once took such a big chunk out of my wrist that I had to get stitches. Meanwhile my snakes don't even strike at me unless it's feeding day 😂
I’m a new crestie owner and I do not have a heat lamp or a light at all. Is that ok? The temp in my home is 73-75 durning the day and 69-72 at night. I keep mine between two windows so she’s not in the dark during the day.
I think lots of plants are a must, especially for you since the tank is so huge. If there aren't many places to climb and hide, then he may get stressed in such a big tank.
If you enjoyed a crested gecko you would definitely enjoy a gargoyle !! They also have the exact same care so if you’ve already taken care of a crested then you know how to care for a gargoyle
Hey fellow comment scrollers! I'm getting my gecko tomorrow and I'm not only extremely excited but I'm either naming mine Coleandra after my dead grandpa or Brendon Marshall after Brendon Urie and Eminem
This is a year late but put your gecko in a safe spot, maybe a closed tub with breathing holes. The simply take everything out. I am a new crested gecko owner therefore I donot have as much decor, which does make it easier
Im so worried about doing something wrong and my crestie dropping its tail but Ive accidentally dropped the nano light fixture on top of the tank (the crestie usually rests higher up) and it flinched a bit but was fine, he has also taken a dive or two for the floor because he would jump for my other hand and miss. he is still very young and today measured 4.45g but yeah, overall this gecko is surprisingly resilient with the stress it can take
I can't seem to find anything online and maybe it's fine but I've been worried about my cresty.. for a bout a week she has been burrowing nonstop and not really sleeping... she is still eating and drinking but it's like she is looking for something in her substrate? still no eggs though.. and she has never been with a male. I just wondered if anyone had any ideas as to her reasoning?
Eek at these responses! I realize this is an old question but for others that may be wondering. Digging in substrate is normal gecko behaviour. Females that dig persistently for 2-3 days are likely laying eggs. Females do not need to be paired to a male to lay eggs- they can lay infertile eggs, sometimes the eggs can also be fertile (parthogenic). If you aren’t sure you can candle them (shine a strong flashlight on them) within 2-3 days of laying you will see a red ring inside (cheerio) if they are fertile. If they are not fertile they will stay yellow and not grow at all and eventually mold.
I've owned a bearded dragon for 5 years and a leopard gecko for 2 and they have to stay with my parents while I'm away at school and i miss them so much. Ive recently been looking into getting a crested gecko and i really want one but I'm not sure if the growing terrarium would be possible for me. Also I spent so much time with my beardie back home and I was wondering if cresties mind being held as much as beardies do? I'm not saying like all day or anything, because i am at college, but when I'm doing homework or just watching tv. thank you formatting this video!
So I've had my Gecko for over a year and she was really friendly the first few months. But then I just stopped taking her out. It was only for a month or two at most. And now whenever I try to take her out she'll run. So I've left her. And when it comes time to clean her tank. She hates it, she runs around the tank, and sometimes jumps at my hand like prey (maybe she thinks I'm food, but is confused) and she is healthy otherwise. At least I think. She eats, drinks. She sleeps in day. But wakes up a bit early. But besides that she's pretty good. I just want to know if leaving her for that long really effected her that much.
Me and my boyfriend recently got a little cresty called Arkham! (We aren't 100% that he's a boy as he's only 10 weeks but that's what we've gone with😂) video was a massive help in starting everything up for our little guy!
Hi there, old video but I hope you can answer. Do you mean not to have the gecko in the same room as other animals, I have dogs, if they're out of their tank? Or even if they are in the tank? I'd like to have the gecko in my office where I work all day but my dogs hang out (sleep) in that room all day as well lol TY
Warning us against having our crested swallowing our hair is oddly specific...
Sophia Pedroza it is but it can happen, it almost happen to me so I put my hair up. My crestie thinks it’s somthing to climb on.
I have a dog and I usually have a lot of hair on my clothes, and they do eat hair on your shirt. I usually get it out of his mouth though.
My crestie always jumps into my hair just so he can sit in the hood of my hoodie. Idk why but he really loves to sit there
It's a risk of impaction.
very helpful for someone who’s hair is down to their belly button
mine doesn't want to come out but when I get her out she doesn't want to go back in.
kyogretk429 ?
my crestie
ok I just realised how that could be misread sorry
Haha I understand this, I don't have a crestie yet, but my snake is this way too lol
Cross games just got mine today

