The Swabian were originally the Suebi, a Germanic tribe that invaded the Iberian Peninsula at the time of the fall of the Western Roman Empire and established the Suebi kindgom in modern day Northern Portugal and Spanish Galicia that lasted some 200 years before being conquered by the Visigoths (another Germanic tribe which established a kingdom in the rest of the Iberian Peninsula).
Portuguese and Spanish still have quite a large vocabulary (mostly war related) that came from Goth and Suebi as well as a tons of people's names, surnames and place names. Not to mention actual genetic admixture.

American here, maternal ancestors were Swabian. Paternal ancestors were Scots-Irish, with some Cherokee Indian thrown in. I once heard the Scots were Swabians, until they were kicked out of the mountains for not being too free with their money.
Funny too how both Swabians and Scots are known as engineers...I still think long and hard about that one!
