    Gunnera Banned! What this means for you as a gardener.
    Defra have classified Gunnera Cryptica, the now widely grown and sold hybrid of Gunnera tinctoria and manicata as an invasive species. This amazing widely grown exotic plant is fantastic for a jungle style garden but what does this new mean for us gardeners? I try and make it clear in this video plus links to the news article and scientific paper.

    I have grown this in different gardens after buying my first plant in the 70s from Beth Chatto, I have also used it on a couple of landscaping jobs in the past when it was legally allowed, also known as Gunnera chilensis and had another name before that!
    In none of the cases where I have used has it spread out of control, in fact it has grown in an identical fashion to manicata in one case for over 40 years, where are examples of this invasive habit? it is still or has been difficult to come by anyway.

    Hello Kris, thanks for the info as I wouldn't have known otherwise! Always wanted one so brought one a few years ago and has been growing slowly for me, but I have poor soil so understandable. Pretty sure mine is a low risk it seems ha ha. Goof to know I can't share it now so need to make sure it survives then lol.

    It's not invasive in the UK however it could be in some EU countries. Same reason we lost water hyacinth. Unfortunately our civil service is so EU focussed still after 40 years of doing exactly what the Commission told them that they automatically and slavishly follow the EU's lead. Hence Gunnera ban.

    Hi! Love your videos, thanks for the advice
    It’s not unlike me to get confused, so apologies, but to clarify, they are banning manicata? This is the reply I got from a local grower
    “No they havent, there are a huge amount of variants of Gunnera, the Gunnera Tinctoria has always been banned. We studied Gunneras for years as so many garden centres and nurseries were selling the tinctoria labelled as manicata. We contacted the RHS about this as they had put there name to a few aswell as having them in there gardens. To get round this they changed the name of the tinctoria to cryptica this year. The Cryptica has now been banned as it is a hybrid of the tinctoria, but the manicata which we have is not banned. We are licensed by DEFRA and have started selling our manicatas to trade to get the manicata back out there, hopefully this has cleared it up for you, Yes Yorkshire kris is wrong on this occasion, Kris is not APHA”

    Hey kris I hope you are well and thanks for the update! Quick question... One of my yuccas which I saved from going to the tip in the spring has just started to send up a flower spike.. Is this normal for this time of year? My others never flower in winter so has taken me by surprise 🤷‍♂️ should I leave it to flower or at this time of year should I chop the spike to help conserve it's energy through winter?

  • @GeorgesJungleGarden

    Kris with the quick news! As much as I do understand the tinctoria genes and their potential to create a fast-growing and hardy invasive plant, I do wonder if there’s any widespread evidence of cryptica being invasive? It doesn’t seem to self seed very easily or spread rapidly via rhizome in my experience. It would be interesting to hear if it has become an issue outside of isolated cases or whether this is a blanket decision due to the genetic potential only…

    • @YorkshireKRIS
      @YorkshireKRIS  7 месяцев назад +1

      I share your scepticism. I haven't seen any evidence of cryptica spreading in the wild but have seen tinctoria in Ireland

      Even the scientific paper from Shaw and the RHS last year stated that Gunnera x cryptica seeds are "rarely fully developed," as can be attested to by many a gardener trying in vain to make more Gunnera plants. Seems like an overabundance of caution given that it's quite difficult to tell the hybrid and the species apart. In my opinion, would it not make sense to try to eliminate just G. tinctoria from sale rather than take the beautiful hybrid with it, which logically would have less invasive potential? Obviously this is all new research ongoing but our Gunnera plants are being labelled guilty until proven innocent! The hybrid might have invasive potential, but the current evidence suggests otherwise.

    So, where G. manicata lives naturally, is it the true species, rather than a hybrid? If so, would it be possible/legal to import that stock, knowing it is not 'polluted' with tinctoria?

    • @YorkshireKRIS
      @YorkshireKRIS  7 месяцев назад +1

      Yes there's true manicata in habit. The hybrid naturally formed in UK where tinctoria and manicata were planted together.
