im just waiting for the chinese herbal medicine community to go up in arms over this video since you turned all of the powder and pill medicines into tea 😂
To be fair, a lot of the powder and dry pill medicines are intended to be taken with water anyway. On the occasion, certain recipes can be modified to produce teas or tinctures as needed. So, not the biggest crime in the world or anything. Source: me. I grew up taking traditional medicines for various ailments since young. At least for the non-disease ones.
You should make the Horton Boone's hangover cure from Wolfenstein: The New Colossus: • Tablespoon of ketchup • Orange juice • Half a tin of anchovies • Two raw eggs • Two teaspoons of chili pepper • Chicken stock • Cough syrup • One cup of fine whiskey
And then compare it against the wakeup juice from Back To The Future 3! For, uh, a really valid reason that definitely isn't about watching Alvin torture himself, no, not at all.
True, but I rather like his calm demeanor and deadpan humor. I will say it's the first time I've seen him rattled, but then only barely. He must have an iron stomach though.
An awesome video as always Alvin. However, I would be remiss if I didn't explain one crucial aspect of traditional Chinese tea culture. You're supposed to do multiple steeps of your tea ingredients, and you actually want to throw out the first steep as its often too thin or bitter to be palatable. This is why 'tea pets' and 'tea trays' are sold as part of the experience. You pour out the first steep onto your tea pets as an offering, and the tray beneath them catches the impure tea so there's no mess. So in this case, I think you would have been better served with doing a quick steep first to get the herbs reconstituted and then throw out the first steep before making a second, deeper steep to really extract the best flavor.
It could be fun to create a series where someone plays a game, and every time they want to use a consumable that is food/drink related, they have to take a sip/bite of their own created version of it.
Imagine a situation where you need this to safe a life, but venturing out to procure the ingredients could mean certain death. It must be quite the medicament

I wonder… since the licorice root releases natural sugars, maybe using some modern scaling to account for modern taste and a small amount of the root, the medicine would still taste fine and not too sweet, and release it’s more natural flavors. However I’d suggest rather than brewing all the flavors at once in the same kettle, use multiple vessels for easier combination and mixing to make finding a nice tasting combination while still tasting sweet to the taster’s liking
when i had to eat herbal medicine as a kid my parents would tell me "if it tastes bad that means its working properly". so I guess that means Alvin succeeded!
