South Park is a Wisecrack favorite, and with the success of the serialized narratives of seasons 18 and 19, Season 20 was set up to be the best, and most relevant, season yet. But, it turned out to be.... less than that. Find out what went wrong on this Wisecrack Edition of South Park season 20!

The main problem was that the 2016 election was just too batshit crazy to parody
Doctor4077 that's why they should've never parodied it they should of done other stuff
not really. its just that Libtard millennials and aging hippie douchbag baby boomers all believe that America is just two thin strips of land along the East and West coasts, and there is just a big empty uninhabited void of nothingness in the center. they have nothing but contempt and disdain for working class conservative America that makes up the majority of voters.
nunya baznus lmfao, I can taste your salt from here.
BoySamusMetroid and he has trump in the office. I still dont know why trump supporters are so salty.
nunya banzus people like you are why its so insane
I didn't realise it had gone wrong ... or that that was where Colorado was.
This is a question that should be posed ten seasons ago.
South Park is kinda like Family Guy in this respect; the first two or three seasons were awesome, but then the show started changing, and before we were even half a dozen seasons in, the show had lost its particular charm.
Which isn't to say that there aren't any good episodes beyond, say, season five or six, but they became fewer and further in between, and by the time South Park's season reached double digits, it wasn't the same show anymore. Pretty much the same can be said about Family Guy [American Dad jumped the shark waaay sooner, thanks largely to poor character development choices involving Roger].
Now, Bob's Burger's? Totally different story. There's we've got a show that has remained consistently funny and appealing, largely because it's character-driven rather than plot-driven.
I think South Park was at its funniest in the middle seasons, actually
The season that officially jumped the shark!!!
Why did garrisons win have to be a “And then” it could easily be “garrison told everyone he wasn’t fit for office but people voted for him anyways”
In a free country, you can never be sure who's going to win a presidential election.
I have to admit...I found the ridiculousness of the memberberries gangster story hilarious.
I thought it was one of the best seasons.
Stormtroopers already excisted in ww 1 germany member :D?
Remember when every episode was unique? Now a whole season is just about one topic and each episode is just slowly building the plot. It's one episode broken down to a whole fucking season. Gawwww
Honestly this Is my favorite seasion or how you Spell it
Excellent insight. Earned that like.
Hey season 20 does fit into the basic South Park narrative: South Park thought Hillary would win THEREFORE they planned out their episodes in a careful manner according to this BUT Trump won and THEREFORE they had to change their episode timeline BUT it turned out all rushed and bad.
am I the only one who disliked the last 3 seasons? the jokes were hilarious at first, but throughout the arcs, they just keep running them into the ground. Randy being Lorde was hilarious the first time, but eventually it just got old.
not enough writing. show changed formats had to keep up with the rapid changes in our society
in my opinion it went wrong in season 19, not the classics weren't obviously the best, but season 19 is where it started to go too downhill. (In my opinion)
The absurdity of reality destroyed the logical arc of South Park. That is sort of great in a way.
No ones gonna ask why tf Jon became a scientologist, after the lottery?😂😂
I think, they should have just rolled with what they did, but change the ending, in order to have Clinton removed from the office and make next season correctly
Eh, Season 16 was way better than 18 or 19 in my opinion. Good video, though.
Yes, IK i'm being captain hindsight here, BUT I gotta ask, why couldn't they have just written a different plotline from the start about if trump won so they wouldn't have had to throw a bunch of shit together
Was season 20 perfect? Hell no. However I kinda liked it. Although, Matt and Trey should've just stayed neutral throughout the whole election. If they stayed neutral and continued with Hilary as President in the show's reality it would've been above and beyond better than what we got.
No, no no... having a whole series narrative sucks. SP has always been about the weekly adventure or maybe a 3 parter nothing more.
I'm so glad they're ending this way of making episodes. It's no coincidence that Seasons 18-20 are my least favorite, especially season 19. I can't wait for them to go back to the classic style.
I think analysis of the show kind of defeats the point of the show.
Southpark has always been nuts in a good way!
They could have done the second half as...
