    No teacher will use one single method, and that's not the purpose of this video. The reason is to make teachers aware of the range of possibilities they have to face the different situations in class. Audiolingual method covers one part of students' needs and thanks to this method teachers can foster ss learning english in one way or another. Wonderful lesson and thanks to Diane for such great knowledge being shared to everyone interested in second language learning.

    This method and the others like natural approach and total physical response are the best ones to teach those who are interested in speaking English, nevertheless, for those who want to learn the language deeply obviously must study Grammar deeply. So this method is perfect for people want to adquire the language and learn grammar subsconciously.

  • @roselynpadron3318

    It's an excellent teaching method because the teacher worked with different strategies, for example "role play" he was the salesman and the woman.

  • @Az_estm
    @Az_estm 4 года назад +5

    1. The teacher role-played the dialogue by himself. (Presentation). What can we use instead of role-play nowadays?
    2. Why did the teacher role-play the dialogue twice?
    3. Why didn’t the teacher have the students read from a copy of a dialogue?
    4. What was one of the main roles of the teacher in this lesson?
    5. Language learning is a process of habit formation. What does it mean?
    6. What does ‘backward buildup drill’ mean?
    7. Why is it important to prevent students from making errors?
    8. How do ‘a single slot substitution drill’ and ‘a question-and-answer drill’ work?
    9. Why did the students see the written version of the dialogue at the very end of the lesson?

    • @Az_estm
      @Az_estm 4 года назад

      The more often the students repeat something the stronger the habit and the greater is learning

    [2] I liked the drills (from the ALM) and I think we should use them in the classroom in order to provide students with more vocabulary.
    I liked when the teacher asked a student to perform the dialog.
    The way the teacher corrects the student is focusing on the ‘correct’ grammar structure seems to be a strong characteristic of this method.

    I am learning TESOL. This section is what I am learning right now. This is a great demo for me as well. I love this method the best. We don't use our native language, but it feels easier to improve our speaking skill and make pronunciation better. Moreover, it's less boring in comparison with grammar lesson through using native language. I am still English learner. I try the best to be an English teacher in Japan.

    The teacher is giving more emphasis to enhance the speaking and listening power. It is a very typical way. The teacher can present a real life scenario of that incident to his students. It may help the students' to understand the situation better and they can communicate with others in their practical life.

    • @zohurs
      @zohurs 10 лет назад

      But isn't he presenting a real life scenario?

    • @raisahasan2340
      @raisahasan2340 10 лет назад +1

      Yes sir, he is. but I want to show them a real life conversation between a homemaker and a salesman. Or I would have suggested them to go to a grocery or any kind of shop. Then, they can have the idea of 'seller and buyer' conversation. I would like to pursue them to write an experience of their own about this 'selling or buying' thing. It will be very helpful for the students because then they can relate their real life situation with the conversation. At the same time it will help them to develop their communicative skill. The most important thing is, if the whole idea proves effective for the learners then it will help the learners to meet with four main skills.

    WIthout grammar instructions and rules, communication could not be flexible in specific contexts. Real-life situations are full of unexpected expressions and verbal responses. This method may be suitable for children classes only at the discretion of the teacher. Besides, students would be exhausted to be forced all the time.

    I think the students enjoyed the class! The problem was the looong time spent on pronunciation accuracy, because the way you pronounce a word/sentence varies even within the same native country, imagine if you speak as a foreign language student. This is the accent charm. Homework was memorization Why???

    I second sakib on his points. and I also like to add a new point here.
    1. The learners should ask to create different real life based situations similar to this video.
    It will make the class less boring and they will have fun to learn a new language.

    [1] For a demonstrative lesson it is okay, but imagine this in progress in an everyday course. I guess, again, it is easy to use with the first levels but what about the upper-intermediate and advanced ones? I strongly feel that the communicative approach, mixed with other features from some other methods, is the best method, although we are in the post-method era, the communicative approach seems to be the most effective one.

    Áudio-Lingual surgiu a partir das idéias geradas pela psicologia behaviorista. Os alunos devem aprendê-la automaticamente sem parar para pensar, formando novos hábitos na língua alvo e superando os antigos hábitos de sua língua nativa. O conteúdo é sempre bastante estrutural, sendo apresentado em diálogos iniciais. Esses diálogos são aprendidos com memorização, imitação e repetição...

    If I were the teacher of this class I would provide the written form of the dialogue while the practice is going on. After completing practice, I would show a video of requesting and responding to the request in a different context. Then I would divide the whole class into pairs and ask them to choose a situation and prepare their own dialogue in the light of the practiced conversation. Appreciation would be given to them by clapping after each performance.

    My first impression is that ALM as demonstrated here is not suited for anything like a communicative language approach. There is much to be said for parroting as a pronunciation technique -- suprasegmentals especially -- but telling students what to say rather than eliciting what they want to say or ask or communicate about has real limits.

      If you use the Communicative Approach PPP framework to teach grammar, you will use the repetition, substitution, and transformation drills of ALM in the practice stage Mechanical drills section. They are useful for the memorization step of learning.

    • @julioilsoza4167
      @julioilsoza4167 5 лет назад +8

      If I might give my opinion, I would not consider it useless. Today´s teaching tendencies and methodologies rely on many principles of this method. Constant repetition and recycling language are effective for language teaching.

    I appreciate the effort of the teacher. However, it is a bit artificial to teach language this way. Students should be provided with some written texts too.

      I concur too, writing helps develop the skills which are required to be able to manipulate a language.

    Now audio-lingual method is kind of out-of-date. That is a methold commonly used in the time when the slide had not reach the general population.

    which book on how to teach English to esl's is best in ur opinion?

    • @leeielts4031
      @leeielts4031 6 лет назад

      They all have faults but some good ones are New Cutting Edge, English File 3rd Edition, New English File, Language to Go (Upper intermediate is better).
      Also Betty Azar's and Raymond Murphy's Grammar Books are okay too. Swann's Grammar in Use is good.
      Becoming a Language Teacher by Elaine Kolker Horwitz is good to learn to teach. Learning Teaching Scrivner and Jermery Harmer are good too.
      Parrot's Grammar for English Language Teachers.
      Learner English by Swann.
      The How to Teach series Thornbury et al.
      Teaching Unplugged is good.

      If it used for the pronunciation and fluency part of the class and it is handled well, it is a very fun and useful way to practice. It really helps students who suffer from anxiety when speaking.

    • They repeated the same thing again and again. But in my opinion.
    •: Repeating would be a good way to learn vocabulary items. But for Grammar, I think this method is not enough alone. Grammar teaching must be done in a way that includes instructions.

    I don't see the point. If they're at the level of understanding what the teacher is saying, why do they have to repeat simple sentences so many times? Is it about practicing pronunciation? If so, why asking the students to repeat instead of explaining one or two rules and giving examples?
    What's the principle behind this?

      Zangão das Quantas What I remember, not sure though, this method is mainly about reaching to the perfect pronunciation in the target language, grammar practice consists of a big part of it, too. It is rumoured that the method was once used to train spies to make them get the percent accent.

      Also it's great to learn the rhythm, patterns, and inflections of a language - plus the phrases that are actually used together in a real dialogue and how sounds slide together and change in everyday speech.
