- The Victorinox Companion turns out to be the perfect women's multi tool. It's not the only multi tool for women and it is not only for women and yet, it is a really gorgeous option that meets both the style and function needs women have expressed to me when discussing Swiss army knives.

I'm an old man and welcome being thought of as irrelevant. I have many victorinox knives and carry one daily. What the younger generation or society as a whole thinks or doesn't think of me bothers me not at all. Great video by the way

The multi tool, leatherman vs a SAK vs a pocket knife speaks to functionality for me !!! For my needs, the standard MT & the pocket Knife does not work for me. If leatherman or SAK made a MT that replaced the pliers with an equally hefty scissor, bit exchanger, knife, saw & can opener in the size of a LM Wave + I would buy two. As you know ask ten other people & you get ten different versions.
With that being said, 71 I fit into that Old Man category. Hahaha.
I prefer to think of my self as Old School. I have many younger friends & family that tease me (in good fun) I take no offense to that. Usually I tell them ""Well I made it this far !!! Now it's your turn.... LoL

I’m an old man. No worries. I really like the direction that Victorinox is going. I love the different graphic scales that they are putting on the Classics and Tinkers. I’d like to see them expand on that. Great video as always!
Thanks, SJ! The quality of their products is unsurpassed. If they can attract a younger crowd, they will be in business another 200 years. I like this one because it is really not in competition with pliers based multitools. It's just a solid EDC product
No old men were harmed in the making of this video 😂. I know because I am old. I predicted Anne would buy the Sydney Companion!! Victorinox has finally started marketing colors that appeal to ladies and I love it. As a father on two adult daughters I can get them a SAK they might actually use. I enjoyed the video and love having a woman’s perspective. Thank you Anne. Maybe her husband ‘narrowed’ her Swiss Champ 😂
Thanks for this video. Im old and a woman so I guess I fit part of the demographic. I ordered one and I love mine. I added the small lanyard and ring that comes with the sd version and that works out well. Sometimes it is a little big for my pocket, but other than that great.

I got the sidney version like the one you showed. the small lanyard is teal with a black key ring. I am just using it by itself not on my keys. It is a little to big for that for me. I have an sd on my key ring.

I kind of think that the Sydney is the most multi-purpose of the 3. The Paris is a tiny bit feminine for just everything all the time. Every day and the New York is just a little bit plain to me. Hey Anne! Glad to see you doing your thing here AGAIN! :D I agree that the hook tool does come in handy every so often; have used it to carry wood wrapped with paracord when camping. Can't wait for them to release the long-awaited red cellidor version. That said, great to see more color options for women.

I used to give Victorinox a hard time for this new knife, not because of the new tool but because of that new fashion/female vibe. But you're right, when this makes more people carry one, it's a good thing. I just wish they made a regular version of it for the rest of us...
Btw: I have that Sidney style coming in, I just couldn't wait for the regular version anymore. My wife likes the colorful scales, so the plan is that I mount them on her climber and put on plain red plus scales on my new companion.
That is a great idea! I really hope that they come out with new regular scales on this one soon. I am hoping this summer, but at least before Christmas.

I’ve never owned a SAK because I assumed they weren’t “for” me (and women’s clothes usually don’t have pockets to put pocket knives in anyway 😏), but I just ordered a Sydney companion based on this video 😃 First time I’m really excited to try one out! I showed this to my wife and she loved the colors! Even as a guy, I would have no problem carrying that. I've never seen that package opener tool before, but that is a great upgrade from the can opener since most cans have pull-tabs nowadays. Nice video!
Thank you!! I actually did a video on that package opener tool when it came out with the Swiss spirit edition earlier this year (or was it late last year?) - You don't need to go watch it, but just trust me. It works really well.
The other colors are good, too, I'm kind of embarrassed to admit that I ended up getting all 3 of them!!!

I got one of the New York style Companions on a Black Friday sale. I’m an old man and really like the version I have. The neutral colors are perfect and the tool set goes well with a Leatherman Arc. Great video. I love hearing your perspective and the fact that you’re trying to get more women to EDC tools.
Thanks! That's actually the one I carry most of the time, too, because most of my clothes are in that color and it goes really well with my purse, as well. But it definitely is not as eye catchingly beautiful as the other 2. But I really think it's appropriate for men and women, which only seems fair!! Thank you for watching and leaving a comment!

