5:00 Preach!!! Thank you for touching on the "minimalistic POV" that insists in making someone feel bad for owning more than one of anything

  • @sheilaspastelrainbowvision

I noticed a pattern with myself which is that each time I have moved in my lifetime, I end up downsizing my belongings. What happens for me is through life I collect things and it all gets hidden away until I move. When I move I see what all I actually have and take time to sort through my stuff. Which is why I am trying to sort through areas of my home more annually to avoid such a large amount of stuff which I end up letting go of when I move. For example, I keep a box in an closet or space I hardly use and when I sort through areas finding things I don't want to keep, then I place those items in that box to be donated or regifted by the end of the year. This really helps me avoid having too many unwanted items stored in my home. Remember though, that unwanted is up to the owner to decide and never feel pressured to let go of something you want to keep. No judgement on what you keep or let go of. Your free to decide for yourself. Just enjoy life. Peace ✌️

Wow I really needed this video. My Grandparents passed and I inherited alot of items. Ive been holding on to almost all of them alnost like I'm trying to recreate my childhood. You are right I'm not that little girl anymore and having the items isnt bringing them back or making them happy because I kept them. I need to live for myself for today. 💕 this video was so powerful.

During the past two years I learned so much from you. Having to work from home, I noticed furniture pieces that I wasn't needing nor enjoying. So I sold them. I follow two RUclipsrs that are minimalists. They also have given me great ideas. Here is what I have observed of them. Both young ladies live with very little furniture, possessions and bare walls. Yet they both suffer from anxiety and depression (They have shared this). I think some people put a lot of stress on themselves. I am 61 and my goal is to have just what I need and use. Should anything happen to me, I don't want to create a lot of work for my daughter trying to get rid of things. Your content is presented in a logical and healthy way of doing things.

OMG! You are so right. Why do we shame ourselves and each other for our design style choices? I grew up in a Danish modern minimalist home and it got cluttered too. As a matter of fact any tiny thing out of place ruins the perfect affect.

Thank you for this! I’m one of those people who are “embarrassed” to need organizing help. After needing to move at least twice a year throughout HS and undergrad, my default is to have my home “mob hit ready” (i.e., I can pack up my entire home in just a couple of hours and unpack within a day or two). So having a little extra clutter usually means something is wrong.
Plus, I’ve met the wrath of a Judy McJudgyface or two for not having an “AD photo shoot” ready home and maybe I’ve internalized something o& that judgement. Thanks for helping us see that the Judy McJudgyfaces of the world are not the standard.
I think I also have a bit of a toxic relationship with stuff. I think I’m afraid of donating something that later becomes irreplaceable (like those early 2000s plastic IKEA watering cans). I really should get over that. Because sometimes the item I love is replaced by an even better item. 💚

It doesn't make sense but my mind somehow still excuses it. Thank you for making this video kay, you are helping more people then you know!!!

It's definitely interesting how much we assign morality to cleanliness and home upkeep. I remember a conversation I had with a coworker of mine who's a historian about how the Victorians assigned different virtues and traits to your ability to keep your home clean. Apparently owning and taking care of a lot of house plants was a sign of good character!

This is something that I really appreciate about your channel. Demystifying what actually goes through other's minds, or a professional narrative to destigmatize mess n clutter. I also love that we see you, through the course of your library/ catalog of videos... we see you regularly revisiting or reattempting systems in rooms and small spaces. And also the benefit to us of your moving is that the pace has possibly been accelerated and you, a professional and low clutter home, still having to go back to the drawing board. So we nubes and amateurs don't have to be frustrated by the trial and error, or ashamed by the feelings of failure. And we see often that even when something or a system has served you well in a space, sometimes that it was transitional and its utility has ended. Nothing lasts or works forever, no matter how good or useful it was, even when it's well cared for.

A propagation tube! That's so cool! I've been using a tall shot glass 😂 I take baby cuttings from pruning just for fun.
Oh no! You said The M Word!
I have disowned the term "Minimalist". I'm Intentional with items, not necessarily Minimal. I dislike visual clutter, but that doesn't mean I can't own items. That just means I don't have knick knacks and my other items are stored behind closed opaque storage.
I am finally learning how to have extra items in the pantry, I've run into instances lately where I only planned meals for the week, got only ingredients for the week, and ended up not making it to the store the next Sunday as planned (life has been picking up, I'm happy for it!). What is important for me is stocking up only on items that I use regularly, just like when the Plague started a few years ago. I don't want that can of yams from 3 Thanksgivings ago, you know? 😅

Having worked in schools for years, I must say that often we need to be taught by people with greater understanding than we have to learn a new skill. Organizing is a skill and can take many years to learn the best way to organize for how we live, for our space, and in a way that brings us joy! Thank you for sharing these great tips to help us in our learning journey! We need to remember to be patient with ourselves because we are worth it!🙏🏻💗

I wish that I could just start over! I am at my wits end to get my house into a home. I know my clutter is due to childhood trauma and need to let it go. I need help, I need hope!! I’ve tried so many techniques. Just haven’t found one that fits my life, my mental state, and emotions of the moment.

