NEW FLOORING RECOMMENDATION from someone in a trade.
    1. If your Hot Water Tank is less than 5 years old, shut off the water, hook up your garden hose to the tank drain at the bottom, and drain for half an hour or so before attempting to move it. Do this corner first, so you don't have any worries about scratching your new floors. An empty HWT weighs more than you might expect, and there could be sediment at the bottom of your tank depending on a few factors. Josh should tip the tank towards himself a little, then carefully "walk" it.
    2. Leave your hot water tank in place, cut the carpet in a square and install the new flooring up to the carpet remaining under the HWT. Save enough boards to install in the HWT corner when you replace the tank in a few years.
I love your videos, thank you for sharing your gardening/preserving/cooking adventures with us!

My neighbor has been growing dahlias for years in mid-Michigan with huge success. They are all in pots. He overwinters them in his garage and in the spring they go out on the driveway. They can barely fit their cars in but the flowers are spectacular. He's done this for about 20 years, and some are 6 feet tall. Every single year!

Becky, not sure if anyone has mentioned here yet or not, Luke just did a video about soils. He mentioned that amending your beds in fall do not help for spring. All the nutrients can get leached out over winter. Go check out the video. I think it was called something like 5 top soil mistakes. If that’s not it, just look at this recent uploads from this week. I learned a great deal from that one.

In a climate that freezes maybe not useful... but here in western europe ( oceanic influence) it’s best to put compost or manure in the fall. Before winter crops. Spring growing starts early feb, too. They need food but soil life is slow so they need a lot of fresh stuff.
Maybe that’s the confusion. Mi gardener is usa midwest i guess. Nothing grows during winter... his advice reflects that.

I use a couple standing fans that oscillate. My gramps taught me to use them because you don't necessarily want the 'wind' to be constant and only coming from one direction. I switch them around halfway through the day so they hit other shelves then switch them back to their original spos the next morning and repeat. I also vary between low and medium once the plants are a little bigger.

We put an old blanket on the floor and work the item onto the blanket, it’s most important to get the fronton leaving enough blanket to hold onto. There's nothing like seed starting time 🌿😊 PS- tips with the soil blocking (from a horticulturist) 1- bottom water with a narrow necked water can directly into the tray. Watering overhead with a hose is too much disruptive pressure, especially for tiny seed and too easy to over water, and inconsistent coverage. Try something like a misto sprayer or basic spray bottle mister from at least 12 inches away (like hairspray) for keeping the surface moist (not wet) before germination. 2) You can use a clean makeup or paint brush to gently brush off sediment on your seedlings in the future. Too much water is the easiest way to lose seedlings. Happy planting 🌱✌️

For a happy medium water sprinkler, may I suggest one of those two gallon pesticide sprayers, just for water or fertilized water, never to use with poisons. Wow Becky, you are going to need a flower field. Have you looked at the final planting distance for the dahlia's? Save your used chicken bedding, it will be full of nitrogen that can be used as a mulch before you cover over your beds next autumn. Or, add it to your composting system and use the compost as a mulch. Plant legumes, harvest them and leave the root ball to rot away underground. Legumes harvest nitrogen from the atmosphere and fix it in their root nodules all ready to be available in the soil. In fact, leave all the roots to rot down within the soil.

Good idea. Cover crops are great. In your area, you could plant them in late summer/early fall. Depending on what you plant they may die back in the winter. If not, just cut them down before they flower in early spring (we use a long hedge trimmer), and let them stay in the beds as a mulch. Just pull them back to plant. They'll eventually compost & add nutrients to your soil. I wouldn't dig or till them in, though, as it disturbs the microbiome that's in the soil.
Weed fabric releases toxins into your soil as they break down, plus they're expensive & labor intensive.

Last year was my first time starting dahlias from seeds and they form tubers pretty quickly even starting in 72 cell trays like yours. I had to hold mine a little too long last year before I planted them out and the sides of my 72 cells were pushed out and bursting!

The nitrogen was also used up by the soil biology breaking down all that organic matter. The phosphorus and potassium are up because of the organic amendments. Potassium gets taken up especially by root and fruit crops but phosphorus can take years to fix so you have to try to get very low or zero phosphorus fertilizers. Organic nitrogen should be added but sometimes you have to supplement it while plants are actively growing. The pH is higher because of the organic amendments like compost. However, compost does buffer the pH so it will behave more neutrally. The sulfur is low which makes the soil more alkaline. pH is still in range unless you are growing acid loving plants, then they may want more sulfur. Micronutrients are a little low. It depends on the plants and how sensitive they are. Compost is a goo source or phosphorus and micronutrients. In organic gardening, nitrogen is always the limiting factor of growth because it is hard to source and release is slow, so it is often not available when the plants need it. Interesting note, urea is an organic compound because it is basically carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and niriogen. It is chemically, an organic compound,. However, is not certified organic because of how it is made. Give it another year for the biology to settle down and the previous organic fertilizers you put into the garden to kick in. Consider planting legume cover crops. They will do better if you inoculate them first. They will help fix nitrogen for the next crop when they are tilled in at flowering. You have a lot of beds. If you don't need to have all of them in production, consider putting some of the beds in cover crops and use them as rotational beds for your cash crops.

Becky we too have a heavy duty work bench. We move it by laying out pipes or round garden steaks under each end first then slide two more under bench, add more as you roll it out. It rolls great, especially rolling it back in place avoiding buckling your new flooring. Another words, you’d be skidding your heavy work bench across the floor

We've been doing this and installing industrial strength wheel casters . It increases the height of the cabinet, but this has been another plus for me, making a better work height. Someday my children will thank me for being able to roll my junk to the curb.

I always start my seeds early as I’m able. And I make sure my flats are strong and sturdy- as I’ve got limited indoor light space- when they “graduate” I put them outside every day and inside at night.
I also successfully overwintered 3 pepper plants. .I lost 3. Prune rather harshly. Knock off all garden soil and Transplant them into seed starting mix so no gnats and bugs! Then water occasionally and put in a window. They sort of go into stasis until you start to feed and water more.
