The softer green bookshelves is a major improvement. Allow me to offer some alternative ideas. 1st. The elevated floor needs to be extended to the end of the window that is next to the spiral staircase. 2nd. Move the bookshelves to the side where the church panels are. Recall that the floor has been extended. The books still face the leather couch. Be sure that the length of the bookshelves match the length of the bar shelf. This is done to split the rooms equally in half which in turn creates 2 rooms. 3rd. The back of the bookshelves becomes a split coat closet and an open hook closet to throw scarfs and jackets on for guests who visit the bar on the adjacent wall. 4th. The green wall gets converted into a rosewood mahogany bar shelf with a bar table and small swivel bar chairs. Hand me a glass of grape juice ... ha. 5th. Extend those steps from the bookshelves to the window. The men at the bar will appreciate not having to find the small stairway.
Thanks so much for the detailed feedback and suggestions, Adam! 😊 We're glad you like the softer green for the bookshelves-definitely feels like the right choice. Your ideas are really interesting, especially the concept of splitting the space into two distinct rooms and creating a coat closet behind the bookshelves-very clever! The extended steps are also a great shout, especially for ease of access. And a rosewood mahogany bar shelf sounds luxurious! 🍷 We’ll definitely keep these ideas in mind as we refine the design. Thanks again for sharing!
Best of luck with your move today. Love your designs for the cottage. Only thing the stone walls in the bathroom might make it a bit chilly in the winter. really looking forward to what you do with the cottage.
Thanks so much! The stone walls design definitely have us thinking about how to keep the bathroom cosy in winter 😊 Really appreciate your support and can’t wait to show you what we do with the cottage!
Thank you so much, @craigpaton! 😊 We're really glad you love the ideas and especially the green bookshelves-they're a favourite of ours too! 🍃 There's something about adding green that brings a bit of life and calm to a room, isn't there? Thanks for the good luck wishes for tomorrow-it’s all feeling very real now! 😅 Fingers crossed everything goes smoothly!
@@craigpaton Thank you for the clarification, Craig. Ah, now that i pause to take a 2nd look, my eyes can see your handsome Scottish countenance. Have a restful weekend. from 45 miles south of Modesto, CA. on 10-12-24. Sat. around 6: 30 pm. pacific time.
As a tempary solution you could place oriental carpet over the existing wall to wall... You are never boring by the way! Good luck with the cottage. Let the good times roll.
Thanks, HossMan48! That’s a great suggestion for making the space feel a bit more “us” without committing to any big changes just yet-an oriental rug could add some nice character. 😊 And thank you for the encouragement; we’re thrilled you’re enjoying the journey with us. Here’s to more good times ahead! 🥂
Thank you so much, @shonalogan1581! We’re excited too! 😊❤ It’s all starting to feel real now-can’t wait to take you all along on the next part of this adventure!
Thanks, @Dianaemanuel! 😊 We do love the darker tones in our current home too-they’ve got such a cozy feel! We're going for lighter, airy natural tones in the cottage (for now, at least 😄), but who knows? We might end up tweaking the designs down the line! 😅 Thanks for the suggestion!
I like the idea of the whiskey snug, but more than that I would like a wider set of stairs leading down from the upper to the lower levels. I feel it needs to be a bit more "grand." Can't wait to see what you eventually are able to do!
Thanks, Bob! We love the idea of a whiskey snug too! 🥃 As for the staircase, we’re definitely torn. We’ve been thinking about replacing the spiral staircase with something more conventional, but we do love its quirkiness! If we decide to extend into the attic space, a split staircase could be the way forward. Still undecided, but we totally get where you’re coming from about making it feel a bit more "grand." Can’t wait to show you what we end up doing! 😄
I was also wondering about the spiral staircase. It does seem a bit out of place. I love the design ideas so far. Keeping the wooden divider piece from the church is a great idea. I bet you're excited to actually get into the cottage to really see what you would like to do to make it yours. Your plans and ideas may evolve over time. Good luck and congratulations.
Thanks so much! We’re definitely excited to get into the cottage and see how everything feels in person-it’s likely the designs will evolve once we're in! The spiral staircase has been a big topic of debate; it’s quirky but may not stay. And we love that wooden divider piece too-it adds such character. Thanks for the kind words and support! 😊
Thanks for the suggestion, Jo! 😊 We did look into underfloor heating, and we agree it would be amazing for regulating the heat. The only thing holding us back is the idea of digging up the concrete floor when there's nothing wrong with it at the moment. We're still on the fence though, so never say never! 😄 Glad you’re loving the moody design-we’re excited to see how it all comes together! 🙌
@@TwoMenTheirDog we did the wet underfloor heating and then caithness stone flags as big as gravestones…. I made the mason turn them over to make sure he hadnt been down the churchyard at night. Genuine Caithness was only 10% pricier than Chinese and much better quality but the variation in depth means you need a really proper stonemason to fit them which pushes the overall cost up. Recommend if you went this route finding out who the National Trust locally use - they will know what they are doing. If you didnt want to dig up the floor you could consider the dry electrical UFH, - dogs love any UFH esp as they get older and it avoids rads spoiling the look in an old cottage and using up wall space.
