I never heard of number 1 and I gotta agree with the placement, at first I thought stan should of had number 1 because of how much of an impact the word stan meant after that but the story told about billy was insane, especially the twist about how he was there and did it too
While it's great dancing with the devil is a masterpiece and immortal technique could have easily had more songs on hear like you never know dancing with the devil deserves top spot
Lesley by Dave is an absolute masterpiece. Remember the first time I heard it I was trying not to get emotional but even now I still get goosebumps every time I hear it.
J Cole doesn't get the respect he deserves from old school heads. His storytelling on wet dreamz is original, insightful, poetic, and extremely accurate. Coming from an old school head.
I feel like you can make a separate top 10 story telling songs for each rapper. Nas is too good, Kdot is too good, Em is too good. Everyone is crazy talented.
@handleislolfacts when I Got a story to tell is literally a true story that Biggie did lmfao. Anthony Mason literally got cheated on and robbed by Biggie lmfao. I remember being in the 4th grade and listening to my friends Walkman and hearing Dance with the devil for the first time. It scared me so bad I didn’t finish it. Then in the 6th grade another classmate asked me if I heard it and proceeded to play it for me on his little MP3 player. We walked to his house and I ended listening to the song at least 7 times in a row and still looking dismayed and shocked by the ending every listen.
1. Immortal Technique - Dance with the devil 2. Jedi Mind tricks ft. RA the Rugged Man - Uncomon Valour (a little borderline choice i know, but Ra's verse is inspired by his fathers vietnam war experience, and is simply a legendary piece of art) 3. Common - I Used To Love H.E.R. ( google the beef who happened because of this song! and stay buisy for the rest of your day/night) edit: Great list, a couple of the tunes on this list is songs that i've forgotten over the years, so i got a little raid down memory lane with this random youtube recomendation!
Nas and Em are often included in many pple's top 5, and it's clear to see why from such a list. Besides their eclectic choice of words, they have very creative ways of delivering stories. On that note, Phonetap - Nas & AZ should have been seriously considered on this list... Honorable Mentions: Eve - Love is Blind Ludacris - Runaway Love
Nas is one of the best storytellers in hip-hop history- Rewind and I Gave You Power are mentioned but Fetus and One Love are amazing also. I'd say Eminem's honorable mentions are Kim and '97 Bonnie and Clyde.
The song that paints the most Vivid pictures in my mind is "Wet Dreamz" by J. Cole, the way he describes All facets of young seduction is on another level
Andres verse on Sixteen is in my opinion top 3. Such a powerful verse that provides food for thought throughout, has clever wordplay, punchlines, and much more. Let Nas Down by J Cole could be on here as well, along with Int'l Player's Anthem, one of the greatest songs of all time.
#1 and #2 truly in their spot. I never heard Nas's "Rewind" before today, but holy shit does this need to be in a Top 3. Also - Joyner Lucas with "Ross Capicchioni" deserves a Top 5 in my book
Great watch. I was really surprised when I didnt see Uncommon valor, RA went hard. I wish I could go back and rewatch dance with the devil for the first time again, bone chilling song
I remember when someone introduced me to Dance with the Devil shortly after it first came out and it stuck with me ever since. My YT Recommended suggested this video and this is the first song I thought of. Glad ya'll respected the song by placing it at Number 1. Also most of the other songs are ones I would've considered too. Glad to see we're on the same page! Thanks for this list.
Dance with the devil had to be number one. It still gives me goosebumps even after all these years. The greatest storytelling rap of all time. Hands down
Overrated* Dude was talented, but EVERYONE & their f*ckin grandma say "But bro have you ever heard THIS crazy ass song????" like they know the secret to the twist so they think I'm supposed to gasp, cry, piss myself, etc. Its a cool song I guess but I.T. did not intend for it to be beaten to death like it was a pop song on the radio. It's supposed to be special for those true fans of Hip-Hop that really filter for this stuff, not some overplayed b.s. that my mom even knows.
Eminem - My Darling should top the list. Totally underrated. The enjoyment of fame and power he gets from playing the rap game, the persona he creates for it, the denial of getting in too deep with the devil and till the last part where he syncs with the devil to become one again. So many layers to the song.
Great list! Stan is my number 1 Dear Mama 2 Followed by Lodi Dodi 3 BUT There is so so many good storytelling raps it’s hard to choose definitively. I will say tho that I prefer Juicy as my fav Biggie storytelling track
Bro I'm so glad you put "Dance With The Devil" at number 1, it's so underrated and I probably wouldn't know about it either if it wasn't for this school project. That last line "So when the devil wants to dance with you, you better say never because a dance with the devil might last you forever." It's so good bruh. I know there's a part 2, but I think if the song just ended here it would be soo good. I have a version on my phone where it ends at that line and ending on such a cold line really makes you think 💯
This might be a sleeper but Ab-Soul’s Book of Soul never fails to hit me. For anyone who don’t know how much of a masterpiece that song is, please check that out
Wow. Never heard your #1 pick, but it's a good one. I had 4 of your 10 on my list. I would add: +Mr Cheeks-Renee +Ghostface-All That I Got Is You +Geto Boys-Mind Playing Tricks on Me... ..and I would agree to add Nas' "I Gave You Power".
B.I.G. does it for me, because it incorporates a good flow, word play and was funny as hell. 20 years later people still debating the facts of the story. Then there were 'Gimme da loot' 'Warning' and 'Your Nobody till Somebody Kills you'.
love The Warning, the whole first album is a masterpiece. second one too. cant imagine all the tracks we never got to hear because he was cut so short.
I feel like The Way I Am deserves an honorable mention. How deep Eminem went into the stress and struggles of things people go through such as celebrities, specifically in the music industry, hits different every time you listen to it.
A song that doesn't get nearly enough mention is "My Summer Vacation" by Ice Cube. Cube chronicles him and his crew leaving home in LA to St Louis to sell drugs and in the end getting caught and locked up. The details in the song really puts you there with him as he details the events that eventually leads to his and his crews undoing.....
Mine will definitely consist of - Nas - I gave you power (Best of All time) - Geto Boys - Mind playing tricks on me (Second best of all time) -Common - Fifth Story -Lupe - Hip Hop saved my life, The cool, He say she say - Tupac - Brenda's got a baby
I knew "dance with the devil" had to be the top story; I held my breath throughout the whole song. It's very dark, but a captivating way of portraying it and flawless execution. "Stan" and a couple others are great as well, but don't even come close to the masterpiece of Immortal Technique. Awesome list by the way.
We both share the same perspective of the song my first time listening to the songs verse it was breathtaking when he got to the part of as he was staring into the eyes of his own mother I stood up from the bed no song had made me felt that way
My list 1. I Gave you Power- Nas. In my opinion the most creative song ever 2. Dance with the Devil - Immortal Technique 3. Rewind- Nas 4. On the Run- Kool G Rap 5. Mind playing tricks on me- Geto Boys
Sing about me I'm dying of thirst should be number 1, he uses insane wordplay and flow describe two different true stories, then raps it up with his own perspective talking about how he never meant to harm anyone by publicizing the story, and that Dave was like his own brother. He also raps long bars with just a single breath, and spends a full 6 minutes to tell this story in such detail
It's one of kendrick's best, and definitely deserves a spot in the top 10. I might even put it top 3. But I personally agree with atleast Dancing with the Devil, and Stan being above it..
@@format9802 But it has the impact that Sing About Me doesn't. The story of the modern day toxic fan translated into everyday nomenclature, but also a depiction of something that transcends time. Its idol worship and obsession.
@@format9802 But it made the term 'Stan', which I hear everyone from my friends, to my siblings, to my aunts and uncles say. It's become one of the most used terms, and even got into the Oxford dictionary. While it wasn't as 'lyrical', that's kindve the point. He wanted to make a track with conversational rap, where you don't even focus on the rhymes but what he's saying through them
You right, in fact the only song better than sing about me is i gave you power...Stan is great but not even close...it's 12 minutes of pure greatness.. incredible art...
Stan has had an historical impact unlike any song of its era, emotionally and culturally. It is a poem, and better than DWTD, though I think it is up for debate as it pertains to the lyrics and skill at work in each, to each his own. "You Never Know" by Immortal Technique is a good one, too. I just think they lack the poetry and resonance Stan has, but art has different ways of making different people feel. Dance With the Devil is proof that pure storytelling has a place in hip hop and there's an audience for it still. Nice list!
Bruh I have the backwards E inked on my skin and it’s not even close Dance with the devil is miles and miles ahead of any other story telling song including Stan. What did cube say? Ya done run a 100 miles but you still got one to go. Well all the others still got a thousand to go.

