  • We've owned our Ford Super Duty F350 7.3L crew cab long bed with the Godzilla engine for 1 full year. We've put 10,000 miles of heavy use on this truck, towing a 5th wheel RV, boat, cargo trailer, and hauling mulch and supplies. We've taken long road trips, and short drives around town. In this video, we talk about our experience so far with the Ford truck and our thoughts after one year (10,000 miles) taking our used truck up to 29,000 total miles so far.

    Nothing like a wife that doesn’t mind calling you out! That’s how you know she loves you!
    What I learned:
    1:the extended bed supports the extended range tank.
    2: seasonal driving patterns aren’t good for diesel engines
    3: the extended bed adds
    maneuvering capability when towing
    4: I like your channel

    An excellent review you two did on your 2020 F350. I do like that you get a larger 48 gallon tank with a long bed but as you all said, the long bed had to tone issues when it comes to parking and maneuvering and tighter spaces.
    We have a 22 F350 lariat and having leather interior has been great. I personally would not enjoy cloth interior.
    We have almost 7000 miles on our 7.3 and it has been doing around 13 miles per gallon overall. Are unloaded highway driving gets as close to 15 and our towing with a 14,000 pound fifth wheel put it around 8 miles to a gallon.
    So far at 7000 miles we’ve had no issues with the motor or the transmission or really anything else for that matter. We did do an oil entire rotation at 5000 and plan to do it again every 5000 miles.
    Good luck and safe travels

    I have a 2021 F250 7.3 XLT. I have the same lights as you and they are the worst headlights of any vehicle I have owned over 40 years. They are so bad, I think they are dangerous. I just recently installed LED bulbs for the headlights, fog lights and reverse lights. What a difference! I completely agree about cleaning the chrome wheels, it's a pain. Overall, I love the truck and I have had zero problems with anything for 47,000 miles with at least 75% of those miles carrying a slide-in truck camper. The truck has been flawless and handles the camper very well.

    • @PurpleCollarLife
      @PurpleCollarLife  11 месяцев назад

      These aren't the absolute best headlights I've ever driven with (2017 Jeep Winter Edition with LED healights takes that prize) - but they're much better than the headlights we had on the 2005 F350, my 2010 Ford Ranger, or our 2009 Ford Expedition.
      That's good to hear that you've had no problems at 47,000 miles! What kind of side-in camper do you have?

    Good video. I’m learning a lot about that new Ford F350 with a 7.3 L V8 in it. I’m leaning towards a gas truck to pull my two car trailer instead of a diesel so I don’t have to deal with all of the emission problems that diesels come with.

    Exact same as my '17 - 6.2 except the engine. Same color/chrome etc. I'm only getting less than 6k per year so far and I was quickly reminded that I don't like chrome ...or rather, cleaning chrome. Trying to decide whether to swap this truck I LOVE out for one with a black package before too much value is lost. I use Meguires Wheel cleaner and then an hour later, I use Armer All Outlast chrome protector. Went from cleaning every few days to once every month or two. Safe travels !

      We were a bit worried about the delaminating issues we heard about on the forums. So we did the oil analysis tests (we have videos about that). It all turned out okay, and we’re happy with the truck so far. It’s plenty powerful enough for our needs, and is nice to not have to deal with all the diesel issues we experienced in our previous PowerStroke truck.

    If you set up your trailer length less than 33 feet, your blind spot monitors will still work with a trailer! But if you set your trailer length to 35 feet it shuts off your blind spot monitoring. My trailer is also longer than 33 feet, but having BSM for 33 feet behind my truck is awesome.

    Thanks for this video. I currently have a 2023 F350 with the 6.7 Hi-Output diesel and it's overkill for our 7k trailer. It runs great so far but I have also been curious with the gasser and would consider trading in for this one day. I have the same issue with the blind spot monitoring not working with trailers connected (fine for me) but it is annoying that I am reminded of this twice. I feel like one notification would be enough to let me know blind spot monitoring doesn't work while connected.

    I have a 2020 F-250 XLT crew cab short box with the 7.3 gas FX4 pkg, tow pkg and snow plow pkg. I use the truck as my daily driver and as my personal work truck. For 3 seasons it tows 16000lbs every day ( conventional towing - not 5th wheel or gooseneck ) and all winter it has a 900lb plow on the front plowing snow. The engine and transmission have been bulletproof so far for me ( 42000km ). Only issue I have had was the front axle seals tore out last Fall, but that was fixed under warranty by Ford. I love the truck but do find it thirsty when towing over 14000lbs or when pushing snow.