But his speech is the thing that made the people vote for him.
Therefore, he has to try and make the correct decision for the country.
But, he finds the trolls and has to stop them.
Also there was no Kenny
What's the music playing in the beginning called?
I can do a really good member berries which comes up very randomly but is hilarious, mostly to me.
Am I the only one that didn’t think Season 20 was that bad?
It is one of my fav. seasons.
People are crazy, it was amazing.. I think Americans are just embarrassed.
Lethal Outdoors there wasn’t any clever trump jokes in this season only making trump look like a jackass the whole time and that gag got old real fast
@@lorddeath6300 yeh i feel that actually
How can that happen though Lord Death? Trump is the joke so it’s like a satirical paradox lol
What annoyed me the most was that in the episode, "Canada on Strike", they showed that the Danish looked like the Canadians, because they were, "The Canadians of Europe," but they completely abandoned that in season 20.
Luco back when that episode was made noone cared about denmark while during season 20, denmark was pretty popular due to the fact that they are voted the happiest country in the world few years in a row
I've never noticed that and now I'm triggered
But wouldnt it make sense that they dont look like that. BECAUSE the danish actually ended up being american?
South park doesn't have serialized storylines in the older seasons, that started in season 18
Or really continuity in most of the episodes
I guess an important lesson is:
When there is an event that is going to split into two (like 2016 elections), have an alternative script ready.
Yeah. Only having one script (like they did for the 2008 election) doesn't always work out.
Oh, so, in other words, have a backup plan.
No the important lesson is that heidi is smart and funny
@@N451F she really is
And that's why you don't based a whole season on unpredictable shit like a FUCKING ELECTION 😐😒
To be fair, it worked for the Obama episodes. It's hard to blame Matt and Trey when their attempt to serialize a season that banked on Hillary's election happened during the election cycle where traditional election thinking and predictions went waaaaaaaaaay out the window.
DENILSON THOMAS. Though typically the predictions are at least mostly correct
DENILSON THOMAS. But cmon..... Who could predict that? Trumpsters only hoped
It worked then because if mccain won the overall story would have been the same just mirrored.
Bet against the god emperor, you pay the price.
It wasn't as good as season 19, but I still liked it for the most part. However after watching this video I see the problems with it.
Josh Jacobs yeah, exactly. I will keep watching South Park, but I hadn't noticed these flaws before.
Dan Lodz yeah, exactly. I will agree with you that you agree with Josh Jacob's already redundant post, but I won't hold back on adding the third one in a row.
@Thulyblu I agree with your agreement with Dan's agreement with Josh's agreement with Dan.
Wisecrack is good at that, lol
It was good...until the election. In the first episodes I was saying that this season would be the best so far. Unfortunatly It was the only bad one
Yea, I always thought the season 20 was off for some reasons. Thanks for the enlightening video. Keep up the good work!
Alan Z thanks
They should’ve just wrote an episode for both possibilities
Smooth Criminal
... They got cocky... Just like everybody else.
NOBODY planned for both possibilities
They should have but considering that the election results is a one day event there is no way they could have made a strong narrative that could go both ways since the great shift would be far too late into the story so the lead up would have to be very ambiguous so as to go both ways
well, nobody seriously expected the orange moron to win....
They didn't take him seriously. No one did. Except the decently intelligent people that understood this.
What Went Wrong? Oh I member!
666melodeath666 member when season 20 was starting good?
Member when a thousand pundits said "Trump will not win" full stop? Member when the left was pro-wikileaks? Member when the left was anti-war? Member when the right was anti-free speech? Member when liberals weren't called nazis by the mainstream left?
Beery oh yeh!i member
666melodeath666 I personally prefer South Park during the episodic days
My question, why didn't they just stick to the Hillary won storyline? Yeah she didn't win, but if they had finished that arch it woulda been more coherent, creative, and above all unique. I haven't seen any shows create an alternate reality where Clinton won
Ok season 19 was perfect because it combined random adventures with an overarching story
Ironically season 19 felt more like the 20 year anniversary celebration of the series. A season that reminds us why we loved the show for all these years and that the show still has a lot of craziness in store.