Wow, Caithness stone flags as big as gravestones-that sounds incredible! 😄 Love the thought of making sure the mason wasn’t sneaking off to the churchyard! We’ve definitely been weighing up underfloor heating options, and your advice about checking with the National Trust for experienced masons is brilliant. We hadn’t considered dry electrical UFH, but it sounds like a great alternative, especially for keeping Benji comfy as he gets older 🐾. Thanks so much for sharing your experience-it’s really helpful!
Nice to see you both back so soon !! Love all your ideas about the design concept , it is still is in the style of an old Cottage. The wooden floor is for me a winner and also the space for the Bookcase annex whisky corner ! I really hope that the Chesterfield is fitting in the room because that will be a showstopper ! The Fireplace is much better with a wood burner and safer then a open fire. We did bought a electric fire instead of a real one because we have two dogs and three cats....so now we can enjoy the Fireplace without worrying about safety. And must say that the new models electric fires are almost like a real fire and you can heat up the room if you like to, but we have central heating so we don t never use that option. Bathroom is looking amazing and hopefully there will big old stone wall behind all the tiles ! Your plans are looking promising and like you said maybe some of those ideas are not working because of the space or other reasons, but you can take so much inspiration of those ideas, and sometimes the solutions are come up in a second. The decoration of your new house is the best part of moving for me, so let the surprises coming to your front door ! Nice to here that you are a interior designer, i work for more then 30 years as a office furniture designer and work with a lot of Architects all of the world, and also design interiors for ships and big theaters , so you may understand that I was pleasant surprised ! Hope that all you dreams may com true, and we will see the Cottage in a week time from now !! Wis you both a great week and see you soon !!
Wow, @MrHuismeester, your experience sounds incredible! I’m humbled that someone with such a rich background in design enjoys our concepts. I’ve only been doing interior design as a side gig for a few years alongside my main job, so it's inspiring to hear from someone who's been in the industry for over 30 years. I love your suggestions, and you're absolutely right that some ideas might need to evolve due to space or other factors. But as you said, inspiration and solutions often come when least expected! The idea of an electric fire is actually really appealing too-definitely safer with pets around. Thanks so much for sharing your expertise and for the encouragement!
Good morning ,,Oh ,how i like those pock up for the lounge and the bath room ,, I learned a lot about design of interior spaces,, and thanks for the video Stunning ,,Well done so far Keep going ,Cant wait for the next one ..Peter
Good morning, Peter! Thanks so much for the kind words! 😊 We’re really glad you liked the concepts for the lounge and bathroom. It’s amazing to hear you’ve taken something from our design process-that’s what it’s all about! We’re excited to keep going and share more of the journey with you. Thanks for the support, and the next one’s coming soon! 🎥👀
Love what I see of the new place so far. Here's a wild thought, turn the church banister on end on use on other side and mKe an Industrial rail and hand rail. Paint the steel pole and rail on stairs and new railing a vintage dark pewter. And paint the paneling a vintage Oxblood. Just my thought. Lol... I do love both of your choices and taste. Enjoy your new adventure.
Thanks, Rick! That’s an interesting idea-turning the church banister into something industrial could be a cool touch! Love the idea of vintage pewter and oxblood; sounds like it would add some real character to the space. We’ll definitely keep it in mind as we move forward with everything. Appreciate your creative input, and we’re excited to see how it all comes together! 😊🙌
Thank you so much! We're really excited about the bathroom ideas too. 😊 It’s great to have the freedom to experiment with the space and make it our own!
I’m really looking forward to the next episode to see the cottage. The house you’re moving from is stunning so I can’t wait to see how you design your new home, I love your ideas. Youre both very talented and Adam’s plants really bring something special to each room.
Thank you so much! We're excited to show how we'll put our stamp on the cottage! Adam's plants will definitely have a place in each room 🌿😊 Can't wait to share the next episode!
