I can feel your frustration!! I bought a new F250 on 7/7/23 and it idled on 7/8/23 due to a bad NOx sensor . I was 11 hours from home and had to rent a car to continue on our trip . I thought the same thing about reliability. I was worried about my 10 year old GMC not being reliable but that’s what I’m back driving now. Good luck !!!
Good video. I have the same truck in the short bed that I drive for work. I’ve had this exact issue twice, both times shifting into reverse just slightly before coming to a complete stop. Now I do a one-count before shifting. It has been 20,000 miles since it happened last and not an issue since. 81,500 on the truck currently. I work with electronics daily and sometimes they just do weird things and need to be turned off and turned back on. Luckily I’m my case, this was exactly what mine needed. Did no harm internally or to any modules
Thanks for sharing! This might be exactly the cause - as I’ve now seen several comments and emails where this has happened to other people (not coming to a full and complete stop before shifting). I’m pretty sure I did stop and then shift because I specifically remember a bicyclist behind me that I had to wait for - but who knows. Thanks for the info. Congrats on 81,500 on your truck!!
Had a recall on my F250 for DEF sensor. Ford would not authorize the repair unless the sensor failed. Of course mine failed on the ALCAN highway! 78,000 miles and has had 3 back windows put in, computer update, fan clutch, 2 right rear tail lights, DEF sensor and a water pump all installed under warranty. I feel your pain!
Thanks for sharing your experience! I’d love to hear more about the trip up the Alcan highway sometime! I’ve been considering that as a future vacation with the RV. But it looks like that trip can be rough on the rig (and take a lot of vacation days from here in PA).
Well that sucks, Chad. Hope you're home safe and sound, and the dealer is able to provide you with something better than "I'm guessing there was some kind of issue in the trans..." Look forward to the next update.
Dang Chad, that sure stinks. I have a '17 F-250 with the 6.2 and 6 speed trans. that I have had zero issues with and we tow our 13k lb. 5th wheel with. I was considering getting the 6.7 Power Stroke with the 10 speed but after all the videos of people having issues with them, I had to rethink that idea. I hope the dealer figures this out for you guys and put this issue behind you. Please keep us posted. Good luck!!!!
Also a 2017 owner here, F350 Lariat crew short bed 6.7. We bought ours second hand in 2020, second owners. I know the 6.2s have the 6R100 so not exactly apples-apples, but we got handed a dud that we later found out had had a transmission overhaul at 20k miles by the original owner.
Watching this trans failure video. We just bought a 2023 f250 with the 7.3 gas Oct. 3,2023. With less than 3 days old and 200mi. pulling a 8000# 5th wheel camper, we stopped at an Alabama rest area for 15-minute break and the truck would not restart. After 3hrs of cool down it did start. Dealer had to replace the starter by default because they could not figure out what caused it. After replacing the starter they did notice it smelt burnt, slung the grease out and the end bearing looked overheated. We will be taking that same trip again for Thanksgiving hoping and praying no more failures.
You’re not gonna believe this since I posted and you answered I went out to warm up the truck for a potential snowstorm and the check engine light is on again
We have pretty much the same truck (for the same reason) and was kinda bummed to see this.I hope for the best for you Chad, really glad to see you didnt need a tow truck.
It made it home flawlessly. Engine and transmission ran great. I think this was just some weird computer learning issue. I think the night before the constant drive speeds between 2 and 15 MPH around the campground (slowing down for speed bumps, etc.) really messed up the learning of the transmission.
@@treeamigo8447 you mean a fiat/peugeot made in mexico? Would that be with the amazing 68rfe trash tranny or the toyota 6 speed? Either way just pure trash.
Computers! 😅 .......I hope you, Jennifer and Olive make it home safe. And hopefully that problem can be fixed ASAP. Today's vehicles are overpriced and underperform way more than they should. I still remember when a vapor lock was all you had to worry about. Thanks for sharing and keep us informed, Chad!
We made it home without any problems at all. Shifting was normal up and down our hills and valleys here in PA. We were just talking about how my little Ranger and Jennifer's Expedition (2010 models) rarely need anything other than brakes and oil changes. And the same with my old 1983 and 1990 Bronco (still wishing I had those back!) - no problems ever.
Good reminder here for others to add the RV package to their AAA membership. If you break down while towing and don't have that add on, they will NOT tow your trailer.
I have a 2020 f450 6.7 with 10 speed that has been flawless. I did have two recalls on it . One was about a year ago involving the planetary 1 gear . The latest was a few months ago and it involved the planetary 4 gear . Never had any issues with it but had recall work done . I pull a 40’ 5thwheel that’s weighs in at 24 k with no issues.
i feel ya brother and understand the frustration. i was going to comment and say the same thing about disconnecting the battery. its ridiculous all the electronics they have now and i think its more of a pain in the rear end than it does help, in most cases. As long as the transmission fluid is nice red and not all burned up almost fishy smelling send it bro. in all seriousness keep us posted. the truck is damn nice aint no denying that i just got a 1/2 ton
We made it home without any issue. Everything worked great. I think this was just a fluke computer issue and hopefully now we’re back to normal. Time will tell. Thanks for watching!
Good Evening Sir, ( full watch ) I'm very sorry about the problem and the stress that cause to both of you 😢Your dealer did gave you a very good distance service 🧐👍 Best Luck 👍👌😇Cheers 🍻
I could here and see the frustration. Not something you want to deal with anytime with a newer vehicle and then add on the stress of hauling the camper home. I hope y'all made it home safely today??? Nothing like ending your vacation on a stressful journey home as well.
Certainly we were frustrated. But we made it home easily today without any issues. The truck ran flawlessly. I think this was a fluke computer glitch (fingers crossed). But I’m going to take it to the dealership this week and have it all checked over. If not for any other reason - just to document that we had it all checked out after having an issue. Thanks for watching!
