Fantastic video. Absolutely love it. Love that Fanal forest. Stunning and mystic. Love it. The coastline is so beautiful. Your adventure of the island is amazing. Big like
Thank you, I'm so pleased you enjoyed it 🙏 One of Andy's highlights was the Fanal Forest, and I couldn't agree more about the coastline, I've never seen coastal cliffs that majestic in person before!
thank you so much for visiting madeira island where i was born i am currently in england in the city of london but I also like nature and want to escape the cities I have already visited other countries camping with or without a bike I've been to italy, switzerland, mscotland, irland, but never on the island of Madeira, hiking and camping, maybe because I was born in Madeira, I wasn't interested in going to Madeira's nature but because of you and other youtubers it got me going to venture from west to east always through the mountains thank you very much for motivating me
Hi Duarte. It's funny how London has pulled both you and myself to it, but we both love nature so much! You've managed to make it to a few countries I still want to explore. I've only visited Cern in Switzerland as a day trip from France. My trip to Ireland was scuppered by COVID, and I've only been to Italy when working on a school trip so had zero flexibility to do the things I wanted. Scotland however I've been fortunate to travel to a few times, but still want to go back and explore it more. Madeira was stunning. If you get the chance to go, I highly recommend it. It's one of those countries where you don't really get the 'Instagram vs reality' I try to make the videos as truthful as possible so in places like 25 Fontes and sunrise at Pico do Arieiro, I'll film the crowds, but for most places, there weren't that many people!
Caroline, Wow you guys are on the go all 14 days, I would need some rest days. Thanks for sharing I would love to do a vacation trip to Madeira. But for now I can live the trip through your channel. Thanks for the videos. You do a amazing job with your channel. Keep up the great work. Cheers 🍧🍧🧔
I get bored if I sit around for too long so I have a habit of tuckering us both out! Thankfully Andy and I met when travelling in the US, so his 1st impressions of me were exactly this, so there were no surprises further down the line! Lots of the budget European airlines like EasyJet and Ryanair fly to the island, so if you ever find a good deal to fly to Europe, you could do a multi centre trip and then hop down to Madeira. I appreciate though, that due to the transatlantic leg, it wouldn't be a cheap trip for you! ☕☕ Cheers!

Awesome work! Thank you very much for all of this info. :)
Great video, we are planning a two week trip to Madeira in June...you have us inspired. What car rental company did you choose...were you happy with them?....We are planning a week in Funchal and are trying to decide what other towns to stay in. Porto Da Cruz looks good.....what did you like about it?....Thanks and keep the videos coming!
Hi Dave. We used Rodavante to rent our car and I've never been entirely sure whether to recommend them or not. I messed up the booking and was 1 day short. The gentleman in the office picked up on the discrepancy between our return date and fly home date and adding an extra day on (obviously with the extra cost) was no problem. But, the initial car they gave us was so broken! 🤦♀️🤣 On our 5th day, it completely gave up. We had a warning engine light, and even in 1st gear, the car couldn't get up even the slightest of inclines. We called around their branches and got through to one (it was a Sunday). They had a recovery truck to us within 2 hours - which with hindsight was excellent as they must have acted on it immediately as the driver had to collect a different car for us, put it on the truck, and then drive all the way from the rental place at the airport to where we were, smack bang in the middle of the island. Customer service wise, they were excellent, I just have a question mark over their fleet of cars!
I really liked Porto da Cruz as it's a walking town, very chilled and laid back. Easy to park for free at the end of each day out. A lovely bakery where the owners were only too happy to make up ham and cheese sandwiches freshly for us every morning. Jaca Hostel was a wonderful place to stay. We stayed in their private en-suite rooms, but it was very sociable and met other travellers - the burger and pizza nights help. We were there on pizza night and they were top notch, the chef who comes in has worked in top London 5* hotel restaurants so knows his stuff. A Pipa next door is sensational with their seafood (and other typical Madeiran food) We ate there twice it was that good. More restaurants are on the seafront with spectacular views. It was a stones throw from the Larano/Boca do Risco walk, and same with Levada do Castelejo being very close too. Other trails like Caldeirao Verde, Sao Lourenco and Levada do Rei were not too long of a drive from Porto da Cruz - certainly less of a drive than from Funchal. We also did Pico do Arieiro from here. I hope this is helpful for you and thank you for such lovely words about the video 🙏
TBH I've never heard of Madeira but after watching this series it looks very fun and interesting. I do enjoy your itinerary videos as it gives a great idea of how to see the island for a reasonable price and how to stay on a budget. The google maps is awesome too!
Thank you so much for your feedback, it's great to know you like the itinerary videos and find the Google Maps helpful. I always feel like it would be helpful if I could come across each of these when planning my own trips, but just because I'd find it helpful, doesn't always mean others would.
Oooh good question! If you enjoy hiking, then 100% don't skip: Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo hike (including sunrise), 25 Fontes hike and the Moinho and Nova. I'd then choose between Sao Lourenco and Caldeirao Verde - for a change of scenery I'd do Sao Lourenco as it's not a Levada like 2 of the other 3 are. If you only give yourself 1 day in Funchal, I'd get the cable car up to Monte, but skip the gardens, take a toboggan down, and be back in downtown in time for a food tour as that was top notch... as was the wicker toboggan and because it's so unique in the world - you've got do it! If the skies are clear, you could pop along to the Cabo Girao viewpoint after the food tour as I bet its lovely at sunset. Depending on what time your flight arrives departs, you could visit Nuns Valley, or Balcoes. If it's very early or evening, you could even do a short Levada walk like Levada do Rei or some of Levada do Castelejo. Porto Moniz is quite a drive from Funchal/the airport so I'd only head there if you really enjoy wild swimming in natural pools. I hope this helps.
Excellent presentation as always, I enjoy watching your itinerary videos at the end of your trips. Not only does it always surprise me as to how much you can see in the time period but it's also good to hear you looking back at the trip and summarising what went well and what didn't. This kind of video is going to be super useful to anyone planning a 'holiday' on the island. Watching back it's hard to ignore the appeal that Madeira should have for hikers - so many spectacular trails and experiences to have. Love the costs spreadsheet, I did something similar on a few of my trips but never got around to actually using the data which is a shame. The cost of those flights coming home looked like a great deal, it nearly beat my Ryanair prices haha. I've noticed the same thing in regards to the rental car situation, there were some terrifying prices out there last year!
Thank you Matt 🙏 I always like to pack as much into our trips as possible - and it's always easier to do this when we have a rental car and not reliant on trips/public transport. Car rentals have been stupid since COVID. We've managed to get a good deal in Bulgaria, but we quickly gave up on Albania and plan to use public transport and combine this with day tours to reach places public transport doesn't go to as car rental there is crazy prices even by UK standard... so by Albanian standards, I dread to think what locals would think! Really pleased this series has made you aware of what's on offer on the island 🙌
@@WhenAdventureKnox Really surprised about Albania!! Just checked how much I paid when I was there a few years ago and it was £25 per day for a Hyundai i10 or similar - not bad. Hopefully we'll see prices settle down soon.
@@MattWhitingsEurope I really hope they do. After seeing your Bovilla Lake video, I want to visit, but it looks like public transport doesn't go there, taxi companies wont go due to the dirt road, and tours are 70euros EACH at the cheapest! The concept of 25euros for the car for the day feels like only a dream now!
@@WhenAdventureKnox Ah sounds like it's quite a tough place to get to these days. The price for the day tour is surprisingly expensive, hopefully car rental prices start to drop off. Fingers crossed anyway!
