    i just got this for christmas and as a former barista for two very large coffee companies i was very excited. first off, didn’t even know i could store them on the lid and not inside the machine. second, the “foam” you describe from your shot is called the crema! the middle, light brown part is called the body. and the dark brown bottom part of the espresso is called the heart. third, if you leave a tiny bit of the steam wand out of the milk & then fully immerse the wand after 3 seconds, you’ll make a latte which is steamed milk with little foam. what you made is a cappuccino which is more foam than milk. :)

    Great review! Thank you!! Not taking away anything from your review but here are just a few helpful tips i would like to add-
    * The foam/Crema tells you how fresh your espresso beans are. Less crema means older coffee. More crema means fresher coffee.
    *Tamping should be consistent and 30 lbs of pressure should be applied while tamping. So that your "puck" has the proper compaction and to limit improper "channeling". They make auto calibrated hand tampers if one really wants to be precise. 🤓🧐😁
    *The grind size(about the consistency of sugar) and tamped pressure(30lbs) should be calibrated so that the machine will pour 2-2.5 oz of coffee in 20-30 seconds for the proper extraction. Anything more/less and you will not be getting the proper extraction causing a watered-down or burnt pour.
    Hope these tips help you all tune in your brew!
    I am not a Barista just lover of espresso and a research freak, so if you have something to add or if am inaccurate in any way, please drop a comment to help me/others learn more. 😊

    • @curtdunlap6818
      @curtdunlap6818 3 года назад +4

      Actually, the "crema" is a result of the CO2 content trapped in the coffee bean which has many factors such as age as you mentioned Matt, but also the type of roast, type of bean and the grind just to mention a few. Typically, your darker roasts have the most CO2 in them. More CO2 means more crema. Nothing better than an espresso mustache!
      The amount of pressure applied during tamping is also debatable. Uneven distribution and compaction will result in "channeling" (not the psychic kind) and will give varying results regardless of the tamping pressure. What is more important is to use an even grind, dispense an even distribution and make your tamp even and consistent. The grind is subjective, but I wouldn't exceed the "sugar" size, maybe a little finer. Just don't go to the powder stage. Try different grinds! Perfect it to your taste!
      The best advice I could give is "practice, practice, practice!" Be diligent, persistent, and consistent. This is a learning process. Have fun with it!

      @grantapusdonald6105 2 года назад +1

      I’d like to add something! With the pressurized porta filters on machines such as these, you will most likely get “crema” on anything you use.

Here is a trick. ¼ twists the coffee filter holder to the right and you can get it to stop dripping long enough to remove. Cool right! Second trick. Place a white paper in front of your circle light to eliminate the little rings in your eyes. It will soften the look and show off your eyes. Thanks for the review.

    I bought one of these a couple years ago and like the coffee it produces. It is essential you buy finely ground coffee so that it can create the creama found on espresso. One important issue I found during the operation is there a retention spring in cup holder for holding the cup that holds the coffee grinds. If this spring moves to block the small slot on edge of holder no coffee will come out. You need to insure that spring does not block that slot.

    Love your presentation, simple, easy and fun to follow. I can tell how much you love this machine. I think most of time, when people complains about a machine mainly due to not choosing the "right" one for their need and expectation. For domestic using, this machine seems simple, easy to use and clean, nice taste and cost friendly. I won't expect it to tie up decent local cafe shop quality, however, you could have choice with your own beans while enjoying very simple brewing process with less effort. :-)

    The amount of pressure used for the tamper when pressing down on the grinds is directly proportional to the grind of the coffee. If the grinds are really fine, then pushing down too much will result in either slow dripping, or no espresso, which sucks. On the opposite end of the spectrum, if the grinds are too coarse and you don't press hard enough, the espresso comes pouring out too fast resulting in a sub par shot. Ideally the shot should take between 20 and 25 seconds, that means your grind/tamper ratio is good.

      Regenerator As long as the machine has a milk steamer you should be able to make it with any espresso machine. It’s about airation which creates the froth that cappuccinos have. Basically your gonna lower the milk til you hear what kinda sounds like a train and that’s the tip of the steamer frothing the milk.

    I was in Cuba at the beginning of 2020 and the Americano I purchased each morning from a local Havana cafe hooked me on espresso. At first I thought the foam was the result of dairy being added to my drink, a big no no for a black dark roast coffee drinker like myself, so I protested to the barista that I wanted black coffee, not coffee with white foam on top. He assured me nothing was added despite the white stuff on the top, so rather than be difficult, I decided to just drink it as it was served to me, and I loved it, white foam and all (aka crema).
    So when I got back to the U.S. I decided to acquire my own espresso machine to try and repeat what I enjoyed in Havana everyday. This RUclips video was what sold me on the Delonghi Espresso machine. It is so simple to use and makes an excellent cup (or two) of Americano for me each morning. I even found a decent decaf espresso so I can make cups in the afternoon when I get the urge. I haven't used my regular coffee machine since my return to the U.S.
    I would recommend this machine for any wanna be start up espresso drinkers. The price is right and the end product is terrific! Thanks so much for your detailed presentation of this machine, it sold me!

    Thank you Glenda! I've been doing some research before buying my first machine. I didn't want to spend a fortune to try at home cappuccinos and lattes. Your review covered all my concerns and that you've had it close to a year answers to the durability of this product. I wanted a machine that does not take pods but rather just raw coffee. I'm curious to know what coffee you all suggest? And do you grind your own/how fine? Thanks again for excellent information! You are a sweetie!

    For people wondering, if you turn the knob on "on" position, you can have hot water by placing a cup under the frother and turning the steam knob to on. However, De'longhi says not to use it for more than 60 seconds. Probably due to pressure.