What are you boys doing in my box on a Wednesday!!! I am blessed 🎉 the floor-ceiling cabinetry is inspired…love it! Those fabric/leather wingbacks that current owner has in that room would be perfect in your whisky snug…but snug would be the operative word given the size 😂 That bathroom is one to aspire to…I’ve everything crossed for an exciting discovery when you take the tiles back!xx
Haha, @thefabulouswomanwho, we couldn’t resist a midweek surprise! 🎉 So glad you like the cabinetry ideas-we're pretty excited about those too. And yes, those fabric/leather wingbacks would be absolutely perfect in the snug! Wonder if the sellers would consider leaving those armchairs behind! 😅. As for the bathroom, fingers crossed for that exciting discovery-here’s hoping for some gorgeous stone behind those tiles! 🤞 Thanks for your lovely comment! xx
Great content guys. Were hooked! One suggestion, if you move the three steps in the lounge to the far left-hand side wall as you look at them, firstly they won't be a focal point when looking down the room as they currently are now. It will give the look of a continuous flow using them and walking down the hall as you exit the room. The church wooden thingy, move it over to the right hand side wall. Loving your ideas though. Great channel. Have a wonderful week. Howard & Noah 😊
Thank you so much, Howard & Noah! 😊 We're thrilled to have you hooked and really appreciate the thoughtful suggestion! Moving the steps to the far left could definitely help with flow, and shifting the church “wooden thingy” to the right sounds like a great idea. We love playing around with the layout, so we'll definitely keep your advice in mind as we settle in. Hope you both have a wonderful week too! 🏡✨😊
Thanks so much, @GoBlue79! Haha, Benji definitely approves of anything as long as he’s got his blanket to curl up on! 🐾😂 We're loving the idea of the whiskey snug too-it’s one of our favourite spaces in the design concepts. Cheers to cosy evenings ahead! 🥃
Lovely idea, you are obviously a talented designer! Lots of luck with the move, they can be unpleasant but I'm sure you will get through it! Good wishes coming your way from Palm Springs California! 😍
Thank you so much, Robcat! 😊 Your kind words mean a lot, especially coming all the way from sunny Palm Springs! ☀️ We’re definitely bracing ourselves for the chaos of the move, but kind wishes like yours are keeping us going. Thanks for the support and for following along! 😍
Thanks so much, @murialpack5350! 😊 We're crossing our fingers for some gorgeous stonework hiding behind that plaster too-it would add so much character! Can’t wait to see what we uncover once we start tearing things back. 🤞
Thank you so much, @RheaHolms! We're really excited to bring our ideas to life and share the journey with you. Fingers crossed it all comes together! 😊
Another great video and I love your design ideas! This cottage is going to look very cozy on those long winter nights. I love that you are both into repurposing neat older pieces rather than new. Between the two of you, there are tons of great ideas that will make your new home. I also really appreciate that you have a chair just for Benji!!! You two are both really handsome but Benji has stole my heart and I love how much you love him ❤
Thank you so much! 😊 We love repurposing older pieces and making them feel fresh again, so happy you like that. Benji definitely has his own chair, he’s got us wrapped around his paw! 🐾❤️ So glad you're enjoying the journey with us!
Haha, good point, @SharynWilliamson! That spiral staircase might be a challenge in our 80s! 😂 We’ve definitely thought about replacing it with something more practical down the line-although it’s quirky, it might not be a forever solution. Sending love to you and Rosie! 🐾❤
That's a great point, @davidwiseman7774! The practicality of getting furniture upstairs has crossed our minds too. While the spiral staircase adds some quirkiness, it definitely has its challenges. We’re still weighing up our options for something more functional!
@@TwoMenTheirDogyou could have an escape Velux upstairs maybe? Building regs might require a means of escape if the staircase isnt closed off by doors both top and bottom. If you have an escape Velux window (basically a large Velux you can get out of), you also have to have steps up partway to it (so children could get out) but we were able to use a portable horse mounting block (!) and since no children stayed it went back in the barn! The advantage is that the large size of the Velux means you can get some of the larger items through it.
That’s a brilliant suggestion about the escape Velux! We hadn’t considered that option, but it makes a lot of sense-especially with the added bonus of getting larger items through it! 😄 Building regs are always a bit tricky with older cottages, so we’ll definitely look into whether it’s required for us. Love the idea of using a portable horse mounting block too-that’s so clever! Thanks so much for the tip, really appreciate it!
Thank you so much, Cynthia! 😊 We’re really hoping everything fits as planned too-fingers crossed! 🤞 We're so excited for the move and can’t wait to share the next steps with you. Your support means a lot! ❤
Thank you so much, @paulpuckerinGM! 😊 We're really excited about how the designs are shaping up and can’t wait to see them come to life. Benji is definitely going to have a blast exploring his new surroundings! Thanks for all your support-means the world to us! ❤🐾
Thanks, @cherrybird2010! I think you're referring to the spiral staircase supports-painting them black could definitely add a bold, industrial touch. We hadn’t considered that before, but it may just work well with the overall vibe! We’ll definitely think about it!
Underfloor heating is definitely something we’re considering! It would be amazing, especially with those cold Scottish winters. We’re still weighing the options, though-it might involve digging up the current floors. Thanks for the suggestion! 😊
Guys, your thoughts on the fireplace are very wise. I have only had wood fired heating in 3 homes over the last 30 years (and cooking in 2 of them I.e Aga). I've jumped in with this comment before the end of the discussion, but, the main advantage is that the wood burner you've shown, above all else, will be a far more efficient source of heating. I know you have central heating too, but any open flue/chimney set up will waste a lot of heat.. best of all, that big chunky beam looks great!
Thanks so much for the insight, Chris! That’s really helpful to hear, especially from someone with so much experience living with wood-fired heating. We’re leaning heavily towards the log burner for exactly those reasons-efficiency and reducing wasted heat are key, especially in the colder months. Plus, we love the idea of creating a cosy atmosphere, and that beam will definitely add a lot of character to the room. Appreciate you jumping in before the end of the discussion-always love hearing thoughts like this! 😊
I like it! Open fires create a lot of dust so you may be better off with a wood burning stove and they can certainly belt out some heat! Good luck with the move guys ❤
Thanks, @MsRiverdee! We've been hearing the same thing about open fires creating a lot of dust, and we agree that a wood-burning stove would definitely be more economical in the long run. It seems like the better option for sure! 😊
Great tip! A wood burner with a window sounds perfect-best of both worlds for safety and still being able to enjoy the fire. Definitely something to keep in mind, especially with Benji around 🐾🔥. Thanks for the advice!