The dealership isn’t gonna do anything they’re gonna tell you they did but that truck will be pretty much setting where you park it at when you dropped it off
I had that same issue happen on my 2021 F-350 7.3 10 speed. But I think it was possibly my fault when I didn’t come to a complete stop when shifting into reverse. The same wrench 🔧 light came up , my Ford Pass app showed exactly what yours did. I also lost reverse. I turned off the truck . Let it sit for a minute & turned it back on . Everything was ok and that was nearly two years and 15K miles ago. No issues since . Now I make damn sure I come to a complete stop before shifting into reverse. Lol 😂
Thanks for sharing your experience! I certainly will make sure that I come to a full and complete stop before changing gears also. I don't think that caused our issue because I had to stop completely for a bicycle to go around me before backing up - but it's probably good to know that you had the exact same issue and have hadn't had a problem with it again since. We really appreciate you letting us know. We made it home without any concerns. Shifting was all back to normal, reverse worked as it should, and mileage was in the normal range.
@@PurpleCollarLife I recently bought a couple of acres in the White Mountains 🏔️ of NH. It’s gonna be my campsite so I’m gonna be towing a camper there like yourself! Looking forward to it! That’s why I bought the truck among other tasks it performs. Trying to decide between bumper pull campers or 5th wheel like yours ? My truck is a SuperCab with the 6’5” bed. 4.30 gears .
This is exactly why I maintain my old trucks. Too much computer BS on newer vehicles that are intermittent and will leave you stranded. Hope it doesn’t do it again!
Thanks for watching! We made it home without issue. I think it was probably just like you said - a computer glitch. Who knows the next time it will pop up.
@@PurpleCollarLife Amen to that. Have had my 14 6.7 for almost 10 years now and with the exception of possibly needing a $500 valve body I can install myself at some point in the future, shes doing great. Glad you made it home without issue! From the Reversing issue by the way, that has happened to me and COULD be your valve body failing. I would have it looked at. You should definitely have that trans serviced as well if it never has been. The lifetime fill is BS. Sometimes all they want is fresh fluid and filter and are golden.
Man that sucks, sorry to hear this is happening to you. We specifically picked up our truck with a manual transmission to avoid these newer transmissions.
Sorry to hear you are having troubles, I hope that my 10 speed does not fail. You are towing 2k more than me and I'm getting a lousy 8.4 mpg while towing. My 7.3 towes with no problems but wow what a difference in fuel mileage. Mine has a set of 3.55 😢
Thanks for sharing your experiences with your F350. I purchased a 23’ F250 with the 7.3 to replace a low mileage 13’ Duramax that I really enjoyed, but was having emissions related problems….one problem which compelled us to take it to a dealer while on a camping trip. I’m really curious about the dealer’s ability to connect to your truck remotely. As I watched your post I suspected a computer related issue and I’ll be checking back on your site to learn of the diagnosis after you take it to the dealer. Thanks again for your posts!
Thanks for watching! We’ll keep you posted. No further issues so far. The dealership being able to connect remotely was amazing. It uses the communications capability of the vehicle (just like the Ford Pass app does for starting the truck, unlocking it, checking the fuel level, etc.).
The tsb is for a reprogram on the trans and ecu. They aren’t bad transmissions but unfortunately you got a first year 10 speed. I run a 23 f550 with the 7.3 and 10 speed and so far “knock on wood” it’s been dead nuts reliable. For context I’m normally hauling 12-18k daily with the truck. I’d get it in for the tsb and I’m pretty sure she’ll be good to go after that.
You may want to address your battery on the drivers side. Its leaking acid and will end up getting into the cables let alone corroding any metal around it. I would see if they would replace the battery and the hold down . Make sure they find out if its just and battery case issue and not an over charging issue. I was a Ford Tech for many years and have seen this issue many times and most of the time most just over look it.
Great catch! I didn’t notice it when shooting the video, but did notice that during editing. I sprayed some of that red protective spray on it. But I’ll have the dealer take a look at that too.
2017 owner here, F350 Lariat crew short bed 6.7. Our story has a lot of similarities. We bought ours second hand in 2020 and are the second owners. It had ~75k on the odo at the time. It wasn't obvious at the time but the 6R140 was bad and we didn't find out until towing our 14k lbs trailer up and down mountain interstates and highways far from home. 4th gear was shot and the transmission and engine would overheat, and we couldn't figure out why. We had towed light (~4000-5000 lbs) with it and it drove fine while never overheating even up mountain grades. It was likely a bad original unit because, after lengthy research during the time the truck was in a Ford dealer's bay for 5 weeks to a total of $11,600 for replacement, the original owner had to have the transmission overhauled under warranty at 20k miles. We didn't have the factory warranty because the truck was over 60k miles. In the near 3 years since getting an entirely new 6R140, it's been great. We should have gotten it inspected first, right? Well, trucks both new and used were being sold sight unseen (which is still pretty much the case now) and we had to grab one with the capacities we needed for 5W heavy towing when we had a shot. Waiting for a Ford dealer to be available for a full inspection would've meant waiting at least 2-3 weeks, during which time the truck would've been sold. So, our experience is how these problems get resolved the hard way. 😐
I have 2021 F250 with the 7.3 and 10 speed transmission with 115,000 miles on it and still running strong weighing 10,000 lbs truck and tools every day.
Hello from Ouray, Colorado! Ughhh...I am sorry you had to endure this mechanical issue; especially on a newer vehicle!! My 2021 F350 godzilla just has 1 transmission quirk. It is the shifting in and out of 5th gear when not towing. Ha...I used to fly a Brazilian made regional airline jet, the Embraer 145 (you maybe have been on them; it has 1 seat on the left side of the aisle and 2 on the right). Our running joke for it was Embraer stood for " Every Mechanical breakdown requires an electrical restart", i.e. turning it completely off, and then back on. Of course, we couldn't do that when flying. But, we certainly did when loading passengers. And low and behold, it worked! That is awesome the dealership can do a remote engine scan!! Did you have to have the electrical system on the truck turned on; or they could do it with everything turned off? We are getting ready to do a 800 mile tow with out travel trailer down to Tucson AZ for 2 months. We are not enjoying shoveling snow all of the time here in CO, so will try out relocating for a bit. I will have to airline back to support my boss's travels for the first month. But, the plane will be in its annual maintenance for the second month! Safe travels!
Thanks for watching from Colorado! I think I’d much rather be in an automobile where the “electrical restart” was recently used to clear an issue than in an aircraft! :) The dealership was able to remotely check the truck without the truck being turned on. I’m not sure how it works - but they got all the information while it truck was just sitting in the camp site. Enjoy your snow bird trip to AZ! :)
My 08 Tundra was a good truck, but wasn’t perfect. Got tired of waiting for them to make a diesel model, so went with a ‘12 Ram. Looking at a F350 w/ 7.3, but these types of videos make me worry, esp dropping 70k+ on a base level truck.