    I’m getting the hang of using this machine. One thing that I don’t seem to be able to avoid is getting too much foam when I steam the milk. I don’t particularly like the foam but I do want the milk to be hot and thick (and shiny). I bought a cup to steam the foam in but the foam completely overflows it before the milk is totally hot. Kind of annoying.

    • @IndigenousBrittany
      @IndigenousBrittany 4 года назад +1

      Jamie Walters the more air you let into the milk, the more foam will be created. This happens by the end of the steam wand being placed slightly above the milk, aka you wanna put the steam wand as low as you can into the milk. I’m a barista and specialize in lattes and cappuccinos. I wouldn’t recommend a small wide carafe for steaming milk, like the one she has. Rather I’d recommend a deep-set, thinner carafe as these cups won’t produce as much unnecessary, unwanted foam. Skimmer milks also won’t produce as much foam. I use plant-based milks and it’s easier for me to not be overwhelmed by foam when steaming them. Also, I’m not sure if that has anything to do with this being a short steam wand. Because at my work, our steam wands are quite long. I’ve been looking into getting this particular machine myself so idk I’d have to personally try this one out lol.

    • @jamiewalters3334
      @jamiewalters3334 4 года назад

      Brittany Thompson let me know if you do get it and what you think. The wand is rather short but I put it most of the way and the results vary for me.

    • @wefeelelated
      @wefeelelated 4 года назад +1

      I find I have sort of the opposite problem not enough foam but it’s still not hot enough. I have to stop let it get back to ready and then keep going! I would suggest filling your milk cup up more and that will help get less foam . I think I also figured out my problem lol!

    If you want the espresso without a hobby, this machine makes sense but it won’t provide you the silky body, rich flavor, and natural crema of a real cafe espresso.
    This delonghi machine uses pressurized basket(a bunch of holes on one side but only 1 hole on the other) to give the illusion of foam so basically faux crema. Also the pressurized basket means you won’t have to worry about grinding your own coffee beans, grind size, and doseage. But it means a more watery espresso that may lack the full flavor of your beans.
    If you want real cafe quality espresso and really love coffee, you’ll want a machine that uses a non-pressurized basket(bunch of holes on both sides) and you will have to grind you own beans to use it. No preground coffee it has to be freshly grounded. It’s very worth it though. Trust me nothing can compare to the real thing. An espresso made from a non-pressurized basket is the way to go for the most amazing espresso experience. I’ve had both it’s a very discernible difference.
    If you are interested in getting a real espresso experience at home and are a true espresso lover, a good place to start is with the Breville Barista Express since it gives you everything you need including a grinder, tamper, frothing pitcher, and 4 baskets (2 pressurized, 2 non pressurized).
    But this of course is something you would have to want as a hobby since there is so much more you have to consider than scooping coffee and pressing a button. So if you’re really interested in espresso and want to learn more about it, save up for the Barista express (it’s gonna cost at least $600)
    Oh yeah i forgot to go say this is an expensive hobby xD

      Hey Arnold, currently have this machine in the video and its the first time Ive had to use this filter holder basket with a filter thing (before that I just had like a totally automated pod based machine- where all i ever did was hit buttons- yes im that much of a beginner). However I'm saving up to get a proper beginners machine in a years time( I was told Rancilio Silvia or Gaggia would be good beginner machines by a friend who knows alot more about this than I do)- in the mean time I'm looking to learn about grind size, technique and develop an understanding of how fiddling with different variables can alter your espresso. So my question is where can I learn about all these seemingly complex concepts in a ' brewing for dummies' fashion where they really break it down to basics - so I can follow along and develop an understanding?

    • @arnoldnguyen7630
      @arnoldnguyen7630 3 года назад +2

      Hey Sidra Mir, I’m glad you are interested in espresso making!
      The machines your friend has recommended are good (though the Silvia definitely beats the Gaggia in many reviews I‘ve seen). However I feel like you should really try to go for one of the breville machines (I have the breville barista touch, but the breville barista express is also very good and cheaper).
      The reason I recommend these is because they come with a built in grinder for your beans. The barista express comes with a decent grinder and is priced around $100 less than the Silvia. Good external grinders usually cost around hundreds of dollars(yikes) which is something you need to consider on top of your espresso machine cost. Definitely something to work towards. But overall the breville machines have great value.
      Anyways I took some notes about espresso making when I just got started. Here’s the google doc link: docs.google.com/document/d/12F44z6nvgqAGj6ds2luHAoIe1MyplDu4ftWwKFAz18Y/edit
      Take some of my notes with a grain of salt but overall it should be correct. If you want to learn more in-depth, I included several links that I’ve used when just getting started.

      @@arnoldnguyen7630 Hey thank you so much ! so I already purchased a burr grinder for $120 ish dollars ( close to a 100 GBP cuz i got it in the UK)- its the wilfa svart silver grinder. So do you still think I should go for one of the breville machines if I already have that grinder or is the grinder on the breville superior ? Thanks again - really appreciate your input :)

    • @arnoldnguyen7630
      @arnoldnguyen7630 3 года назад +1

      Hi Sidra Mir, sorry to be the bearer of bad news but the Wilfa Svart grinder is not able to grind fine enough for espresso. You can see that in James Hoffman’s review of it he made a while back and on this site here ( www.google.com/amp/s/longandshort.london/wilfa-svart-cgws-130b-grinder-review/ ).
      Other than that, It is an incredible value grinder specifically if you want to drink regular coffee (pour-overs, etc.).
      So in this case, I would still recommend getting a breville machine since it’s grinders do achieve the proper espresso grind size.
