I did something similar during the Pandemic. Gutted the dome and swapped in an AsRock A300 motherboard with a Ryzen 3400G. For brightness control I use MonitorControl and it works with every display. I wonder if that would work too.
Monitor Control Dims the image but it doesn’t actually lower the CFL Backlight brightness. Juicy-Link interfaces directly with the original hardware to lower the brightness. Hope this clears things up!
@@juicy_crumb actually MonitorControl does interface with the display and change the brightness on the display itself not just the image brightness. I've tested this with about 30 displays.

Just blinked its power light, nothing more. I tried several of the common fixes (and some of the less-common ones) -- reseated all the connectors, changed the battery, reset the PRAM, etc., blew hot air on the power supply using my hot air station (some models had power supplies known to have bad capacitors, and heating them brings them back to life. I was still somewhat leery of recapping high voltage stuff at the time, so recapping it was not an option) and also tried swapping in different memory, unfortunately to no avail. Ended up selling it because I was getting fed up with it, plus I needed the money. You have NO IDEA how overjoyed am that I came across this video! I have been waiting for someone to build a solution like this for YEARS. I've seen all the videos on how to convert a G4 iMac, but they all looked incredibly daunting and I knew I'd just end up destroying mine. This is an immediate order for me. So, so, so looking forward to trying this out.
The problem is in the firmware. They need to add a routine to the firmware to detect if there is input to the hdmi. If there is, it sends the signal, if there is not: 1. Cuts the power supply to the monitor through a relay (requires re-wiring) 2. Adjusts the screen brightness to minimum (or completely turns off the backling, if possible) and Leave it like this, as soon as it is plugged into the socket, it will be on. Another cool solution would be to add an HDMI CEC controller to be able to control the computer through HDMI, this would allow a physical on/off button on the motherboard, which will make the computer sleep/turn off via HDMI. The motherboard's USB should be a USB 3.0+ hub that derives all ports from a single port on the Mac mini, connected internally, as well as HDMI
The DockLite G4 uses the "Hotplug Detect" pin to identify when a host device is connected and activates the backlight accordingly. Due to the architecture of the display and how Apple designed it there was no way for us to verify when the display was receiving an actual video source without adding additional complexity/cost to the design.
This is so cool! I've always adored the look of the iMac G4, but it was before my time as a Mac user (I switched in 2008/2009), so seeing what you've done with this makes my heart happy. I think its fair to say that its no longer an iMac G4 - its now an iMac M2. And I love it!

Thanks alot for showing how it can still work in 2024 🤗 I still have 2 of them in my basement (1 I will keep as original as it is) and was researching over the last years, to replace the original board with a newer Mac mini. But everything I found looks complicated and my talent for soldering is very limited. 🙈 That's why I never tried the already existing solutions. I was still waiting for an "easier" way and now it's available. 🤗 Thanks alot.
I have a dead 20” iMac G4 and I’ve been waiting for YEARS for something like this and have carted it around the country with me as I moved from place to place- if they decide to produce these with the Mac Mini (even an older intel one) already mounted to the board they can just take my money!!! 😍😍😍😍
Thank you so much for this video. I have a 17" inch iMac G4 that I have always wanted to turn into an M1 iMac G4. Now that you've created this video, I will be on the lookout for a 20" inch iMac G4, since Juicy Crumb only sells a board for the 20" inch iMac! Besides being a MAC User, I also collect old Macs. I have 5 old iMacs going back to 2000, 7 old Apple Laptops going back to 1995 and 2 old desktops going back to 1993. Keep up with the great content! Love your show!!!
Over the last couple of weeks I’ve been working on my own project to convert a dead 17” G4 to M1. I elected to swap the display panel out because I decided that that would be easier than trying to create a driver for the old one and leave me with a better result too. The biggest pain so far is trying to find the right connectors for the things on the M1 Mac Mini board. I can read the pinout of the fan header, status LED, and power button, but trying to find connectors to tap into that non-destructively seems impossible. These guys have gotten halfway with my hopes of creating a board to replicate the rear I/O neatly which is exciting.
This is awesome, by far the best video I have seen all year! :) Modern internals combined with the incredible design of the iMac G4, what a legend. Instant subscribe.
This was great to see in my feed as I just saved an iMac G4 from being thrown out. Sadly the board being mentioned only has the 17 and 20 inch model of the iMac G4 for sale, not the 15 inch, which is the one I saved. I hope there is a way to know if it will ever be released or will I need to end up sodering tons of wires, instead of the plug and play essentially shown in this video.
What a great and beautiful project. The quality of the display and. the resolution look amazing. If this would be offered in shops, I would consider buying it. Really great.
I have a 20" iMac g5 that is a ppc one. But it seems to be having some problems. I'm not sure if the display is the same but this one is a very nice display. ❤
Display of the Original G5 20" is the same as the iMac G4, however it has different connectors and brackets. There may be a G5 board in the future, so keep an eye out.
Many years ago I tried a similar thing when I fished a WORKING 15" iMac G4 out of an ewaste dump. I later sourced the parts of a 20" display, a Haswell NUC and 16GB RAM of a particular model, all in an attempt to turn it into a hackintosh. Although the case can fit the NUC stripped of its case, the display bolts right in but is too heavy for the base, and I cut up the logic board saving only the section with the ports. It now sits disassembled in my basement. The NUC also sits idle with one RAM slots failing, the memory is in my daily laptop, and the power supply was rehoused as a standalone 12v 10.5A power supply. I am still looking for a way to add enough weight to the base to match the 20" display.
Man, this is amazing! I have a 20" iMac with a broken motherboard and this would be perfect for that. Whenever they are widely available, I totally am gonna snag one of these.
I bought the original 15" monitor iMac the day it came out, back in 2002. It still works (although I don't use it, as I have a 2015 27" iMac) but I love what you've done with yours!
That is just AMAZING! I'm so envious - I wish I had an iMac G4 customised for Intel i7 capable of running everything from Mavericks to Catalina, I'd be using it every day...
BRO! I’ve been wanting this EXACT thing for my 2002 iMac G4! Like I’ve literally been praying to every deity known and unknown for something like this. I’ve wanted to restore my old iMac to modern glory for so long and now it feels like I’m finally a step closer! 🥲
If they created a variation of this board with a mount for a Mac mini system board, this would be perfect.
I think I'm going to try to design some kind of 3D printable mount