I've been saying that since I bought my 08 Tundra LOL....they haven't listened, then they joined the undersized turbo engine crowd and said forget it won't buy another Toyota with the route they took...at least they could have kept the V8 as an optional engine, but to do away with it altogether was terrible, even Ford was smart enough to keep the 5.0L Coyote V8 as an F150 option.
@@PurpleCollarLife Well the Tundra wasn't exactly the best for 1/2 use either, my 08 Ate the front differential bearings twice, and rear axle bearings twice, and the most work it ever got was a 5-7k trailer once in a while. Honestly my 08 Ford Explorer handles the same trailer/load better than my 08 Tundra did....the only thing was the 5.7L V8 of course had more power, but the transmission in the Tundra could never make up its mind what gear to pick, I just got to the point where I'd drop it to 4th in the mountains and leave it there. The front independent suspension in the Tundra was terrible too, always seemed like it was in the shop for alignment troubles that they never could really pinpoint a fix for...and my truck wasn't lifted and it didn't have oversized tires on it either...must have gotten a Friday evening closing shift, or Monday morning hang over shift build LOL...although they had TSBs for the axle bearings and front diff issues, they seemed to have got that sorted out a couple years later...but I went with an HD truck instead and honestly now when I tow its a much more relaxed drive won't go back to a 1/2 ton.
@@wildbill23c Agree! I put almost 200k on mine. The 5.7 was burning oil, front left and right bearings were a pain to change out and the trans was the worst about hunting and slipping. Rear end was fine, interior was fine, but after having 5 Toyotas, I was ready to get rid of it. It towed a few 10k low boy trips, pulled a F250 out of Texas clay, but it was far from perfect. On small washboard dirt roads that had tractor gravel laid, the bed would flex so much it chipped paint and I couldn’t go faster than 20-25 mph. I am meticulously anal about caring for my vehicles, but it was turning into a love hate relationship. Heck, even the HiLux trucks abroad had a proven diesel engine, so they really lost an opportunity….
The one thing I've heard that might solve this issue is having the dealership disable the transmission "auto-learn" feature which attempts to detect/learn your driving habits. Have the dealership return the transmission shift program to the way it was when brand new and then lock-out/disable the shift pattern auto-learn feature so it will always shift the way it did when you took delivery of the truck.
@@jamesvw769not true, many people have said the dealer removed that feature for them. All they have to do is a click a button on their laptop and it’s done.
The problems happened to my F150 xlt 2022 model 12000 miles as the park pawl sensor failed. I am still stranded in Colorado over 1.5 months due to no parts available and technicians 3wks out. Rights after the sensor installed, the major shifting gear sensor failed as well. (Powertrain systems fault) Ford service have to order parts again. Definitely i will trade in this truck
Thanks for posting. You may be fortunate, in that it could just have been a software 'glitch' rather than a mechanical issue. In your interactions with other truck owners, have you found ANY 3/4 or 1 ton truck (Chevy, Ford or Ram), with ANY engine (gas or Diesel) that appears to stand out as reliable? Or, are ALL of the newer trucks more problematic than the older lineage?
It's hard to say on reliability. I've seen some owners who have had 0 issues with each of the brands. I've seen others with issues with each of the brands. I do think that it seems like the more you drive it, the less chance of issues. I've seen hot shot truckers rack up 150,000 miles without issues. But at the same times, I've seen some trucks used daily that end up with problems with the engine or the transmission. You just never know I guess.
Disconnect the 12v batteries, let it sit, then reconnect them. It may temporarily clear the issue, but still plan to get it into the shop. I have seen lots of strange issues like this that get reset and cleared like this. Good luck getting the camper home. Going with another brand doesn't fix it. GM has the same issues with that 10sp, and Ram's with the 68rfe is a problem too. However I understand the heavy duty trans in the Ram is supposed to be pretty reliable, but requires more routine maint.
We made it home without any problems. It towed spectacularly! it’s a strange thing when an issue like that pops up out of no where and then disappears just as quickly as it appeared. Hopefully we won’t have it happen again - but I plan on letting the shop connect the computer to it and see what info that they can see that way. I appreciate the top on the battery disconnect. That seems like a good “reboot” of a possible computer issue. Thanks for watching!
My 2012 Ram w/Cummins with the 68rfe did the same thing until I “tuned” it with an efiLive programmer. Even with the old H&S tuner, the trans tune was the best, pound per pound, change to the truck. I know that may not be an option on a new truck, but maybe after the warranty runs out?
@@PurpleCollarLife That's good news you made it home. The bad news is the blow to the confidence in the truck. I know when something like this happens it haunts me. I never have the same confidence I had before. I hope it was a one off thing.
I have a 2022 f250 6.2 with the 6 speed transmission. I tow a 7000 lbs travel trailer which the truck should handle with no problems. My truck only has 1200 miles and the torque convertor went up. After torque convertor replacement , truck was making a rubbing noise from torque convertor area, but truck function as it should. Back to ford and the installed another torque convertor along with a reman transmission. This is upsetting because now I have a new truck with a rebuilt trans. I feel you pain about the reliability of your truck. Good luck.
Thanks for sharing your experience. I don't know anyone who has the 6.2 and doesn't love it. That's a bummer about the torque converter - but hopefully that solves the problem and you are trouble-free for a long time and many more camping miles! Thank you for watching.
Thanks for the info! What channel is that? I was really surprised the struggle this truck had going between 2 and 15 mph constantly around the campground. I’d slow down for the speed bumps, and then slowly speed back up to 10-15 mph, and it just couldn’t pick a gear. Sometimes it would hold 1st WAY too long. Other times it would skip 2nd and jump to 3rd and try to speed up too fast.
@@PurpleCollarLifeThe transmission “learns” which I think is an issue that some people have. My 2020 Raptor would always shift hard into 5th gear especially when in sport mode. I heard that if you have the dealer delete the “learning” and start over it could help. It did help for the next 15k miles so far. It’s been a sold truck the first 68k miles. I bet your transmission had a brain fart 💨 in the learning. Also you need to change the fluid at 60k miles, it can only be done at the dealer.
