I am glad to see more people wanting to learn and be able to fix things their self's. glad you like the video. this wont get all new fluid in after one change. Recently did 2 dump and fills on my 2012 mazda 3. Car had 168k kms when I had the first oil change then another at 170k kms. I also had the transmission filter changed and the pan cleaned. The performance of the car has improved greatly and fuel consumption has gone down alot. The car feels like it's sipping fuel right now. Before the first fluid change, the car seemed to struggle with acceleration and power output was low.
Hi, when 2 last months I went and change for ATF Mazda3 Skyactiv at a local dealer and service department. I need for change ATF and transaxle filter. But he told me he can change ATF only but can't change filter because it's lifetime no need to change. Hah hah hah just I talk with him "why". Then I knew that he told and explained me that not make sense. DIY be better at my home. Thanks for you VDO.
For my pratical model i did confirm with the parts department at my local dealer and he said i dont have a filter but a screen. The next time i do this i will drop the pan to 100% confirm for my self. But i do trust the parts manager. Now other mazda 3 in the same year as mine might have the filter it always best to confirm with your dealer against your vin #.
Thank you so much, makes me very angry that dealers tell you this is a sealed transmission and has lifetime fluid with no way to check it. Wish I would have found you sooner
I dont know why some dealers say this! My dealer doesnt. But in the end they want your transmission to fall to purchase a new one. It may take time for this to happen. Thanks for watching. Glad you liked the video.
Just did mine today. Wanted to drop the oil pan as well, but it was stuck there for good, so I skipped the step. There is usually a lot a gunk in there around the magnet. The 2014 2.5 Skyactive takes 9mm hex key to remove the drain plug. Also FYI the color of the fluid doesn't mean anything. If you want a proof next time send it out for testing. Thanks for the tutorial.
Thanks for this video! It's so hard to find info on this. I do have one questions though! Is there a transmission filter that you would recommend changing as well?
You welcome, I am glad my video was helpful. As for the Transmission Filter i would say check with your local dealer ask them but give them your VIN this way they can check and tell you if it has one. For my Car i was told there wasn't a filter but i would always double check to be sure.
Blue transmission oil wow who knew the 2011 has got the transmission dipstick back by the firewall i think that the transmission oil is different too from this one
Just bought same car with skyactiv engine with 118,000 miles on it. I'm debating if I should do a drain. There is no scheduled maintenance in the manual for this engine. Then I read that for skyactiv engine, the transmission fluid is lifetime for that engine until there is a major transmission maintenance. What are people's thoughts about this???
So first thing i will say there is no such thing as life time oil/fluids. Oils will break down over time with heat cycles this is why oils good from clear, blue, red, golden in colors to darker or even brownish to black. When they say lifetime and you dont change the transmission oil it will be the life of that part in this case the transmission the transmission will run untill the oils is broken down so much the transmission will over time fail hense life time. This is also lifetime because most people dont keep cars longer then 5 years so it will last longer then that and or fail around that amount of time depending of total miles/kms driven how hard you are on the vechile etc. lots of factors. Now on to the should you change the fluid you do have alot of miles on it already. I had about that much in kms and i did a drain and fill. and did it again a bit later and then i am going to be doing it every 30kms... now i know some people will stay 30kms isnt long and the fluid will last long and they are correct but since i did a drain and fill it doesnt replace all the fluid at once only about 40 to 50 percent so changing every 30kms will ensure over time and many drain and fills later i have good fluid. This might 100% answer your question as in should you do it.. best answer for this would ask your dealer and what they recommend. But i will say one last thing New fluid is better then old. The damage might already be done. doing a flush that forces fluid thru the transmission might not be good as why i did a drain and fill. Which ever you decide it will be you choice. I hope this helps in some way. Thanks for watching my video and taking the time to comment.
Thanks for the video and the info. I have 157,000 on my car and I was concerned about the transmission fluid. At that mileage some say leave it alone and pray it lasts. This seems like a happy medium between that and a flush.
I didnt I got busy with other things. But I do plan on doing another one this summer I have about 142000 kms on it now so what like 20 000kms more then when I did it. If you did it a couple weeks after then your would have more of the dirty fluid replaced. if you dont then replace it more often then normal. I will do it this summer and I will put an update in the comments what I found. I hope this helps sorry I didnt get the second dump and fill in again.
I got my drain plug snug but now I’m terrified in case is leaking, and I’m thinking about removing the bottom cover to inspect it… Other than that it was a breeze, thanks for the video
If your considered let the car run, cycle through some of the gears while you front end is off the ground this way you can inspect for leaks. If your still concerned then do short trips and always check underneath for leaks.
@@TDLDIY I waited for about an hour and then installed the cover back on, and the drain plug was dry after that hour. I’m just paranoid and overthink everything when it comes to cars. If it didn’t leak after an hour sitting there I should be fine right?
@@GodExplained Ya, if you ran it for sometime and let it sit with no looks you should be good to go. But maybe for a couple days after just look out for any leaks.
great vid,,,,how do you check the level of the fluid?is it like other cars with engine warm ,on flat surface ,while engine at idle and then pulling dip stick out and take a reading ,,,please explain. thanx alot
Supposed to be on a level surface with engine running and at 122 deg F. I have an Innova scan tool that tells me the temperature. Some people use infrared/laser thermometers.
We have this exact car, so what do you think would be a fair price to have this done, we don't wanna get ripped off, I could actully do it myself, but we don't have a garage, and it's winter..
I am glad you liked my video and it could save you some money at the same time. I will put that on my list of things to do to the car, I am not sure when i will get to it since i am awaiting my other car to be fix due to hit and run. Thanks for watching.
Why not check the fluid level with the dip stick, that's what its for right? I have to do this with my daughter CX 5 and I am worried that the person that did it before didn't do it right or what if some leaked out .. problem is different videos say check it off and some say check it while running... so I am confused a bit.
Yes, always check the dip stick. You will have to do this when the fluid is warmed up and engine is running. When i dumped it and measured it, it just gives me a good idea how much i needed to add. but if you do this when the engine is already warm then you will be putting in too much. since the new fluid is cold or room temp. when the fluid is hot it expands. so you will have to keep that in mind. I hope this helps.