Darth Faker season 19 was not good my god just a bunch of random shit Happening
Random? Far from it. Season 18 wasn't random either but it managed to hide its theme quite well while 19 bludgeoned it over your head, painfully blunt even by South Park standards. The season 18 adventures were much more varied overall too, more characters and locations in particular. I honestly think that a few years from now season 18 will overall be thought as better. Season 19 still had its great beats though and PC Principal filled a void that has existed since Isaac Hayes left the show.
Darth Faker i agree 19 was the best season i mean come on pc principal all that. I loved it. Hated this one
Was kinda rushed and to preachy for my taste.
Major lesson from this is don't base entire Season off of shit that is SUPER unpredictable like an election and then having to resort to just blowing up the whole season finally
igor caique They should have made two different outcomes just in case it was foolish not to
@igor caique They take a week to make an episode.
Their standard is so high that even this shit was hilarious lol
True
So in short Donald Trump has broken Trey Parker and Matt Stone. WOW this has been one crazy election! 😏
I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!! 😄
Limelight Raver it was a fucking stupid election is what it was...
Light Yagami But there is a reason why he won.
Hunter Gman because the electoral college is a rigged voting system...
No. Not at all. The electoral college is one method to prevent mob rule.
I'll ask you this, which force is behaving like a mob?
Hunter Gman the conservatives. The electoral college makes the United States more of a central republic like France than a democracy like the vast majority of Europe.
'Member when South Park had a separate story for each episode instead of continuous follow-ups? I 'member!
does anyone member when people didn't think that shows and movies need to be same without changes? oh yeah, i don't... it seems that all shows always had the obligation to fulfill their audiences wishes... and don't let god hear the news that you are trying to do something different than the last 20 years... jesus, people these days will suffocate on their high horses
Member when South Park was mindless potty humor? I member
Member when everyone just enjoyed the show instead of arguing the hidden context to fit their political narrative.
I actually like the continuity between episodes.
South park went from slap stick comedy to a cartoon show with a weird stupid story that is completely not needed or wanted.
I think season 20 was a good way to show how the famous quick writing and up to date style of south park isn't entirely flawless. It proves that even a show with ingenious writing like south park can stumble on a loose wire every now and then. But it is still sad how this was their 20th season.
I really liked Cartman and Heidi so I thought this season was pretty good
heidi is very smart and funny
Me too, I just finished that season, but seems like by the end of the season cartman started to become an asshole again. I kinda enjoyed good guy cartman, but I also found asshole cartman pretty hilarious so I don't know if I'm happy or sad because of that XD
Sooooo, donald trump ruined southpark season 20 lol (thats the ultimate troll)
no Hillary did she threw away an easy presidential election
I'd say the democrats threw away an easy presidential election by nominating the turdiest of turd sandwiches as their nominee. That is where it all went wrong. They were so stoked to get a woman in office that it blinded them. Hillary Clinton is the only person I can think of that would be worse than Trump. Literally anyone else would make a better president than Trump. Just not her. lol
the I agree bernie 4 life
Jason Akers
I agree.
Xx xX
Eh, I wasn't too big on Bernie since he admitted to being socialist.
The biggest problem for me is that it didn't really go anywhere. I think that was the point but... still.
It was suppose to go somewhere, but they were so sure Hillary would win and banked their whole season on that. The saying "Don't put all your eggs in one basket" comes to mind.
+Sir Blank Face
Thank you Captain.
I honestly thought the season didn't turn out that bad. The storyline they presented wasn't THAT random, it was still connected but not as well as it usually is... and huge plotlines like memberberries suddenly ending ... but otherwise I really enjoyed it ^^
to be fair, it was hard to believe at the time that america was stupid enough to elect donald trump.
richanater99 they underestimated how shit Hillary was
Well that's the thing, it was going somewhere, it's just that even the creators of South Park thought that Trump getting elected was too ridiculous to be believable.
I didn't know I wanted this, but I'd love a Wisecrack Edition on the ethics of Shawn Spencer lying about being a psychic detective in Psych.
