- The Phantom of the Opera
Live in London
October 15, 2004 - February 26, 2005 - December 2010
Starring: John Owen-Jones as The Phantom, Rachel Barrell/Gina Beck as Christine, Oliver Thorton/Will Barratt as Raoul,
John Owen-Jones is a legendary name in Phantom. He first played the role in London from 2001-2005 making him the longest running in that production, he returned from 2010-2011, opened the restaged tour in the UK in 2012, and finally returned to London from 2015-2016. He has over 2000 performances to his name and is regarded as having one of the best voices to ever sing the role.
Unfortunately, none of the 2 full videos of him are great. One has the entire right side of the stage pretty obstructed, and the other one has great close ups but some heads in the way due to it being filmed in one of the front few rows. There is apparently another video of him from 2010 which appears to be excellent quality and brilliantly filmed, but only two clips have surfaced from that so far.
So, what I've done is taken the best footage/view for each song from the 3 videos, and combined them to try and give as good and clear a view of his performance as possible. Casts change between video clips, but this is probably the definitive collection of clips of John as The Phantom. Enjoy! Видеоклипы
Who needs over 45 minutes straight of John Owen-Jones?? I do!!
A perfect balance of singing and acting from JOJ. Far more depth than just belting out a song. I've spent the last week watching various versions of these scenes. This is the first time I felt the phantom's devastation at the loss of Christine.
He's one of the most underrated Phantoms ever!
I wouldn't exactly say underrated. He has quite a passionate following among Phans which continues to this day, much like his fellow Welshman and pal Peter Karrie.
@@paulclemens7953 Okay fine.
John Owen Jones is The Phantom, period.
I keep coming back to this video
Me too!
I love how he uses his hands to conduct Christine.
Adore his voice. It is powerful yet soft, sexy yet scarey, hypnotic yet romantic. I love how he leaves the organ and as he approaches Christine, he puts his hand to his mouth while singing MOTO as if he is deliberating to himself on how to approach her. I have never seen another Phantom do this, not even Michael Crawford. After all, the Phantom has never had a woman in his lair before, so he is playing it by ear on how best to proceed without frightening her. It shows great acting talent to demonstrate he isn't just going through the motions but is trying to BE the character. Bravo! I would give anything to see him play the Phantom in "Love Never Dies."
Well said!
John Owen-Jones is THE GOAT. I've been crying over him since December when I first started listening to him. I never had the opportunity to see him in concert and it hurts so much. He should have been the phantom in the 25th concert. If only ALW had not come up with that fanfiction and just preserved the original show John would've played the phantom and Katie Hall christine. Also, cameron mackintosh's lack of respect for John is revolting, after all his dedication to both poto and les mis. John deserves so much better, he is the real Angel of Music.
Gina Beck, the Christine in the Final Lair here is, imo, the finest of all in terms of her heartbreakingly real acting. It's not like she's playing Christine, it's like she IS Christine. And she is beautifully matched by John Owen-Jones, one of my top favorite Phantoms along with Michael Crawford, Peter Karrie, Anthony Warlow, Anthony Crivello and several others. It just doesn't get much better or more moving than this.
You, sir, have impeccable taste.
jOJ is my favorite phantom and Gina beck is my favorite Christine
JOJ is THE Phantom and Gina THE christine. They should've been the 25th cast, what a travesty that concert was. Biggest injustice in the history of musical theatre. I despise ALW and the scumbag cameron mackintosh.
Man... his voice is the only one that gives me an uneasy feeling in my stomach when he is singing The Mirror... like I"M the one that got in trouble, not Christine. Love JOJ!
I think JOJ is my favorite Phantom. His voice has a warmth/soulfulness to it that I love.
His brokenhearted sobbing is like no other Phantom I've seen.. He is truly heartbroken in the lines he sings in those scenes. I also absolutely love his tenderness.. He portrays Phantom best.. torn between doing the right thing, loving Christine, and hate of all who have been repulsed by and rejected him all his life. Definitely my favorite portrayal and my second favorite voice, Michael is my favorite. Its a very close race though, can you have 2 favorite phantoms? I think I do!!!!!
JOJ is high in my top 10 favorite Phantoms along with Crawford and Peter Karrie. And, having seen Crawford live in 'Phantom' 3 times I can safely say that his "I LOVE YOU!!" and his broken sobs at the end of the Final Lair were every bit as heartbreaking as JOJ's, if not even more so. And no one else ever surpasssed the unforgettable sound of wrenching anguish MC made in the Angel at the end of Act 1.
Same for me.
Ramin, Anthony Warlow, and JOJ all do a great job. I’ve stopped likening Crawfords version because of how much better I think those 3 did it. 😬
JOJ should have been the 25th concert phantom and Katie Hall christine. He deserved so much better.
JOJ is THE Phantom. The best besides Michael Crawford.
11:03 is exact footage of me listening to his incredibly beautiful voice
I don't know how to explain it, but his voice reaches inside me and and just does something to me. Both in this role and playing Jean Valjean in Les Mis. Plus I love the deepness of his singing voice.
I found it really interesting that in 31:56 Christine actually takes the ring from Phantom and places it on her own ring finger!!
He’s amazing, perfect voice and perfect acting for the role
It's so sad and frustrating that there's no video of him with Katie Hall and only one with Gina but is not going to be released. I can't believe nobody filmed them, London bootleggers seem to have something against him. JOJ & katie matched the roles perfectly like Erik and christine in Leroux's novel. They should have been the 25th concert cast. I have an audio of John w katie and it was heartbreaking, the audience went crazy with him and katie. His "I gave you my music" on the shows with katie and with gina are the best ever and so is everything else he did. What would I give for a video. Wish I was in Katie's place back then, lucky girl.
This is how it should be done what a talented man, he’s able to show all the colours of the phantom without being a ham, Crawford I’m sure is proud
Thank you for putting this together!
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
BRAVO BRAVISSIMO 👏👏👏👏👏🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
Thank you - fabulous!
Holy... 15:38 is something I have never heard from any Phantom before. This man is terrific, the GOAT in my book
Love his beautiful hands! Always remember that about him

Not bad as always i thank you for the amazing content.😀❤ I have some interesting news to share with you. Have you herd of the late Michael Burgess? He was the original Canadian. John Val John in Les Miserables an incredible Canadian singer. He was also in the Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber tour and sings The Phantom of the opera tital song and Music of the Night and so much more. I can't seem to find a recording of him in the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber tour any whare. Michael was amazing. Sadly he passed away a year or 2 ago. If you have anything of him in Les Miserables and Phantom could you please post it? 😀❤
Unfortunately, there are no recordings of Michael Burgess in Les Mis, not sure about 'The Music of ALW' tour and I'm unsure how I'd find that! Sorry to disappoint. However, you can hear him sing Bring Him Home below:

@@lesmiserablesfantome-ygood1922 thank you 😀
Could you post the October 2004 video if your willing? Thanks’
Wandering child at 23: 12 is so amazing. His voice comfort in her time of distress,as angel of music.
Which part was from 2010?
He has the best balance of sensual, dangerous/broken of the phantoms. And none of them have the tone and volume control he does.
Best voice for Phantom! Ramon gets best acting - sure. But JOJ is the voice for sure!
Changes from Gina beck to rachel burrell
27:50 flubs the line
This Christine is bleh. JOJ is amazing tho
