As a baggies fan this brings me so much joy. For however much it’s not a record anyone wants, anyone bottom of the league on the last day of the season would happily accept it.
And I thought this season was a weak bottom of the PL table, Everton clinched safety with 36 points after 35 matches, and Forest currently safe with 29 from 36
So this year will almost certainly be a record for lowest surviving team maximum forest can get is 35 points that’s winning all 3 games Luton 34 points again winning all 3 games not a chance I can’t see either Finnish with more that 30 points
Forest are now the worst team to avoid Premier League relegation (32 points). Well, at least it's better than being the worst team to be relegated (on just 11 points) - some team whose name begins with D I think.
I thought this was going to be about West Ham in 09/10. You mentioned Wigan but we actually got 1 point fewer than Wigan and finished below them. An indication of how bad the league was that year is that West Ham finished 17th but ended up 5 points clear of Hull in 18th. 31 points would have kept us up; as it was, we got 35 which is only 1 point off what West Brom got in 04/05. We were awful that season and I maintain we were the worst team to survive. Incidentally, I also think we were the best team to go down in 02/03 so there you go!
West Ham 09/10 must be up there, we finished 17th on 35 points. Felt like relegation standard, and we only stayed up because there were three really bad teams that year. We finished bottom the next year; it felt like we might as well have just been relegated originally.
I was in the away end at The Hawthorns that day, and it was so weird every Portsmouth fan cheering goals going in the our net - as us losing would help send Southampton down 😅 We all invaded the pitch with the WBA fans at full time! 😂
West Bromwich Albion are one of my favourites ever and I was just twelve years old when they managed to survive with less points and I did enjoy that season's relegation based matches, good friends!!!:-D
The mathematical minimum to survive is 6 points (4 sides draw against each other and lose to everyone else. Survivor determined by a tie-breaker). The mathematical maximum to be relegated is 63 (2 sides lose to everyone else, no matches among the other 18 are drawn, each of the 18 gets 21 wins for 63 points, and relegation determined by a tie-breaker.)
I didn't realise Frank Burrows was involved. I remember him being the first manager I ever saw as a child starting to go and watch Cardiff when we got promoted from division 3!
I knew Tifo would do a video on West Brom judging from the title. The greatest relegation dogfight in Premier League history with the greatest of escapes. Rock bottom on the final needing three other clubs to LOSE and the football Gods blessed them.
One more thing to add to the weirdest year in history, arsenal went undefeated, porto won champions now this. I just can't remember what else was weird that year.. 🤔
My girlfriend at the time was a Charlton season ticket holder. I remember her coming home singing: "La la lah la lah la la lah, La la lah la lah la la lah, La la lah la lah la la lah, We sent the Palace Down!"
6 - Is the minimum points required to survive in the Prem, assume there is no point deductions. This is possible when all bottom 4 teams always lose against every top 16 teams, and matches between bottom 4 always getting a draw.
There’s nothing worse than being promoted then get relegated the next season or get the least points for the whole season or only stay up by luck and other teams results helping you to stay in the league when you clearly didn’t deserve it
@@steveforest8385 the staggering thing is not how many points Forest stayed up on, but how low they can theoreticallly stay up on. 27 points or 26 points on a better G/D. The 2022/23 Championship promoted cohort was the single weakest triplet in Premier League history. The previous lowest total points tally for the 3 relegated teams was 76 points. This year's was 66 points, 10 whole points lower.
I wouldn't mind some sensible transfers for Liverpool because they need to rebuild this window. It would be interesting to see what players other clubs could use as well.
The Lee Hughes case is very interesting 🤔. Footballers do end up doing jail time like everyone else and so weird to me how Mason Greenwood didn't get a trial
Maybe because Hughes caused the death of a man and fled the scene, leaving two other people seriously injured without medical attention. Whilst there's insufficient evidence against Mason Greenwood and no-one outside the people involved - including you - has the slightest idea of what really happened. Hope that clears it up for you.
