- Documentary on the making of The Golden Girls.
This part shows how NBC's scheduling change resulted in a dramatic ratings drop for The Golden Girls, and how the series ultimately came to an end with Bea Arthur's departure and a failed spin-off entitled "The Golden Palace.
In my opinion, B Arthur was the only one clear-headed enough to accept that the Golden Girls was over and the only one with enough guts to actually end it and not push it.
Pushing it too far and overplaying have ruined so many great popular shows that it would have been a crime if it happened to the Golden Girls...which is also why I never watched a single episode of the Golden Palace.
Pushing your luck only result in bad sequels, and spoil wonderful shows.
Once something is over, it's over.
Kyra Sedgwick of The Closer did the same thing. It's funny that both that show and Golden Girls were in their 7th seasons when they made the choice and both shows ended up having spin offs that never lived up to the original without Bea and Kyra.

I applaud them for wanting to continue the show as best as they could without Dorothy, but it just wasn't the same. They really needed all 4 of the women to make the show the fantastic hit that it was. I don't think it could have worked without any one of the girls.
Betty has admitted that statement and how she felt at that time. I am sure Betty would agree with your statement today in 2017.
It's a shame the final season didn't reach the same heights of popularity that it previously had, although in my experience, if people really like a show, they'll follow it wherever it moves....

This show is so much more to me than just a great tv show!! I grew up watching it every Saturday night with my grandparents, and when I got married the re runs were a STAPLE to our family!!! My kids grew up watching The Golden Girls, and to this day (they are both grown and married) it’s still ALL of ours favorite!!! Both of my adult children have told me that this show gives them comfort. The characters are like family! My grandparents both died in the hospital, and BOTH had The Golden Girls playing on the hospital television set!! When I was younger I would visit them in Florida (they flew south for the winter) and my grandma would take me to have coffee with her friends at 7am.........I always told them I felt like I was in “The Golden Girls” show!! ❤️❤️

Not only did it not work without Dorothy but also without the original house setting, as well. The hotel kitchen was no substitute for Blanche's kitchen. Also, the show became too crowded. Since it was a hotel, every episode you had a number of guests. I liked how on GG it was often just the 4 girls with a few minor characters here and there.
I’ve always hated when networks moved shows from the normal time slot.
I think it was brilliant the way they wrote Dorothy out w/Leslie Neilson! Great show! ♥️. Bittersweet, though...my mother & I both cried.
I agree that the house where they first lived helped make the show, as we all loved the scenes in the kitchen where they were discussing stuff and eating cheesecake, and basically was just the 4 girls. I think I will buy the box set, I watch them each day, love my girls
I wonder how many cheesecakes they ate while at that table haha ....... great scenes.
I've only seen the last episode once, and I never will again. To me, it never happened.

Well that's a shame because I can remember thinking the show bad. But then I went back and watched it and it doesn't suck at all it's really good.

I actually really liked the golden palace and cried a few times over some of the subject matter they covered. I get sad because sometimes because i think maybe one day theyll continue that GP again but then i remember my girls are gone and only betty white is still alive :(
The Golden Palace just sucked without Bea. Plus taking the girls out of the house and throwing in the two guys just didn't work.
Betty White and Estelle Getty were SUCH beautiful women.

The only episodes on The Golden Palace I watch is when Dorothy visited the girls in the hotel.

The classic line up was actually 8:00 227, 8:30 Amen 9:00 Golden Girls 9:30 Empty Nest and at 10:00 Hunter.
Golden Palace wasn't the same without Bea she was a big part of Golden Girls, and without her on Golden Palace it just lost it's charm.
For me, the the fact is during the 92-93 school year I was still watching Family Matters at 8 p.m. on ABC. I never heard of The Golden Palace until many years later. Looking back CBS did not do enough promotion to let people know that a new show called The Golden Palace would be on their network.