Thanks for the comment, @connycatlady7429! 😊 We totally get where you’re coming from. We have an en suite with a large walk-in shower that we’ll use most of the time, but it’s nice to have the option to soak in a bath now and again. We’re thinking of adding an over-bath shower in the main bathroom too, so it offers the best of both worlds! 🚿🛁 😊
Thanks for jumping in, @davidwiseman7774! 😊 Yes, that’s exactly right-the en suite has a large walk-in shower, and the main bathroom will be for guests, but we love the idea of keeping a bath for those relaxing moments too! 😌
Thanks, @barneygoddard6421! 😊 We're glad you agree. Even though we have a walk-in shower in the en suite, we love the idea of keeping a bath in the main bathroom-it's great to have the option to enjoy a relaxing soak now and then! 🛁
Thanks so much, @billisherenc! Although we've gone for lighter, more airy natural tones in the designs for the cottage, we do love darker tones too-our current home has quite a few of them. Who knows, we may end up tweaking the designs yet! 😂 Thanks for the good wishes on the move, and for your support! 🙌
Suggestion...perhaps paint the circular staircase...its very stark and very white.. :0. ..perhaps black...or black with a bit of green in to tone it off the pure black :). Looking forward to the renno! Regards from Texas
Thanks, @CatherineH.-gf7mm! You're not alone-quite a few people have suggested replacing the spiral staircase, especially since we have a much nicer vintage black iron one in the kitchen. But we're still undecided, and painting it might be a good way to keep it while softening the stark white look. We’ll definitely consider adding that bit of green too! 😊 Appreciate the suggestion! Regards from Scotland! 👩🎨✨
Thanks, @davidwiseman7774, you're definitely in the "replace it" camp! 😄 We're hearing both sides on this one-some want it gone, while others are suggesting tweaks like painting it. We're still undecided but open to options. It'll all come down to what works best with the space!
Thanks so much, Heather! 😊 We're so glad you found our channel and that you're enjoying the vlogs. Benji will be thrilled to hear he's been called "bonnie" - we think so too! 🎉🐾 Can't wait to share more of our journey with you!
You're very talented, good luck with the move, don't envy you. Love love that bathroom - maiden hair ferns do really well in wet areas but I'm sure Adam has already got that figured out 🪴
Thank you so much, Joanne! 😊 We’re definitely bracing ourselves for the move-it’s going to be a busy one! So glad you love the bathroom design. Funny enough, we hadn’t thought of maidenhair ferns, but now that you’ve mentioned it, they’ll be perfect for those wet areas! 🪴 Appreciate the tip, and Adam’s already on it!
Hi Leila! 👋 Sending greetings to Denmark! So glad you love the cottage-it’s such a special place for us, and we’re excited to share the journey with you. Thanks for watching! 😊
How about moving the church balustrade to the other side in front of the bookshelves, no danger of tipsy falls then and the stairs can go to the other side. Just caught a couple of your vids and already hooked lol
Thanks so much, Lindsay! That’s actually a great idea about the balustrade! Moving it could definitely help with the safety concerns, and shifting the stairs is something we’ve been contemplating too. So glad you’re enjoying the videos and are hooked already-plenty more to come! 😄
Am loving the mockup of the bathroom, and the lounge area I think would be great if you had the whiskey and book snug area added to it, but as you say, it all depends on the space. Wishing you well for the move.
Thanks, @sandradon2958! 😊 We're so glad you love the bathroom mockup! The whiskey and book snug is definitely tempting-it would be such a cosy addition. You're absolutely right, though, it all comes down to space! Fingers crossed everything comes together. Thanks for the well wishes! 🤞🍀
This is so interesting, your designs and reading everyones comments...only thing that hit me was the t.v. hidden in a cabinet? My husband has a massive t v...had it when i met him, i cant wait till it breaks, so i can replace with a small hidden away one xx
Thanks, @CarolineMitchell-v1r! 😊 Haha, I completely get you on the TV dilemma! 🤣 We’ve definitely been considering ways to make the TV less of a focal point, maybe even tucking it away or hiding it when it’s not in use. I think Adam would miss having a big screen though, so it might be a battle! 😂 Let’s hope your husband's TV has a "mysterious breakdown" soon! 😄
@TwoMenTheirDog yep, I was wondering if your sofa would fit on the wall you intended for the t.v at least you could see the fire...but looking forward to seeing how you boys arrange it all...Best wishes on this beautiful day 😀
Thanks, @CarolineMitchell-v1r! 😊 Yes, as much as we'd love to have the sofa facing the fire or on that wall, we’re not sure it will fit either. But, like you said, once we’re in, we’ll have a better sense of the space and can figure it out! Fingers crossed we can make it work-appreciate the good wishes! 🌞
Thanks for the comment, @davidwiseman7774! We’ve definitely been thinking about the spiral staircase. It’s quirky, which we kind of love, but we’ve also been considering replacing it with a more conventional one, especially if we end up extending into the loft space. It’s still undecided, but your point is definitely valid!
@@TwoMenTheirDog I am sure you will make a smart choice. You certainly seem to have your head screwed on. We had plans for our house and we lived in it for a good six months before doing any major work, mainly waiting for trades. First of all we changed the heating system which was very old and upgraded the electricity. But one of the walls we planned to knock down we ended up keeping and we made better use of some of the existing spaces. When you are actually living in a place you get a better feel for what works best for you.