Not really sure what your asking about. But not calibration is require. if your more specific i might be able to answer you better. If there is an area of concern.
@@TDLDIY Sir, I wanted to tell you that changing Toyota Cvt transmission oil requires learning or calibration. Do you need to calibrate or learn if i change the transmission oil of Mazda 3 model 2014 ?
@@mdshafikulislam8518 oh interesting not that i am aware of, my car runs fine. Others videos i have since doesnt seem to have to do anything like that. You can always confirm 100% with your local dealership.
You can flush it after fill in with new oil. Beside filler hole, it will have an intercooler . Take off one rubber in from that cooler and start your car. Let it drain for 2 liter while start the car. Then fill it again. Total you will use 8 liter.
If it is the round intercooler like on a 2016 Mazda3 that won't work because those rubber hoses are for the coolant from the radiator. The only way to flush would be to remove the round intercooler and use a flushing adapter plate or stick tight fitting vinyl tubing into the ATF inlet and out let holes that are visible once yo remove the intercooler.
Actually you might be OK on a 2103 because, depending on the model, it uses a different intercooler and might have 4 hoses on the intercooler, large ones for coolant and small ones for ATF
2016 mazda CX-3, after drain & fill, measured. After engine warm up trany at 122f/50c using scanner, should the level bw checked with engine off or on? I checked it off and topped a little fluid at marker. However the fluid dropped down to the 122f/50c marker after checking at engine idle. What's the correct way without overfilling?
I guess you could because there is a couple electrical connectors you have to disconnect. I didn't disconnect the battery when i did it. I hope this helps.
I believe it was about 3.5 to 4 quarts. when you drain it just double check with how much came out. I hope you find this helpful and thanks for watching.
My opinion is its required, fluid/ oil will only last so long before it fails to lubricate properly. oils break down due to heat cycles and become less effective. You can always ask your dealer as well but most mechanic will say the same.
HINT the manufacturer stay in business by cars falling apart quickly, not service unless its engine or transmission replacement..than they happy start at 3K-5k for the cheap cars maybe..and than they would come to the rescue..offer your busted car some number taht is almost used market value, just lets get you into a new finane term..hint hint Even a nice chunk of trade in value usually built in the price ..we used to pull window tags from entire lot 3-4 weeks b4 "BIG SALE" and the new window tags would go in the night b4 big sale ..only avg. 3k more .. so this way we feel like we really being taken care of..
For the 1.6 L / 2013 Mazda 3 skyactive, it's a 6 transaxle transmission or a 5? I noticed you used the transmission fluid for the 6. I need to do this. I have just hit 130k
So i used what the dealer said my car needed with checking thru the VIN #. I have the 2013 Mazda 3 but to be sure always check against your VIN # this way you know for sure your putting in the right stuff. Second if you got the fluid already when you drain it you will see either red or a blue tint that will be different fluids my was the blue stuff. My brother in laws 2010 Mazda 3 2.5 l i believe takes the red trans fluid. Anyways i hope this helps.
Does the Mazda have a dipstick? We have a 2019 Mazda 3, but only 30,000 miles. I would like to have it serviced at 50,000 miles for the first drain & fill. Ater this, every 30,000 miles. I am wondering if a sealed transmission.
Mazda has dipsticks. One can say lifetime fulid or sealed transmission. I will say no fulid will last a lifetime. My dip stick was under the air filter box. Its hidden away unlike other transmission that might have a normal style dip stick. More and more companies are doing similar things. my old 2010 nissan rouge didnt have a normal dip stick either.
Mazda 3 2019 is 4th generation. The 2013 in this video is a 2nd generation with a preview of 3rd generation features like the 6 speed "skyactive" automatic transmission. I would not blindly trust this video for a 2019 model. Treat this video as general information until you confirm details for your 2019 model.
@@bobloblaw10001 Int total agreement with you. Unless this vehicle has a dipstick that allows you to check the level, and clear instructions on temperature through a scan tool, I will probably allow the dealer to do this. The only issue with drain/fill procedures and this so-called lifetime fluid is the dealer not wanting to do this. Even if you have 1.5 hours of labor and $60 fluid, plus some shop fees and taxes, this should be less than $250. Yes, a lot for a simple drain/fill, but sometimes it is best to allow the dealer to do this.
De esta manera no reemplazará el aceite del convertidor de par. Solo se mezclará con aceite nuevo. No es perfecto, pero funcionará si lo cambia de nuevo un poco después.
check with your vin number if you have a filter. I was told a couple times there was no filter for my vin number just the pick up tube with a metal screen on it. but yes you would want to do that for sure if you have one which would require you to remove the pan and replace the filter and get a new gasket or get gasket maker and re Install the transmission pan.
This process will be slightly different on a manual transmission. 1. fluid is different 2. amount might be different 3. where the fill plug/ dip stick will be in different location. Same with the drain plug. For best idea i would search how to do the manual transmission with the year model you have.
there is no factory hole to access the Transmission plug in the protective plastic. well at least mine didnt. I could get a hole saw and make one. Thanks for giving your input and watching. I will consider shorting videos to get right to the point in the future. I though it would be good to show the whole process.
I have a 2016 skyactiv mazda2, the dealer has told me not to change the trans fluid till 200,000k. I'm currently at 120,000k and the dealers recommendation seems super suspect actually. What is your opinion on this?
That seems much too long. But i do recommend call other Mazda dealers in your area and see what they say as well. Its always better to get multiple recommend and see where the common response lies. If i was to give my though it would be somewhere in the 80 - 120k range in kms. *** I just called my local mazda dealer for you after i typed out my repsonse so i am adding to it. They told me they recommend it to be do at 80k to 100k. If you are keeping the car they would still recommend doing it even at your 120k kms. My dealer said it will be a forced flush and could cost around 350 ish possible cheaper. I hope this helps good luck.
Thanks for the comment. I did ask my local dealer / parts desk about the filter they told me on my model there wasn't one it was checked against my VIN #. Now that being said I have seen other video of mazda 3 that yes they do indeed have a filter. and you would want to change that during the Transmission fluid dump and fill.
@@TDLDIY my 2016 Mazda 6 touring does have a transmission filter and i changed it along with the fluid at 70,000 and will do the same at 110,000 to increase the transmission life span what you think?

