    Update on the fragrance: it does get much stronger in the later morning and I can smell why Cattleya dowiana is renowned for its scent.
    On a different note: do we want to try out a "quick" Cattleya Triumphans moment?

    Hi 👋🏻 finally got a chance to watch this one. Wow 🤩 amazing blooms! I want a Cattleya Rex now. I have a baby dowiana. I’m petrified of this little diva but it’s doing ok the 9 months I’ve had it. AND I love seeing your young plants. I have lots of those too. My Cattleya are only just starting to get mature enough to even think of blooming. It’s getting exciting. Seeing others journeys with young ones to blooming is very helpful and interesting. Could you refresh how you fertilize in a video? Byeeee

      Amazing!!! Keep us posted how the dowiana is developing. I love these plants. Some of my younger ones are a bit more capricious - especially the little aurea I have.
      I agree with you concerning the young plants. My collection is also slowly maturing and coming into bloom. Still many to go but the ones that managed to flower already are my pride and joy.
      I can absolutely make a video about my watering regime and fertiliser but it’s going to be very boring haha. I don’t do much in that regard.

    Congratulations on flowering those! & Thanks for sharing your experience. I grow my dowiana under bright led lights, with a heat mat under the shelf during winter. Temp range 20-24 winter, 22-26 summer, humidity 50-65% year round. During winter I warm the water to 25-26 degrees before watering the plants, they are growing heaps of new roots but no signs of flowering spikes yet. Mine also have those wrinkly old Pseudobulbs but the new growths look plump.

      Nice! Sounds like you really have the care down for yours. I forgot to mention that I always use room temperature water for them. In the winter, tap water would be way too cold. Thanks for bringing that up and keep me posted if yours gets ready to flower!

    1000 thank's for this video! 🎉 one day I also hope to be able to show these 2 queens of cattleyas in bloom, just need to find the rex again. Had the rex a few years ago but scale got to it too bad so secondary diseases were developed. A fs rosita is on its way from ebay now. Shall take ages to ship I've noticed. Love the shallow pots, trued out 2 of them now for bulbos found them at currlin. I'm immensely impressed of your achievement. Super congratulations 2 u Matt. 🎉🎉🎉

      @MattbyNature  5 месяцев назад +1

      Hi Karin! So glad you enjoyed it. I'm sure you'll be able to get yours to blooming size as well seeing how you managed to accomplish that with a Cattleya mossiae. I got these pots from Ecuagenera Germany formerly Röllke Orchideen - how did these pots behave in your experience.
      Hope your rosita is going to arrive safely! I have two young rositas as well - still probably four years aways from blooming.

    • @KarinsOrchids
      @KarinsOrchids 5 месяцев назад

      @@MattbyNature Hi Matt! Well blooming ( and owning) a strong bs dowiana has always been my goal. The finishing lite so to speak. The mossiae arrived as a nfs very strong plant. That really counts a lot for its predictability to bloom. Unfortunately I had to divide her last year due to scale and she's now on her way to do a full recovery. So no blooms for a few seasons for her. I will upload a short video soon o her in bloom though just for folks to see what she actually looks like in bloom. I had an extremely tiny rosita seedling once...must admit I'm a bit worried. It says that it would take 1-3 weeks to ship it from France. No tracking available. It took the seller 7 dayd to even start to think about getting her ready to ship away so...fingers crossed she won't end up rotten or dehydrated. Soooo expensive 😅😅

    Maybe you can deal with the pests after the cattleyas have finished flowering.
    I heard that ants can bring other pests into the pot, but also protect it from other types of pests.
    It must be the sap that cattleyas release. I wonder if it's done on purpose for some kind of symbiotic relationship.

    • @MattbyNature
      @MattbyNature  5 месяцев назад +1

      Hello!
      I've had ants on my Cattleyas for a while. But absolutely, that is the plan concerning the scale. I'm on holidays now but I expect the plants to finish blooming by the time I'm back and then I will start a course of strict treatments against scale. Already ordered several products. Let's see!

  • @JessiW.841
    @JessiW.841 5 месяцев назад +1

    Wooow, they look absolutely incredible, well done! 🤗Purchased both rex and dowiana aurea in Germany two years ago as tiny little seedlings so they still need some years to even reach blooming size. I hope they will turn out as spectacular as yours 😊
    Do you by chance have any recommendations in terms of grow lights, I find the discussion on wavelengths very confusing…

    • @MattbyNature
      @MattbyNature  5 месяцев назад

      Thank you so much! I'm so excited for you and I'm sure someone with a walkeriana flower as their profile pic will manage with ease. Where did you get them?
      I am using the Mars Hydro LED panels. They are really efficient and I don't like the look of purple lights so I went for those.

    • @JessiW.841
      @JessiW.841 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@MattbyNature Walkerina is my favorite species and they grow very easy in my conditions - not that much success with the big classic Cattleyas though 😅 I’m wondering if non-optimal light, lack of water or the missing shift in day/night temperature is the reason (guess that’s the usual struggle growing in a German apartment). Thank you so much for your reference, I will check out the Mars panels and see whether new lights may change something 🤗

    • @MattbyNature
      @MattbyNature  5 месяцев назад

      I really like walkeriana as well! I have only one that's flowered before and I feel it's still a bit difficult since it's soooo sensitive towards stray light. Another one of my walkerianas aborted several flower spikes last fall because where I keep them, they are hit by lights during the night and they hate that. I find the other Cattleyas a bit easier to handle in that sense but walkeriana is just one of the best plants I have in my collection.

  • @2702foxy

    I have both , Rex are huge plants already but I can not bloom it for some reason. I have few dowianas but they are jo where as large plants as yours. Aldo I had them for a while and no where as vigorous looking as yours. I must be doing something wrong. Your plants are amazing

    • @MattbyNature
      @MattbyNature  5 месяцев назад

      Thank you so much! I feel like issues with blooming are usually related to light levels. How do you grow yours? Maybe they also just need a little extra time to mature.
      At around 26:00 I show the backside of the dowiana - with scale, shrivelled pseudobulbs and burnt leaves haha.

    was that sold as a dowiana aurea or rosita or they didn't specify? It looks like a cross of the two to me so just wondering.

    • @MattbyNature
      @MattbyNature  5 месяцев назад

      Guten Morgen! To be honest, it was just labelled as "Cattleya dowiana". The additional pigmentation on the petals and sepals appeared only a few days after it opened. I do have rosita and aurea separately. What are the characteristics you're looking at?

    • @michaelmccarthy4077
      @michaelmccarthy4077 5 месяцев назад +2

      @@MattbyNature the sepals are too red to be aurea and the petals too yellow to be rosita. The lip on aurea is quite variable in color but is generally open over the column, while it is always closed over the column in rosita. Add in the tinge of red on the petals and that's why I would say it is a cross of the two, rather than one form or the other.