The Kirby T YES I DIDNT KNOW OTHER PEOPLE WATCHED THAT SHOW.
The Kirby T Such an underrated show.
YES!!! did you know they're doing a movie?
Ethan Rummel WAIT ARE THEY REALLY??
The Kirby T I love that show!!!!
So basically Trump ruined South Park and its serialisation method? Man I loved that each episode was contributing to a larger plot
Emmanuel Bukoye good for you.
Emmanuel Bukoye yeah but they'd have to predict the future to stay as hyper relevant as we've come to expect.
trump: you will respect my authoritai!
i never liked the plot following in south park...kinda gets boring.
I originally welcomed the change, but there were a lot of things I disliked about the seasons with ongoing narratives, I started missing the episodes where the focus was on the main four boys, and the average episode ended up being pretty boring and with little to no re-watch value.
Member when South Park episodes were stand alone? Member when a simili "Terminator épisode" could lead to Barbara Kaiju destroying everything? Member when Kenny died?
I member.
Ooh, member Trapper Keeper?
Terry Gollow i know what happened they took their jobs!!!
They killed the "THEY KILLED KENNY" joke! Those bastards!
member Mr Hankey, he was so funny. I member...
They should have planned for both outcomes. It was a foolish bet, and they don't get a pass for it.
To be fair, EVERYONE, including Giant Douche supporters, thought Turd Sandwich would win.
they did the same think with obama and they were right, cant blame them for their confidence in their assumption and their confidence in their story telling. I thought the season was great
Yeah people just think it's clear cut but obviously it's not. I guess some people just find it surprising that other people have different views than them selves. it's sad that some people can't understand that...
Andrew GTB They just followed the Vegas odds and that did them well for the 4 elections since the show began.
What went wrong was that the writers were arrogant, not foolish, and didn't consider both outcomes. They threw away their writing rule because they didn't think their narrative was wrong. Maybe they can turn this around and make Season 21 a series point out their own hypocrisy.
I personally hated season 20 because most of it was about the election. I was over the election early 2016 and I didn't want to hear any more about it. I knew South Park would joke about it, but I didn't expect the whole season to ride on it. I don't find political jokes funny and that's because politics is one big, sad joke. Especially the "war" between Republicans and Democrats. They both lie and they both suck.
Yep. They both think their shit doesn't stink too. Self righteous assholes.
Trump is the best
Dark Young Link the whole season didn’t ride on it, it rode on feminism and trolling.
Dark Young Link no no no. My opponent is a liar
Kenny AAM and cannot be trusted.
This is PROOF of just how talented the Southpark writers ARE‼️ The storyline can go to crap, but each episode is still hilarious‼️😆
This entire video could have been summed up in two words "Trump won."
yeah you dipshit, you can sum up everything, its called a "headline".
"saving private ryan" couldve been summed up to "dday was bad"
stupid
To be fair... the evil ''danish'' guys last name is *danish for imposter* , sooo..
Yeah ruined the surprise for me
To be Fairrrrrrr...
where the hell is the second part of The Philosophy of Christopher Nolan.
Yeah, what happened to Nolan? I bet it's coming soon. These guys must plan stuff way in advance
yeah tf
I just started rewatching all 20 seasons of South Park. Loving every second of it
They should have just stuck to their guns and had Hillary win
That would have been so hilarious, lol! It would have killed any satire they could potentially get from Trump, but at least then we would have gotten a solid end to the season. It would be weird to see all the Trump supporters freak out and get pissed over the show denying their bullshit victory, though.
dracocrusher Bullshit victory? They won fair and square.
Unidentified Anonymous
He still upset about the results unfortunately
Unidentified Anonymous Lefties are deranged from reality
+Unidentified Anonymous Well technically no, he didn't win, he lost by quite a lot of vote. If this was a normal country that is, but rules are really shit in USA...rather undemocratic considering the USA likes to pride itself as a champion of democracy lol...