Thanks for making this video. Anything that helps a greater number of women to feel comfortable using tools is a good thing in my opinion.
For sanitizing the toothpick, I recommend keeping some of the little alcohol wipes used to sanitize injection sites with you. I use them to clean tape residue off my knife blade if I use it to open packages. At about an inch square they fit into a little pill box I always keep in my pocket.
Wow, that's a really great idea. Cause I almost never need to use it but obviously, if I need to use it, I'm not home or anything, so it's a pain in the neck and I think I'm just gonna lose the toothpick.
I'm thinking about making a video about how it is not emasculating to be with a woman who knows how to use tools. Lol

78 year-old woman here. Sadly this doesn’t work for me. I wish they offered it in a range of solid colors like they have for the Classic SD. Many of those colors are pleasing to me as a woman, much more than the Companion patterns which I find unappealing. I like the toolset, especially the addition of the box opener, and although I don’t like having to pay extra for a lanyard and the plus scales/pen, I might consider it if it were offered in solid colors. I’d absolutely buy it if it came in a range of solid colors with standard scales.
33y old male here. First of all, great video.
I‘m not an edc or sak enthusiast but I need a lot of tools in my job and am constantly looking for a knife or a pair of scissors or something. So a sak sounded like a good idea.
What did I need? Well, as mentioned, I needed a knife and a pair of scissors. I wanted a bottle opener and a corkscrew (I don‘t drink, but it‘s embarrassing if you cant open a wine bottle despite carrying a sak all the time 😂). A pen sounded nice, too and a file for nailcare would round up the scissor utility nicely. I landed on three sak‘s. The compact, the companion and the mini champ. I really want to love the compact because it‘s so slim, but the file on the hook isn‘t working for me. The companion is really the perfect knife and I love the package opener (I have never in my life needed a can opener but have to open a bunch of packages). I carry it at work and have the mini champ on my keychain (love the pen and the orange peeler for opening packages, but would love it a bit slimmer without the ruler or the spoon thingy, sad that they don‘t produce the vagabond anymore).
Tldr version: not everyone is carrying a sak to live a week in the woods. This is a City edc and I love it.
Anne, I have been a fan since the beginning! I fit the old man category too, probably closer to fuddy duddy! I've always liked the Alox knives and not very adventurous past that! I like my Compact and small 58 mm Signature Lite with translucent scales.
I don't need the package opener, if Ihave anther 2 knives.
But I will be glad to get new colourful scales for for my 5 SAKs. Will be glad for special edition of scales.
I had just watched your videos about why women are not into SAKs, and a few days later these great color schemes came out, and my first reaction was to think of what would be your opinion about them. I knew you would be happy and this cool video demonstrates it very clearly!
I’m considering getting the NY style for myself (even though I have the wooden swiss spirit already) but I’m still not sure about which one to gift my fiancée, the Sydney or the Paris style. The Paris is a little more delicate, but she is not so much into pink. 😁
Anyway, I hope Victorinox keeps adding tools and color variations to their line, and I hope more ladies carry and use them. Keep up those great videos! Cheers!
Thank you!!! I AM super happy about this. I think that in addition to looking great, the tool set is one that women will believe that they will use and therefore, they will keep it accessible, I carried a blue Leatherman juice forever and it was so beat up by the time I got rid of it, which of course, I regret now, but the problem was that I didn't really see the toolset as something I could use all the time. Unlike this tool set, which I think basically every modern human would use all the time.
It may not be enough for some people, but most of these tools would get a lot of use from a lot of adults I think.
So I've got a question. What tool ould you like to see them add next?

The awl would be GREAT if your purse strap snaps and you need to remake a hole for securing. I've used it to fix belts, in a pinch, and it's saved the day!