I keep hearing that it's better to not drain and fill the transmission fluid if it's never been changed and the car has a lot of miles on it. My car has 115,000 miles. Do you think it's better to go ahead and change it?
I have heard the same about changing the transmission fluids but most were done at the dealer with the pressurized system. I think a drain and fill will be ok but its not perfect it only changes out about 50% or so of the fluid. I would recommend contacting your dealer and ask them for there recommendation. 115, 000 mile is roughly 185,000 kms if you havent done it before them you might want to just drain and fill. But give a call to your dealer and see what they say.
I've seen before that on high mileage changes you should save the old fluid in case it is too late for the new fluid. That way if it slips you can drain the mostly new fluid out and put the old back in.
Thank you for the video! My 3 has 46k. Gonna the fill and dump thanks to your video! Have you swapped out the filter for the transmission? Was wondering if it has silicone or a gasket? Thanks again for the video!
Hey i am glad you liked the video. as for the transmission filter I have asked the dealer a couple times and they say my car with me giving the vin # they say it doesn't have one. But I know a lot do have the filter and I beleive most people put a gasket maker on it to put the pan back on.
@@TDLDIY oh ok cool I'll. Just do the dump n fill then n skip on the filter swap, my 3 has a 6 speed automatic. I'll do a lil more research before hand. Thanks for the reply!
i found the filter for 2013 mazda 3 2.0L skyactiv on Amazon. www.amazon.com/dp/B00HWNOZTA/?coliid=I17DER2TC7Y4GY&colid=1IFEC3I3850O6&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it Also from most of my research online. When you drop the fluid pan for the transmission, almost all the 2013 owners found that silicone was the seal for the pan. It's gonna take at least a day for that thing to dry. Plan ahead if you are going to change the filter.
I believe there are gaskets available for the trans pan. I used Permatex Automatic Transmission Gasket Sealer two years ago and it is holding up fine. My car is a 2015 Mazda 6 Grand Touring.
I have a 2016 Mazda CX-3 automatic transmission , approaching 60k I want to drop the pan and change the filter along with putting in new FZ transmission Fluid. Then at 120k do the same thing over. If I do multiple dump and fills after that would I run the risk of damaging the transmission? Maybe transmission slips? Or should I wait to dump and fill at 90k ? Mixing new fluid with old would that be an issue?
Imo just give it a dump and fill, wait a couple weeks, then do another. Then give it a single dump and fill every 15-20k. I wouldn't drop the pan until maybe 120-150k or if you start to experience weird shifting behavior. Provided service is done correctly, you're not risking anything working on it more often. It's just extra time and money on your part. Mixing new and old fluid would only be problematic if the transmission already has a foot in the door from lack of service