This sucks hope it gets fully resolved, I was also looking at an F350 SD long bed with the 6.7 I do see a lot of complaints and lemon laws and campaigns to correct this issue.
Completely familiar with the area your at from some of the background businesses that u passed. Was just curious as to which dealer you were gonna take it to that was good with those transmissions. My new 2023 f550 is shuttering thru 1st gear and at idle sounds like there is a marble or bolt rolling around inside the transmission. Only has 1,100 miles on it today.
I have a 2020 F 550 7.3 10 speed. The trans is garbage at 15,000 miles. Been in the shop for a month, still don't know for sure what the actual issue is. All I know is Ford thinks they can fix it, but I doubt it's fixable. There are so many things wrong with it, when I took it in I listed what it did correctly, which was park. And from what I hear, there are cases where park won't work due to debris build up on the parking paw. 30 years of owning trucks, this is my first trans problem. I have owned a dozen or more trucks over my lifetime, all used in the lawn care/snow plowing business. And I know how to drive and maintain them. So it's very disappointing to have this failure in such a low mileage truck.
I’m wonder if you had disconnected the battery would have reset it? Great videos and now I think I will definitely go with the 7.3L over diesel. Thank you!
Disconnecting the battery may have reset the condition. That was the dealership's recommendation if we have problems moving forward. We'd need to disconnect both batteries, since the truck has 2 of the 12-volt batteries.
Ours is a 2020. I’m not sure what changes were made between the 2020 and the 2022 versions of the engine and transmission. We made it home towing the RV without issue. Thanks for watching!
That's on purpose. Here in PA with the winter salt on the roads, we oil undercoat the entire chassis of our truck to slow down the rust and wear from the salt.
Had something similar happen on my 2019 f150. It never liked cold weather. One cold morning started, put into reverse to back out of the driveway. It slammed violently, then the transmission slipped, barely pulling the truck out of the drive. Put it into drive and it slammed and slipped again eventually catching, then worked normally. No issue with the camera no wrench. However, Ford techs found codes and rebuilt the valve body with an updated kit. It’s been fine for the last 12k miles (84k) now. And still shifts kind of hard into 5th. But it’s ok so far. Thank god for extended warranty! I tow a 7,000# travel trailer regularly with it.
Thanks for sharing! I’m sure they’ll first try to flash the computer with an update. But I wouldn’t be surprised at all if there’s a valve body that gets fixed in the future.
How would you compare the overall towing experience between this truck and the previous one (powertrain, handling, etc.)? I have heard it tows pretty similar to a stock 6.0 power stroke, just needs a bit more RPMs. Thanks
Great question! I’d say the towing experience is actually VERY similar. The power level seems about the same. The MPG isn’t quite as good as our old PowerStroke 6.0, but everything else seems comparable so far. I do miss the engine braking of the diesel. I’ve never had diesel exhaust brake, but that would be nice too. The Godzilla and 10-speed definitely shift down hard when in tow-haul mode. I’ve had it shift down to 2nd gear coming down a grade at 35 mph - it sounds like it’s roaring!
yeah i use the tow haul alot on my work truck and i find the downhill shifts way to aggressive i drive it around the suburbs of pittsburgh i usaually haul around 6000 lbs@@PurpleCollarLife
Esssh - I was considering jumping back to a Super Duty diesel - 25 yrs of Fords and my 2019 was riddled with issues - went to Chev, under 60K kms, and the crank cover seal let go and I got a free second oil undercoating via engine oil. Took a week, they replaced it, but my DEF consumption is ridiculous - every two tanks of fuel, I have to add a jug of DEF. May just drive this and keep an eye on F250 issues . Good luck with the trans.
Thanks for watching and I appreciate you asking. I actually have a transmission update video that I shot about a week ago that I need to edit and post. Stay tuned - more info coming.
Quick question, I'm considering purchasing a new 2024 Ford F350 w/ the 7.3 as I'm currently driving my Toyota 2012 Tundra with a 5.7 with 82,000 miles with no issues. I purchased the Tundra new, but I want to purchase a camper and I'm considering purchasing a new F350 with a 7.3 ... Question, with what you know and have experienced with your F350, would you purchase a NEW 2024 F350??
That's a great question. I personally wouldn't consider buying a new truck (any brand) without getting the extended warranty. That's actually one of the reasons we bought a used F350 that was Ford Gold Blue Oval Certified - so that we would get the included 100,000 mile warranty. As expensive as these repairs could be in the future - I like knowing that it's covered under warranty, and not more money out of my pocket.
We bought 4- 22 F 450 7.3 gas, And had transmission issues with all of them, One is on it 3rd transmission One had lifter failure And I have been noticing metallic glitter in drain oil of all of them😢
That is not good news! Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm hoping that since I've upgraded my oil ruclips.net/video/1xGtLEvTVoE/видео.html and am doing regular oil analysis, I can decrease the odds of a catastrophic failure from the engine. The transmission, however, - I'm not sure what to do about that.
I've heard of a "recall" on the rear camera in the tailgate. I believe its for distortion. Interesting it seems like something to do with putting it in reverse. Test your batteries independently, one of them may be faulty. Voltage issues can cause intermittent drivabillty problems. And lastly you need to purchase a code scanner to scan and document codes and clear if needed to get out of a "limp in" situation. I have one in ALL our vehicles. My wife and daughter both no how to use them in case of an emergency. Please do a follow-up on what they find.
Thanks for the tips! We actually do have a code scanner in the glove box (used it all the time with our 6.0 Powerstroke issues). I never even thought of connecting it on the new truck when the problem happened. We'll keep you posted.
Hope you get it worked out sir. I love fords and have a 2022 F150 Powerboost. Great vehicle. But not sure why the transmission is so clunky compared to my 2021 gmc 1500 3.0 diesel with 10 speed. Both are good trucks. But both have been in several times for mechanical issues, which stumped service folks for several days. I thinking that my previous vehicles lasted 300K without significant issues and these new ones are too complex with computer flashes etc being needed.
