I really don't feel you picked a good image to convert, it appears to have some issues caused by the lens and focus that are captured in the relatively high resolution. I'd rather see something like (for instance) the examples on the front page of the gigapixel AI website, and see how Photoshop super resolution compares, IMO this really didn't tell me how they comprare.
To get the best results from PS Super Resolution you need to directly process the RAW file (as opposed to the TIFF processed in this video), as Super Resolution’s AI models include sensor characteristics for up-scaling during demosaicing.
I was just thinking to myself yesterday - I'd like to see a Gigapixel AI vs PS SuperRes - and here it is! I have both, and your comparison here confirms I did not waste money on Topaz's offering: certainly more options as you pointed out, and I gotta say, the Architecture mode gives me the sharpest enlargements every time!! Thank you Anthony Morganti!
You are missing the benefits of Super Resolution in this comparison. It isn’t apples to apples. The ACR version, “Super Resolution” is able to do this at the raw file root and output to a full raw DNG file. It maintains any previous LR or ACR adjustments and also allows them to be changed after using Super Resolution. So no matter what noise reduction, sharpening or even transformation/cropping, etc that you do prior to Super Resolution, it is fully non-destructive and editable after the fact and not baked in if you are working from a raw file. I love the results I am getting from using Super Resolution at the raw level.

Thanks for that walk-through of the two methods. You've made up my mind. I've been thinking of getting Gigapixel for some time because I use a crop sensor camera for wildlife and landscapes. Getting a little extra sharpness and good noise reduction is something I think I'll appreciate. Thanks again. You're always so helpful.
I have (the usual disclaimer!) n9 affiliation with Topaz, just a user, but don’t think you will be disappointed. I was sceptical, as I see many are sniping at adverts, on the grounds of no such thing as that free lunch, but on most images it’s worked miracles. Being able to tweak and recheck sharpness against noise reduction as well as to select the x ratio or length/height has been very helpful. On the other hand DeNoise and SharpenAI are so good I don’t use Gigapixel unless I need a really big change of scale.
I was expecting this video, I think Gigapixel is way better hands down, I thought you were going to pixel peeping which would have demonstrate clearly the winner according to me. Thank you for your videos
I took the photos from the screen and comparing side by side the detail of nose at zoom 400%, seems that Gigapixel makes better job. Sharpens the object and smoothing the background. Thanks for the video!
I did a similar comparison but added DeNoise AI and Sharpen AI for both of them. For my test, Super Resolution turned out slightly sharper. I was on MegaPixel's trial version and decided not to pay for it.
great video though in my job i have to restore old and vintage images in really poor conditions and none of my clients know anything about tiff, png, raw, super cameras, most of the pictures were taken with their phones, or were passed on from their grandparents so it you would make a comparisons with real pictures and not professionally taken pictures , thank you, I´ve been restoring old pictures for the past 5 years.
I tried Gigapixel AI against PS Super Resolution using a cropped bird photo from a few years ago and found a significant difference also; however I thought to make a fair comparison I should apply some sharpening to the PS output as I was pretty sure Gigapixel was also applying sharpening. So I ran the PS SP image through Sharpen AI and found the result was better than Gigapixel. Then to make the comparison as fair as possible, I took the original cropped image and ran it through Sharpen AI and then Gigapixel AI and compared that to the PS SP + Sharpen AI. The PS SP + Sharpen AI was still a little better but very close. I was using the latest version (as of Apr 29th) of both AI products.
Another excellent video! Great demo of the 2 approaches. I think these high quality up-sizing applications are game changers to a considerable degree. It makes me think my beloved Nikon Df has plenty of useful life remaining.
Great comparison! Honestly, can't tell the difference between the two results. SR in Camera raw is generally sufficient enough for me, but in one case, I needed more resolution which I think Gigapixel would have helped. Thanks for this informative video.
If it annoys you how Topaz software keeps "rendering" everytime you move the preview or everytime you make an adjustment, you can easily disable "Auto Update" anytime in the Preferences. Then you can manually "update" the preview only after making a series of adjustments. The "rendering" or "updating" is actually meant to be a real-time display of the effect of a slider adjustment, but it takes so many seconds to compute and display that it feels like a "render."
I have Topaz Labs DeNoise AI but not Gigapixel AI. For me, a true apples to apples comparison would involve applying DeNoise AI after Super Resolution, and then comparing to Gigapixel AI.
I have taken an old Canon Digital Rebel image and applied the ACR super resolution enhancement, then opened in PS and applied DeNoise AI, just the basic AI Clear setting. The resulting image was stunningly sharp and free of noise. I really don't see the need to purchase Gigapixel AI.
To provide a clarification, the ACR enhanced resolution does add noise in the shadows of that image, and AI clear does not remove that noise adequately, but the DeNoise AI setting does, while still providing improved image sharpness.