@@nickkerr5714 They are different types of songs. One is purely a story. The other is a lyrical track about self reflection, coming to terms with reality and time. I also think bad guy is top 5 eminem songs defo underrated
You could populate this entire list with songs off Atmosphere’s “when life gives you lemons you paint that shit gold” album. Damn near every song is from a different persons perspective, telling tales of a homeless man stalking his estranged daughter, an old rockstar falling into drugs and losing relevance, a dude just seeing someone on the street that reminds him of his late father, or a single mother fighting through insane odds to raise her kids alone. It’s all pedestrian stories of people struggling through life and it’s all so well written.
When i saw stan on the 2. place I thought you were crazy but when i heard dance with the devil I changed my mind man this song absolutely deserves No.1 spot by far
These songs that could have easily been in this top ten list: 1) Love's Gonna Getcha - Boogie Down Productions 2) My Summer Vacation - Ice Cube 3) A Minute To Pray And A Second To Die - Scarface 4) Lyrics Of Fury - Eric B. and Rakim 5) Road To The Riches - Kool G. Rap 6) Night Of The Living Baseheads - Public Enemy 7) Friends - Whodini 8) The Art Of Storytelling - OutKast ft. Slick Rick 9) Murder Was The Case - Snoop Dogg 10) Dream Shatterer - Big Pun