I own a 2000 f150 Lariat 4x4 5.4 4 speed automatic with 488,000 miles, been all over the country and never had any major problems other than maintenance 🤷🏻🤷🏻
There's nothing more frustrating than having problems with your vehicle. My son had a 2020 denali with 3.0 duramax. It broke down several times. Two of them he was towing his travel trailer with family. The radiator went out at 65 k. It got to the point he didn't dare to go anywhere more than ten miles. I haven't had any problems so far. My 2013 tundra was great. Did get a brake job. I tow a travel trailer all over the north west. I now have a 21 titan xd that has also done great without any issues. It's tows with authority and is more comfortable than the tundra.
Thanks for leaving a comment. It certainly is frustrating to have issues with a newer vehicle - especially when you're depending on it to get you from A to B with a family and trailer in tow. I'd definitely consider a Toyota or Nissan truck if they made one in a one-ton heavy duty version capable of towing our 5th wheel. Thanks again. Every click of that like button, and comment, helps grow our channel. We appreciate it.
I guess I expected it to perform like any 3, 4, 5, or 6 speed automatic transmission I've had in the past. I wouldn't think that adding more gears would create a problem like we experienced.
Many hot shot trucking companies are having problems with the 10 speed autos.May be a soft ware issue? I do not care what make and model you get or own any mechanical thing can have problems.Hope you get it sorted .
What is the gear ratio does the truck have? Next question, are you using tow mode, because you mentioned do need parking assist well in reverse which makes me believe the software believes it is in trailer mode?
We don't have the pro trailer backup assist - just the backup sensors and the camera system. The truck has the 3:73 gear ratio. The backup system I was referring to is the camera and sensor indicators on the display screen. The graphic of the truck and sensors came up, but not the rear camera system.
They don't need to make the truck connect remotely to the dealer. They could just make the codes easily accessible to the owner and he could tell the dealer what they are. Of course that would make it easier for people to repair their own vehicles and they wouldn't want that.
I have a 2020 f350 , 3000 miles and the oxygen sensor went bad just a light in the dashboard fixed it same day because fird had the part. I’m waiting to plow Snow , so I will be going forward and backwards plowing slamming the gear shifter like I always do, it will plow many driveways I purchased the eight year warranty with Snow plowing coverage. I’ll let you know how it goes. Good or bad
Great question. We're just approaching 36,000 miles now. So we have not had any transmission flush or filter change done yet. It's possible that both of those services were done by the dealership that sold us the Ford Blue Oval Gold Certified truck. That might be part of the 160 point inspection/service that they do.
I have a 2022 F-150 3.5 EcoBoost, it's had a "NOISE" Issue, and the 10R80 Clunkiness since we bought it June of 2022. It had 4600 Miles on it, It's been to 2 Different Dealers, and now at a 3rd Dealer that has taken the time to troubleshoot my Issue, and yesterday 09/12/2023 my Service Writer Told me the Tech's were going Crazy Diagnosing the Issue, FINALLY, the "4" Technician 's got together and Came up with a Transmission Issue! They have Ordered a COMPLETE 10R80 Replacement Unit to be Installed in my Basically Brand New F-150. Two week delivery window out of Memphis. I really hate having my NEW TRUCK TORN APART because of FORD & GM's Failure to have a SOLID TRANSMISSION in these New TRUCK'S???? Just really BUMMS Me Out!!!
I totally understand the frustration. Hopefully the new transmission is an improvement! I'm wondering if they cleaned up some of the issues in the replacement transmissions - or if they're just the same problems in a shiny new package.
Thanks a bunch. I sure hope n pray that someone has done "something" at Ford to address these shortcomings and basically Bad Parts inside of this what could be a Stout Tranny! Clunkiness, Whining, Banging of the Drive Train, Hesitation in and out of Gear's. I just been driving it and "Trying" to get Someone to DIAG the issue. It's been at this Dealership Since Sept 6th now. I just hope the TRANNY Guy's have done enough of these by now that my Truck get's put back together without any Issues? IE, Leaks, Wiring, pieces and parts get put back "correctly" and Torqued Properly.
That is incredibly disappointing. Ford really needs to get their stuff together. These sort of problems in only 1 year is totally unacceptable. Our Bronco Sport already almost left me stranded on Christmas Eve last year. Was getting Chinese food in Seneca, the vehicle started really hard, then it stalled half way out of the parking lot. It would not start. Remember, that was during that horrible cold weather we had those couple days around Christmas. Luckily, I was able to reset by opening then closing the door. Turns out the Battery Junction Box was bad...... I only had 4,000 miles on it at the time. None of this stuff should be happening this soon to your vehicle or mine.
Isn't it crazy the problems that are possible as vehicles get more complicated? We made it home without any issues. I think it was likely some electrical/computer hiccup that fixed itself. We'll keep our eye on it. But sometimes we miss the reliability and simplicity of our old vehicles of the 80s and 90s. They weren't super comfortable, quiet, or fuel efficient - but they did get us from A to B every single day with very few issues. And when issues did pop up - almost any garage mechanic could fix them and it didn't cost an arm and a leg. Thanks for watching!
I was reading someone that several people were mentioning that the torque converter might be an issues with these 10 speeds, same for the GM 10 speeds and that their's is potentially worse.
My 21 f350 7.3 has 26000 miles on it so far no problems other than a door actuator that needed replaced and every now and then I get that dead pedal thing going around a corner they say thats a drive by wire thing that a banks pedal monster will get rid of ...nah not enough of a problem to worry about
So far, I've not had another issue with the transmission. I'm more careful now to make sure I come to a complete stop before changing between Drive and Reverse. As far as the lifters - our truck has had better oil analysis results in our most recent oil test. So we're just driving it like normal and we'll keep an eye out for symptoms. I am glad that we do have the extended warranty.
Everyone in North America, including me, complains about the horrible hard shifting and gear searching of the 10R80 in the Ranger. I just randomly changed the fluid in the transfer case and it all went away. After changing the transmission fluid a week later, it was even better!!! I've never been a fan of factory fluids, and this just solidifies my thoughts on them. Change yours asap, along with both diffs too!!!
I feel like people always thought the Dodge transmissions were bad. And we had a Dodge Ram with the 360 engine years ago. Great engine and great comfortable truck - but we had the transmission rebuilt a few times. Now - I feel like transmission issues are more common across several brands. I do seem to still hear great things about the Allison transmission in the Chevy and GM diesel trucks though. I’m hoping this was just a simple computer burp/glitch and that it fixed itself. I’ve heard several people who have had the computer/transmission “reprogrammed” at the dealership and it seems to buy them a year or so, but eventually the transmission needs some work. We’re just going to keep using this truck the way we need to (thanks to the 100K power train warranty through the Ford Blue Oval Certified program) and hope that they can fix whatever goes wrong along the way. I certainly would not buy a truck today without a longer power train warranty. Too much, and to costly to repair all the possible issues.