Thanks, @davidwiseman7774! That’s really solid advice. We’re definitely taking our time with the bigger changes, and I think you’re spot on-once we’re living in the cottage, we’ll have a much better feel for the space and how to make the most of it. It's good to hear that some of your initial plans shifted once you settled in, makes me feel better about being flexible with our ideas! 😊
The living room is a great renovation. Luv the hearth. Yikes, there are not enough single cushion chairs for a couple to visit. Place 2 in front of the fireplace with a tea table between them. That white chair for Benji will never stay clean since he doesn't bathe each morning. Consider Autumn colors. Autumn doesn't show the dirt.
Thanks so much, Adam! 😊 You’re absolutely right-there’s no way that chair would stay white for long with Benji around, haha! 🐾 He always has his dog blanket over it anyway, so it’s probably not even worth reupholstering. We do love the idea of autumn colours, though-they’re perfect for a cosy cottage vibe and very forgiving with dirt! 🍂 We’ll definitely be tweaking the designs as we go. Great suggestion on adding two chairs in front of the fireplace-sounds like a lovely setup!
Thank you, Johnny, for the invitation (at didi. 30 min.: 0 sec.) to comment. This bonus vlog is packed with interesting ideas. The draft concept of the renovated bathroom (br.) has a pleasant appearance. However, consider these other options with an attached justification. 1) U stated that this br. is for guests. So, the need for a copper bathtub (your personal preference 4 yourself) is an unnecessary expense since U stated that U would not use it. 2) To have the toilet in the center of the br. is a design error in any era of construction. 3) Hence, because the tub/shower combo with glass sliding doors is an efficient amenity (and easy to clean), merely turn the tub against the window wall. That horizontal placement will provide the larger visual space you want. You may have to replace the tub for a shorter one which are inexpensive at a 2nd Life construction warehouse. 4) Naturally, remove some of the wall to insert a horizontal window 1 foot shorter than the tub on both sides. 5) That larger window will allow Adam to make (on the outside of the room) a small privacy garden with flowers for viewing while showering or bathing. I would add (optional) a mini waterfall with gold fishes swimming in the blue plastic pond that is elevated to match the level of the tub. And the larger window will make the br. appear larger. 6) The toilet needs to be recessed in that clever alcove as near to the wall as possible to afford privacy. 7) And the sink needs to move to the opposite wall where the old tub was. There is plenty of wall to allow for your double ceramic bowls to rest on a counter with sliding door (the br. is too narrow for ear doors) cupboards that you show. 8) Absolutely luv your lamps. Leave the ones in the alcove where the toilet belongs. Add 2 lamps beside the tub which would be against the window wall. And add 2 lamps above the sink bowls against the long right wall. 9) Change the color of the cement around the stones from white to a soft gray to allow the flavor of the stone's hues to dazzle your guest.
Thank you so much, Adam! We'll definitely consider your amazing ideas. A lot of what you suggested makes perfect sense and could really elevate the space. The logistics and costs of moving the plumbing-especially with 3ft thick stone walls-will definitely play a big part in what’s possible. But once we're in and can properly assess the space, we'll have a much clearer idea of what we can do. The idea of a privacy garden outside the bathroom window is especially lovely. We really appreciate your detailed thoughts and creative suggestions! Thanks again for your support. 😊
Thanks so much for jumping in, @KewiCampervan! 😊 We agree-@AdamofCA has some truly genius ideas! Moving the toilet to where the sink is would be such a game changer if we can make it work. It’s all going to come down to the layout and what’s feasible once we’re in the cottage, but it’s great to have so much inspiration!
@@TwoMenTheirDog Here are some words of encouragement about moving the toilet. 1. The pipeline already exists. The task is to exchange the size of the drain pipe from 1 inch to a 6 inch. A very valuable advantage. 2. To inspire you two He-Men (when you have a free afternoon on a 3-day weekend), take a look at young Bradey's work at raising voyagers on youtube. That 30-year adult tackles stone walls 2 feet wide. He is a BEAST with a chisel and a hammer. Notice that he bought a chisel with thick metal square top to protect his hand from being slammed by the blows of the hammer. His earlier videos shows his learning curve about shaping replacement stones, as well as his theories about making holes in a stone wall to avoid a collapse and about the process to minimize moisture and rainwater seepage.
Thanks so much for the encouragement and the tips! 😊 The existing pipeline definitely makes the job feel more doable. We’ll have to check out Bradey’s videos on RUclips-it sounds like he’s got some great insights, especially when it comes to stonework. We’ll keep those techniques in mind when we get to tackling the bigger projects. Thanks again for the advice and support!
Wood burners are amazing and put out a lot of heat. I used to have to crack open a window or two to let some of the heat out at times. And an hour before bed I'd open all the inside doors and let the heat into the bedrooms. It's hard to tell from the angle in the photo, but how much standing room will you have in front of the built in cabinetry/whisky bar. I'm thinking of that drop that will be behind you. I'm looking forward to seeing the cottage transformed.