Oh I could not agree with you more. The efficiency and solutions are what absolutely have me addicted to Swiss army knives; I just don't like that tiny bit of hesitancy to see that they just don't look quite right for me.
I’ve been a Leatherman fan girl since ‘98, and have bought almost every version of a Leatherman you can think of. With that being said, I recently bought the Arc and it fell really short of my expectations for a $230 multi tool.
So in turn I’ve bought Victorinox. The tinker, deluxe tinker, and jet setter. I’m really liking the fit and finish of each one I’ve got. And I have seen several Swiss Tools in person, they’re beautiful. Thanks to you, I’m starting my journey with Victorinox on finding the right tool for me, but they’re all nice. Time to start a new collection.
That is awesome! What a great story! This is a hell of a time to be starting a collection - all of the Delemont 84 mm models are due to be discontinued at the end of the year and a lot more popular models have been discontinued already. The Evolution 23 hangs out in US Amazon for about $42 most of the time, and imo is the best deal in the delemont series, but if you watch Daphne Devi you will see that she has an actual emotional relationship with the evogrip s18, which has a locking blade. I watched her video and bought one for myself, too!
I'm so sad to hear that about the Arc. I have such high hopes for it. One of my hopes is that NY husband buys me one for Christmas!! But the reason I haven't spent the money on it myself is because I'm afraid I'll be disappointed. And then I'll feel guilty that I spent the money instead of happy when I see or use it.
I'm really glad to hear you're enjoying the channel. I really wish I had more time to put into it because I love to do testing and I'd love to really get out there and do better video edits as well.
You know I was thinking about this, and I wanted to say one other thing. The difference in my personal experience with Leatherman and Victorinox is that I've never had a Victorinox break on me right out of the box or have something wrong with it when I received it. That really messes with your emotions so much!

As a bloke I don't care for the three new companion styles much and the cost is prohibitive. Still, hope they turn up in xmas stockings and sell like hot cakes. Thanks for sharing, you rock.
The awl can make a decent point for clearing the gunk out from under nails, though not without danger.
The fish scaler can be used as a tiny fork, a back scratcher, a "tough foot pad" scratcher, a bread saw...
Thanks for sharing. As an irrelevant old man I thought this was a well thought out video. I think Victorinox has started down a right path but may need to go a little further. Ultimately I wish you could go online and spec out the scales, tools and steels ( I know MKM and Fox are making their own versions of SAK with N690, M390 and MagnaCut blades) as a premium service. As stated there are others starting to offer designer and premium options in their space.
Lol thanks William!! Sounds pretty relevant to me. I think that should be a premium option, too. Even a little of that would be awesome! I have one of those MKM knives and while i like the saw, the rest of it was take-it-or-leave it. The serrated blade... ugh. So confusing.
But yeah. And if it were a premium option, they could charge whatever they need to charge to make money on it and people would do it anyway. But maybe, if you had the exact PERFECT SAK you would not ever want to buy another one???

I think I might have mentioned that before, but why not switching the scales you like onto the Swiss Champ? They easy to pop off, plenty of videos for that. And also pretty easy to put on. You don't need to have a press tool for that, there are other methods. Thereby you would create your dream combo: a great looking Swiss Champ.
Once popping off and switching works fine, if you do it more than once with the same scales, you might add some glue at the connecting points. Also some people suggest warming or heating up the scales, but I never did that and I don't believe it is necessary at all. The first time I was really afraid to destroy the knife, but there is no reason to worry. It really is easy.
I use the can opener and the small blade of another Vic to pop the scales off. Applying new scales by putting them on, wrapping them in some textile, a towel for example. The applying pressure. I have used a door frame and door or a soft hammer, but I prefer using a press tool.
And yes, men also like to nice looking multi tools. On my 91mm preferred Vics (Ranger, Handyman and Cyber Tool) I applied white plus scales including the pen.
The same is true for scales of the Vic 58nmm classic knives.

I actually made my Swiss champ white, too! I use it as a backdrop for washi tape - that way I can change the look any time! :)
@@thevineclimber Great👍 I understand that the Companion is pricey and the scales can't be bought as spares. Thereby moving the scales to another Vic is inherently more risky.
I bought some red and black versions of the tooth pick and tweezers. I like especially the red ones in combination with the white scales.
Regarding the lanyard I have my own version which is actually a very thin velcro tape forming a loop. Therefore my lanyard is also a spare velcro tape for emergencies and the loop is big enough to insert my four fingers into the loop. When grabbing the knife it locks my fingers in place so that they can't slip under the blade by accident - especially useful when operating the saw.
I have used the corkscrew many times for opening wine with greatest success. I use the toothpick more often than the tweezers. This version of the Companion is perfect for the old man hippie. I’m hoping they come out with more color varieties including the basic red cellidor.

