This is what a good cover is; doing the song in your own style. In this case it actually sounds like a different song until you recognize the lyrics during the chorus. Brilliant!
I've been listening to a bunch of these bands covering songs on av club, and of the bands i have not listened to previously this is the first one that not only didn't suck, but may have improved the song... and this is a legendary song so that's saying a lot...
Joey (singing) and John (drumming) are from California and used to be in a band called Giant Sand with Howe Gelb but then split to start their own group. They are based in Tuscon and champion the local music scene there, incorporating it into their own music, especially mariachi music. You should definitely check them out.
Quick shout out to the drummer- you're awesome. Thank you for knowing how to use brushes, and thank you for being musical. The band sounds great, but wanting to hear more of YOU is why I will be downloading some tracks. Keep it real man.
I can't believe how they took such a corny, 80's action movie soundtrack song and made it not only listenable, but great. That takes tremendous talent.
Every one of these, the interviewer is such an asshole. He's always smirking, "Why did you choose this song? Was it ironic? Did you realize it sucked when you chose it?" I'm so glad there are no pre-interviews in the later versions of the series.
This is great! The original is kinda cheesy but this version is just amazing. I started working out a tab for it, but if anyone has anything on this that might help so I dont have top keep watching and guessing, all help is much appreciated.
If i'd never heard the original, I'd believe this was a Calexico original. Im a huge Calexico fan. Just sayin it sounds like a Black Light song all the way.
"Danger Zone" wasn't song so much as a chorus. The boys did a valiant job trying to make it something, though. Go see Calexico live, especially if they are touring with Neko Case.
To the Loggins haters: Um...do you see Loggins being invited on to cover Calexico songs? No. And you know why? Because they don't (and won't) have half the career that KL has built and enjoyed. 2 Grammy's, multiple "hits", co-signing with Steve Perry, Michael McDonald, and Stevie Nicks....Best of luck. Great band though. I do enjoy them but I'll turn on Loggins over Calexico any day.
Proof that white people cannot rock in the 2000's. This was a softball and these fucking mama's boy soft rock assholes whiffed on it. Damn, I'm so upset that they turned in such a limp performance.
wylwrk Oh God on second listen I take it all back! I wasn't drunk, or at least not JUST drunk, I heard what they were trying for and oh god their version is soooooo terrible. I may be a tardaloon, but these guys are limp and ironic. God I hate ironic rock.
The majority of this group was Hispanic. How can I trust your obviously superior musical tastes when you make such a clear observational error right out of the gate? What was that weird sideways violin the singer was playing anyway? Damn, I'm so upset that I had to watch a video I clicked on.
How do you know someone has no musical exposure beyond what they hear on the radio? They use phrases like "weak af!" to describe actual musicians giving a musically strong rendition of a song.
This is what a good cover is; doing the song in your own style. In this case it actually sounds like a different song until you recognize the lyrics during the chorus. Brilliant!
Calexico doing Kenny Loggins is the best AV Club cover I've heard yet.
they are so damn good as what they love !!! saw them 16 times and still i am hungry to see them ; especially in Europe where they have great success .
Jason Shields I liked the GWAR Pet Shop Boys cover...
They just never cease to amaze me.
The intro for these cover videos really kill my binge viewing buzz...
Yes! Please change your intros AV Club! You're marring an otherwise excellent series!!!!!
How awesome are Calexico? They can make THIS song sound THAT GOOD. Well played, guys.
This is a real gem, I'm glad i found it!
this is amazing! completely new spin on a classic tune. Great work.
Thanks AV Club, Undercover is always surprising and frequently a joy.
*mandatory Archer reference*
Holy shit, I have been a big fan of AV club but just ran across this.
Amazing.....
Outlaw Country!
I've been listening to a bunch of these bands covering songs on av club, and of the bands i have not listened to previously this is the first one that not only didn't suck, but may have improved the song... and this is a legendary song so that's saying a lot...
I'm a big Loggins fan and I love this ,bet Kenny did too
whatadollslife a great version!
this has become the soundtrack to my life....
Stunningly tight arrangement! Loved it!!
Couldn't help but get a Wall Of Voodoo feel from this, it's really REALLY good.
YES!! Make it your own, but respect the original! This is what I'm talking about!
I would absolutely buy this cover. Of course I'd buy anything that Calexico played.
This version should be used in the upcoming Top Gun 2.

They are based in Tuscon and champion the local music scene there, incorporating it into their own music, especially mariachi music. You should definitely check them out.
That was a very cool interpretation of that song. Iceman would be proud! And Goose also!
Came here because of Archer!!!
I'm here drunk because of Archer!!!
DANGERZONE!
+okrajoe OUTLAW COUNTRY!!!
"LANA" "WHAT" "Danger zone!"
this is spectacular.
Is there an upload of it on you tube? Id love to hear it. I like covers.
Good job guys!
Quick shout out to the drummer- you're awesome. Thank you for knowing how to use brushes, and thank you for being musical. The band sounds great, but wanting to hear more of YOU is why I will be downloading some tracks. Keep it real man.
Checked this out solely because I love Archer and damn what a great cover. If this was somehow incorporated into an episode...