Whenever I first watched the episode after the election, I could tell that it was not the episode we were suppose to see. It was pretty obvious. I told my friends I was watching with that I wanted to see the real Season 20 that they had mapped out months in advance. I wish Trey and Matt would do like a Season 20.5. In this they would get the scripts for if Hillary won and make it. They could release it on Blu-Ray and call it South Park Alternate Timeline Season 20: The Lost Episodes!
Mitchell allen That's a great idea!
I feel like, if we're ever going to get it, it'll be in The Fractured But Whole.
I'd love that. We'd get to see the "real reality". Because we're all obviously in the "alternate reality".
Yea, they hinged WAY too much on Hillary winning.
Shit I'd buy that.
South Park makes their episode like a week in advance of airing date to stay up to date with current stuff to make fun of. There probably wouldn't be much unaired material
Here's the story from 1:41 told again but this time let's replace the "and thens" with "therefores" and "buts"
John the stick figure adopts a dog in order to deal with the recent loss of his wife, but the dog isn't able to get him out of his grief; therefore he plays the lottery hoping that money will restore meaning to his life, but even after winning he doesn't feel happy; therefore in a desperate bid to feel whole again he joins Scientology.
There. A nice narrative that follows through and doesn't use "and then."
You don't play the lotto hoping money restores meaning you play to possibly win money, it's not a guarantee so you can't base life decisions on it. Maybe if you had said he gambled to try and add meaning to his life.
UnderBeyond that's bs. Most people ONLY join a religion when they're depressed or their life is shit. That's why you hear, "I was at the bottom and thought nobody loved me but then I found an imaginary friend (Jesus). Nobody makes up friends or joins cults when they're happy and their life is on track
pokemonmanic3595 you can't literally replace all the "therefores" and "buts" with "and thens" and nothing changes. Just thd way you say it
Wow...
All the critiques on this fake story is awesome.
Lol that story is shit.
Eric cartman was good. That's my problem
Lol yes
At lease your show it better, respect bro
Not really he was just being manipulative as usual
Do bojacks new season
Boi Boi I'd be more interested with a season 4 and 5 video next year, after we get to see how things turn out from this season
They put too much emphasis on something that would ultimately be out of their control. It was a risk that blew up in their faces
insert laughing simpson , it's perfect hahaha
This comment section will go *badly*.
It already did, surprising amount of yelling over the very clearly simple fact that two writers gambled their season on a fact outside their control, which more than showing anything about the 2016 election proved some of the risks modern cartoon writting styles have with the whole plan the whole season before starting it.
Yeah, I kinda figured that the election was the problem with this season. I wonder what the story was gonna be if turd sandwich won.
Make South Park Great Again
I don't think even the God Emperor himself can do this.
Or just give up on south park and watch better stuffs like Rick and morty and bojack horseman.
South park is still better than rick&morty
sure...and nostalgia is bad....
just because one season was a little of doesn't mean the show is all of a sudden shit.
So Trump ruined South Park?
WildfireSP also the people who voted for him, and Stone and Parker's lack of a plan B.
Hillary being a shity candidate ruin South Park.
WildfireSP - Fake news did.
It was more Matt and Trey's own poor planning that did season 20 in. That and falling for fake news.
No the writers ruined south park trying to base it on things they had no ability to guess.
Me enjoying the recent seasons: hol’ up
ikr
Same Omf
you can still enjoy it!
@@cy-bernet-ix of course
In my opinion, the entire self-enclosed episodic format South Park used to have, was what made it so rewatchable. Whenever I had dinner, I could put on a random episode and not feel like I was missing something; I got the full experience from just that one episode (save for the very rare two-parters). I really wish they would go back to this.
I'm pretty happy if they end the serialized structure of the seasons. Old South Park with one topic for each episode (or sometimes 2 or 3) was way funnier. because out of 1000 jokes about one specific topic, they could pick the best ones they came up with and put them into one episode. Now they distribute all of the jokes among the episodes which make them lame and repetitive.
Yeah. Those two REALLY dropped the ball. If you have to base your plotline on a real life outcome, and said outcome can only go one of two ways, then you should have a plan for BOTH DAMNED OUTCOMES!
woah, just take it easy man
Chill?