Tobias, thank you!! You are so right - the hippie aesthetic on this is virtually ageless. And I feel the gentle and positive, helpful feel of this knife represents the best of what we associate with the hippies.
I've thought about taking some of the cool scales off of one of these and putting them on my Swiss champ. And then putting plain scales on one of these. It's a risk, but fortune favors the bold!
I have swapped scales on numerous knives as SMKW puts a lot of cool scales on SAKs but they’re always on Tinkers, my least favorite pattern. So I pop the scales and put them on other SAKs and the put the red scales on the Tinker and give them away!
The key is to soak the knives in hot water and pry them off slowly. I have used my Spyderco Dragonfly on several occasions but the small blade on a SAK works just as well.
When you snap them back on put a small drop o slow setting super glue on each rivet just in case.
@KnifeChatswithTobias They sure do, don't they? So does Swiss knife shop. I might put hiker bear on my champ... but then it won't have a pen. I guess I could mod it?? But then my hiker won't have hiker bear scales either. Oh such drama!! Why don't they make the pretty scales plus scales??
I am a straight man and I also got the Sydney Style.
I love the colors amd they go well with my other very bright outdoor gear and clothes.
And it's perfect for the train which I use one hour per day, because it looks very harmless.
Yes, I know exactly what you mean. It really goes well with athletic clothes and outdoor gear! And it's so relaxed; looks very harmless and helpful.
The package opener does look really cool but I find the 58mm Manager does all of the things I need a SAK to do at a fraction of the weight and size. I also live in an area where people open carry handguns, so I could care less about what people think about the tools I carry 😊
👍That Companion looks like a winner. I’ve always respected the Compact, too. Personally, I went from the Huntsman to the Ranger because I wanted the file. I do find use for the punch/awl/reamer and sometimes mod them so they will be a good reamer. I was using the punch on my Buck 319 to repair leather tack nearly 40 years ago. Coming to modern times, the study of package opening tools could be a topic in itself. They are popping up on more and more knives and multi tools.
This is very interesting. Yes, you are clearly right the awl is a great leather working tool and I know people also use it for some Bushcraft it even woodworking tasks and other things too I just don't find it something that I need in my daily life. But I mean, I do need a saw so as much as I love these, it can't be my EDC forever. I'm just in this tiny bit of time when I'm neither outdoors a ton nor starting fires in the fireplace.
Some time ago I did a video on tools that people have deemed a package opener for Victorinox, but there are a ton of them on a lot of tools. No I haven't excused to buy all of them! LO. L.

Old man here. VC, you've given me hope that I may yet turn my wife and daughter into SAK fans. I proudly carry a black-scaled Swiss Champ with a black Olight S2 in a single back pocket organizer, with my phone in the other back pocket (yes, I'm constantly pulling up my pants, and you're welcome for the mental image). While I can see the Missus really going for the Companion, I admit I too find its appearance quite aesthetically pleasing.
Now as much as I like that package opening tool, I'll stick with the can opener on the SC. Running all day from the undead after a zombie apocalypse builds up an appetite, and you don't want to mess around with those cans of pork and beans when you reach the safe zone!
By the way, I love that you have a backup Swiss Champ, and that you use the hook and toothpick. I used the hook the other day to move our garage door chain off the door attachment where it occasionally gets stuck, and the toothpick always comes in handy for its intended purpose, along with a bunch of other uses.

Philosophus you really had me laughing with your story. Honestly, I think the best argument for a Swiss army knife for women is the many, many ways youu will use it once you have it if you really try to put it into practice. Within the next couple of days, I will be putting out a video of everything I did with my Swiss champ in a day and it was crazy all the stuff I did and none of it was masculine things. It was all just things that happened as I did normal lady stuff like going to the church to clean LOL. You know our conversation makes me wonder if part of the problem is that we call it a Swiss army KNIFE. I use the other stuff more than the knives...
I think it’s nice to have colorways and different designs more suited for women but man this is the perfect model in my eyes and while I could purchase aftermarket scales it is a bit disappointing that they don’t offer classic colorways as well.

Awesome vid! I love me a good multitool but ascetically they are often not appealing to a lot of people - there hasn’t been much innovation in that since for a long time. I love to see a company as big and well liked as Victorinox take the leap into friendlier appearing tools. Hopefully more companies follow course and we see even more options for cute/pretty/etc. high quality tools 💜
Yes you are so right. I kind of focused on women in this video, but I think young people in general may prefer a brighter aesthetic, as well, and then everyone really loves to have something that just matches their own style!!