    Very nice truck and great review! I've had several diesels, and although I like them I don't need a diesel and the 7.3 will be perfect for what I need but hard to find. Without knowing what issues you had with the 6.0 i would imagine it was the standard common problems. I had one but actually wish i just bulletproofed and kept it. It was an 06 F350 lariat.

    • @PurpleCollarLife

      If I could do it all over again - I'd probably bullet-proof our 2005 F350 6.0 diesel early on. We dumped SOOOOOO much money into that truck. The body and frame were still great after 17 years, but we just couldn't afford to keep throwing money at that engine. Here's the video about it. ruclips.net/video/b4oJeIHEgT0/видео.html

      @PurpleCollarLife Thanks so much for the reply. Back in 2017, I was towing my camper from Colorado to LI where I grew up, and the HPOP went out, just outside of Indianapolis. Had to get truck towed to a Ford dealer and camper towed to the hotel parking lot. Stuck there for a week and 5k dollars later. After I got home, I traded it in, but I wish I didn't and did the bulletproof.

  • @davida.p.9911
    @davida.p.9911 11 месяцев назад +2

    With the more options, of course, the higher the price. I've seen some trucks selling for WELL over $100,000 and they are nice, BUT, way too expensive. I saw a Chevy Silverado, 3500 High Country package for $135,000 and I nearly fell out of my chair. I personally would just buy an older truck and use the money to fix it up rather than worry about computers and all the little problems that can go wrong on the newer ones. The F350 is a great truck and it's awesome that you've gotten many miles of great use from it, Chad and Jennifer. It's a beautiful truck, no question about it. 👍 I recommend some carpeted floor mats for the slipping problem. Or some Weather Tech floor mats. Thanks for sharing!!

    • @PurpleCollarLife
      @PurpleCollarLife  11 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks for the tips! We've currently got the Ford Super Duty floor mats - but we're considering upgrading to the WeatherTech. We've had WeatherTech in other vehicles and they really are nice - perfect contour to the floor so that they can't slip around and protect the flooring.
      You're right about the prices. I can't imagine paying over 100,000 for a truck. That's too much.

    I just ordered the 2024 F-350 Lariat tremor Edition 7.3 L Godzilla...... should be getting it in middle of August... the only reason I'm going with the 2024 is because they apparently fixed the lifter issue in 2024 versus 2020 through 2023... I test drove a 2020 7.3 L and then went back 3 weeks later to go sign the paperwork and another customer took it out for a drive and the freaking piston went through the whatever the hell they did to blow the engine up and I am so glad I didn't buy that cuz I did not know about the lifter issue thing until he told me

    I am a Ford truck fan, and I love the concept of the Godzilla 7.3 engine. I just don't like the mpg that these big engines get.
    I currently own a very low mileage 2018 XLT F150, (26,800 miles) that I bought new. I commonly get 22.3 to 22.8 mpg on the interstate.

    • @PurpleCollarLife
      @PurpleCollarLife  3 месяца назад

      That's the downside to the massive displacement of the 7.3 - it will drink more fuel. Even with the 10 speed transmission, you just can't get the same mileage as a smaller truck (like a 1/2 ton) with a smaller displacement engine. Thanks for watching!

    Hey, something i left out of my comment was the 7.3l engine oil changes NEED to be 4800 miles or less no matter what type of oil. One of the FORD techs told me that. Use the ford oil filters. Make sure they blow out the filter and wipe threads before filling with oil.

This is new to me as I realize I have to trade in my old 02 F150 for something bigger… I would love this truck… only in the shorter bed… I wonder if the bigger fuel tank is an option ( I know a company Transfer Flow makes them… but they are 3K)…one other question are all 250s called super duty? Thanks again from Eastern PA Danny

    • @PurpleCollarLife
      @PurpleCollarLife  6 месяцев назад

      As far as stock from the factory - the larger tank is only available on the long bed. It does feel quite a bit longer than the short bed - but the additional fuel capacity is better suited for our travel needs. Thanks for watching from the other side of PA! I'm glad you found our channel.