Thanks for sharing your wood burner experience! 😊 We’ve heard they can really heat up a space-cracking open a window sounds like a good idea! As for the standing room in front of the cabinetry/whisky bar, we’ve still got to figure out the layout, but we’ll definitely keep that drop in mind. It’s a work in progress, but we’re excited to see how it all comes together! Thanks for following along!
Hopefully you’ll built decent step instead of the dinky three little steps, that look like trap for broken ankle.Whatever happens, you’ll make it as beautiful as your first house.
Thanks, Sanya! 😊 You’ve got a great point about the steps-we hadn't actually thought about completely replacing them with wider ones, but it totally makes sense. Safety first, especially in an old cottage! We'll definitely be looking into that as we go along. And thank you so much for the lovely words about our first house, that really means a lot! We’ll do our best to make this one just as beautiful.
Fellow upcycler here, we’re about to start building a media wall, similar to your built in cabinet, made from free pine wardrobes I’ve been collecting, picked up from marketplace 😊
That's fantastic, @Torridgemaid! Always great to meet a fellow upcycler! 😊 Your media wall project sounds amazing, especially using those free pine wardrobes from Marketplace! It’d be great to see some pics of your upcycled cabinet once it’s finished. It’s always so satisfying to give old items a new life-good luck with the build!
Really like your bathroom ideas. Hopefully, you will find the beautiful stone walls underneath the plaster. Not sold 100 percent on the living room yet.
Thanks, Barney! We’re really hoping to uncover some of that beautiful stonework too-fingers crossed! 😊 As for the living room, I get what you mean. Judging by Adam's expression in the video, even though he says he likes it, I don’t think he’s 100% sold on it either-haha! We might make a few tweaks along the way. Appreciate your honesty, and it's always good to hear different perspectives!
I think you should think about future proofing the place with your renovations, putting the dog in a nice tall free standing bath might be fine now but you never know what’s around the corner, and as it’s not the bathroom you use I would have thought a nice double shower would be great instead 😊
Great point, Dave, and we totally get where you’re coming from! We actually already have a large shower in the ensuite, but you’re right-future-proofing is something we’ve thought about too. 😊 It’s also nice to have the option of a bath for those relaxing moments, but we’re considering adding an over-bath shower in there as well, so we can have the best of both worlds! Thanks for the thoughtful input! 🙌
Thanks for your honesty, @suzannegagne8692! 😄 We do like the quirkiness of it, but you’re right-it might not suit everyone’s taste. We’ve toyed with the idea of replacing it with something more traditional, especially if we end up extending. Time will tell!
Thank you for the update, guys, if there is somewhere where is a bit too dark is there any possibility you could put a ve Lux window in or possibly put another window in the wall
Thanks for the suggestion, @rontanser9369! We're actually thinking of adding French doors to bring in more light. There are Velux windows in the upstairs rooms already, but unfortunately, it wouldn’t be possible to add them in the downstairs rooms. French doors are definitely the dream though-it’ll be a challenge with the 3ft thick stone walls, but worth it! 😊
@@TwoMenTheirDog very good idea having French doors just a thought if it’s an incredibly windy spot you are in it might be better to have the doors opening inwards if you can if not if they open outwards make sure there’s a very sturdy clip to tie them back otherwise they could be swinging around in the wind
Great point! 🌬️ We'll definitely consider inward-opening French doors, especially since the cottage is in a fairly exposed spot. We'll be making sure the doors are sturdy and secure either way, but thanks for the heads-up! We’ll keep that in mind when finalising the design. Appreciate the advice! 😊👷♂️🔨
Thanks, @rileymccoy8040! We’d absolutely love underfloor heating, but it would mean digging up perfectly good concrete floors. We’re still very much open to the idea though and might just go for it. It’s definitely something we’re considering as part of making the cottage cosy and efficient!
Thanks, @davidwiseman7774! We completely agree-stone floors with underfloor heating would make them so inviting. We’re definitely considering it as an option, especially for those colder winter months. It might just be the perfect solution!
in floor heating would be amazing. just wondering why all of the "wood" have different stains? the stair steps, the wooden wall, the reclaimed wood on the r.v. wall, the little wooden storage unit below the t.v. the wooden floor, and the vintage looking table?
Thanks, @rileymccoy8040! Underfloor heating would be amazing! As for the mix of wood stains, these are just mock-ups, so it's likely things will change as we go along-for example, we may stain the stair steps to match other wood elements. We like to experiment with different tones to create depth and character, but we’ll definitely fine-tune it once we’re settled in. 😊
Love your ideas, its a shame you cant have your sofa facing the log burner, nothing more relaxing than sitting watching the fire with a drink in hand on a cold winters night
Thanks, @tracy2092! We’re totally with you-there’s nothing better than watching the fire with a drink in hand on a cold night! 🍷🔥 Our initial thought was to have the sofa facing the log burner, but we’re just not sure if it will fit. Once we’re moved in and can properly assess the space, we’ll know for sure. 🤞 Fingers crossed it works out!