Does he likes to be petted?
xxohmycaptainxx aww
xxohmycaptainxx how often did you handle him to tame him?
I've had my little guy for two months now and I love him :) We're still noooot quite there yet with the handling situation but he's a joy to watch bumbling around in his tank. I've learned that he's a fussy eater, is scared of bugs, LOVES himself some CGD, mushed up mango, his coconut house and watching me play the sims. He's a good cat.
“He’s a good cat.”
XD
Nice cat!
Greeb Greeb a cat?! Omg yes! 😂😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣🤣🤣

Yes yes yes, I’m going to be getting a crestie very soon. And I need to watch *every second of this video*
i love your pronunciation and utterance
aw thank you :D
Am I the only 1 that thinks it's cute when geckos sleep with their legs out? lol
I agree they are sooo cute!
Gavin from experience with baby Jasper, they're adorable when they sleep curled up
like a sploot
Like the stars they are
Ah, mine NEVER does that, Papaya is very strange
I just got a crestie and he's so good at hiding sometimes it takes me like 5 minutes to find him

i love this channel, it seems pet reptiles are disrespected for being reptiles so this makes me happy
You just earned a new subscriber! Im planning on getting a crested gecko. I love them!

I own 3 snakes and feel its time for a change. Always loved crested geckos and looking forward to getting one. Great video and well informed. :)
I really loved this video! Super helpful! And your so easy to listen to! Thank you for all the information!

Also I like the way you always formally tell us all the information perfectly👍🏼✨
aw thanks :D
live plants or nothing for my vivariums,i love watching it grow and flourish and change over time
I love your tank, this is a great video too. Thank you!
your channel is what educated me and inspired me to get my leopard gecko! finally go it yesterday and she/he is 11 weeks old :)
Thank you so much! I'm new to cresties, but have had plenty of anoles and leopard geckos in my days. Very helpful!
I have so much to learn before buying one
Could you do a video on how to prevent/kill grain mites in a mealworms colony?
Mine dropped his tail when he turned 9 years old... i was feeding him some isopods and he got over stimilated and wagged his tail turned to look at his own tail and bit it instead of the isopod and scared himself and dropped it

I get the most advise from you leopard gecko then any other you tubers I'm your biggest subscriber
My gecko dropped his tail and we never found it. I think he might have eaten it.
When my crested gecko bite me (only twice) it felt like a little pinch
it didn’t hurt it was just a shock.
Your channel has eased my nerves so much about my crested gecko!
I got lucky with my crestie. Once I actually get her out she's pretty tame. She can be hard to get out but once she is out she doesn't jump too much.
Thanks ☺️I’m getting a crested gecko for my birthday and you videos have really helped🥰