    How do the dogs enter and exit the truck? Also, are the dogs protected by a security restraint system during travel in case of a high speed crash and are the dogs securely restrained from disturbing or distracting the driver while in transit for safety measures? Please install these safety features for the dogs so they can have safety belt restraint system. I didn’t hear anything about that, only heard about some kind of “dog hammock” thing.
    To your credit however, the dogs aren’t simply placed in the bed of the truck loose to suffer sever trauma in case of a crash, but rather placed with you inside the vehicle.
    There are dog restraint systems used integrated safety devices with the seat belts of practically any vehicle.
    At the end of the video there are a number of features you both say would be nice to enjoy in the truck but don’t forget a restraint system for the pups too.❤😊

    Good Evening To Both Of You, I'm happy that you get back safely from your trip last week 👍😉👌The only thing I like about automatic transmissions are the ones made by Allison Transmission, other than that it will be with a manual transmission only.😇👍 For me, renting a truck for 2-3 weeks per year is much cheaper for me. I like the comment from your Wife ( I wonder why myself ) about you buying Ford😉👍 If I had the need and the money, I will buy Ram 2500 with Cummings Diesel engine with a manual transmission, or a GM 2500 gas engine. In the RCAF, we have so much problems with our FORD trucks it is no fun at all Diesel and GAS engines,,, but again truck are so crazy expensive,,,, renting 2-3 weeks per year is the best. Cheers

    I found towing a camper with a gas engine was nearly impossible to fuel up because there is no gas fuel pump for these rigs. You go where the cars go to get gas. So I sold it and tow a 41’ 5th wheel with diesel and fuel up at truck stops. So much easier than looking for gas pumps that are accessible.

      We did experience this on our trip to the upper section of Michigan. That was definitely something we never had to worry about when towing across the country with our diesel F350. It would go anywhere the big trucks went.

      In Michigan towing with a bumper pull is not an issue gas station wise (at least not for us and our 34’ bumper pull). The added heights of the 5th wheels does add an extra consideration for height for sure.

    Like you; I did not want a diesel. Too many expensive issues, let alone $10k upfront cost. I ordered my '21- F350 XLT with the 7.3l & 3.73 rear gears. I bought it to tow our 8400# tt. I ordered it in the X-tra cab, 6.5' bed for the shorter wheel base. Much easier to drive to the store as well as back into tight spots. It also fits in the garage. I did not buy it for gas mileage. although I have averaged 10.3mpg's thru ot the PNW up & down a lot of large grades & mtns. On a 4200 mile trip I got 10.3mpg's & traveling buddy with a diesel and similar tt got 1-1.5 better. He was paying $0.50 -$1 more per gal + DEF. I had no issues keeping up (or down) and hills & mtns with him. I've had ZERO mechanical issues. I change my oil every 3 - 4k miles myself.

    I think the 7.3 Godzilla is the best motor still produced (besides The 6.2l gas) I will stick with my 6.2s as they tow 15k around fine. However I can see where the 7.3 would be nice. What gear ratio do you have ?

    • @PurpleCollarLife

      I think the 7.3 engine should be a great engine! Lots of power and simple design that should last for a long time. We have the 3.73 gears.

      Hard to believe the 6.2L can tow 15K. I have a 6.2L in an F150 Platinum w/3.73 and the sticker says 11.1K max. I know its a 1/2 ton and all and I did tow once 11K, power not as issue but its a 1/2 ton... 15K would be really pushing it in the mountains here.

    Ford has a twin turbo 3.5 v-6. why doesn't Ford have a TURBO v-8. seems like it would be a great option. I have the 6.7 and it actually seems to get great MPG for a big 1 ton truck (23mpg) unloaded, but the diesels are so complex and have so much on them now with the government regulations I worry it just won't last. def, dpf, etc.

    • @PurpleCollarLife
      @PurpleCollarLife  9 месяцев назад +1

      While I know some people who have really liked that twin-turbo V6 in their F150s, I also know some people who have not. One of the things I liked about the 7.3 Godzilla is the fact that it's a proven pushrod design that should last, without additional complexity. Any time you go from naturally aspirated to forced airflow (through turbo or supercharger) it adds complexity and potential problems to the long life of an engine (in my personal opinion and experience).
      That's like you said with the diesels - additional complexity have added to their problems. The older diesel engines (before all that extra stuff) lasted forever and were highly reliable.

Capable 4x4, leather, NAV, the ecoboost has been a wonderful powerplant with regular maintenance and a fist full of spark plugs. It's had a 5 star tune for over 70,000 miles. I can absolutely see why you would say that. But we do have the 100,000 mile warranty to cover any engine or transmission issues if they do pop up again. And we were able to get this truck when we needed it, having most of every feature that we wanted, for significantly less than new, with a better warranty than new.
