  • @feliscorax

    I owned one of these - my first Mac after years of Windows hell - and it was seriously the best computer I’ve ever owned. Subsequent Macs I’ve owned (currently own and use a retina MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, and iPhone XS for my particular workflow) might be more powerful, but none of them have ever given me the joy that this model did: it was always a real pleasure to use. I was able to keep that thing relevant and running for almost 12 years before the hard drive finally gave up - and good luck finding a new PATA to fit in it - and I decided to upgrade. Now it sits in the corner of my office as a piece of the décor; it still doesn’t look out of place.

    • @DetroitBORG
      @DetroitBORG  7 лет назад +7

      So far every one I've looked for is cracked around the hinges which explains why that model was so short-lived. It's actually one of the few Apple products I didn't buy from 2009 onward (including the previous Mac Pro).

      @DetroitBORG  7 лет назад +10

      It would probably blow your mind then that the G5 iMac in this video was only $25 on eBay. It's really remarkable how cheap they are, it really comes down to their abundance and the fact that Apple stops supporting software updates which often drives them into premature obsolescence.

    You brought me years back in time!!! I remember as a teenager I was working in a computer shop building PCs when I first saw an iMac G3 and I got one for myself. I then decided to go for the upgrade with this exact model! Unfortunately due Apple's unusual design I didn't notice the thermal paste when I opened it to upgrade the RAM. I ended up burning the logic board and I had to replace it. It served me well for 8 good years until I got my first macbook pro.

      I have been buying and selling those professionally. Those batteries never leaks. Those are lithium primary cells (not rechargeable) and not nickel cadmium.

      Just get one cheap that's not working and cannot be saved, tear it down, build a hackintosh in it. Profit :)

      Péter Lukács I dont think you could find components that could fit inside that weirdly shaped case. Maybe a NUC or an arduino based. Not to mention parts with "hackintos" spec.

      Hardware design wise its more future proof unlike most PC designs before and after and can still appeal to girls as well in my opinion Štěpán Pazderka!

    I love this iMac and to my mind it’s one of Apple’s most appealing and wonderful designs. I read somewhere it earned a place in the museum of modern art (MoMA), and rightly so. I still have one, and even if it stopped working I’d keep it purely for the way it looks!

    This iMac looks like an inspiration for the Surface Studio