I feel the same way. I think, intellectually, we know what needs to be done. We (sort of) know what we want, but achieving that is so hard.
I get excited because I think oooh! this is how I will do it. I redo things and then it only lasts for awhile.
The childhood trauma is hard to deal with. Moving past is hard.

    • @leighcain7258
      @leighcain7258 2 года назад

If you have trauma of some kind, then yes get a therapist. Shop around until you find someone you can work with. However it isn't necessary that you like them it's more important that they know what they are doing professionally, and that they behave professionally with you.
Getting to grips with stuff can be really difficult. Watch some of Dana K White's videos (especially the earlier ones). She has a system that takes the 'emotion' out of decluttering. This doesn't make it easy but it does make it doable. She has also written two or three books which are also very good.

I consider myself a minimalist and I love this video. It's the first of yours I've ever seen and I just subscribed. I enjoy watching minimalism videos and organizing videos but it is easy to lose sight of my own individuality when so many influencers have the same message. Thank you so much for this video, reminding me to be kind to myself, value my own uniqueness, and more importantly, to be kind to others. I love the idea that stuff itself isn't bad--it's the relationship you have with the stuff that can be toxic. So true. And so nonjudgemental! It's a great way to frame whether to keep or discard an item: "What is my relationship with this item?" Oh, and I LOVE your dog!!!!!!!

Clover knows! Be Clover! Lots of good alternative ideas. I've gotten to the point where I have all the toys to play, but not much desire to do it anymore. I'm not sure when that switch flipped, but I don't like it. I don't feel like me anymore when I look back on my previous 60 years. Growing pains? Late midlife crisis? I'm not sure. But maybe some of the stuff I no longer want going to someone else that can find usefulness or joy in it will be good for us both. Thanks for refreshing and kind ideas.

Decision fatigue is the WORST. I minimized my wardrobe so much with that in mind, now I don't have anymore than 12 hangers, each with a top and bottom. This includes 2 sets of pjs and clothes I only wear around the house. Luckily I work from home for myself so I don't need a lot of options now. Now I only have clothes I want to wear and in pairs that are ready to wear!

This is such a lovely and informative video! I would love to know your approach for couples dealing with clutter. Your advice to live for the person who are now is fantastic and I want to strive for that. Though I am very much a sentimentalist and grow very attached to items. However, my husband is worse than me when it comes to attachment. We're both nerds and collectors, but I try to keep my collections small or buy what I call "Subtle Nerd". Items that can pass for day-to-day use, but with hidden nerd undertones. Yet my husband wants his nerd-core blasted everywhere. We have a spare room that he's going to turn into a nerd room, but I don't think everything will fit and he's very hesitant to get rid of anything. I would looooove to see a video with advice for blending styles!

I think the moral factor comes in when you have people living together who have very different sensitivity to disorder. The more orderly ones can be quite disturbed and overwhelmed by lots of visual clutter. They are also usually more easily disgusted by dirty things. Therefore more motivated to clean and organize. The orderly ones can get quite upset by those that take little or no initiative to contribute to cleanliness. Especially if they just act like it’s the orderly persons job. Resentment and arguing is common as the reciprocal nature of healthy relating has broken down.
Both types have to learn to compromise for peace. If they are not then that demonstrates a lack of concern for each other’s well being which is definitely an moral issue.

We used to host foster children and when they were mean to themselves we had them go to the mirror and apologize to themselves.
I would tell them nobody talks to my sweet girl like that, so go apologize and say sweet words to yourself (very loudly) in the mirror.
This was very helpful because their internal dialogue was always very self loathing, and I wanted them to be kind to themselves.

Oh my goodness I get such a lot of backlash and judgement every time I dare to say that I don’t love keeping books. Like I’m somehow a bad person because I don’t like to have lots of books. To clarify; I love reading. I love the characters, the stories, the places books take me, the way they make me feel. But I don’t have any real emotional connection to the paper it’s printed on. And I understand WHY some people love books, but there’s this misconception that not loving books = being ignorant, incurious or uneducated. I think sometimes it comes down to identity. Can you be worldly, interesting and literate without holding onto a large collection of books? 🤷🏼‍♀️

I am renting a house with NO CLOSETS!!! And only 5 ft cabinet up and down surrounding the sink. in kitchenand my stove and refrigerator.
I feel like a slob because I see everything I own.
What to do ???? I have shelves everywhere and I see everything .
No pictures, no decor just stuff. I am renting. My next place would have to be.made of CLOSETS.
Can you make a video to help Solve my Visual clutter.

Just found your channel and am loving your videos! :) even though this has nothing to do with what you talk about on your channel, will you tell me what hair products do you use? Your hair is gorgeous!

Welcome! I’m so happy you’re enjoying the content! I use Qhemet Biologics and Kinky Curly Curling Custard mostly…and I spend a lot of time not touching it lol