The chances of me buying a companion are slim even though it looks awesome. I've often wondered how sales would be effected if Victorinox let us choose any of there already-in-existence custom scales to go with any knife those scales fit. That would be cool. (I am a big fan of the textured nylon scales they offered in some variants, so being able to get those on any model as well...)
@@nirfz yes the Companion scales look cool... I have nylon scales on my sportsman, and it just feels so extra durable.
@@thevineclimber totally agree, and it wears well over the years. (the texture gets a little less on the edges with time but the tiny scratches people often have problems with are not really that visible)
The fish scaler on the Victorinox Swiss Champ is really good at cutting through cardboard boxes. Try it and see what I mean. 👏🏼

Hi Bill - YES I totally get it!! When tools are marked to women, you feel like you shouldn't buy them, or if you do you feel... wrong? with them in some way. I got to admit, these are great SAKs. They really are the ultimate urban carry for those who want a smaller SAK than a Swiss champ LOL.
It is too expensive. But that is just for now - they want to make money on their new tool that makes these package openers, I am sure!
The fun colors of the Sydney are great for men or women. Just don't eat for a couple days, then you can get it!! LOL j/k The process on these are too high; I'm sure they will make a less expensive model in a year or so.

As a 57 year “old” grandpa, I’m not opposed to the colors offered in this model. At one time, everything I chose was blue, but after a career in graphic design, I can no longer pick a favorite color. Swiss Army knives are red to me though, so I hope other colors are offered. This is nearly the perfect tool set for the everyday annoyances, like you had said. This is probably better than the compact for me.
Yes, I think it beats the compact... at least for me it does because the file is better, and the package opener is better to me because I like my blade to be sharp and fresh. I just wonder if the combo tool would be better than the cap lifter! I actually think this also pairs well with a pliers based multitool - I know there is some redundancy, but it keeps you from wanting a scissors anyway!

You can use a T Shank Jigsaw blade with the O ring and the parcel hook. I am glad that woman have this. I understand what you mean because Red is my least favorite color, even though I am going to keep my 1st Swiss Army Knife, the Explorer Red. I really like the color green and I am going to see if I can find a neon green handle for this, or get the neon green toothpick and tweezers and get dark green or black handles. I carry a Victorinox Rambler and every so often I have to smooth a rough nail. I really like the toolset on this tool. I never understood why every knife needs 2 blades, especially on a limited size toolset like this. I always wanted a file, these scissors, and a package opener on a knife. I wish the bottle opener was the same as the one on the Compact, because it can open cans and bottles, but still be used on phillips and flat screws, but it does have the plus scales and I might stay with these scales for a bit. I just ordered this Sidney 1 and the more I look at it, the more it's growing on me. I might be able to use it in front of the women in my life and get them into this knife. Knowing my luck I will lose my knife and have to buy another. 😆 🤣 😂
I am happy that you seem extremely happy about this. I don't understand why people hate it. So many guys keep saying they wanted a toolset close to this but yet they complain about getting it.

The package opener is great! They should replace the cap lifter for the lifter/can opener tool on other SAKs and have this instead.

Looks like the package opener can also be a can opener(?). You can also use the nail file tip on some Phillips screws too 👍.
I use the toothpick as a cleaning aid for the well of the knife and other nooks & crannies. Over time, dirt will find its way inside the toothpick pocket and there's no way to clean it thoroughly without resorting to swapping scales. And instead of having to clean the toothpick before and after, I'd rather look for a twig that I can whittle into a fresh toothpick.

I carried a swiss tinker as a teen. Now I'm middle aged and love my old man knife it's a usa made old timer pal.
I would be really tempted to get one for my wife, but the problem is she works in a school and all knives are forbidden in schools here. She carries a Classic SD anyway, because it’s so tiny no one would notice it (or complain if they did), but the Companion being 91mm and its knife are a bit more conspicuous. Bladeless version one day?
It seems like the package opener, scissors, and file the most essential tools on there, especially for my wife, the rest could be replaced with something else (she’d probably like a Philips to open toy battery compartments) or removed. Definitely add plus scales for the pen.
I’m deciding between this knife and the Compact for Christmas gifts for some ladies in my life… are the box opener and the file worth the extra layer?
and on the other hand, I’ve heard the combo bottle opener on the Compact sucks, but I haven’t tried it… does it actually suck?