Thanks Anthony for another very good, instructional video. The noise reduction of the background seemed much better in the Gigapixel version. I am wondering if going back into LR or PS with the super enhanced version and applying additional sharpening would help it get closer to the Gigapixel result?
Great stuff. Always "love" hidden commands.. If one already has Denoise or Sharpen, I don't think Gigapixel is needed. I feel, PS Enhance + Denoise gets you to the same as Gigapiel alone. How do you think ENHANCE compares to resize in PS?
While you stressed that you wanted this to be an apples to apples comparison, using the Architecture setting in GP made this an apples to oranges one. As you said, you could have sharpened the image in Lightroom or Camera Raw, but didn't. The Architecture setting in GP obviously adds sharpening (to a wildlife image) that made the final image sharper, although I would argue it added unnecessary artifacts of the blurred part of the image (see the rim around the eyes and the doubling of some feather strands). Also, you could have easily added noise reduction in either LR or Camera Raw, which would have easily been comparable to the GP result.
Hi Anthony, in a very recent video by Chelsea and Tony Northrop they concluded that the super enhance in Photoshop isn't any better than just sharpening and using noise reduction except for Fuji sensors. I think they were wondering if any AI ws used and concluded there wasn't. Yours is a more instructive video and thanks
Okay here's my situation. As soon as I open the image in Photoshop and I right click all it does is want me to resize the image to fit the screen. Then if I click on anything else when I right click it just ask me if I want to change settings in that brush setting or whatever else. Can you please elaborate?
Good day/ Been reviewing a lot of videos lately trying to figure something out. I'm somewhat new to Photoshop and have this issue. I make digital artwork in pixel size but need to enlarge it to megapixel size. I try to enlarge it but I loose some of the area around the image (background to small and not enlarging like the image itself. Need help with this one that.
Love your videos. I am confused, however. Shouldn’t you have chosen 4x in Gigapixel for an apples to apples comparison? Super Resolution doubles length and width, therefore creates increases the file 4x.
From what I can see at "youtube quality" the original image, besides being low resolution, also seems to be affected by some camera shake, so maybe not the best example...?
Hello, how do you get an Tiff image to be processed in CameraRaw to enable the expansion. I note one is to use Bridge, how do you do this directly from LR? Regards ChrisB, love your work, you have taught me a lot.
It's an interesting video, but why should you make it "apples to apples"? PS super resolution's ability to output a true raw file is a huge advantage over Gigapixel AI!
Otherwise he couldn't compare image quality and noise which was the topic. He fairly noted PS 's dng advantage. He also noted GP's finite control advantage.
I understand, RH, but he makes it apples-to-apples to come up with a simple answer. Your note says it all. There is no simple answer. Of course the PS process introduces more noise because it has no noise reduction. And yes, Gigapixal AI has MANY more controls (I own a copy myself). Good package but like all Topaz products, very slow. My own take is that PS super resolution is perfect for those 8MP cropped bird images that will become 32MP after super resolution. You can still apply noise reduction when needed. If you're blowing up an image to print at 40" x 60", you want Gigapixel. Dewitt Jones actually blows up cell phone pics really large and sells the prints for a fancy price!
There may be other options but I go into PS - File > Open As - select Camera Raw as the file type and then navigate to the file. It'll open most filetypes in CR (jpg, png etc). Slightly fiddly (very slightly) but my raw files open in CR by default anyway so I don't need to do it very often..
Thanks so much, Anthony. However, when I access Camera Raw there's no "choice" for Super Resolution." It just gives me "Enhance." ?????? A bit of an aside question... is the Gigapixel AI better than Topaz DeNoise? Does DeNoise mess with pixels?
I have all three programs and find that SharpenAI is so good that I only need Gigapixel for big changes of size. And that DeNoise is so good I often don’t need to use SharpenAI ! I’m going back and reprocessing RAW files of favourites using DeNoise as a first stage to make sure I work on a clean (as possible) file then use Sharpen or a Highpass filter layer in PS, which lets me paint in or out sharpening . For example, when only a small part, like the stamen of a flower needs to be sharper, and to avoid accentuating noise or film grain.
@@kronkite1530 Thanks for the info. My computer is getting FULL up with aps and I'm finding I have to uninstall those which aren't that important. You helped immensely!
@@alohaleslie9407 Glad to hear that. I really do rate them all but love DeNoise and Sharpen though I could get away without that particular program if I had to choose just one.
