  • Audio-lingualism is based on behaviorism. Based on the idea that language is a set of habits, it emphasizes learning of new habits through mimicry and drills.

Audiolingualism really rings a bell on me. It made me recall my experiences in repeating what the teacher said and fill-in-the-blanks tasks, which many teachers still use today. It was also one of the strategies that helped me pronounce words when I was a young student.

After watching this video I learned that The primary goal of Audio-lingualism is to inculcate new language habits while also eliminating old ones. Audio-lingualism can be done in structural pattern using repetitive drills. This can also be helpful to students in learning the correct pronunciation of a word or a sentence. Thank you so much, Sir!

Audiolingualism made me understand my teachers' style in our language classes when I was a child. Usually, they employ the usual "fill in the blanks" or "repeat after me" strategies to ensure that we remember and memorize words, phrases, grammar, and pronunciation. The video allowed me to understand the practice and evaluate its strengths and weaknesses in language learning.

We were once children so we are used to learning language using mimicry (where we have to mimic what our teacher has to say), memorizing of set phrases, and overlearning. Although this has been criticized by Chomsky and the proponents of innatism, it is still very useful especially in pronunciation. For example, in foreign language classes, it would be very difficult to pronounce certain words that the teacher wants you to read unless they will allow you to repeat after them. It's important that teachers set habits while learners are exposed to language especially at an early age.

I can see why audio-lingualism is the common style to teach language, especially in pre-school and elementary. It's straightforward and is treated like drills to form a habit early on. This is also the case for those who study EFL to get used to their "toolbox" phrases they can use for conversational and negotiation purposes. It's one way to learn, but if overused, it cannot lead to meaningful language learning as it relies to rote memorization.

This is also effective as it is also the students are able to be corrected whenever they are committing mistakes by the immediate feedback of the teacher. Yet, the only problem here is that the students might learn only the form of these specific words or but not the meaning itself. Once, when I took part in an outreach program to help young and adult orphans read and understand simple vocabularies and phrases (i.e., I ate an apple, the sky is blue, my hands are dirty, etc.) I remember having the children mimic what I said multiple times so that they would memorize it. Back then, I was not one to think of how I taught them the language as long as I did my job properly. But now that I think of it, this approach is faulty in many ways because beginning language learners are forced to acquire language with very little to no context. The children in the orphanage did not understand even the basic vocabulary and phrases, and audiolingualism would do very little for them to acquire a new language because of the lacking explicit analogies it offers. Furthermore, their knowledge would be restricted to lower-order thinking skills (memorization) rather than higher-order thinking skills (meaning)
Nonetheless, this lecture was very enlightening. I am glad to put a name on an approach I remember using.

This is the most common but important strategy for elementary school students. It encourages students to become familiar with the phrases because they are required to repeat them numerous times with the teacher. This may appear to be beneficial, particularly in developing students' pronunciation skills, because it is a good practice activity; however, if the teacher uses it most of the time, it will become ineffective because it may lead to memorization rather than understanding the meaning, familiarizing the form, and applying in real world application.

I think moderate use of audio-lingualism in teaching language can be beneficial in learning but over- usage of this may lead to lack of critical thinking and over dependency among students. Nevertheless, this video is really helpful in understanding audio- lingualism, thank you! (Macapagal, II-3)

Although audiolingualism is said to be ineffective when it comes teaching and learning language, I personally believe that it is effective for developing and improving speaking and listening skills as it allows the students to learn and mimic language through tape players, language laboratories, or visual aids.

Audiolingualism can be a good practice for learners who are starting to learn the language. It targets mastery in speaking the language esp.in pronouncing the words through mimicry, memorization and others.

This is somehow familiar to me. During my elementary does we often used the 'repeat after me' activity by our teachers. Sometimes we also used tv to practice our oral skills.

I can say the same to some of the comments on how my teachers, and even my parents when I was young, would tell me to repeat what they're saying. It's a good practice to improve pronunciations, and it can be used in higher levels of education if some students are not familiar with the word.

Looking back, it's sad that my language classes when I was younger were conducted in a manner similar to this. As I observed as well, this is how most language learning apps operate. Nevertheless, it's nice to know that, at the very least, this is effective in teaching proper pronunciation. Drills are quite beneficial as well if the goal is the automaticity of skills. Most of my elementary teachers use this teaching approach in our English class. However, I find this approach ineffective since learners only tend to memorize the structure without really understanding the meaning or context of the sentence. Because of the strategy my previous teachers employed, I struggled, later on, to create meaningful sentences, especially during discourse.

Audiolingualism is an approach to language teaching inspired by the Behaviorism Theory. It uses drills and auditory materials to teach learners new language habits. However, it has been criticized by prominent theorists due to its ineffectiveness. Hence, it is only considered applicable to pronunciation training.

Audiolingualism is a nice method to use when teaching pronunciation but as the video said, it can also risk the students' learning when it comes to the meaning of words. I suggest that we, as teachers, should combine other method to this to make sure we can effectively teach language. (Christel Marie Pael, II-17)

Audio-lingualism is indeed helpful to hone students’ skills in terms of pronunciation and articulation. However, it has the tendency to prioritize form rather than meaning which should be kept in mind while in the use of this method for language teaching. (Laguros, II-3)

Audio-lingualism is frequently seen in lower grades. It may be helpful in instilling new language habits but teachers must be aware of using this kind of approach because they might be unconscious of manipulating the language and worse, students rely too much on them.