I am a woman and have a knife collection of 340 fixed and folding knives. I don't like pink or super feminine colors in my knives and multitools. I did buy the SAK Companion in the New York City color scheme. The two other colors did not appeal to me. My other SAKS are in the red, blue, green, orange and white plastic scales. I have a Bigfook SAK Tinker from SMKW because I thought it was campy. My SAX Alox colors are in tiger orange, silver, red, blue, and yellow lime. I like SAKs and in other colors but not pink.
The only thing that would make this better imo is if they replaced the bottle opener with the multi tool bottle opener/ can opener

I think the awl is there just for safety reasons. A lot of people and as specially a lot of Ladies are not experienced enough to poke a hole with a non locking Blade. You might only do this every couple of years, but if you don‘t have an awl you will do it with the knife. At least try 😂 beside that, what other tool should go into that space? I don‘t think there are too many options in the lineup.
Oooh - this is a really good point! You are absolutely right. And also the awl is an amazing ribbon curler lol. I do not care for the fine screwdriver. I think the chisel could get some play as a scraper? I don't like the awl as a scraper if the item being scraped is wide, because then it won't reach. There are not many back layer tools to choose from.

As a millennial who's getting older, I've started admiring the "older" vintage aesthetics more. I've found myself wanting to add tools to my collection that look like they would belong in my father or grandfathers tool box. They dont make them like they used to 😉
You are not kidding! I just was messing around with my dad's hand drill a month or 2 ago. That thing is STILL solid as h-e- double hockey sticks. I hope that more companies will want to make new tools that last, too - but the prices are high!!

I agree with everything you say, but its still too expensive. £80 in the UK, also Victorinox sell a quick release neck strap for £5 but that one is £17.99? Its great to see the joy it gives you, but my hiker with plus scales only cost £34 🤷 Great video though, nothing wrong with the content or length in this old blokes opinion! 👍

Hi Anne - great video as always. I have not got any of the companions yet - mainly because I think they are not good value. Here in the UK the companions are not avilable on Amazon and are £80!!😱 which is a lot compared to The Huntsman that you can get for £27 (white or silver transparent) to £33 ( red transparent or blue transparent) . Even my absolute favourite Victorinox - Midnite Manager - is under £40 and this is small enough to fit in a purse (pocketbook in US...). Victorinox - could do better!!
Hi MB!! Yes, I agree. The value is not good at all. $75 here nearly as much as you are paying. It's not unamazon, either only available from Victorinox themselves and knife websites. I'm sure some stores have it as well, but none of them would be near me. And yet at the same time. That I say that I need to tell you that I bought all 3 of them. Because apparently the value isn't bad enough that I didn't buy them. I think they are amazing. I am actually going to get some for people as Christmas gifts. The best soulution to all problems is for victorinox to make a modular model like Goat tools does with their multitools with a blade style similar to the ranger grip series so you dont need to use your nails and small enough to fit in womens smaller pockets

There is an issue I'd like you to talk about if you never did before. Would you use the main blade to eat, or do you think it's not clean enough to do so, because of the other tools that are just close to the main blade and that are used for ''dirty'' purposes ? Actually that's the reason why I use the awl : I use it as a blade for ''dirty'' tasks to keep the main blade clean. But the other tools on the main blade's side can still be dirty.

Personally: if i intend to use the Vic blade for food, i use said blade only for food between cleaning it.
The other tools close to it usually don't get dirty enough in my usecases to "contaminate" the blade.
(Prying stones out of my shoe soles if need be, is a task i use the corkscrew for)
In more distant past (during my conscript time) i had 3 knives on me on some occasions:
-The issued field knife in the webbing. It was not to be sharpened as this would remove material, but it was to be oiled so it won't rust.
- a Vic for everything i would need a tool. (opening cans, cutting things...)
- and a slim and light backlock folding knife. Only used to cut food during that time. (was an Al-Mar sportsman)
There is only 1 reason I (man) think I wil not buy that beautiful sidney companion, that is it is so pretty. I want mu sak te be able to be a beat em upper and I just think it looks to nice. That for me is the reason i wil wait for a plain scales companion, think i wil go for plain red, yellow or black
You know I really love yellow Swiss army knives. But I don't have a single one. I think I actually may have just ordered a set of yellow plus scales from Messerspezi. It seems like a good color for the companion, which is just a cheerful, helpful knife. Thanks for commenting!

