    I just bought a new 2023 for $9400 for riding in the woods. In short, I love it. The suspension is much better than the Yamaha TT230 that I have. I can ride much faster over tree roots and rocks and get over much bigger logs since the engine is so high. It also has much more power down low so "lugging" is great. When riding very steep terrain not having to shift is a blessing - the bike will never stall. Unlike others, I much prefer having the rear brake on the left hand. It took me 10 seconds to get use to it. When riding down steep hills and having to make a right hand turn, it is easy to put your right foot out since there is no need to use the right foot for braking. All in all, for the riding I do, this is much better than a gas bike. Plus, with nearly no sound, I can ride in places that I never would have tried with a gas bike.

      I have 50 hours on one, and I also really like the hand lever rear brake. You just ALWAYS have precise control over the rear brake, and your feet just... hold you up (imagine that). The rear brake is a bit undersized, so sometimes when I'm tired I need to use both my pointer and middle finger to get enough braking power in the back, but I've heard of people upgrading the rear brake with success to avoid this issue.

    Main goal for KTM here should be lighter weight and longer ride time. I would think if they applied themselves it would be easy to tweak gearing and power management.

    A friend has one. It makes a rough 25 mile loop we have, but just barely. It's usually in limp mode or close when getting back to the truck. He loves it but he also has a gas bike so he can switch when the Freeride isn't up to the task.

    Riding on dry hard packed ground with those light weight high efficiency tires is best case scenario. I wonder how the range in wet, loomy, muddy or snow covered conditions? Then with a proper set of dirt bike tires or gummy's?
    I would be wary of expecting better battery technology in our lifetime, or ever. Does the $12,000 include a 240Vac 20amp gasoline/diesel generator?

    Thanks for the info. I've been riding dirt bikes and mountain bikes for years. Never bought a new KTM dirt bike because of the price but the price of the Freeride is what you would pay for a top of the line e-mtb from a major bicycle brand. I'd buy a Freeride if it could go 80 miles with some power left. Or, maybe I'll buy a Husky or Ducati e-mtb.

    Great review. I've been trying to understand this genre. I think it's legal like a moped / scooter / top speed. That asian brand is a similar market. All those heads hook up their bikes to be like this. Thing is this bike is quiet, Austrian, and I think it's supposed to be used for ripping around have fun not serious but to make you and your friends smile.

    Never gotten more than 30 miles and that was street. Get crazy and I get 11 miles 🤣 Super fun though. 3-4hrs trail riding put-put style. Everyone who’s ridden it loved it, including Ryan Hughes. Marvin Musquin and Max Vohland used to ride them all the time.
    Put a rear pedal brake on… was one of the first to do that (have a video). Put Supercross suspension on it. Been one of the most fun bikes I’ve ever owned. I ride it twice as much as the others because it’s so convenient to ride anywhere and is effectively zero maintenance.

      I have over 50 hours and just about 1k miles on my 2021 Freeride E-XC. I'm here to say that it's almost impossible to drain this battery in 11 miles. Also, don't put a pedal brake on this thing, because that's just for people stuck in their ways. Upgrade the rear caliper instead and use your left pointer finger, because it's way better.

    • @JohnHowerton137
      @JohnHowerton137 7 месяцев назад

      @@panic.attack it’s not hard to drain it that fast. My avg is about 15-18 when I ride by myself. 22-25 with others and I’ve only gotten 30 on the street. That’s not a dis, because I like the bike. I like the LHRB and I agree it has many huge advantages, but as a guy who doesn’t even own a 4 wheeled vehicle (8 bikes)… there are thousands of hours of muscle memory on a foot brake and I commute daily on foot brakes. When situations get sketchy you revert to muscle memory. I’ve had many close calls and it’s cost me broken bones at this point. I’d love to have both on it in a perfect world. It acts as a faux clutch and I love it in flat fast corners!

    I get well over an hour of riding time in mode 3 when riding trails. I had it out in the trails for like 3 hours last weekend but we were stopping a lot. I could probably drain the battery in less than an hour if I was riding hard nonstop. Climbing hills and riding in sand are not friendly to the battery.

    New 2023 Freeride is now $5999 at shops near me. They were $8000 all summer. So they are certainly dropping the price to clear inventory before a new model comes out. If price was a main factor, now is the time to get one. The Sur-ron Ultra definitely effected the sales of this bike.

    This bike is a first generation for the E-motos. I think KTM is sticking to it's roots with this bike. It reminds me of the Penton 175cc that ushered in the 2-strokes. At the time, that bike was criticized for some of the same reasons. Underpowered, too small, etc... In less than a decade if you weren't riding a 2-stroke , you weren't competitive. It's only a matter of time. Besides, lobbyist and government will mandate change, just like they did with the 4-stroke. California already has laws waiting to take effect (Executive Order N-79-20) and 17 other states are ready to follow suit.

    This thing would be rad if it can handle going up and down Santiago peak in Orange County with ease. That’s a fun easy trail (rocky fire road) but being silent and enjoying the views would be killer since it’s a nice scenic ride

    • @mxracingunlimitedltd7784
      @mxracingunlimitedltd7784 7 месяцев назад

      These can handle hills like any gas bike, they're definitely not low on power or anything that's not the issue at all..
      People race these in MX as well so they're fast..
      Its the range situation basically, same with any ebike. Youre only going to get about 25-30 miles of trail riding out of it before you need to recharge it. It does recharge in about 1.5hr though on the slightly faster charger mode, which isnt too bad i guess.. It also only charges on 220v outlets because of the fast charging and most likely because Europe already uses 240v there.
      I have seen a person mod the stock KTM Freeride charger to do 120v but you would need a 20A-25A 120V outlet to use it like that anyway.
      At that point, you could just run a wire from the panel somewhere for an outlet for it, just like you would do for an electric dryer or stove.
      You just need the correct outlet for the ktm charger as well, which i dont think is standard here in the US. So you would have to order that i think. But it wires up the same as any other 240v outlet.
      I have a Talaria, very similar to a Surron, in addition to some KTM gas dirt bikes, and if i didn't like the small & light size of the Surron light bee x sized ebikes at around 120-140lbs, i would of bought a Ktm freeride instead most likely. Its not too heavy, i just feel like its too close to the gas bikes except its electric..
      I mean i still probably will get one because now i just love the electric bikes and electric dirt bikes lol they are super fun especially if you can have both lol..
      They are perfect for local spots where noise is an issue and plus they're just less maintenance so its easy to keep around to take out quick.
      Just keep it charged up to 60/70% for storage to protect the battery when sitting for long periods of time, and then just charge it up the rest for a little bit before you take it out or just use it the way it is if time is tight. it will still last a long time at 60/70% battery, as long as your not doing track days with the thing lol..
      Which its just not really the bike for that.
      Most people are already used to riding a regular dirt bike, atv, or motorcycle so a rear foot brake comes natural. So I'm not sure why so many people talk about the hand brake, that just just tells me people never truly learned how to confidently use the rear foot brake on their bikes before this lol.
      It is easy to get used to the handlebar mounted rear brake, but there was definitely multiple times i went to go push the rear brake with my right foot, only to remember nothing is there on most of the ebikes lol..