I just got a new service truck with 7.3 10 speed, I was supprised that in tow haul it uses all 10 speeds. The truck is 16k, about the same as a pickup and trailer, when towing a good load, trans guys recommend not using overdrive. That means 8,9, and 10 should not be used to tow. Maybe tow haul should address this.
I would like to buy a new truck. I am just not going to write a check for 65-90k to drive a truck. I don’t make a living with my truck and can’t write anything off. You look at the recalls and it is just a bad situation. I’ll fix the rust and keep driving my 2010 F-150
Certainly if you have a good reliable used truck - there’s no shame (and sometimes less frustration) in keeping an older truck going! And you’re right about the cost of these new trucks. It’s crazy. Thankfully we can write part of ours off because we use it for business.
I just had my 10 speed transmission go out on our 2018 F-150 with a 3.5L EcoBoot last week, 123K its a $8,000 repair (Water pump is also bad and this repair price is in that repair cost as well). We had the AWE vacuum wheel hubs go bad at 70k which is a $1,800. I'm getting it repaired but needless to say this will be my last Ford Truck I will own if they are still equipped with this Ford 10R80 transmission, IWE wheel hubs or an engine with cam phasers.
Just purchased a expedition 2018 with 76k miles. Delivered to SC from Ohio and drove around first day and tranny is screwed up. We purchased a 120k extended warranty gladly but they picked up the truck next day and sent back to Ohio. This shit is ridiculous. These companies are pushing all new highly complex vehicles that seem to have multiple problems that can cost thousands and thousands of dollars well before 100k miles….
Sounds like a valve body issue. Sounds like you got valves sticking, causing pressure issues. Transmission tech with Ford for over 5 years now. Two main issues I’ve seen from these ten speeds is Valves sticking in the valve body, and CDF drums. I know on the 10r140s which is what your super duty has they have issues with the rear planet and have a recall currently. Very simple diag, pan just needs to be dropped and the tech diagnosing your truck should air test your trans before splitting your valve body to rule out a cdf issue.
I have a 2019 ram 5500 dump truck with 6000 miles nothing but training problems had it back to the dealer several times now that it’s out of warranty they say there’s an issue with it. Haha
That's definitely an unfair system! (Not recognizing or acknowledging there is a problem until after the warranty expires). And with only 6000 miles! We made it home safely and without any issues. We're crossing our fingers that it was just a computer glitch that won't return. Thanks for watching!
Manual transmission would be nice! But I’ve always seen that the standard transmissions have lower towing capabilities than their automatic counterparts. I’m not exactly sure why that’s the case.
That’s true. People are generally quiet about their vehicles when they are performing as expected. It’s only when we have an issue that we talk about it. I’d like to be one of the millions that don’t talk about it. :)
I’ve always been confused when people know the truck they are buying is going to have problems based on friends and other ways, just don’t buy it, especially after owning a previous Ford. I’ve owned a dozen Fords including the pos 6.0 , a 2011 6.2 pos with endless transmission problems and coolant in engine all by 77k . I had a 06 Cummins in between that was fantastic for 140k . I’m not a Chevy guy my son in law has 2500 6.6 I’ve driven towing a gooseneck horse trailer and was surprised how well it did. Good luck .
Thanks for watching! I have friends who have had issues with their Ram and GMC trucks - so I think they all have potential for issues. I have heard great things about that Cummins engine (earlier years) - but worry about the Dodge/Ram transmissions. We actually had a gas Dodge that we replaced the transmission in twice!
Not trying to be a smart ass but with as many issues as you've had towing do you think it's maybe how you tow it? I know trucks have problems but I've never heard of someone having this many issues while towing specifically.
Anything is possible I suppose. Maybe I don't tow hard enough (like was the case with our turbo failure a few times - not run hard enough), or maybe I to too hard for too long? We do live in the hills of NW Pennsylvania - there's not much flat land.
Thanks for letting me know. I’ve actually heard a few times before that people have transmission issues just after a fluid change. Was this the first time the fluid had been changed? Since I have the 100,000 mile warranty - I’m wondering if I should have it changed just before the warranty expires. What kind of warranty comes on the new transmission?
I bought brand new 2024 ford f250 with the 7.3 and less than 1,500 miles the cam blew apart. Had problems with the screen as well, ended up getting it fixed and traded for a Chevy 2500. I will never own another ford truck!
Ford's quality has definitely dipped in recent years. Sad to see this happen. Been driving a Ford truck since 1982. Probably won't buy another this time around, though. Just too many issues with the 7.3L and the tranny. For what they are selling these rigs, there should be very few issues.
I agree that for the price (new AND used) - you should get a reliable vehicle that is worry free for a long time. But I think potential issues occur across all brands. I've seen people having issues with their Ram trucks, their GMC or Chevy trucks, even the new Nissan trucks. I haven't heard many issues with the Toyota trucks - but they don't offer a heavy duty option.
@@PurpleCollarLife Toyota trucks do have their own issues as well. You can look at 5.7 cam tower leaks , timing chain tensioners. The most fatal of these seems to be the valve spring issue however (however rare it is).
We purchased this truck used, as a Ford Certified vehicle, so it has the 100,000 mile warranty included. That's one of the key advantages to the Blue Oval Gold Certified used vehicle program - a better warranty than buying a vehicle new! :)
You have a gorgeous truck, that 10 speed is unfortunately known for issues, I prefered the ZF six speed transmission Ford use to use. If your in the market in the future, I'd recommend the F-450, just on payload and steering radius alone especially driving gooseneck or 5th wheel. Stay with Ford non the less as the other manufacturers aren't as well built overall. Regardless that truck will last a very long time if properly maintained even if you need a new tcm or tranny.
My service vehicle soon light just came on mine only has 2066 miles on it but shifts fine its going to be the second time in the shop for me 2024 first time the power steering line blew at 440 miles but ford gave my 2 extra years of warranty for my troubles but it doesn't help when it doesn't run
Thanks for watching and sharing your story! That would certainly be a bummer to have to rent a car 11 hours from home after buying a brand new one.