@DéJi Vu Your not totally wrong, however it doesn't change the fact that they should have had a back up plan for Trump winning.
@DéJi Vu Even so, they could have had something. After the election they had nothing.
There are pros and cons to serialization. But in the case of South Park serialization is not so great. South Park is a social commentary. Although you can serialize social commentary, it ends up being really hard when you start covering current events, well... Because you can never know what happens next. Even though serialization allows for the buildup of great jokes, this very thing that makes the jokes so great can ruin any future episodes as the build-up may not fit the rest of the narrative. Rick and Morty shows us that there is a way better alternative. A small overarching narrative (the divorce), with a different theme every episode. The reason that I compare these two is that they were surprisingly similar in the beginning. in the first season of south park, Kenny dies CONSTANTLY. In Rick and Morty they even leave an entire universe behind because Rick turned everyone into cronenbergs. Both had a disdain for dealing with consequence and changing characters. I wish south park would go back to the old version simply because it would now no longer limit the now more experienced Trey Parker and Matt Stone, but I would still want some form of continuation.
Jeroen de Vries South Park uses social commentary sometimes, but is at its heart an absurdist work. Haven't you noticed that ever since the shift to weekly production, the boys stopped learning something every episode? The nuanced political and social messages you'd see once, maybe twice a season aren't what drove the show, it was the absurdist takes on trends and pop culture, portraying things in the most ridiculous light possible. And no I don't think ripping on celebrities and making the newest fad look ridiculous is real social commentary, so let's stop acting like social commentary is all South Park is
Simpsons: Could predict Trump's presidency over a decade before he was elected.
South Park: Couldn't predict Trump's presidency a week before he was elected.
That's why The Simpsons will forever rule the land of TV!
simpsons did it simpsons did it
Simpson’s hasn’t been funny in 20 years.
@@KIRAMH1023 simpsons became unfunny in irrelevant fifteen years ago
You are an idiot, he ran in the year 2000. They didn't predict shit, they just made a joke that as relevant at the time.
just like everyone said, this is their own mistake for having binged too much on their prediction of the outcome, rather than the outcome itself as it was. This is kind of an amateur mistake too, isn't it? when writing social commentary pieces.
but either way, this was pretty educational too.. I never knew about that lecture they gave students.
To be honest, I thought season 20 was fantastic. The show is and has always been a parody of what’s going on in the world and being a super disjointed mess of wtf, this is insane what’s even happening was pretty much the best way to parody the world.
“Everything is fucked, but we’re gonna try and keep going like we were before with some minor changes. Oh wait that isn’t gonna work, we’re fucked and we need to reset.
Yeah, I agree. I found the season alright, enjoyed it, but found the plot way too... well, much. One thing that I liked though, is despite its confused ending, season 20 really captured the entire year that was 2016
Thank you. Agreed. They always do a great job.
The problem is that the writers didn't write two different story lines... one for if Hillary won, and one for if Trump won. They just soaked up the media and ASSUMED Hillary would win. Therefore, they had to improvise and create crap lol
I remember genuinely enjoying this season, granted less so then others, but even mediocre south Park still shits all over most modern tv
They tried to get too political. That's what I think went wrong. First few episodes were alright but then... Yeeeeeeah...
Dylen Wasn't that their job
Your absolutely right they should have kept their funny recipe.
Funny thing, memberberries was always my least favourite season. I always felt it was not the SP I loved. Anything after or before is still top for me, but the season with the berries was shit to me. Now I see a critical point of view about it, and I feel not alone haha.
I loved the member berries... hit the nail right on the head... and loved the trolling they did. However, I do see how the story telling did not have a seamless transition...it was still funny anyways imo.
Random events that build without logic? Sounds like the current political climate.
Over complicating it by trying to link the story line over a whole series. I much preferred individual stories for each episode. Doesn’t always have to be political.
Fuck I'm so happy Hillary didn't win lol
Do Christopher Nolan part 2
I know this was a video pointing out the season's flaws, but honestly, it gave me a greater appreciation for it. It showed that Matt and Trey have the ability to perform a complete 180 of the script on the fly and still make something decently funny. Only people as talented as them could have pulled it off.
