This video helped me make my Sunday morning espresso on my new stilosa. The last week I was making bitter sour espresso. This video helped me pull some yummy stuff no sourness thanks!!!!
Back in my days as a barista we would purge the steam wand before wiping it. The hot water from the steam helped to clean the wand. That’s just my two cents and that was years ago.
I just received this machine as a gift and I am having so much fun with it. It’s inexpensive but it’s still a major upgrade from our old Krups machine that lasted us over 20+ years. I just ordered a bottomless portafilter and am excited to give it a try.
Pretty sure it's 51mm. Tom's coffee corner showed upgrades and gave links to upgrades so we don't even have to research. My machine comes in tomorrow. Excited to start tinkering with it.@@Brad_The_Dad
I have a very similar setup. I bought a new bottomless Portafilter. I use the Barazta sette 30 Grinder. Had to play around with the grind setting. Tried 11 at first, and nothing came out of the machine. Then tried 13 and same thing. I finally landed on 15.5 or so and that seemed to work. Still going to mess around with my dosage. Tried 18g and I think I may need to lower to 15-16g.
I just got mine for Christmas. Pick up a naked basket. Though, I have been at 16 grams, runs a little fast. I will try dosing 17 then 18 grams, to see how it tastes. Found fresh roasted coffee works best. Using the WDT tool and tamper but I do not have the other one you used. I like how you did your frothing, I will give that a try. I have been angling it a lot to create the vortex. Great video thanks!
Love it! Thanks for including what size bottomless portafilter you have, because I wasn't sure which one to get. I just got a Delonghi Stilosa off of ebay and I'm so so excited!!
I just bought the same machine! I'm pretty happy with it too. I used to work at a coffee / bubbly tea shop a while back and missed the feeling (but didn't want to spend $200-$700 on a home-esp-machine when I don't drink coffee everyday). Did the rubber spout ever pop off for you though? I read about it popping off for some people while they were steaming milk... and some are recommending to keep it attached with a cable tie --which I did too... Works wonders even though I wish the spout were longer! I even saw a vid of a dude modifying a different model Delonghi wand and switching it out with a Rancilio wand. Stuff was legit! Not sure if Delonghi caught up to that and made changes to their models so no one can modify it though, HA! Anyway, GREAT vid!
Hey! So I just recently purchased the stilosa and love it! I was looking to up my game and got the bottomless portafilter, 51mm. As I read in some comments, people noticed some leaking and spraying if portafilter isnt pulled farther than the original portafilter does, and I had similar issues. I got it to work for the most part when I put this portafilter to around a 4 oclock position as opposed to 6 oclock where it’s supposed to be. However, my shots are not pulling well, they are dark but have so much less creaminess than the original filter has! I was hoping you had some knowledge on this issue? Any advice is amazing!!! Thanks!
When judging this, you need to keep in mind, that the original basket that comes with the machine is pressurized and creates a fake crema. So a non pressurized basket producing less is not necessarily a bad sign.
Just purchased the same setup inspired by your video. Since this was posted a few months ago have you made any changes to your brewing routine? would love to see more videos!
Two things. I recently got this and nothing in the manual, instructions, or any print material with the machine actually says the SIZE of the portafilter! What size is the portafilter? Secondly, I ask, because I would like to order a bottomless portafilter for my machine, however I cannot find one for delonghi anywhere - where di you get this one? Thanks
I have the 3420, my advice to avoid channeling is to not use the distribution tool. After the WDT step, give it a tap on the table and then directly tamp. A 51mm 1.0m puck screen with a spray using an RDT spray will help with water flow distribution, and of course if you don't have one already, an IMS 51mm 26mm length (16/17g dosage) or 32mm length (19/20g dosage) precision basket is really important depending on your bean profile and grinder capabilities. There is also a stainless steel steam wand attachment you can get for the 3420/stilosa that replaces the rubber wand/zip tie method, without the need to manually upgrade to the rancilio steam wand mod that a lot of modders try. Those changes overall will give you very consistent espresso shot pulls and a much sturdier approach to making home latte art drinks!
@@Ashhong1no worries! the distribution only levels the top layer, which compacts the puck unevenly and can lead to channeling ehen the water hits the top layer. It used to be a widely used tool before WDT came about, and those that have tried both, including myself have found the distribution tool to either be of no benefit or to cause slightly inconsistent shot pulling. So the standard puck prep has now suggested just to fluff up the grounds and direct tamp
I had my stilosa for 2 weeks with a normcore bottomless filter. I was pulling perfect shots, then suddenly have spraying. I don't have a nice thick chabnel of espresso it's thin with spraying all over. Have you ever had this issue? I've had my machine for 1 months. This started 2 weeks in.