Thanks, Chris. We made it home without an issue. Everything worked great! It’s going to the shop this week to get checked out.
Thanks! We haven't had another issue since. We've towed the camper, our enclosed trailer, and the boat. About 240 additional miles without a hiccup.
My 21 6.7f 350 has luckily never let me down. My 16 Duramax dually has never let me down either. I tow a 20ft boat and a truck camper
Thanks for watching. Please keep us updated on your experience!
Buy a Ram and travel down the road in peace.
@@treeamigo8447 you mean a fiat/peugeot made in mexico?
Would that be with the amazing 68rfe trash tranny or the toyota 6 speed? Either way just pure trash.
@@treeamigo8447yeah right till the interior starts rattling an breaking down.
Very true.
Really? I didn’t know that I am a new rv guy I have a grand reflexión
Thanks for watching!
Great video! I was at a Ford dealer for a short time and saw more trans issues than anything else on the new trucks. The R10 was really bad
Thanks for watching!
What year is your 350

i feel ya brother and understand the frustration. i was going to comment and say the same thing about disconnecting the battery. its ridiculous all the electronics they have now and i think its more of a pain in the rear end than it does help, in most cases.
Do you want to bet on the fluke thing?
Good Evening Sir, ( full watch ) I'm very sorry about the problem and the stress that cause to both of you 😢Your dealer did gave you a very good distance service 🧐👍 Best Luck 👍👌😇Cheers 🍻
Thanks, Dave! We made it home without any problems at all.
Older trucks have there issues to.
@@codEagleYt And they do not last forever where i live in New York state even if you take great care they( rust away) in 10 years if your lucky!
@@TonyLasagna Thanks!
Man that sucks, sorry to hear this is happening to you. We specifically picked up our truck with a manual transmission to avoid these newer transmissions.
The king of recalls
So far, I haven't yet received an actual Ford recall on this truck.
Sorry to hear you are having troubles, I hope that my 10 speed does not fail. You are towing 2k more than me and I'm getting a lousy 8.4 mpg while towing. My 7.3 towes with no problems but wow what a difference in fuel mileage. Mine has a set of 3.55 😢
I really considered the 3.55, but thought I'd rather have the 3.73 for towing. You probably get better MPG than us when you're unloaded.
@PurpleCollarLife Honestly I only get roughly mid 12's in town and 14.7 on the highway and this is in eco mode.
Thanks for the info! I have an appointment scheduled at the dealership. We’ll see what they say.
The cam and lifter issue isn't an oil issue its a material that it made of issue its delaminating do to poor heat treat
Thanks for watching!
Could also be caused by an inferior steel alloy.
That's really unfortunate to hear. But I'm glad that the transmission problem seems to be fixed now with the new 6R140!
I have 2021 F250 with the 7.3 and 10 speed transmission with 115,000 miles on it and still running strong weighing 10,000 lbs truck and tools every day.
That’s good to hear - thanks for sharing your experience!
The dealership was able to remotely check the truck without the truck being turned on. I’m not sure how it works - but they got all the information while it truck was just sitting in the camp site.
Enjoy your snow bird trip to AZ! :)
Come on Toyota put out a 3/4 ton truck please!!!
I’d definitely consider a Toyota 3/4 or 1 ton truck! They just don’t seem to want to be in the heavy-duty truck market.
Very interesting!
They wont do it. Ford wont let them.
@@jamesvw769not true, many people have said the dealer removed that feature for them. All they have to do is a click a button on their laptop and it’s done.
6.7PS; 10spd; rock solid over 30k miles
That’s awesome! Thanks for sharing.
I had 2017 F-150 3.5 twin turbo. Towed many times never a problem.
That's great!
Thanks for sharing your experience.
Even the dog was like, please work 😂😂😂
She was. :)
There's another RUclipsr I watch and he says the clunky hard shifts are very common with these trucks.
@@Captain-Awesome Thanks! I'm going to ask the dealer about this.
This sucks hope it gets fully resolved, I was also looking at an F350 SD long bed with the 6.7 I do see a lot of complaints and lemon laws and campaigns to correct this issue.
Update video coming out soon about our 10-speed transmission. Thanks for watching.
Our favorite Ford truck mechanics (under warranty) is McCandless Ford in Mercer, PA. Keep us posted on what you find out about that transmission!
Wow and im looking to buy the same truck now im kind of up in the air hope everything worked out thanks for the info🤷
In the end - it seems like there are issues with every brand. Overall - we still love this F350!
@@PurpleCollarLife thank you yes you are correct im still gonna buy me one🙏
Just buy the 8 year warranty
I’m wonder if you had disconnected the battery would have reset it? Great videos and now I think I will definitely go with the 7.3L over diesel. Thank you!
Disconnecting the battery may have reset the condition. That was the dealership's recommendation if we have problems moving forward. We'd need to disconnect both batteries, since the truck has 2 of the 12-volt batteries.
What was the fix on the truck???
So far, just a computer reset. :)
What year is your truck ?? I have a late 2022 F250 with the Godzilla and 10-speed hoping that Ford has this problem solved..
Ours is a 2020. I’m not sure what changes were made between the 2020 and the 2022 versions of the engine and transmission. We made it home towing the RV without issue. Thanks for watching!
The rear diff cover has oil on it already?

I haven’t had any issues with my 2020 f250 but definitely have to upgrade that high pressure fuel pump for the DCR fuel pump and the 60gal fuel tank 🐶
@williamrhoades1913 I have a f-250 2022 7.3 with 4.30 gears and yes pulls very similar to a mid 2000s diesel truck. Very impressive for a gas.
yeah i use the tow haul alot on my work truck and i find the downhill shifts way to aggressive i drive it around the suburbs of pittsburgh i usaually haul around 6000 lbs@@PurpleCollarLife
Any updates on your truck? Is it still running good? Any more issues with the 10 speed
Thanks for watching and I appreciate you asking. I actually have a transmission update video that I shot about a week ago that I need to edit and post. Stay tuned - more info coming.
Hope you make it home safe. Looking forward to here that and what the issue is.

We bought 4- 22 F 450 7.3 gas,
And had transmission issues with all of them,
One is on it 3rd
transmission
One had lifter failure
And I have been noticing metallic glitter in drain oil of all of them😢
That is not good news!