Upon clicking on this video, I was accosted by an advertisement for the Fractured but Whole game itself. This small bit of coincidence gave me a momentary feeling of mirth. One that I shall soon move on from.
I loved this season.. I wish there was more member berries though they were my favorite
I love South Park for this real time improv. It assures me they still care for their fans and continues to grow a great impression and reputation amongst this viewer. Me.
I think the season broke down already before the election. The election was only what made it obvious.
The issue is that Southpark played coughtup with trump all along. When the season started they was handling trump like he was acting back in before the primary election. When people was not sure if trump was running for "real" or not. This was of cause Trumps plan to get maximum media coverage.
South Park writers didn´t understand why Trump was popular, so they totally missed the point with garrison.
There is also other problems. The whole first half of the season was built on the assumption that Hillary would win.
It seams like the base line of the season was written before the Republican national convent. While Trump won a massive victory in the primary election (a lot of people don´t understand this. But Sanders punctually god 40% and Crutz only got 19. Trump got 263% more than the runner up, Hillary got 51% more than the runner up... YEA, the diffrance was THAT large. You would never know if you listening to the media.
Anyway... Trump approval rating nation wide was not really that high before the convent, it was quite a bit lower than Clinton. This was partly due to media still calming that he would not win the nomination, and party due to Trump had not yet starting campaigning for president yet.
After the convent Trump popularly more than doubled and got way higher popularty than Clinton. This was at the time claimed as a fluke and that Clinton would get way more after the democratic convent. And she did.... But not to the level as before, and Trump didn´t fall back any significant part.... Depending on what poll you look at it did still look likely that Clinton would win, but it was far from certain.
Here come South park in. They probobly made the main arc for the season in the spring. Then they saw trump rising in popularity during the convent, but Clinton rasiing just a bit over Trump after democrats.
Here Season 20 starts... So South park is still quite sure that Hillary would win... So they relaxed in it... and just start airing it.
And i thought it was quite obvious pretty much from the very fist episodes that that was what they was thinking.
While most of the arc about Garrisson getting popular was quite good, there was quite a few cues to that he would never win already in the first episode.
Trump was closing the gap pretty much every day from democrats convention to about the time than the first South Park episodes was aired.
There was quite a few scandals on Clinton's side, pling up. But what really pushed it was Clinton's 911 memorial colas. It did take a few days for it to hit social media (and MSM only aired it as a claim of a conspiracy theory). This hit the polles at the 15 of September. Now Trump was a head of Clinton again. Trump did fall back, but he got a head in 26 of September again (not is very different what poll one are looking at, but generally.
Now South Parked panicked.
1: They must explain why Garrisson is rising in the polls
2: They must make it possible for Garrisson to win the election
And here the narrative really broke down. So he rose in popularity because he claimed that he didn´t want to be president... he claim that he didn´t want to be president because he roes in popularity.... This makes no sesse what so ever.
The real reason why Garrisson rose in popularity is because Trump did, this don´t make South Park self contained, and pretty much breaking the concept of it.
This was to me lazy but also panicked writing... Still it was a response to a situation that they couldn´t for see... but SHOULD have calculated.
The 3:d and biggest mistake was the least obvious one. After pussy gate they just fell back to the original threed. This was a BIG misstake. They even capitlized on pussygate. They been taken of guard 3 times already (President convention, 911 and late September).
The thing about pussy gate is that stuff like that change how people answer polls, but it dont really change the way people vote (well at least to a much smaller degree). There is ways to double check this by complicated math and polling....and, unknown to most people, Trump team did this.
Anyway, by this point South Park team sems to totally forget the previews lessons and just push to the original narrative. Also there was a break between episode 6 and 7 giving them no time for recovery what so ever (i would say, even if they did have the time, they would probobly not take it.)
When i sat down on the 9:th starting up the 7:th episode i told my wife "This episode will suck".