Bea left the show to talk about the show for the rest of her life. I mean she did about 10 specials and interviews talking about her role as Dorothy. For me they never should have sell the house and move to the Golden Palace, for only one season, I mean what did they expected? They should have keep it as it was, so we all could think about 4 old ladies who are still sitting in their kitchen eating cheese cake now.

I agree. I watched The Golden Palace but I just felt like I was always waiting or Dororthy to come in with her witty lines. The dynamic wasn't the same without her. The show worked because they all worked together. I think they all brought something different to the table, but the show just didn't do it for me without her.

Good show of course, but the dictates of 'networks' and viewing statistics, really robbed it of any meaning. Thank goodness it survived, despite the machinations of an ultra-materialistic world. RIP Golden Girls.
The Golden Girls ended its run on NBC on May 9, 1992! The Golden Palace on CBS, albeit the virtual eighth season of The Golden Girls, was clearly a mistake just waiting to go out of business!

I thought the Golden Palace was well written.
Although I enjoyed watching the Golden Palace...I have to admit, with the brilliance of the Golden Girls in my mind, it just didn't work! The show was built on the chemistry of those four actresses and without Bea Arthur, it didn't stand a chance!

It’s a shame that the Golden Palace wasn’t more successful. Even though it wasn’t the Golden Girls, it did still have some good jokes and a certain charm.

They never should have gone on after that 7th season of GG. It was done. And with Bea Arthur gone, it was never going to work. It's a shame the producers went on with it because they tarnished the image of what they had accomplished.

Moving the remaining cast to run a hotel was a mistake. They should have continued the show as it was minus Dorothy.
It still wouldn't have worked because you didn't have Dorothy. She was the anchor. Either way it would've failed.

As a kid I liked the final episode but now I realize what a mistake it was. It ended up betraying the entire premise of the show which was that these four women were each other's family now that their husbands were gone and their kids were grown up with their own families. That was the whole point of the show. Marrying Dorothy off and moving her out of the house was a bad idea. I think the actual series finale that would've been perfect were the two part episodes right before with Rose's heart attack. It even felt like a proper series finale for the show. Oh, well too late now. I just wish the series had a proper series finale that honored the whole premise of the series and the characters.
Never saw Golden Palace. With my favorite character gone, I never bothered to.

The Golden Palace (though it’s good all it’s own, but still not as good as) should’ve been a movie with a better storyline to properly End the Golden Girls saga.
Sorry but "GP" felt tacked on like an after thought following the huge success of "GG". Bea Arthur had the hindsight to quit at the right time. Pity everybody else didn't follow her example.
The lynchpin of "GG" was the chemistry between it's four leading ladies. Remove just one person from that equation and the whole thing falls apart. Why?. Because they are the only ones we want to see. Populating "Palace" with a bunch of uninteresting supporting characters was nothing short of a disaster.
I do not know why someone like you is even commenting on this show? One thing the Golden Girls and the actress on the shows have never been is racist. They have even devoted whole episodes to show how outdated and wrong that style of thinking is. Someone like you doesn't even have the right to watch the Golden Girls so go on to another show and leave our girls out of it.
The Golden Palace was dreadful.
It wasn’t believable and they messed with the characters too much.
So if the show hadn't moved before the 7th season would the ratings have stayed stronger. I might have missed if the show was moved because of the ratings were dropping 🤔
I don't think it was just the time change. The show had new writers since Season 4 or Season 5. It also lost its amazing director at the start of Season 6.

Having some annoying child on there didn't help either. You're suppose to bring on the young child towards the end of a dying series; Brady Bunch, Partridge Family, Different Strokes, Cosby Show, etc...

Golden palace was not the same. Blanche would have never sold her house. They should have either stayed at the house for a couple seasons or ended it completely

The last season felt forced because Bea... lets be real was not a match with Leslie. It was just so damn far fetched. It' felt sort of like Bea took her ball and went home and it's a shame as the others wanted to keep going.
Controversial opinion. I hated the character of Dorothy