And West Ham were relegated with the most points (in a 38-game season) in 2003, with 42. Also, Sunderland (1997) and Bolton (1998) both went down with 40 points.
I analysed all this data either last year or the year before because I was interested in the question: Is the number of points needed to survive going up down or staying the same?
If I remember right, that was a particularly poor season with loads of teams at the bottom such as Palace playing negative 4-5-1 formations. I haven't looked at the stats but my vague memories of this season are that there were a lot of draws and the teams at the bottom were particularly low scoring as they focused on not conceding goals. It was pretty grim as I recall.
Since the PL became 20 teams in 95-96, there's been a gradual decrease in the number of points needed to survive from an average of 39.5 from 96-99 down to an average of 33.75 from 20-23. The figures are based on a team finishing 1 point above the relegation places.
That relegation battle was immense. Norwich winning all of their last 4 home games including Man United and Newcastle yet failing away even when it was at Fulham who had nothing to play for. Palace beating Liverpool then drawing every game. Southampton snatching last minute winners and equalisers against Norwich and Palace respectively but finally going down. And West Brom. Never underestimate Paul Robinsons last minute equaliser at villa a few weeks earlier. Also, there was a point on the penultimate game where West Brom were losing at Man United and Palace were beating Southampton. At that point they were relegated. But Earnshaw equalised from the spot and that late Southampton goal whilst benefitting Southampton also massively helped West Brom in the end.
Crazily enough, this record could have been tied this past 2022-2023 season by Leicester if Everton didn’t win their last game. Even if Everton drew, Leicester would have finished above Everton on goal difference and survive relegation on 34 points. I’m pretty sure Tifo was paying attention to this also, hence the posting of this video after the season concluded.

And I thought this season was a weak bottom of the PL table, Everton clinched safety with 36 points after 35 matches, and Forest currently safe with 29 from 36
Time to update this video! Forest just stayed up with 32
So this year will almost certainly be a record for lowest surviving team maximum forest can get is 35 points that’s winning all 3 games Luton 34 points again winning all 3 games not a chance I can’t see either Finnish with more that 30 points
Forest are now the worst team to avoid Premier League relegation (32 points). Well, at least it's better than being the worst team to be relegated (on just 11 points) - some team whose name begins with D I think.
As a West Brom fan. I knew we would finally get a dedicated West Brom video. Just from the title lol
West brom was the best relegation escape. Rob Earnshaw turned in to prime Andy Cole for the last 8 games.
That record is set to be broken as the likeliest escapees Forest are on 29 point and Luton on 26 with one match to go
I thought this was going to be about West Ham in 09/10.
That West Ham team had some names. Such as Benhrami, Diamanti and Franco
If Burnley didn't appoint Brian laws as manager and someone actually decent you'd probably gone down
What more ironic is, West Ham got 42 points in 02/03 season, but still relegated.
Could be labelled "Best Premier League team to relegated".
@@ikigarasi9377 I would say so, squad was extremely strong and that's a record number of points.
I was in the away end at The Hawthorns that day, and it was so weird every Portsmouth fan cheering goals going in the our net - as us losing would help send Southampton down 😅 We all invaded the pitch with the WBA fans at full time! 😂
I haven't watched the video but I immediately thought of Everton
I'm glad they did, but Everton got really lucky to survive.
West Bromwich Albion are one of my favourites ever and I was just twelve years old when they managed to survive with less points and I did enjoy that season's relegation based matches, good friends!!!:-D
I still forget Huddersfield were in the PL
Nottingham Forest are gonna beat this record, they could theoretically stay up with just 29 points 😂
22-23 Chelsea must’ve just missed out on being the worst
The worst Premier League Team to Survive, you’ll never sing that!
"Kanu who was 28 at the time"
As if he was 😅
Nigerians are well known for dodgy passports. Yakubu was 24 for 6 years 😂
It also made him just turned 17 when he was banging in goals for Ajax in their 94/95 champions league winning campaign.
