I can confirm Ludisias will do well in the Cold Dark North. Anything between orchidish media to normal houseplant soil will seemingly do. Random humidity will work. Roots extremely easily, just stick a cutting in your preferred soil and it'll probably have roots in a couple of weeks. Keep away from full summer sun, though, or you'll get a bleached-looking plant.
I actually have to be very careful about overwatering oncidiums during winters, or I'll see rot. One in particular seems awfully picky. I have already ordered a few more growth lights, but if oncidiums don't get enough light (as is the case with the winters of the Cold Dark North, even with southern windows and some additional light), keeping them just slightly damp seems to work best. They won't grow much, but they'll sit and wait virtually unchanged till spring and proper sun come.
The Nelly Isler looks happy, though. Grew me three spikes. (Although I'm starting to suspect she might be two plants in one pot.)
Vandas do fine, provided you don't get one with Fusarium. Fusarium is evil. (Tip from the non-pro: Vandas do not normally have mostly green leaves drop, with just the base yellowed. That's apparently an immediate problem, which I didn't immediately realize since the big leaf drop started a while later.)

Hi Danni, I have a question for you on your MSU fertilizer. Does the ammoniacal nitrogen burn the roots and leaves on orchids, and can you recommend really good MSU fertilizer that does not have ammoniacal and urea?
    Thank you.

My Cattleya mossiae died. I do remember it having a hyacinth-like fragrance, but I don't remember anything unpleasant to it. I grow Cattleya warscewiczii, and it has a flower that is considerably larger than that of C. mossiae. My C. warscewiczii, on the other hand, does have an unpleasant aspect to its fragrance. The fragrance reminds me of hyacinths, but also mothballs. The mothball odour diminishes as the flower ages, but never quite disappears. Super impressive flower, though!

Danny, what about leaf yellowing from the tip? I have my twinkle in the Wish pot that you have and I noticed that the water reservoir completely depleted, the moss was still moist, but 2 leaves yellowed and died off. Maybe more water?

    Hi Danni, great video!
I'm a beginner and would love to grow more orchids, but I only have north-eastern facing windows and I live in Geneva (Switzerland), so I get limited amounts of daylight. Do you have nay orchid recommendations for me beyond jewel orchids and phalaenopsis? I really love the blood on the oncidium intergenerics, but I hear that they need a lot of light in order to bloom...

If you can grow Phalaenopsis successfully I’d suggest you try the Dendrobium phalaenopsis types, which like similar conditions. I live in the centre of England so my daylight will be similar to yours and mine have done well on the same windowsills as my Phals.

Hi Danni, LOVE this video. I live in New Jersey and I LOVE Phalaenopsis Orchids and Orchids in general. I've tried thewe times this time to grow orchids but they've all died😢. Can you suggest types of orchids for my area and type of medium, thank you so much!!💖

Hey Aida, I too live in northern Jersey & have always loved & purchased Phalaenopsis Orchids as well, but had never been able to get them to thrive till recently. I read up alot about them and ended up putting a track light system with some LED growlights in the track heads, directly above my orchids. I leave the lights on about 12 hrs a day. That, and being more attentive to their watering needs has seemed to make all the difference, they seem to be doing very well now. I am seeing new leaves and new new roots, which in the past I have not gotten. My condo is a bit on the warm side most of the year, so I end up watering them about once a week, more than i was in the past. Your environment might be different though, so always look at their roots, to tell you when they need it(when they turn silvery green). Hope this helped :)

This is Kathleen Cummings. Trying to identify my orchid, but the tag is labeled Epic Viola Katherine. But there is no such animal labeled as Epic, there is Eplc. How do I know what care to follow with this orchid? I am trying to keep a record of my orchids and educate myself on what I own. Any help would be appreciated. I live in Okinawa, Japan, and this is where I bought it.

    • @cristiaolson7327
      @cristiaolson7327 2 года назад

Not sure if you ever sorted out what your orchid was, but Epic might stand for Epidendrum-cattleya. Eplc is Epidendrum-laelia-cattlya. Fortunately, Epicatts and Epilaeliacatts require the same care; both can be treated as Cattleya types, requiring bright light and brief drying (a day or two fully dry) between watering.

Nice video! But why are you calling Vanda sanderiana an Euanthe? Wikipedia states that it was placed in both of these genera at 1914, but it is accepted as Vanda. Even BlueNanta describes it as a Vanda and that site has all the latest classification, as far as I know. As far as I read, even the AOS classifies it as a Vanda. Even Ascocentrum are placed into the Vanda genus now. Sorry for making a big deal out of it, but Euanthe sounds confusing.
Anyhow, I'm very excited to obtain the Oncidium sotoanum and Cattleya mossiae!

#suggestion Need a video about how much tds can each genus of orchids can tolerate in self watering for example like cattleya can tolerate upto 300 tds phals can tolerate upto 200 tds and vandas can tolerate upto 400 tds oncidiums can tolerate upto 100 tds. My above values are completely wrong and just for example purpose. So we can conclude that these types of orchids are tolerant to tap water with nearly 250 tds and these orchids like masdevellias can grown only in r.o water with low fertilizer need a casual talk of 30 mins videos in this topic. Then We know and can understand and adjust the fertilizer level cuz for example im paying nominal price for buying water with tds of 40 to 50 in 20 liters can for half an euro oir ground water is 700 to 900 tds which will kill an hardy orchid easily😢. My Leca increases tds very slighty if i feed 80 tds a week later it will be 100 or 110 in reservoir im new to self waterimg out of my 70 orchids 10 are potted in self watering 2 phals 2 oncidiums 4 summer blooming phals 2 cattleyas. Out of it 2 normal phals and 2 oncidiums and 1 summer blooming phal doing great if i want to switch others before that need to view a brief discussion about tds stuff in selfwatering before investing huge amount in leca danny plzz make a video my orchids are waiting for u in bark and moss and ready to switch in leca. And im that type of person like you where all stuff in my control and alterable whenever better stuff comes compared to older setups😅.

You get spots on the oncidium's leaves when water droplets sit on the leaves.