I'm still assimilating the fact that I now need 18g of coffee for a single cup when that much brewed enough for about 6 cups using a regular coffee maker 🤣 still worth it.
I bought a similar machine but allways wandered how to get that brown chocolate brew. I guess the most important aspect is the 250$ grinder for the (100$ maker)
I know you said it isn’t that easy, but is there anyway you could link some of your tools in this? Portafilter and basket etc? If not I totally understand
Hey! Would you mind if you linked the exact bottomless portafilter you got? I'm nervous about buying one that isn't compatible with the machine. Thank you very much!
Hello, if you don't mind, could you share if you did manage to find a compatible bottomless portafilter for this machine? I've read various reviews online about different models of portafilters leaking water, coming off the grouphead, ears not fitting well etc. Thank you in advance.
I bought this same machine! I love it so much and decided to start a RUclips channel making very nice drinks with it! You did a great review! My videos are coming soon!
What portafilter did you get from Amazon, I just got the Stilosa and I will soon upgrade to the bottomless portafilter and it seems like yours works well for it
I purchased this machine and now I want to upgrade to a Gaggia Classic Pro. Eventually I will get a dual boiler machine, but I want to stick around $500
I got exactly the coffee machine and grinder as yours. Got the grinder yesterday. I am still trying to figure out the setting for the expresso, wondering what setting did you use for the grinder? Thanks.
I have the same expresso machine and use bottomless portafilter. what coffee do you use? also, mine shoots coffee all over. I have researched the issue and was fixed but no crema. I use 14g of coffee. would that be the problem?
What is the number you use when you grind your coffee? I know it differs based on the beans but what would the common one be? I take beans from local coffee shop and ask them to grind it for me
I'm thinking about picking up a DeLonghi Stilosa myself since my budget is pretty low. I will be using Lavazza pre-ground to make my espresso shots. What's the purpose of getting the bottomless portafilter rather than just using the portafilter that comes with the machine? Also, what is the purpose of the distribution tool?
The portafilter that comes with the machine is a pressurized portafilter. This means that your grind quality won’t really matter, and will pretty much make something similar to ‘crema,’ but not quite. The bottomless portafilter isn’t necessary, but it is a regular, unpressurized portafilter, meaning your grind quality will most definitely matter. The bottomless just allows you to see what’s going on during extraction. You can always depressurize the original portafilter, but then you wouldn’t want to use preground.
On my Breville Grinder, it can range anywhere between 18-12! Coffee is tedious, so every new batch of coffee beans I get, I do a couple of test runs to dial in those numbers. I can usually figure it out by the second or third pull haha.
Oh yeah, this underrated cheap little baby kick ass to many bigger serious mashienes. It can give you tasty, sweet coffee full of flavours very similar to jezva preparation and also fresh turbo shots
Hello. Does your basket disassembles from your portafilter and get stuck in the machine? Because i got the same basket an in pare with the stock delonghi portafiter it get stuck as it also doesn't lock in the portafilter. I ordered the same bottomless portafileter from aliexpress and im waiting for it to get delivered hoping that i wont get the same result with it
Hello! I would wait to use your aftermarket basket with the new portafilter. I had the same issues trying to use the basket on the original portafilter. You can also play around with the spring to make the basket a little tighter, but I wouldn’t recommend that haha.
@@iambreeeezy Ok. Thanks for the answer. I will continue to use the delonghi's basket from which i have removed the spring to depressurise it until i get the new portafilter.
Hi I was told you could use a not gasket portafilter yet this looks bottomless does it work OK as I have the exact same machine and wanted a bottomless one. Thanks
I have the same machine, using the stock portafilter I get great results but I was curious to see the hype of the bottomless portafilter. Just got it and now my extractions are super watery. Not sure whats happening so im thinking of getting a HUGH by IMS basket. Anyone else that can help
Try a finer grind setting! Watery extract can usually mean the coffee grounds aren’t fine enough to slow the flow of the water. I suggest a better coffee grinder if you don’t have one yet! It should be okay, even if you modify the original portafilter, you should still be able to get the same results, as long as the coffee is ground fine enough.
Thank you for your response! I unfortunately do not have a coffee grinder and probably won't buy one for another month or two. I use Lavazza Roma Espresso Grind packs 😅. I'm thinking of buying a better basket right now as I've seen a people use the HUGH by IMS basket with better success. What are your thoughts on this?
I have almost the same exact set up. What grind setting and time are you using on your grinder? I have been struggling to dial mine in. I am getting my 36gram yield far too fast in like 12 seconds.
It was off of Amazon, though the reason I didn’t add any affiliate links is because I can’t even find it anymore. It’s a bottomless portafilter that allows you to see how your espresso is being extracted.