Man! .... from Retro to fast Future 2024! iMac G4 is surely an antique! This Video shows it WORKS !
Love this so much, I have a Classic II with an M1 mini inside and an iPad retina LCD on a controller board, but this is next level! Kudos!
I've always wanted to do this! You're living my dream. I'll always have a soft spot for the iMac G3 (my first ever computer), but the G4 is the most beautiful computer ever made.
these were pretty epic machines. what resolution is it running at? The stock G4 I think ran at 1280x860 or something...
The 20" model had a 1680x1050 display.
@@pseudotasukidamn that’s pretty solid for 2002. Basically just 16/10 1080p
@@aidanbrooks771no, it's 1050p
i'm actually crying... The absolute love being shown to this gorgeous design is incredible!
this is the coolest channel ever, im 24 and picked up a g4 powermac recently and shoved my windows pc inside, your channel makes me wanna do it again. im also in an emo band playing 90's - early 00's inspired stuff and your stuff sounded. badass
what a gorgeous sleeper!
The iMac G4, to this day, is my ideal computer. I used them in school, and the sheer beauty of it is seared into me to this day.
Saturday morning just watchin’ mah stories
You know what, im just gonna go ahead and say it... Thats BEAUTIFUL!
This is fabulous!! I have the iMac G4 20" - I am considering this!
Thanks alot for showing how it can still work in 2024 🤗
I still have 2 of them in my basement (1 I will keep as original as it is) and was researching over the last years, to replace the original board with a newer Mac mini.
This iMac G4 20" was my 1st Mac, and I agree it was probably the best iMac ever.
That right there is **Shenanigans Hall of Fame** material!!! Awesome, Sean 😂😂😂
I wish they made a similar board for the 30 inch cinema display damn
This is the sort of content that I just can’t enough of, thank you!
but THANK you for pointing us in the Juicy Crumb up-scaling direction :D
Rereleasing the g4 imac with modern hardware might even get me to come back to apple.
Extra thumbs up for playing 7Days!
I love when people come up with these kinds of solutions. Everyone wins when this stuff stays outta the landfill
Simply fantastic! Nicely done! Reusing beautifully crafted computer housings is a fantastic project and an inspiring video! Thank you!
I'd love to see something like this done to the iBook G3 Clamshell
Unfortunately their rarity and plastics deteriorating wouldn't make this viable.
This iMac is what i ever wanted
I always wanted to do that, but I"'m not that good to rewire it again. This solution is fantastic. I just ordered mine!
Im from Australia so, Im glad we could help.
Holy crap that is one of the coolest things I've ever seen!!!!!
One of my teachers had a sunflower mac and I always loved the way it looked
This is the EXACT type of video I want to make on my channel.
@@digitalrampage 👍
This display you can see from all angles. When it's going.
i have 2 of these G4s. i would LOVE to do this mod and use it as my daily machine. but sadly i'm not skilled enough
oh my GOD i've just actually got to the point where it shows how simple this is!! i need one of these boards NOW!
do you know if they will release a version for the smaller machines?
@@TPDI'm a Co-Founder of Juicy Crumb, we do plan on releasing a variant for the smaller machines but no ETA as of yet :)
This is crazy awesome! G4 iMacs need not be collecting dust anymore.
Apple should definitely build the iMac like this again. So many people complain about the adjustability of the display and it's limitations
This is very rad. And it looks very do-able
That's my dream computer too. Nice work Sean!
Such a sweet sleeper build, always loved the G4 design!
That was totally AWESOME!! Now to get an old iMac G4 and upgrade it!
Nice to see you resurrect this classic. I love these kind of builds.
FANTASTIC... I WISH I WOULD HAVE NEVER GAVE MINE AWAY YEARS AGO!
I bought the original 15" monitor iMac the day it came out, back in 2002. It still works (although I don't use it, as I have a 2015 27" iMac) but I love what you've done with yours!
The Lump-Stick & Square (or rectangle for the wide screen version)
Can I do this to a smaller screen model?
The juicy crumb looks like a map of towns sprinkled across an Australian (or Kansan) plain.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder! To me it looks bloody awrful.
I have always wanted to do this. And with the Power Mac G4 Cube. Such beautiful computers.
You just transformed your iMac G4 into a monitor for your M2 Mac Mini, what a feat!
