Aπό ξένο τόπο & Üsküdara Giderik'en - Greek & Turkish Song

- Violin by Alaa M, kanun by Gökhan Saraç, vocals & arrangement by Farya Faraji. This is a reworking of an earlier arrangement I made when I first started this channel, which can be found here: • Üsküdar and Apo Xeno -...
This is a very common song in the region of the Eastern Mediterranean, with virtually ever culture there having a version in their language. The exact origin is uncertain, and while the angry nationalists in every culture ferociously claim its theirs, as evidenced by the documentary “Whose Song is This?”, it is most likely that it was, from the very beginning, a mixture from the cultural melting pot of the late Ottoman Empire, having emerged in the 19th century.
My arrangement features an oud, kanun, violin and accordion, all shared instruments within the Greco-Turkish musical continuum.
From a foreign and distant place,
There came a girl, my light, 18 years old,
She doesn't come out into the door or the alley
Nor to my window, my light, to tell her a couple of words
She has black eyes and curly hair,
And on her cheek, she has a beauty spot
Won’t you lend your beauty spot to me, won’t you sell it to me?
I won’t lend it to you, I won’t sell it to you,
I want to keep it and let it torture you
Turkish lyrics and translation:
Üsküdar'a gider iken aldı da bir yağmur.
Kâtibimin setresi uzun, eteği çamur.
Kâtip uykudan uyanmış, gözleri mahmur.
Kâtip benim, ben kâtibin, el ne karışır?
Kâtibime kolalı da gömlek ne güzel yaraşır!
Üsküdar'a gider iken bir mendil buldum.
Mendilimin içine (de) lokum doldurdum.
Kâtibimi arar iken yanımda buldum.
Kâtip benim, ben kâtibin, el ne karışır?
Kâtibime kolalı da gömlek ne güzel yaraşır!
While going to Üsküdar, it began to rain
My scribe's frock coat is long, the tail of their coat is muddy
The scribe has been awoken from sleep, their eyes are bleary
The scibe is mine, I'm the scribe's, why do others interfer?
How the starched shirt fits to my scribe
While going to Üsküdar, I found a handkerfchief
I put Lokum in my handkerchief and fed it to him
While I was looking for my scribe, I found him nearby - Видеоклипы

Farya didn't you do this one before already? Excellent music anyways.
A friendly note for some misspellings on a couple of words in your introductions.
People were arguing and fighting to claim this song? Maybe it's like Greek and Turk nationalists fighting over a song that was set in an Egyptian city from some random apartment in Germany
Ağa sen Afşar Türklerine çok benziyorsun he
Its also very popular in Serbia as song named "Ruse kose curo imaš" 🇷🇸❤️👍
So, basically, this is a song about a Turkish cat from Istanbul and a Greek cat form Sifnos who fell in love and had kittens in Monemvasia. 🙂
No way really? So basically both countries merge together in a way

As a Cypriot I absolutely love this! Your Greek pronunciation is top tier - can't comment on the Turkish sadly (I aspire to learn it someday) but I love the idea in the lyrics! It makes me happy to see so many comments from Greeks and Turkish both feeling the unity
To answer his Turkish pronunciation is perfect. Love from Turkey

Turkey and Greece on their usual fist fight: hold our kebabs and gyros
😅❤❤
Greek-Turkish diplomacy for the past 100 years...Farya: "Hold my souvlaki/kebab"...LOL Good one.mate
But what is a gyros then ?
gyros is doner "doner" "gyros" "shavarma" they all mean "rotates/rotated" because it is cooked on a verticaly long stick that rotates horizontal. and in turkish you can say for x=food "(x) kebabı" and it wil mean it was cooked by roasting, frying or the doner way.@@ommsterlitz1805
@@Weedwizard600 People told me gyros is delicious grilled pork instead of grilled mutton for kebab
@@ommsterlitz1805 both gyros and shawarma derived from Turkish kebab but yes gyros is usually made with pork or chicken

We would be too strong united
The friendship between Turks and Greeks is truly wonderful. We lived together for centuries.
as opressor and infirior , that is not a way of life. Almost 180 revolutions from greeks until freedom
Honestly, are you drunk? 😀
I don't know how you came to that illusion but we Sarakatsani had to become nomads for about 400 years to flee from the turks.... and don't forget the slaughters in whole "Turkey" to the various Greek tribes. And what about North Cyprus? As long as the Turkish state does not admit its cruel actions how should we ever be friends?

While the fact that Greece and Turkey seem to be divided by what they have in common is the first thought I had, I feel like this applies to the Mediterranean as a whole.

@@Weedwizard600I cant say constantinopole but ı can say Constantine because Constantinopole means Constantine's city but now Contantine is not manage any monarchy and Constantine's owner is Turkey Republıc. İn Turkısh we dont say Constantine we say İstanbul
@@berrt0 Well, Constantinopole means city of Constantine, in the sense that he was the "founder" of the great city (in the place of Greek Byzantium, which in turn was in the place of the ancient Lygos). Constantine named the city as "New Rome". It took the name Constantinople after the death of the Constantine, so it was never called Constantinopole because Contantine was its ruler in power. But he was the founder, as the name suggests. Like now, Constantine was dead during the time when the city was being called Constantinople...So I dont see the reason why you dont like the name Constantinople...