That's a good question, The answer is and the dealer said with my vin # that I didnt have a filter or no replacents available for my car. Which is the answer I went with. I will on my next transmission change take it off and look. The answer didnt seems correct at the time I believe I called around and got the same answer. I do recommend changing your transmission filter with your fluid.
I just got a mazda cx5 2014 They say lifetime fluid. Like who's lifetime? It bs. I see filters out there for it but not everyone has them. If your's doesn't have a filter then it has a screen. Has to have something? I'm doing mine as soon as possible. I see that mazda's transmission fluid is expensive.
So I just did this on a car identical to yours. 7 was the digit for the engine in the VIN. There is intact a filter for it. It’s not the one that typically shows up on auto part stores systems. If you still have the car and want the part number let me know.
Hi I got a 2012 SKY that I bought used in 2018 at 62,000km. I don't know the maintenance history of its transmission fluid. Now I'm almost at 100,000km and I should probably change it. Some people think after a certain point if it was never changed you better not change it or you risk breaking it. Do you think my situation has reached that certain point or I should change the oil?
Hey seems like you got a decent skyactiv there. So how I think about it is if you do a dump and fill your good. some / most place this is what they do now. If you get a transmission flush what happens here is 100% of the transmission fluid is changed unlike the dump and fill but it is also force thru the transmission and there are lot of paths and what not that possible could have some thing in it and it can break free and get stuck in a vavle or place that could cause problem with the transmission. So I think that's where the idea of if you haven't changed it in a long time your better off not touching it. But with a dump and fill I would like to think that new fluid is always better then old broken down fluid that isn't providing you the lubrication and protection it once did. So also with a dump and fill you will have to do it more often. because you only get about half of the fluid out. I hope this helps.
TDL DIY I would not recommend Mazda. Their oil is too thin (for better gas mileage) and cause vibration in my 2010 mazda3. I changed to Valvoline maxlife at 150k km. Car is smooth, no vibration in gear when stop at traffic light and the best part is gear downshift is better with better torque. Hope it will help.
Yes, your correct most dealerships will say that, unfortunately oils break down over time with cycles of hot and cold. Your transmission fluid after a certain point will not longer be protecting the components like it used to. My Mazda dealer will do transmission fluid flushes. This will prolong the life of the transmission. When a dealer says lifetime generally that mean the average lifetime a single owner will have it for.
@@TDLDIY The car has 65K miles on it (2017 Mazda 3 2.0 Touring). I still feel a drain and refill (4.5 qts) should still be performed. I don't believe it's going to "hurt" anything lol
There is a brand called Ravenol which I used for a few hundred miles. My transmission was slipping considerably prior to the drain and fill, and slipped a few times after. My second drain and fill was with oem fluid, and the slipping stopped completely. I don't blame the fluid for not completely resolving the slipping; I severely burned burned the fluid. My 2015 mazda skyactive has lifetime Transmission fluid and does not need a transmission flush so i am concerned people will be changing their fluid unnecessarily.
Hi Thanks for leaving a comment, I will first off say that lifetime transmission fluid is kinda a lie. Why you might ask well first off transmission fluid is product like engine oil that will over time break down and wont provide your transmission with the lubrication it requires. This is from heat and other factors that will break down over time. Now that being said they might kinda be telling you the truth and that is your transmission fluid will last the life of the transmission meaning that. if you never change it well your transmission will fail sooner then a transmission that has changed its transmission fluid say every 50,000 - 60,000 kms. Just remember one thing new oil or transmission fluid is always better then old dirty broken down fluid. I hope this brings some new light or information that might help you. Have a look on youtube and other sites to do your own research as well. ruclips.net/video/hQpsoI_UfZI/видео.html ruclips.net/video/RuNNqh8-jkw/видео.html
Thats what they try and market as but the fact is if you dont change the fulid then the oil will break down and your transmission will fail sooner. The other word i have heard is its life time transmission fulid. lifetime means the life of how long that transmission will last most likely the average people keep there cars 5 years give or take. But if you go to the dealer and ask to have your transmission flush they will do it. So let me know what are your thoughts on this.