Thanks, @tracy2092! 😊 Good luck with your move to Aberdeenshire next month-it’s going to be an exciting adventure! 😱 If you need any moving tips or just want to chat about the process, feel free to reach out. Wishing you all the best! 🏡✨🐾
I WAS WONDERING, IF THE PREVIOUS OWNERS, OR PERHAPS NEIGHBORS KNOW WHO DID THE BUILD ON YOUR COTTAGE.. PERHAPS THEY KNOW WHATS BEHIND THE WALLS, IF THEY GOT RID OF THE STONE....OR...JUST A THOUGHT.
That’s a great thought, Sherri! 😊 We’d love to speak with the previous owners at some point and hear what they know about the cottage’s history. In the meantime, we’re chatting with some of the longtime locals in the village to gather as much info as we can-they’ve been here for years and have a lot of stories to share! It’s like piecing together a puzzle of the cottage’s past. 🏡
Hi guys, I’ve only recently discovered your channel. It’s an absolute delight. I’m glad I can come along on your journey. That’s a life I would’ve loved to have lead a little too old now.😅 in the future, I would love to know a little more about your story. Thanks guys. Graham.
Hi Graham, thank you so much for your kind words! 😊 We're thrilled to have you with us on this journey, and it's never too late to chase after those little dreams, no matter your age. We're always happy to share more about our story-stay tuned, and feel free to ask us anything! Thanks again for your support, and we hope you continue enjoying the content! All the best, Johnny and Adam 😊🏡
The step is a nice feature, helps make one space feel like two. The spiral stair case is gone. Ugly and impractical and it’s an eye score in a room to relax in, it’s awful. Carpet is cosy, wooden floor is cold especially were the cottage is located. I’m sure you have plenty of other spaces within the cottage for wooden floors but when it comes to getting cozy, you need carpet in the living room!
Thanks, @SamM-oh2cx! Appreciate your thoughts. 😊 We actually quite like the quirkiness of the spiral staircase, but there’s a much nicer one in the kitchen, so we’ve definitely considered replacing the one in the living room with something more conventional. If we extend up into the loft space, a regular staircase would be a must! As for the flooring, you make a great point-carpet does add that cosy feel, especially in a cottage like ours. We're still weighing up whether to keep wood floors or opt for some soft carpet. Decisions, decisions! 😅
Thanks for sharing, @davidwiseman7774! That's a great point-solid floors with rugs and soft furnishings can definitely create a cosy vibe too. We love that mix of practicality and warmth! It’s interesting to hear how different countries approach creating that homely feel. 😊
Thanks, @davidwiseman7774! 😄 The spiral staircase definitely seems to divide opinion! We love its quirky charm, but it’s true-it might not be the most practical choice long-term. We’ll see where we land with that decision!
Adam's face looks like he might be your most difficult client! He's not naturally very smiley, is he! Are you guys married? How long have you been a couple?
Haha, @davidwiseman7774, Adam’s definitely the more serious one between us, especially when it comes to design decisions! He’s always thinking things through carefully, but once he’s sold on an idea, he’s all in! And no, we’re not married (yet), but we’ve been together for around 5 years. 😊 Thanks for your comment-it made us chuckle!
@@TwoMenTheirDog look forward to the wedding then! We had our civil partnership in 2011, converted to a marriage in 2014, the only good thing that David Cameron ever did! Our being married enabled me to have French citizenship post Brexit and makes inheritance so much simpler in France. So nice to see couples like you guys on youtube, a refreshing change!
Thanks, David! That sounds like an amazing journey you and your partner have had. Who knows, maybe a wedding will be on the cards for us someday too! 😊 It's great to hear how marriage helped with French citizenship and simplifying things-definitely something to think about for the future. We really appreciate your support, and it's lovely to connect with like-minded couples! 💍❤️
Love your ideas, have you thought about possibly mounting the TV above the fireplace on the stone wall, that would be so cosy in the winter with the log burner roaring away. I guess it all depends on whether there is space to turn the sofa. Just a thought. Hope Friday goes to plan guys 👍
Thanks so much, @maxcopen4676! 😊 We had actually thought about mounting the TV above the fireplace too-it was our initial idea! But we’re just a bit unsure if the heat from the log burner might cause issues. We'll definitely be assessing the space once we’re in and seeing if it works. Fingers crossed for Friday! 🤞
@@TwoMenTheirDog Altho the tv above the fireplace has merit for being cozy with the brown leather sofa facing it, the electronics in the screen are not capable to withstand the long durations of upward beams of fire heat (as U know, heat rises). The tv manufacturer will attest to that fact online. Tv as well as computers require a lot of space for cool ventilation. So much so, that computers include a fan in the processor. Another tip, which i think Adam will enjoy, is to place a room thermometer (which i have hanging on the wall in every room of my California 2-bedroom bungalow ... our summers average 115 degrees in July and August) next to the tv for 2 hours of viewing. The hot temperature will astound you.
Great point, Adam! We did wonder about the heat affecting the TV, and your advice confirms our concerns. Definitely something we’ll need to reconsider. The idea of adding a room thermometer is really smart-we’ll be checking those temperatures for sure! Thanks again for sharing such useful tips!
It looks lovely but have you considered your old age? That’s got a lot of steps and should anyone need care assistance in the future (I hope you don’t but it’s common)… all the very best regardless in your new home.