I noticed you said that when you open the raw file from LR Classic to PS CC 2021 it opens up in the raw file program, when I open up a DNG file from LR Classic in PS CC 2021 it does not open up in the raw file program it opens up straight into PS ????? Using a windows 10
Thank you very much. I would be curious to see the 4x or 10x in Gigapixel AI; is it 4 or 10 times 'better' or just like 2x with merely the ability to pixel peep at larger magnifications? I doubt that it will 'create' resolution out of thin air (in the sense that if something is not captured in the original resolution obviously no s/w can ...) - so in my thinking this is all just increasing the number of pixels for larger print/display (and that means amplifying any flaws too). Am I missing something?
From my experience of Gigapixel I think you are right. The higher magnified images aren’t sharper (as in 10x V 4x) just give that same type of sharpness and detail but in a bigger print.
@@kronkite1530 Tnx, yeah since I wrote my comment a few people released videos on this very issue and it seems the Gigapixel isn’t particularly good at this.
@@dimitristsagdis7340 Ah, I wasn't trying to criticise it - just that making a 8x enlargement doesn't make it (at 100% ! ) sharper than, say a 4x scale-up BUT as it is AS sharp/detailed at EVEN that bigger size it is a win. In other words, from my experience, scaling up from 2x, 4x, to 8x etc. makes a bigger file, printable at larger size at 300ppi that looks just as detailed on screen at 100% or, more importantly on the wall. So it must be doing some kind of magic!
@@dimitristsagdis7340 Funny old world - Idid a day long course with Andy back in 2016 just after I got back into photography after a long lay off, having used PS since the 90s but never had used Lightroom at that point.
In photoshop preferences, Go to... Edit, Camera Raw, File Handling. You can set Camera Raw to "automatically open all supported jpegs". this will then work from Lightroom. Or... From Photoshop go file `Open as`, Select a file and then choose `Camera Raw` from the file type list just above the open button. This will open most files in Camera Raw
The biggest difference is I can buy Gigapixel whereas I will be paying rent on Photoshop every month, month after month, year after year. Fine for working pros who are shooting all the time and making their living. But for hobbiests, who maybe shoot a lot a few times a year, and then the camera sits in the closet for months, that's ridiculous.
You succeeded in a fair apples to apples comparison with an excellent explanation of the software. Leaving me curious as to how On1 Resize would do with the same image. I project that all three do a good job, with Topaz Gigapixel AI slightly better due to its flexibility for different image types.
Dude I'm sorry, but you have to talk less and get to the point more quickly 😅 this was 13 Minutes undirected "rambling". Tge comparison itself is 30 seconds

How do I open Camera Raw as a stand alone application as you do in this video? Thanks in advance for any help on this issue.
The superresolution is just a starting point, theres so many other things we can continue to do to tweek the photo in Ps.. Ps still wins for me
I noticed you said that when you open the raw file from LR Classic to PS CC 2021 it opens up in the raw file program, when I open up a DNG file from LR Classic in PS CC 2021 it does not open up in the raw file program it opens up straight into PS ?????
@@kronkite1530 take a look at Andy astbury recent utube video on super resolution - no connection to him
@@dimitristsagdis7340 Funny old world - Idid a day long course with Andy back in 2016 just after I got back into photography after a long lay off, having used PS since the 90s but never had used Lightroom at that point.
how i upload Photo from Lightroom to Camera raw to apply the SUPER RESOLUTION ??
In photoshop preferences, Go to...
Edit, Camera Raw, File Handling. You can set Camera Raw to "automatically open all supported jpegs". this will then work from Lightroom.
Or...
From Photoshop go file `Open as`, Select a file and then choose `Camera Raw` from the file type list just above the open button. This will open most files in Camera Raw
I NEVER print from jpg. All my prints are from 16 bit .Tif files.
It seems like having Sharpen AI, Denoise AI, and Gigapixel would be redundant.
Thank you so much.
You succeeded in a fair apples to apples comparison with an excellent explanation of the software. Leaving me curious as to how On1 Resize would do with the same image. I project that all three do a good job, with Topaz Gigapixel AI slightly better due to its flexibility for different image types.
but gigapretzel takes 10.6x longer to process
Neither seems to have much effect on full frame, high mp sensor images (eg Sony a73 60mp).
Not my experience of using it on Canon5DSr 51mpx files.
Dude I'm sorry, but you have to talk less and get to the point more quickly 😅 this was 13 Minutes undirected "rambling". Tge comparison itself is 30 seconds
Photography as a skill is over! When you can take a shot and change everything about it using AI , it is over.
You still have to get out there and get the image.
Stopped watching when you said, “print from a JPEG”. Always print from a TIFF.
You talk too much. We are in 2021. Fast content, please. This video could be reduced to 3 minutes.
What comparing a $100 stand alone app with something built into Photoshop? Boy, desperate for content.
Comments here and elsewhere prove it’s a comparison people have been curious and wanting to see. Don’t be a stick in the mud.
@@bennn82 I'm not other people and stick with what I said.