You welcome, I am glad my video was helpful. As for the Transmission Filter i would say check with your local dealer ask them but give them your VIN this way they can check and tell you if it has one.
For my Car i was told there wasn't a filter but i would always double check to be sure.

Thanks a ton very helpful👍👍👍
You're welcome!
Blue transmission oil wow who knew the 2011 has got the transmission dipstick back by the firewall i think that the transmission oil is different too from this one
I think the Transmission oil for the 2011 is Mazdas M5 ATF red in color. I changed it on my brother in-laws 2010 mazda 3.
Great job
Thanks for watching.
Did you drive around first to bring the transmission to operating temperature?
I heard you can just run it for 5-10 minutes
Nicely done.
Thank you.
As you mentioned, did you do another drain and fill a few weeks later and if so, did the fluid look a lot cleaner than the first time..?
I didnt I got busy with other things. But I do plan on doing another one this summer I have about 142000 kms on it now so what like 20 000kms more then when I did it.
If you did it a couple weeks after then your would have more of the dirty fluid replaced. if you dont then replace it more often then normal. I will do it this summer and I will put an update in the comments what I found.
I hope this helps sorry I didnt get the second dump and fill in again.
Would have liked to see checking the level with dip stick...

@@TDLDIY That would be awesome. It would be nice to see how it's done and what the condition of the valves after 120K
You mean a drain and fill.but good tutorial.