Love the dude's self satisfied face at the end.
sounds like it could fit into a chase scene in a modern western movie... I'm really diggin this
I can't believe how they took such a corny, 80's action movie soundtrack song and made it not only listenable, but great. That takes tremendous talent.
i was thinking the same thing.
I much prefer these alternate versions to bands just sleepwalking through a passable facsimile to the song
I love Calexico just great sounding good musicians
just brilliant
This is so much better than the original!
I would watch the hell out of that movie.
Dear AVClub, seriously could you put the interviews at the end? Every single person who is watching this just wants to hear the song.
That brass
Archer wanted an acoustic cover..and by God he got one
Love it!
Every one of these, the interviewer is such an asshole. He's always smirking, "Why did you choose this song? Was it ironic? Did you realize it sucked when you chose it?" I'm so glad there are no pre-interviews in the later versions of the series.
First time ive heard of this band. Are they called "Calexico" because the members are from California and Mexico?
This actually awesome. Spaghetti western style!
Awesome!!!
These guys are great. Their cover of Joy Division's Love Will Tear Us Apart made me actually like the song.
Enjoyable.
I thought the original was great and worked really well in the film but this is also an outstanding cover.
surprisingly good
Arguably a better version that the original.
Nice!
The version that was just on archer is reminiscent of this cover
I didn't realize chris isaacs woicked game and kenny loggins dangerzone were same song till I heard this.
DANGER ZONE
This is great! The original is kinda cheesy but this version is just amazing. I started working out a tab for it, but if anyone has anything on this that might help so I dont have top keep watching and guessing, all help is much appreciated.
How the pros do it.
FREEZE FRAME @ 00:53 - If Jeff Goldblum and Jon Cryer (from two and half men) had a Latino love Child....Am I right? Look at him!
This would great as the theme song to a remake of Top Gun done with Bi-planes and barn storming
Top gun!!
Haha I kind of like the lyrics, Fits the movie and airial theme very good :P
Bi-planes, as in planes that like other planes, as well as helicopters?
Took a crap song and pumped some awesome into it. Nicely done.
Props to them for making it their own, but I can't for the life of me bring myself to like anything other than the chorus.
Starts at 1:20
now do the caddyshack theme!
Bad made Good to my ear!
Its been bugging me for a while
That chorus is reminiscent of 'when the river runs dry' by hunters and collectors
Thats a good thing BTW
If i'd never heard the original, I'd believe this was a Calexico original. Im a huge Calexico fan. Just sayin it sounds like a Black Light song all the way.
seriously though why was this song on the list on the first place?
"Danger Zone" wasn't song so much as a chorus. The boys did a valiant job trying to make it something, though. Go see Calexico live, especially if they are touring with Neko Case.
Great cover, who'd have thought a kenny loggins song had depth
I didn't think it was possible to make that song sound good. Clearly I was wrong. Awesome cover.
blows Kenny "Footloose" Loggins out da water!
LANAAAAAAA!!!!!
Too bad the shameless trashing of Kenny Loggins at the beginning will probably prevent him from ever being on Undercover... Epic potential killed.
Archer would be pissed
LANA! LAAAAAAANAAAAA!
i feel like this is gonna kick my tiny ass
To the Loggins haters: Um...do you see Loggins being invited on to cover Calexico songs? No. And you know why? I was bored watching through these AV Club covers, and they're mostly all soo horrible. Then I saw this. Waaaayy better than the original
Song starts at ruclips.net/video/b5vY33uwXq8/видео.htmlm20s
Hahaha yeah!
Did he say the original lyrics are bad?! BLASPHEMY!!!!!!!
He certainly insinuated that. ;-)
Rivers Cuomo on the drums
+dougthealligator Wow, no kidding! That's awesome.
Not bad. I rather the original though.
intresting but just ok
Africa cover coffee shop
I THOUGHT I hated this song
God became a musician in Joey burns :)
sounds like cow boyish....
Yeah, the original is defenitly better.
LAME. Musically talented but, not a good cover.
This version should just replace the cringe-worthy original on the hard drive of The Universe.
#Archer
Proof that white people cannot rock in the 2000's. This was a softball and these fucking mama's boy soft rock assholes whiffed on it. Damn, I'm so upset that they turned in such a limp performance.
I love this comment, seriously. Tardaloon! I had this coming. You make a good point.
wylwrk
Oh God on second listen I take it all back! I wasn't drunk, or at least not JUST drunk, I heard what they were trying for and oh god their version is soooooo terrible. I may be a tardaloon, but these guys are limp and ironic. God I hate ironic rock.

Obviously you can't! I opened the door and invited myself into this genre without wiping my feet on the mat. I DIDN'T WIPE MY FEET ON THE MAT!!!!!!!!
Horrid song made much better
Ruined
Wow... it's NOTHING like the original. Gross.
they put no emotion into it, it doesn't sound great , it's weak af ! mostly the vocalist fault
How do you know someone has no musical exposure beyond what they hear on the radio? They use phrases like "weak af!" to describe actual musicians giving a musically strong rendition of a song.
These guys are so lame. The original is so much better.
LANAAAAAAA!!!!