I just started brewing! Could you comment on how important you think an automatic grinder is, compared to a single-blade grinder? I am doubting my single blader is the biggest flaw of my routine (or maybe I am putting too much blame on it).
Not to seem too critical, but a blade grinder is the worst thing you can use for coffee. I started my journey about two years ago, went from a blade grinder to a cheap Costco burr grinder, then switched to the one in this video (Breville Smart Grinder Pro), the difference in each step I took was HUGE. If you want to do espresso, a burr grinder is of the utmost importance, and one that can go fine and consistent (from what I’ve looked at, this grinder is one of the best you’ll get at its price point).
@@Cookerr64 not too critical at all! I am definitely getting the same vibe everywhere - youtube, reddit, random googled pages - people been telling me not to use blade grinders for espresso (or any coffee at all). I will absolutely upgrade when the budget becomes available. Only opposite opinion was from this owner of a budget coffee stand. He uses a 300$ grinder for his coffee shop and says 50$ grinder should be enough for home use. He still suggests burr grinder though.
Should be weight of the coffee to water. If you put in 18g of coffee you would aim for 36g of espresso in the cup. You would need to do calculations. You look up the density of water, go to an omni calculator that finds volume from density and weight, and then you have the exact volume of espresso you need to meet the ratio. This is also good for converting weight to volume or vice versa for random things when you are able to figure out the density of whatever you are converting
Have you tried any other ports filters off Amazon? I’m looking now and the one you got says out of stock. I really want you his for my machine which is the same as yours. Thanks for any info!
Thanks for this video! A budget oriented setup in which every penny is well spend! I read a lot about the naked portafilter damaging the delonghi and causing leaks, so I wonder, how it it holding up after a year? Still doing fine? Furthermore, I wonder if you use the basket that came with the portafilter? Because my 51mm tamper unfortunately does not fit the basket that came with the portafilter.
Hello! Thanks for the comment. This current setup is still going strong! I’ve been a little busy with school and work for the past year, so I haven’t gotten around to replying much. Anyways, I bought a different 51mm portafilter basket, which worked well with the aftermarket one you saw in the video. Works well with 51mm tampers. Amazon listings are always hit-or-miss, as some will remove/repost the listing, which make it hard to link specific things. If you’re interested in saving a ton of money for a decent setup like this, it’ll take some fidgeting and tinkering before you figure out what works. It’s been a headache here and there, but it’s been fun!
@@iambreeeezy Thank you so much for your reply! Well, in between all the tinkering, your video definitely helped a long way as a good reference :)! Thanks for that. I asked about the filter because I have the same setup, also the Stilosa with a SGP and a naked portafilter, but shots pull so quickly (even on low grind settings) with the 15bar espresso machine that I cannot get above the 20 seconds for a shot. Out of curiosity, did you manage?
@@MartijnK1 Yes! My machine still manages to extract 32-36 grams of espresso within 28-30 seconds. I put in around 18 grams of coffee into the portafilter. I have the setting anywhere between 16-10, anything finer tends to choke my machine. How fresh would you say your beans are?
Anything special when getting the naked portafilter? Want to do this with mine, just want to make sure there isn’t some stupid spec on the tabs I’m not aware of
@@leanderson4250 nothing special other than making sure you have a good shot/troubleshooting before putting on a regular portafilter and going. This one in particular is 51mm as stated, so make sure you get one that has the same amount of ears and is just as wide as your original portafilter.
Great video! So I'm wondering, what's the point of the metal wand for the frother if it can't easily make nice textured milk? I figured I should take it off but felt like it was incorrect. any thoughts on this?
Thank you so much! I’ve been busy with school so I haven’t had the time to record or reply. The metal wand automatically whips air into your milk, so when it gets hot enough to pour, you end up with a ton of foam. If you want more control over how much foam you want, I suggest removing it! Some people also have a problem with the rubber tip popping off when steaming. Just use a clean zip tie where the rubber nozzle connects to the steamer!
@HomeBaristAnt What do you mean by automatically? still confused because I'm not sure it's me but I can't make nice foam with the metal on. the bubbles are always way too frothy and large but i don't have a problem when i take it off. why would someone want this
@@FoxoticTV the assumption is that when people buy a machine at this price point, they don't wish to spend their time learning how to steam their milk properly. So they add the metal guard which leaves loads of room between the milk and where the steam exits the rubber tip to inject air into the milk. As you said, you end up with wayyy more bubbles and too much froth. Reality, you want as little gap as possible so you can control how much air you add etc. For most people buying this machine, they see the bubbles and the foam and they're happy, whereas we see it and want it done properly, hence why we take off the metal bit:)
@@FoxoticTV No worries, I got mine as a birthday present so I'm in the same boat:) If you want to learn how to properly steam the milk using the rubber tip, I would strongly recommend the steam milk for latte art video by Lance Hedrick, personally haven't found a better explanation than that one!
