You should think about including seed oats with your grass seed. The oats germinate rapidly, and robustly, provide cover for the grasses, help control erosion, provide food for wildlife and are annual.
Keep up the good work. It's tough for some people to understand that not everywhere can be farmed the same. I grew up in Maryland where you cut a hay field three times a year. Now when I moved to the mountains of northern Pennsylvania we get one good cutting a year
I can see why you're channel has grown so much since I have been watching you keep everything interesting and it makes me keep watching I remember when I decided to check out your videos it was when you were just getting started in your quest to get where you are now I really enjoy watching your progress through the years keep doing what you do wooooo

All that forest edge along the future meadow looks like a great place to put a deer stand- especially if you can plant some clover. People who aren’t from this area have no idea of how bad the soil is. It took years for me to get my garden soil tuned up. I haven’t seen real topsoil in years. Looks great Frank
Those gullies in NC were what prompted Hugh Hammond Bennett to write “Soil Erosion: A National Menace”, and eventually get the Soil Conservation Service authorized about 1930 (renamed NRCS now) and also the Soil and Water Conservation Society started. Interesting story about all that. Natural resources conservation was my career until I retired last January. Hope you soon get a good stand of grass established on that bare ground. Nice that the timber is funding (most) of this transformation. It’ll be nice to have the additional pasture.

It's great how your making the land work for you! And excavator would be perfect too but that loader is just as multi purposeful keep at it I love watching the land clearing!!
When we moved into our 3/4 acre we found nothing but clay. we had to rototiller the garden bed and haul in bags of dirt. I mixed the soil and added horse manure to just get a garden started. we composted for a year in a compost heap and then started another compost heap. this year we used our own compost. Wow what a difference. a shovel and a hoe and a rake is what I used because of how small we are. But all was worth it. So far this year we have had radishes and strawberries already and onions are coming up and the squash is really coming up. I planted a pomegranit tree and my son planted a lemon tree. We are doing everything by hand. Oh I forgot the birds brought us some Sunflowers.

this would have been a fun project if I wasnt so far away! thats about all you can do with that mess is push it into a low area it would never burn! mulching does not get the stumps out and they all start to sprout back or rot and make sink holes. Not sure why so many people dont understand mulching does not work for pastures!
Amen brotha! I'm not sure either...maybe too many youtube videos! Tell ya what...I'm loving this light rain!! I see a nice green haze over the land where I planted a warm season contractor mix

Looks like your doing a great job clearing land for pasture. All I have is pasture and we are planting shade trees for out goats, trying to secure for the future
Stoney Ridge Farmer I know, that kind of cash doesn’t come easy but it sure goes easy. Your land value just increased dramatically but you can’t see or touch that cash. It’s hard. Thanks for encouraging others to follow their dream josh.
Hey Josh, you should let Mrs Stoney Ridge do a segment of the show with you in the background. We would love to see her more on camera. Go get um brother.
By about the 8th day. The dude is probably like. GET ME OUT OF THIS THING!!!!! Looking great. Nothing wrong with what your doing. Going to be Beautiful. Vic
It took a good while and many You Tube videos for me to learn the difference between soil and dirt. From the videos it all looks the same. We have to trust you and Frank to know the difference. It would cost a fortune for Frank to screen and sift all the dirt, rock and stumps. If you look at the rest of your farm you are doing something right. Good luck, take care (especially your wife who is doing heroic work)
Five years from now, go back and excavate those dump piles. You'll find some of the richest soil on your property. One big compost pile. Screen all the woody debris out and you'll have the best top dressing you can find.
You should see the way I clear pasture! I use a battery powered chainsaw and goats to eat the brush. Granted, not as fast, but it's what I have. Unfortunately, I have a few larger trees I need cut down that my chainsaw can't handle. 🙁
Everything filling up the gully us being recycled! The small amount of topsoil going in the gully will help break down the roots and debris into some incredible fertile soil!!! Great job Josh, don't stress over the money, it's all gonna work out great with your master plan brother!!! Love Ya!
we did the same thing on our farm in West Virginia back on the 70's I was 5 or 6 at the time. My grand father had large sections done with a dozer not a track loader like you are doing. we did loose a lot of top soil that is still pilled up at the edge of the fields today. if you can afford to hydroseed that would be a good way to quickly help with the erosion issues and get the seed done quickly.
Great music, what is the name? That guy is good, he's putting enough soil in each load so you don't wind up with big sink holes as it settles. How long has he been operating heavy equipment. He's always moving with purpose. You seem to get your moneys worth out of everything you do, you will do well. I enjoy your videos, they're all interesting. Thanks again, my friend and my best to the Mrs.
It’s amazing how much the land differs from one area to the next, I am from Pa and my one neighbor/friend put in about a 3 acre pond and they hauled 300+ tri-axle dump truck loads of top soil out to get down to the subsoil underneath, I dug holes to put fence posts in for a pig pen and had 3 feet of topsoil, my parents live 5 miles from me and have about 3 inches of top soil
You need to explain you plan on creating topsoil, by pasturing the land. It is clear to me you want to improve your ground. Pasture can use and improve poor ground if done right. My mother was from a farm in Maine. It pastured lots of rocky ground and hayed the better areas. Reclaiming ground from woods or logged over areas is expensive and hard. This project may take years to complete. Once grass is planted, it will grow. A solid thick sod takes more time. It takes care to see grass beats weeds and trash plants ( unwanted trees and bushes).
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer Thanks, I just saw stuff behind your work folks might miss. At Least you have Dirt. That Maine pasture was mostly Rocks, juniper and cedars.. Good luck and God bless you all.

Did you ask him about those tracks? If it rains the track loader is stuck. The tracks are past due for changing.
Most people don't change them until they have an issue his machine is still working just fine
Just got a close look they aren't even close to wore out
You can't do this kind of clearing with wet ground
I was thinking the same thing. Tracks are done. Trying to save money on them can cost you more in the long run. No traction.
About 30k for a #1 under carriage. The only thing I see is worn out pads . Good looking sprockets rail looks good also.
Ka-ching! Ka-ching! Ka-ching!
