Most of his symphonies are incredibly dull
(1761 - 1765 ca) Per Haydn e Mozart la tonalità di mi bemolle maggiore è quella delle idee eroiche e riflette un travaglio spirituale, anticipando Beethoven. Il fenomeno, che avrà la sua piena manifestazione in una delle sue ultime Londinesi (n.99), è qui solo agli inizi, ma nel primo e nel secondo movimento Haydn è già alla ricerca di un vocabolario più adatto ad esprimere un dramma che non un gioco di società.