Of course, no problem! The bottomless PF went up in price, but this is the exact one I purchased: www.amazon.com/dp/B08FBCL8CZ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_X5NVCA6C5Z3SDSQEGHP6?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 Distribution Tool: www.amazon.com/dp/B083DP56MP?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I recently got this machine and having a bit of trouble My steamer isn’t even as half as powerful as the one shown, and the steam is lukewarm. Also my espresso pours out with in 5 seconds. If anyone has any tips, that would be awesome!
How is your setup looking like? Have you changed things like the portafilter? Do you turn the power knob to steam mode and wait for the green light before steaming? What kind of coffee are you using? Fresh ground? Preground? There’s a lot of questions, but I think I may be able to help!:
HomeBaristAnt Hey thanks for the quick response, everything I have is still stock. I’m using one of my favorite local shops espresso blend and giving it an extra grind before packing it in. The one thing I don’t have yet is a metal cup for frothing the milk, I’ve been using a mug mostly, but trying to follow all of the standard instruction for frothing and it just gets super foamy on top and doesn’t change past that, usually ends up being pretty lukewarm too.
@@jacksonsteevens1104 try removing the silver tip from the steamer. Under the silver wand should be a rubber nozzle, that should work better. Also, you can steam a little longer after the green light goes off. Repeat the steaming process a couple times and your milk should be good! It takes a while, but the texture I get from oat milk is still hot, good and latte-art usable!
Nothing pretentious, just awesome to see someone really knows how to maximize an espresso machine. Really good stuff, genuinely impressed !

What sort of portafilter do you have ?
It was off of Amazon, though the reason I didn’t add any affiliate links is because I can’t even find it anymore. It’s a bottomless portafilter that allows you to see how your espresso is being extracted.
How long do you froth the milk? Great video btw!
Drink the damn coffee!!!
Can you link the the bottom portafilter please?thank youuu
i have the same machine and my basket is always pretty watery when im clearing it. what could i be doing wrong?
Did you modify the rubber steam wand? Because my model ECP3420 is very short.
How do you get the wand to not blow off when the panarello is removed? 😆
I've seen a few people zip tie them on. This is what I plan to do eventually with mine.
Wich is your dosing funnel? I've bought one but it doesn't fit in
So just get thar bottomless portfilter 51mm from Amazon? I have same machine. Do you have item number? Thanks
Make sure you buy the 51mm portafilter with two locking tabs on the side, not the one with three.
great work!!
how do you got the expresso taste ?
Why do you weight how much coffee you are getting? I’m new to at home espresso
Does your machine still work? I'm thinking about buying one, but reviews were saying water lacked.
@@nickzhi2710 I would suggest the breville dose control it’s more budget and works amazing!
How do you like your machine? Any issues with it reheating?
does this come with that silicon steamer spout or did you get that separately?
Portafilter mount is the same with delonghis dedica?
I believe the size of the portafilter is different from the Stilosa to the Dedica.
How many lbs of tamping pressure?.
how many mm diameter is the whole portafilter? , not a strainer
Can you get similar results with hemp milk?
Does anyone know what the 1:2 ratio is. Is it time to outflow? Or flow to time?
Should be weight of the coffee to water. If you put in 18g of coffee you would aim for 36g of espresso in the cup. You would need to do calculations. You look up the density of water, go to an omni calculator that finds volume from density and weight, and then you have the exact volume of espresso you need to meet the ratio. This is also good for converting weight to volume or vice versa for random things when you are able to figure out the density of whatever you are converting
Have you tried any other ports filters off Amazon? I’m looking now and the one you got says out of stock. I really want you his for my machine which is the same as yours. Thanks for any info!
What’s the Amazon product for the porter filler
Where can i buy the naked portfilter with 2 tips for my ec 235
Could you please put your link of amazon?
Also where did you get the wood handle from?
Would this work with the stilosa?
Where did you buy your portafilter
Hi! Where did u get the bottomless portafilter?
How many mm is your portabfilter. And what portagfilter do you use
@@grandadbeef1368 perfect explanation thank you! Makes sense now. Got mine as a Christmas gift
@@FoxoticTV No worries, I got mine as a birthday present so I'm in the same boat:)
If you want to learn how to properly steam the milk using the rubber tip, I would strongly recommend the steam milk for latte art video by Lance Hedrick, personally haven't found a better explanation than that one!
Can you send a link for the bottomless portafilter and distribution tool please?
Of course, no problem! The bottomless PF went up in price, but this is the exact one I purchased:

Can you link to this portafilter?
Do you have links? Thanks!
