  • Extremely Low Cost Of Living In The Philippines But Is It Safe?
We get a lot of questions from people about safety of foreign expats in the Philippines. Why do the houses look like prisons? Why do they have barbed wire and broken glass on top of their property walls? Do we ever feel unsafe?

Hey Scott Cecile Liam & Chanel! Interesting and entertaining video with your personal insights and experiences. Hahahahaha! Nice family outing day! A chaise lounge chair is what Cecile is making reference to. Does RUclips reward you for the number of comments algorithm? It's good that you're proactive with development plans for future projects. Myself, I think along those lines being proactive, planning, preparation and organizing. Continued good fortune, health, fun and happiness. Stay safe

I've never felt unsafe here. The area we live in is considered a low crime area. We have a wall around the house and yard and its more to keep other dogs and animals from coming in. Our five dogs will let us know if anyone shows up outside our property.

The grills on windows and door from old Spainish influence over the Philippines. I've been pickpocketed once in 9 years at a grand opening of a SM store just too many people.

Good title "better be safe than sorry" anywhere in the world there is area that are more crimes. So just like Cecile said just be aware of your sorroundings. Some places is safety precaution like
In Israel the houses built with home defense against war for example the houses has sealed room just incase of nuclear hits the house. Every building has an shelter.

Marker an Wife,,, we usually travel to Davao City and my experience is that every where you go to any public place has several security officers with who guns and rifles and pistols checking every purse, pockets, and my experience traveling in a bus, they stop the bus every check point especially letting All the people out of the bus and checking every male ids and such,,, so the part of the Philippines that are unsafe is about 380 miles west of Davao City,,, and now the US military is there,,, I’m sure those strange aliens at Marawi are probably hiding out in caves perhaps,,,, hahaha,,, anyhow,,, it’s quite safe at Davao City,,, the problem is stealing,,, and ripping off foreigners,,, not good!!!,,,

There are dangerous places in every country. The western part of Mindanao like Marawi is not a safe place for foreigners to go to especially white people because they really stand out from the Filipino people. I've never had any problems in the Philippines even when I've been out and about. Hey it's better to be safe by locking the gates because should something ever happen then you would be wishing that the gats were locked. The neighbors have dogs so they're the early warning system for our security. It's also nice to have security guards in the subdivision who are armed. It helps to deter some criminals.

Absolutely there are problems everywhere. I think the real differences is the support services when things go wrong. Guys are used to being able to call 911 in Mayberry and get help…guys the ambulance service in the Philippines is basically a taxi if available at all…most use a trike to try to the ER, once you get there you better have your ATM card ready…no cash no service…car accidents will mean a trip to the police station most likely and no English will be used unless speaking directly to you….learn the barangay complaint process if you are having issues, it’s not as simple as going to the Police….fire services are questionable. 1960s and 70s trucks are still in use in the provinces. It’s more about fixing your own problems than a safety net or parachute to fall into.

Risk is always there, the active threat is dependent on how you mitigate those risks and expose yourself to them. Don’t walk around informal settlements like you own the place. Don’t assume every person is your friend. Don’t hand your 1K camera to a bunch of street kids to film you buying a coconut. Learn to say no.
The real risk that you can mitigate is the natural disasters and lack in response resources / infrastructure. Especially on islands where there isn’t much to begin with. Guys who are from the west aren’t used to weeks or months no power when a typhoon comes through.
There are absolutely no go zones in the Philippines. To say there isn’t for a foreigner isn’t the route to go. It’s the Moro Islamic groups in Mindanao and Sulu. The New People’s Army, communist rebels, are in a verity of islands…

I spent a month at marina condominium in Dumaguete I counted 15 security guards I think they overdo it a little too much because a week prior to that I spent a week at Sierra hotel just up the street which probably had more Guest than the condominium and they had one Guard and she was also the doorman without a gun I felt perfectly safe there
