If Spike had been with Buffy in the first season instead of Angel, he would have taken her, Joyce, and Dawn and drove them in his DeSoto straight out of Sunnydale away from the hellmouth. Spike wouldn't look back at that town, he would have protected all of them too no matter what.

She came back because she knew she had no other choice fate of destiny was written in stone for her