Everton fans - see title
*heaving breathing*
looking at the table now with 1 game to go. Nottingham Forest are 17th with just 29 points. The record is going to be broken
One more thing to add to the weirdest year in history, arsenal went undefeated, porto won champions now this. I just can't remember what else was weird that year.. 🤔
greece won the euro
You might be thinking woahhhh a draw against city but then they were a mid table side
Nottingham Forest guaranteed to better that record with a maximum of 32 with 1 match left. Even if they get their points back, they will match it.
Really thought it would’ve been 19/20 villa, super impressive either way. It’s always against the odds when it’s that many points
Awaiting the follow up "Best Championship team to miss promotion"
My girlfriend at the time was a Charlton season ticket holder. I remember her coming home singing:
"La la lah la lah la la lah,
La la lah la lah la la lah,
La la lah la lah la la lah,
We sent the Palace Down!"
The worst ever premier league team is Everton we have been in the league every season nearly went down 4 times and the highest ever finish is 4th
6 - Is the minimum points required to survive in the Prem, assume there is no point deductions.
This is possible when all bottom 4 teams always lose against every top 16 teams, and matches between bottom 4 always getting a draw.
There’s nothing worse than being promoted then get relegated the next season or get the least points for the whole season or only stay up by luck and other teams results helping you to stay in the league when you clearly didn’t deserve it
Not only Forest stayed up on 32 points, they can theoretically stay up with as little as 26 points
Don’t forget bryan robson was a legendary player at albion too. Made it an even better story
Didn't leeds stay up with the fewest goals in 1996? First season under George Graham?
No mention of the fact Pompey fans joined West Brom fans on the pitch to celebrate Southampton’s relegation? Cracking day that was for us too!
The best part of this season was on the final day was the Pompey fans in the club shop buying Albion shirts and giving us thier full surport😂😂
I wouldn't mind some sensible transfers for Liverpool because they need to rebuild this window. It would be interesting to see what players other clubs could use as well.
1:41 "boing" is a word you really don't hear enough of these days...
Really enjoyed the graphics and animations for this video.
That final day was wild, switching between channels to keep track of what’s going on 😂
nottingham just stayed up on 32 points, could have been 29!
@@markchambers3833 I mean.....there is some evidence. Enough to make people think he isn't the greatest guy ever, not enough to formally charge him.
@@ben________3156 not enough to warrrant jail time
And West Ham were relegated with the most points (in a 38-game season) in 2003, with 42. Also, Sunderland (1997) and Bolton (1998) both went down with 40 points.
Leicester would have tied it, had Everton not won. 34 points, magic.
Love how Joe nearly breaks his flow after saying ‘boing boing baggies’
This record is broken.
Yeah it’s been broken but with an asterisk, given forests point deduction. So really West Brom are still the worst team to survive
Oh yeah, I remember seeing a video on that final day. Poor Norwich 😭
@@davidspear9790 That's what I thought, but I couldn't find my spreadsheet.
"He was headed to prison" caught me so off guard XD
same tbh😅😅😅
But Earnshaw equalised from the spot and that late Southampton goal whilst benefitting Southampton also massively helped West Brom in the end.
didn't expect to see everton featured in a tifo vid
Should have went down couple of times. But football Gods are kind to them
This season though, they really should have been relegated
@@janezra how "should" we didn't 3 teams have less points never understood this thought proses
They would have also been the first team to survive a 38 game Premier League season having lost 22 matches over the course had this have happened
Surprised you didn't mention that that wba side were the first team in the pl era to survive after being bottom at Christmas
Nottingham Forest already broke the record
Not if they win and you discount the point deduction
Everton could have survived with 34 pts, had they tied and both Leicester and Leeds lost..
How about a video on the original Division One. That would mean you getting out of your PL bubble.
Had Everton drew the final game of this season, Leicester would have matched this record by surviving with only 34 points.
Time for a new video
In terms of expectations I’d say Chelsea were lucky to survive this season being the biggest underperformers in the prem history
Offended as an Everton fan that you used the Grand Old Lady as your thumbnail as well as saying the worst premier league team
So who is the best team to get relegated?