To me.. really most of the season sucked, because they don´t seams to understand Internet culture or the president race of 2016. While they obviusly understand mainstreem internet users, they clearly don´t understand underground internet culture. What they are doing is taking the extreem stawman. yeayea.. its for comical effect, but it really don´t work. And it tells us that they don´t know how the culture is.
Sorry.. South Park is stuck at the pre internet 90-tys.
Having just discovered this channel, (and subbed) i didn't know that it did "What Went Wrong" videos. i *literally thought* that this was about HRC'S book. 😂😂
i *also thought* that this was a new video! 😮 If season 20 aired last fall, *did "South Park" turn 21??* Did it just beat "Gunsmoke", "Law & Order", & "L&O:SVU" for the *longest-running fictional tv show???* 😃 Oh, i'm DEFINITELY tuning in tonight! ~💞
You're forgetting about the Simpsons, they are launching season 30
meh, i liked season 20, not the best one of course, but I don't think it was wrong
20 wasn't a Bad season at all it had some hilarious episodes and a couple that have made me laugh harder then any other episode in a few years. Obviously the season before it was better but the season a few seasons before that was better the 19. I think it just has ups and downs like anything else
I liked 20 too. I thought the Donald Garrison arc was just a new horrible insufferable character we'd have to deal with from now on like PC Principal. I think I gave a lot of leeway for Garrison winning because I thought they intended to have him win no matter who won the real election. Because having a permanent Trump character in the show who was already kinda like that anyway was bound to cause entertaining drama. And ultimately I cared a lot less about the president arc than I did about the trolltrace arc. Selling out the trolls to Denmark just seemed like something Hillary would do, and its not as if you sympathized with them. Also, I LOVED the mid battle philosophical debate over the moral high ground of trolling to make yourself feel good vs trolling to expose humanity's shittiness.
I just hate how South Park stopped being about Stan, Kyle, Cartman, and Kenny. The first 8 seasons were so great because it was about them. Then from seasons 9 - 18 it was still pretty good, but it was less about them. And in season 19 on, it's more about the kid's parents than them. It's far less interesting now.
I think the whole plot suffered more from the creators imposing Mr. Garrison as Trump. (I could just imagine the hilarious ventures between him and PC Principle)
They also should have curved the season in a direction where instead of focusing on the election itself but to the arising change and control that politics has taken on citizens. I think they tried but it didn't reflect well as they jumped the gun on who they thought would win the presidency and went for that narrative instead.
Good point: they could have had Garrison and a Hilary-parody going for election to the state school board, to parallel the US election without being tied to national events and scale.
I agree.
Granted, I missed the last two episodes. That being said, I am shocked at how polarizing this seems to be in the comments. I LOVED all of it, hilarious, creative, entertaining and very thought-provoking. Brilliant actually
Also, the memberberries weren't exactly indestructible. That one guy in Randy's addiction meeting previously squished some of them in his pocket.
So basically Lord trump is only one who troll the south park, prise the kek
Right. He's the true Mega Troll!
Am I the only one that likes season 20
21 is sucky too.
I thought they handled the election really well.
There were some good ideas and funny moments (Trump as Vader, Skankhunt :-D) but the episodes were quite uneven. The whole member berries plotline was incredibly boring and like out of another world.
I think the Member berry plot point gets carried over into the video game okay. I actually like the direction they were going with it, but no payoff to it.
I fucking hated season 20. 21 is back to its hilarious self though.
They expected trump to lose so they had to rewrite everything. And they usually wait till the last minute to write an episode so they were fucked lol
I liked this season even though most people don't
I really hate dthe whole hydeXcartman ship throughout the whole process, and I was also super disappointed at the unstatisfying climax of the member berry story.
but beyond that I thought s20 was ok, It was still better than season 22
Bro, this season was fucking hilarious. In hindsight it’s even better.
Skankhunt.. the way they followed the election.. butters.. the over dramatic Twitter shit.. I’m confused why people hate it. Y’all take shit too seriously.
Edit: sigh.. the fact so much went over everyone’s heads is sad.
Idk I liked the season 20 quite a bit, brought me back to the good ol' time of trolling
Yeah I loved it