Is the same process for 2019cx3?
You can flush it after fill in with new oil. Beside filler hole, it will have an intercooler . Take off one rubber in from that cooler and start your car. Let it drain for 2 liter while start the car. Then fill it again. Total you will use 8 liter.
Thanks for the comment I will look into that sounds legit thanks. i am always glad to hear other idea that work.
Did the drain plug have a crush washer on it?
Yes, There is one.
Supposed to be with the engine running. I have a 2015 Mazda 6 Grand Touring.
Hi do I need to disconnect car battery before change transmission fluid? Thanks!
I guess you could because there is a couple electrical connectors you have to disconnect. I didn't disconnect the battery when i did it. I hope this helps.
How many litres does it need?
I believe it was about 3.5 to 4 quarts. when you drain it just double check with how much came out.
I hope you find this helpful and thanks for watching.
I have a Mazda 3 2018 skyactiv. The manual says It does not require transmission oil change. What is your opinion on this?
My opinion is its required, fluid/ oil will only last so long before it fails to lubricate properly. oils break down due to heat cycles and become less effective.
You can always ask your dealer as well but most mechanic will say the same.
@@TDLDIY Thanks.

For the 1.6 L / 2013 Mazda 3 skyactive, it's a 6 transaxle transmission or a 5? I noticed you used the transmission fluid for the 6. I need to do this. I have just hit 130k

Anyways i hope this helps.
The 6 Speed only came with the 2.0 skyactiv engine.
Should I flush or dump and change the transmission on my 50k miles Mazda 3 skyactiv?
now with transmission oil changes it recommend to dump and fill. if you want most of your oil changed out do another dump and fill a weeks later.
Does the Mazda have a dipstick? We have a 2019 Mazda 3, but only 30,000 miles. I would like to have it serviced at 50,000 miles for the first drain & fill. Ater this, every 30,000 miles. I am wondering if a sealed transmission.
Can you check the correct fluid level with the dipstick? Nice video BTW ! Thank you.
@@bobloblaw10001 Yes, I do agree. with your comment. Use a general knowledge as your year model is not in the same range as displayed in the video.

Do we not need to replace the filter ?
check with your vin number if you have a filter. I was told a couple times there was no filter for my vin number just the pick up tube with a metal screen on it.
but yes you would want to do that for sure if you have one which would require you to remove the pan and replace the filter and get a new gasket or get gasket maker and re Install the transmission pan.
Measure and refill is OK. I would have done a proper level check. The dipstick has marks.
I also check the dip stick.
Could this same process be done on the manual transmission version?
This process will be slightly different on a manual transmission.
1. fluid is different
2. amount might be different
3. where the fill plug/ dip stick will be in different location. Same with the drain plug.
For best idea i would search how to do the manual transmission with the year model you have.
Dump 'n pump. Dump the old fluid, pump in the new.
Wow u put every1 through that all I have to do is go right under the carr and undo one bolt ur way is excessive taking half the car apart
there is no factory hole to access the Transmission plug in the protective plastic. well at least mine didnt. I could get a hole saw and make one. Thanks for giving your input and watching. I hope this helps good luck.

Thanks for the comment. I did ask my local dealer / parts desk about the filter they told me on my model there wasn't one it was checked against my VIN #.

Also from most of my research online.

Most Mazda dealership service depts state that the trans fluid is "lifetime" and should not be touched... ever.

There is a brand called Ravenol which I used for a few hundred miles. My transmission was slipping considerably prior to the drain and fill, and slipped a few times after.

Why a drain hole/plug is seen under the oil sump pan if fluid is lifetime? Also, why original filter is put on sale if fluid is lifetime?
I thought those transmissions were sealed..

Skyactiv has lifetime transmission fluid and does not need changed AS PER MAZDA
Then why put a drain plug. Lifetime of warranty is what they really mean.
@@dexterm1285 because if they need to service it, they still need a way to drain the fluid
@@MrJeepsterman Yea drain the fluid out when transmission toast since fluid never changed. Fluid is cheap transmissions aren't.

Your 100% Correct, I like how you stated "Lifetime of the warranty" its true but play on words to kinda trick the consumer.
Would it be similar on a 2016?
It should be a similar process, but i dont know for sure as it is a new body style. Always worth just double checking against your year.
