What an excellent job! I am working on a 6” hemisphere mount for iPad Pro 11” with gaming handles and thought of using an old G4 but decided to go with a 6” anodized aluminum shell that will contain a 6AH LiPo, charging circuit and amp/speaker array into an articulated arm with magnetic back fiber panel with pogo pins.
This was amazing to watch. Thank you for the time and effort you took to make this. I always thought these macs looked awesome and I’m just now getting into the ecosystem at 34 y/o. It just warms my heart to see this.
I have a 2009 Mac mini and it runs with my 16:10 NEC in native quality … not full HD but my second screen is 1080p and both runs nice and smooth … btw. Awesome project… I love it…
Id honestly never seen one of these in person so I had no idea it had a fan in it or that the ram was accessible on the bottom of the unit. The original Imac G3 (Colored ones) didnt have a fan. I went to PC in 01 and I didnt get back into Apple products til 06. Thanks for the video :-)
i did this to a 15" iMac g4 like 6-7years ago. I repinned the original lcd to a DVI connector and powered it with the psu. I kinda wanted this 17" model so i never finished it. Ended up selling the pc hardware away from it.. I should finish the project someday properly like this

Everything looks packed soooo tight, and the power adaptor in the middle of everything looks like a potential problem on hot summer days.... Still, you've done a great job with some simple and available solutions, I like it very much! Respect man!

I think a better cooler (Noctus makes a low profile called the NH-L9x65 which is designed for Mini ITX buids. I would have moved that wifi antenna to the back of the LCD panel (behind the metal chassis and the plastic shell). I would have put in a better case fan and connected it to the motherboard PWM header, this way you can monitor VRM temps and have the BIOS adjust the fan RPM accordingly. Keep up the amazing work! Great mod but could be better. Get rid of the bulky WiFi and power brick and put them externally to let some air for the machine to breathe. I'd also replace the old DVD door with a white metal mesh for more air flow.
Why didn’t you open the power supply that powered the LED and rewired it instead fitting the whole thing including casing? All in all great effort and well done!
The fan on top should be reversed so it pulls in air downwards. The CPU fan pulls against the top fan, so they fight for airflow, causing some extra noise.
all good, but wire mess inside is horrifying 1) i think you can find power supply small enough to fit inside. 2) you can use power supply for picoPSU also to power LCD 3) if you not afraid soldering small things you can reuse original cables to LCD
How much was the cost of the modification? How much would you charge for a kit to do the modification? This was absolutely brilliant and I would love to do it to my G4.

Might be late, but are NUCs Hackintosh compatible? If so, would putting a NUC inside be cleaner? It’s smaller than ITX boards, and you can use the free space for cable management and more fans (more airflow), if dissemble the NUC and remove the chassis?
А почему питание экрана нельзя было объединить с питанием материнской платы? и там и там все прекрасно работает от 12 вольт (и на будующее, лучше брать материнку с разьемом lvds, это позволит подключить матрицу напрямую к материнке, что упростит конструкцию)..

It's not bad idea but you should have made a custom PCB to adapt the original connectors to the mainboard instead of using cables.