hey Rebecca!
I've had my crested gecko for ten months now and I have to say you've helped us so much
Your videos are very informative and helpful!
even though I've had her for almost a year, she still doesn't have a name, as I am horrible at naming pets. the only things I'm good at naming are ants... and shrimp... just like u haha
anyway, she looks a lot like Lyra, and I really like fire/volcano/sun inspired names. I really like the names solstice and umbra, and I'm wondering if u have any other name suggestions for my crestie!
thanks for another awesome video!
keep up the good work!
how about to malia its hawiian name for a sea
You have made a such of beautiful ant natural home for your gecko! Such an inspiration! I will get an gecko in summer or autumn this year, so I'm trying to prepare everything at least in my mind now a few month before. So thanks. c:
GrounDInSpace I posted a vid on crested geckos if you want to check it out😉
Thanks! I will! ^_^
I;ve only had my geckos for like 3 days (8 weeks old, got them from a friend who owned a reptile shop) Been getting them out alot as she said
I bought my crestie tailless
me too!
Thanks leopard gecko this helped a lot
no problem, glad it helped :)
It so looked like she was waving :-) adorable.
I'm planning on getting a crested gecko and these videos really help #love your videos
Where did you get your crested gecko from and where do you get the supplies , food, substrate , decor etc
Thanks this was really helpful getting a crested gecko in 4 days
How do I regulate the temperature in my tank? It's summer and I live in a very hot region. It scares me that it could get too hot.
The bite feels like if you've ever been bitten by a typical lizard you'd find outside your house. Just bigger diameter ofc
Can you show us how you set up your tank for your crested gecko
Do you have a video of you building the viv layout? I love your setup !
I just got a created decko and he's got a 75 gal tank but not a lot of climbing places since that wasn't in the budget rn so should I be concerned
I think lots of plants are a must, especially for you since the tank is so huge. If there aren't many places to climb and hide, then he may get stressed in such a big tank.
I pet n handle my crestie in the enclosure .I've only had her Goin on 4mo so been taking it slow...but she doing good !
Where did you get the cups you use for their diet?
How long do you leave until you clean out your crested geckos terrarium ( with or without live plants ) ?
If you enjoyed a crested gecko you would definitely enjoy a gargoyle !! They also have the exact same care so if you’ve already taken care of a crested then you know how to care for a gargoyle
Hey fellow comment scrollers! I'm getting my gecko tomorrow and I'm not only extremely excited but I'm either naming mine Coleandra after my dead grandpa or Brendon Marshall after Brendon Urie and Eminem
Aww! How did things end up going? Now I wanna name one after brendon someday
My little Yoshi is such a weirdo xD I've had him for a couple days now and I'm so in love. Couldn't of asked for a cooler gecko. ❤
I really want a crested gecko and I'm wondering how do you clean the vivatium with all of the decor
This is a year late but put your gecko in a safe spot, maybe a closed tub with breathing holes. The simply take everything out. I am a new crested gecko owner therefore I donot have as much decor, which does make it easier
2 years late but you use wood lice to clean it.
What if my gecko jumps on the floor? Do I catch it quickly or wait?
Im so worried about doing something wrong and my crestie dropping its tail but Ive accidentally dropped the nano light fixture on top of the tank (the crestie usually rests higher up) and it flinched a bit but was fine, he has also taken a dive or two for the floor because he would jump for my other hand and miss. he is still very young and today measured 4.45g but yeah, overall this gecko is surprisingly resilient with the stress it can take
With the fish swim thing, it makes me think about the 7 animal species: Amphibian, Reptile, Insects, Fish, Birds, Mammals, and Crested Geckos....
L19553wn54u7 you should maybe ask a vet, or the gecko could just be stressed, I do hope your gecko is okay though...
Might be infertile, something like how women get there menstrual, it just needs to come out.
Other than that I don't know.
How old is she? It is my sad guess that she might be getting old..
What is the plant with the small leaves called?
‘Oh, my hand is in the geckos mouth’
I've owned a bearded dragon for 5 years and a leopard gecko for 2 and they have to stay with my parents while I'm away at school and i miss them so much. Ive recently been looking into getting a crested gecko and i really want one but I'm not sure if the growing terrarium would be possible for me. Also I spent so much time with my beardie back home and I was wondering if cresties mind being held as much as beardies do? I'm not saying like all day or anything, because i am at college, but when I'm doing homework or just watching tv. thank you formatting this video!
''I'm a big tree" same lol
This was sooooo helpful!!!!
Nice, I should be getting one at Christmas! Well excited ;)
PS, about the biting thingy, rodent bites are wayyy worse than reptile bites! Mainly because reptiles generally don't bite and rodents do though!
Mine she's chill and I have had her for four days she jumps a lot and if she gets too far I just put my hand out a she gets on its awesome
aw that's great to hear :D
What do you do during a power outage for a few hours or few day? Thanks
Great video keep up the great work👍👍
Hi there, old video but I hope you can answer. Do you mean not to have the gecko in the same room as other animals, I have dogs, if they're out of their tank? Or even if they are in the tank? I'd like to have the gecko in my office where I work all day but my dogs hang out (sleep) in that room all day as well lol TY
How long should you let it settle in the terrarium and not touch it? I just got a cresty and she's not getting out of her hide at all
I love reptiles and really lizards but my favorites are bearded dragon