What year is your truck
Our truck is a 2020.
I traded my 7.3 for a GMC 6.6 gas. I tow every day. Got sick of the issues.
Thanks for sharing! Does the GMC have the 10 speed?
@@PurpleCollarLife no. It's a 2023 w the 6 speed.
Thanks for watching!
I own a 2000 f150 Lariat 4x4 5.4 4 speed automatic with 488,000 miles, been all over the country and never had any major problems other than maintenance 🤷🏻🤷🏻
That's awesome! Thanks for sharing.
The 10 speed basically has a gear for a lot more speeds. Gassing it towing slow, then braking, gas it again, brake geez what do you expect?
I guess I expected it to perform like any 3, 4, 5, or 6 speed automatic transmission I've had in the past. I wouldn't think that adding more gears would create a problem like we experienced.
Many hot shot trucking companies are having problems with the 10 speed autos.May be a soft ware issue? I do not care what make and model you get or own any mechanical thing can have problems.Hope you get it sorted .
Thanks! We made it home without any issues. I have an appointment for it to get checked out this week.
Good or bad
Thanks for the update! Keep us posted. I didn't know that you could option the snow plowing coverage into the 8-year warranty. That's awesome!
What’s your mileage up to now on that 10 speed? Have you had a fluid filter changes on the transmission yet?
Great question. We're just approaching 36,000 miles now. So we have not had any transmission flush or filter change done yet. It's possible that both of those services were done by the dealership that sold us the Ford Blue Oval Gold Certified truck. That might be part of the 160 point inspection/service that they do.
What gear ratio axle does your truck have?
3:73 electric locking
This isn’t a widespread problem
@@chriskuntz1763Ford generally has and had issues
I was reading someone that several people were mentioning that the torque converter might be an issues with these 10 speeds, same for the GM 10 speeds and that their's is potentially worse.
Interesting! Thanks for sharing. We had an older Dodge truck that kept having transmission/torque converter issues.
GM's ten speeds are somewhat better than Ford's I heard.
I keep wanting to buy my first Ford, but all these failures and problems is just crazy.
My 21 f350 7.3 has 26000 miles on it so far no problems other than a door actuator that needed replaced and every now and then I get that dead pedal thing going around a corner they say thats a drive by wire thing that a banks pedal monster will get rid of ...nah not enough of a problem to worry about
Thanks for watching and leaving the comment! We've never considered the Banks update - but that might be an idea when our extended warranty runs out.
Just bought a tremor today. Any updates on tranny or lifters ?
So far, I've not had another issue with the transmission. I'm more careful now to make sure I come to a complete stop before changing between Drive and Reverse. As far as the lifters - our truck has had better oil analysis results in our most recent oil test. So we're just driving it like normal and we'll keep an eye out for symptoms. I am glad that we do have the extended warranty.
Hate to hear you're having these issues. I have heard a lot of the lifter failures are related to long idle times. Hope Ford can sort this out!
Me too! We're doing an update on the truck issues in another month or so after we get some more info.
Thanks!
Hope you did the towing break in correctly

Ford is now the king of recalls. @@PurpleCollarLife
Seems to me like many different Fords have troubles with their transmissions.....
@@PurpleCollarLifethe 2024 gasser Chevy 2500s will be getting the same "Allison" that the diesels have
I just got a new service truck with 7.3 10 speed, I was supprised that in tow haul it uses all 10 speeds. The truck is 16k, about the same as a pickup and trailer, when towing a good load, trans guys recommend not using overdrive. That means 8,9, and 10 should not be used to tow. Maybe tow haul should address this.
Thanks!
Cummins w High output and AISIN trans is the truck to buy if you don’t want headaches

The old Ford 7.3 was the best after that good luck to all you Ford owners

Thanks for sharing your experience. That certainly is disappointing to hear.
Ford needs to get their shit together before they bankrupt themselves with these issues
Getting to be like stellantis
Sounds like a valve body issue. Sounds like you got valves sticking, causing pressure issues. Transmission tech with Ford for over 5 years now. Two main issues I’ve seen from these ten speeds is Valves sticking in the valve body, and CDF drums. I know on the 10r140s which is what your super duty has they have issues with the rear planet and have a recall currently. Very simple diag, pan just needs to be dropped and the tech diagnosing your truck should air test your trans before splitting your valve body to rule out a cdf issue.
Thanks for the expertise!
My TCM went out, it would shift out of gear while driving because it was losing connection but was an easy fix.
@@PurpleCollarLife yeah hopefully you don’t have any more issues. Good luck and take care 👍
Ford needs to return to manual transmission or bullet proof C6 automatic
Manual transmission would be nice! But I’ve always seen that the standard transmissions have lower towing capabilities than their automatic counterparts. I’m not exactly sure why that’s the case.
Nobody ever hears about the millions of Ford and GM ten speeds out there that don’t have problems.
This reminds me why I'm buying a Toyota tomorrow.
Did you get your Toyota? How do you like it so far?
@@PurpleCollarLife the bank said nevermid to my 6% rate and reapproved me at 12%. So I'm driving a rusted out envoy instead.
My transmission failed at 109k miles after fluid change. Just paid $8011 for a new transmission
Wow - under 1500 miles! That would be frustrating for sure. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment!
Where abouts are you? If you need me and I'm around I might be able to come get your camper with my RAM
Thanks for the offer! We made it home without any problems.
When I know I'm going to be crawling around I limit the trans to 2nd gear. This way it doesn't keep shifting around trying to find the perfect gear.
Good idea!
You mentioned a 100,000 mile powertrain warranty. That’s for diesel only. Gassers are 50,000 miles.
Was searching for an update on this. I don’t believe I saw one.
We haven’t posted a video about it yet. I’m working on one that will come out next month.
10 gears in the same case size that used to house 4-5 gears.
Thanks for watching! I didn’t realize it’s the same case. That’s interesting.
@@PurpleCollarLife its not the same case but roughly similar dimensions.
My service vehicle soon light just came on mine only has 2066 miles on it but shifts fine its going to be the second time in the shop for me 2024 first time the power steering line blew at 440 miles but ford gave my 2 extra years of warranty for my troubles but it doesn't help when it doesn't run