Thanks so much for the thoughtful comment! 😊 You’re absolutely right-thinking about the future and accessibility is important. We’re actually leaning towards replacing the spiral staircase in the living room with something a bit more practical. Appreciate the good wishes, and we’re excited to make this place a long-term home!
@@AmsNl2BcnEs Thank you so much for subscribing! 😊 We’re thrilled to have you along for the journey and look forward to sharing many more updates with you!
Haha, poor Benji! 😂 I think he’s just a little bewildered with all the packing and upheaval going on. Lots of reassurance (and treats!) are definitely needed to keep him feeling secure. 🐾 We’ll make sure he gets plenty of love and cuddles through the chaos! 😊
Great ideas! I'm all in waiting for the transition to begin. Lots of luck with your move. Hope it goes smoothly...🤞
Thanks so much! The move went well, but we’re still knee-deep in unpacking and sorting everything out. Exciting times ahead though! 🤞😊
Most impressed with your ideas. It will look stunning. I love all things green so you had me at the green bookshelves! Good luck for tomorrow.
Your kindness is impressive, as well, Craig. R U related to General Paton?

As a tempary solution you could place oriental carpet over the existing wall to wall... You are never boring by the way! Good luck with the cottage. Let the good times roll.
Thanks, HossMan48! That’s a great suggestion for making the space feel a bit more “us” without committing to any big changes just yet-an oriental rug could add some nice character. 😊 And thank you for the encouragement; we’re thrilled you’re enjoying the journey with us. So excited for both of you. ❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you so much, @shonalogan1581! We’re excited too! 😊❤ It’s all starting to feel real now-can’t wait to take you all along on the next part of this adventure!
I love the darker tones in your current house and they would look splendid in your new place! 🙂
I like your ideas, really brings it up to a modern yet cosy cottage vibe.
Thanks so much, @colin101981! That’s exactly the balance we’re aiming for-modern but still keeping that cosy cottage feel. Glad you like the ideas! 😊
guys look into floor heating the whole cottage!! absolute game changer for regulating heat, love your moody design 👍🏼

What are you boys doing in my box on a Wednesday!!! I am blessed 🎉 the floor-ceiling cabinetry is inspired…love it! Those fabric/leather wingbacks that current owner has in that room would be perfect in your whisky snug…but snug would be the operative word given the size 😂

Sweeties when you’re in your 80s cannt see you climbing that spiral staircase 😂. Sharyn and Rosie 🇳🇿🇳🇿
@@SharynWilliamson and how about getting furniture upstairs?! Impractical and not attractive
I love your ideas! Hopefully will fit as planned! I can't wait for the move and the future for you and the cottage! ❤

Great ideads! How about painting the supports for the
Stairs black.
Thanks, @cherrybird2010! I think you're referring to the spiral staircase supports-painting them black could definitely add a bold, industrial touch. We hadn’t considered that before, but it may just work well with the overall vibe! We’ll definitely think about it!
Kindness your way fellas.. Good for you..Lochness Scottish Highlands..
Thank you so much, Neil! Sending kindness right back to you from the Scottish Borders. Loch Ness is a beautiful spot-hope to visit again soon! 😊
Maybe you could put down underfloor heating?
@@TwoMenTheirDogif you get a wood burner with a window its much safer for dogs and you can still see the fire
Great tip! A wood burner with a window sounds perfect-best of both worlds for safety and still being able to enjoy the fire. Definitely something to keep in mind, especially with Benji around 🐾🔥. Thanks for the advice!

@@CatherineH.-gf7mm replace it!
Love love love the designs,it’s gonna be great👌
Thank you so much, @daleduerden1185! We're really excited to see how it all turns out too. Fingers crossed it all comes together as planned! 😊👌
Adam… please look a bit excited about the designs, I think they’re amazing designs 👏
He's not the typ of man to ne amazed. He's the cool one 😅😉
@@KewiCampervan yes he’s a bit gloomy isn’t he! I felt sorry for Johny
@@davidwiseman7774 ... Adam is merely worn out by all the activities of moving. Moving is hard work !
@@AdamofCA.🤣 I hope that’s a sarcastic comment.
@@KewiCampervan ... i'm a straight arrow. Moving IS exhausting work.
Are you planning to do something about the spiral staircase? It seems kind of out of place...
@@TwoMenTheirDog Definitely. And our builders had good ideas so it pays to listen sometimes.
@@AdamofCA. some amazing idea’s there especially moving the toilet to where the sink is! Genius 😍
@@TwoMenTheirDog thank you, will do 🙌🏻
Really like your bathroom ideas.
you need to do something with that cheap looking staircase. I guess I’m fussy. Keep it if it floats your boat.
in floor heating throughout!
That's exactly what I was thinking, stone floors become very inviting!
It might just be the perfect solution!
in floor heating would be amazing. just wondering why all of the "wood" have different stains? the stair steps, the wooden wall, the reclaimed wood on the r.v. wall, the little wooden storage unit below the t.v. the wooden floor,
and the vintage looking table?
@@TwoMenTheirDog let’s hope so, good luck with your move! It will be me next month moving from Nottinghamshire to Aberdeenshire 😱

@@SamM-oh2cx carpets have disappeared in most countries. In France we do cosy with solid floors rugs and soft furnishings
@@SamM-oh2cx agree about the staircase though 😜