Hi Parker - it's kinda close!! I wish the Companion were shorter. But I really do like to have 2 blades, and also the nail file, so I think the Companion is a better EDC toolset. BUT, note that what I actually carry is the Swiss champ on a regular day, especially if I'm going to be around the house! I think I prefer the corkscrew, because I use it sometimes and I use the 2D Phillips a lot anyhow.
I would love a locking blade... but don't care for the lock on the Delemont S series. I put my index finger on it when I'm using it!

I didn’t fully understand the importance of having EDC gear that matches a personal aesthetic (as your videos sometimes highlight) until recently: lately I’ve been considering a sling bag, for when I need to take a few more items than pockets can carry, but a backpack would be way overkill. Most sling bags look kinnnnnnda like purses though. In fact, there was even an entire episode of Seinfeld devoted to that, where Jerry was uncomfortable carrying a bag because he thought it looked like a purse. I’d rather just not use a sling bag than feel like I was carrying a purse, as silly as that sounds-it’s just not my vibe.
Since most EDC gear is designed more with men in mind, normally this isn’t a problem, which is why I didn’t understand. But I’m starting to understand now! There are some slings out there that fit the look I’m going for, but they’re definitely less common. Nitecore makes one that’s in the ballpark, and some other styles of bags like black camera bags might do the trick too. It should be mostly black and metal, probably boxy, hard edges, large straps, buckles, and other hardware, and not at all cute. Maybe John Wick would use it. It should be clever and thoughtful, but definitely drawing more attention to its functional elements rather than its pure artistry.
It’s great for us to seek out different looks in our gear, and to want manufacturers to understand that. I’m with you!

Anne you have to put those cute scales on the swiss champ,so it turns into a lady's multitool tool lol.I think the victorinox classic is the number one women's knife to date. I always wonder why women don't carry a multitool, while they always ask for mine to use. I think it's an old taboo, that a knife is a man's prerogative, wrongly. Did you know that the Swiss champ has 3 blades? the fish scaler is an alternative serrated knife that can effectively cut through bread, cardboard, aluminum, plastic and the view of it is not as intimidating as a common knife. I have always liked the choice of two blades, I always use the small one and keep the main blade sharpened for an emergency. Every day I discover dozens of uses for every single tool of my Swiss Champ. That's the magic of the SAK, it's always there to solve all your problems. You know I think there is kind of a taboo on women carrying knives. There is another thing though when they borrow a tool from you and your Swiss champ, you open it so that they don't have to find the tool and risk wrongly opening a knife blade. I don't want to say that women are not taught knife handling skills and therefore are not comfortable with knives because many women are taught, and many men do not seem to have any knife handling skils. Likewise, I have seen plenty of men be very confident with their firearms handling skills and still be totally wrong. I think there might be a difference in confidence between the genders on these things, though.

I am a woman and my perfect knife is a big blade, saw, magnifying glass, hook and can opener and scissors. It can be pretty, but must have this combination and should not be the size of a Swisschamp. Somehow, saw, hook, magnifying glass are not a combination. You either get saw or magnifying glass. And for some reason the hook is sometimes there and sometimes not.
And where can i get this knife. I am not seeing this knife anywhere and you just posted this video 3 hours ago.

Honestly, I've never understood why Victorinox limits scale options at all. Unlike toolset issues of matching tools to springs or manufacturing tooling issues, scales are easy to install. I'd love to have some of the cooler scales on a SAK right out of the box. Fortunately, it's easy enough to replace them and I've done that a lot myself. But, I just don't get why Victorinox doesn't do more options when you get a SAK.
I wish the 58mm scales were as easy as the 91mm

Yes, you have a good point. The longer you live, the more you realize how a lot of these judgments are pointless and are made by people who have yet to get a clue about life. I shudder to think of some of the ideas I held firmly, or the opinions I expressed, when I was young and dumb (er).

On the point of tools shouldn't be cute or colourful, we've kind of always done it. Ancient boomerangs have been discovered with colourful dyes, and intricate carvings. Swords, daggers, and knives have had "unnecessary" embellished. Its what we do, even Neanderthals decorated their scraping tools.