I used to think Stan was the greatest/darkest rap song until I heard DWTD, I was shaken to the core after listening to that
That's how I'm feeling right now hearing it for the first time, like holy sh*t
This video was my introduction to it. It's two in the morning and that shit had me staring at the lyrics while a tear rolled down my cheek. DWTD probably has the most horrifyingly grafic storytelling of all time. I wouldn't want to listen to it ever again either.
That’s why I have forgotten about it, my mind just refuses to remember it, it’s traumatic
idk what it is with Nas but the way he tells stories is crazy. it's so easy to understand Nas through his music. Nas and slick Rick are the best storytellers Immortal Technique hella underrated too

Eminem: Kim

Mobb Deep: Trife life (I like the first one better imo)
Nas: Undying love
Mobb Deep: Cradle to the grave
Lloyd banks: Southside story
Biggie: Niggas bleed
Nas: The set up
Nas: Shootouts
Eminem: Castle &Arose
Kendrick Lamar's Good kid maad city (pretty much the entire album is a story lol amazing.)
Hopsin: Sexy Cyber
Big Pun:Fast money
Biggie: Gimme the loot
Eazy E: Nobody move
Snoop Dogg: Murder was the case
Snoop Dogg: Lodi Dodi
Game: The Good, the Bad, the Ugly
Ice Cube: My summer vacation
Eminem: As the world turns
Jay Z: Friend or foe '96
Nas: Shoot em up
Eminem: '97 Bonnie and Clyde
Lord Finesse: Food for thought
Game: Ol' English
Gucci Mane & La Chat: Stick em up
Nas: Small world
Aand that's all I can think of rn lol. Check em out if u like story telling songs.
Niggas Bleed should have been the BIG song here and Shootouts for Nas.. also agree about the first Trife Life..

When I saw 1989 I was like damn that’s fucking crazy!! Heard the song many times just didn’t know it was 89.
Immortal Technique didn’t actually do it. The person who was actually there was a cellmate of Tech’s.

Lesley by Dave is an absolute masterpiece. Remember the first time I heard it I was trying not to get emotional but even now I still get goosebumps every time I hear it.
I didn't know how good 2pac was at storytelling until I heard Brenda's baby...Crazy! He was so young... R.I.P 2PAC

Gotta agree, teardrops and close caskets very similar to Brenda's got a baby...
With both those at the ending u gotta be like:" what the fuck!"
J Cole doesn't get the respect he deserves from old school heads. His storytelling on wet dreamz is original, insightful, poetic, and extremely accurate. Coming from an old school head.
Jolene is arguably the best lyricist today (Kendrick possibly) and I'm considered an old head now. 46 y/o
Probably my favorite rap lyric. Just shows how life is supposed to be lived, not caring about stuff that everyone goes through.

Its crazy how with all these legendary spngs, and legendary rappers, Dance With the Devil is still the best by a pretty wide margin.

I remember being in the 4th grade and listening to my friends Walkman and hearing Dance with the devil for the first time. It scared me so bad I didn’t finish it. Nas and Em are often included in many pple's top 5, and it's clear to see why from such a list. Besides their eclectic choice of words, they have very creative ways of delivering stories.
