    Thank you for this video. I have a 15 year old who went completely mute to me and my husband along with all adults. Thank you for selective mutism awareness. She’s had selective mutism her entire life I wish I knew what it was many years ago. Thank you!

      I'm 15 and I thought my whole life I was just stupid and my parents are loving but they don't understand how to help except tell me to speak more or I'll grow out of it but the truth is it's getting worse and worse
      I've noticed around people I just can't talk I go mute shakey and just wanna go home but at home I talk I shout I just wish I was like that outside my safe space I feel bad for anyone who's going through this cuz it's not easy

    My 4 year old son has selective mutism and hasn't spoken a word at his nursery since he started there in September of last year. He speaks confidently at home but is wary of strangers outside of the home. This video was so helpful. Thanks again 🙏

      @sukhwinderkaur1783 my son is now 7 years old and thriving! He is confident and happy and my heart could burst with pride at how far he has come. He started a new school on September and that has helped him so much, he spoke the moment he got there, but he never spoke a single word in the 4 years he was at his other school due to the selective mutism. Keep being strong for your daughter, she will overcome her selective mutism in her own time. Remember your only job as her parent is to love her, no matter what and even if ❤️ xx

    I had this as a child growing up. It started after my family moved to a different City and I experienced culture shock and bullying. It followed me until just out of HS. My anxiety was constantly high and overwhelmed me mainly at school and some at home. If anyone noticed, no one offered help and support, unfortunately.
    As an adult I still have anxiety in social settings but it's definitely not as debilitating as it was as a child.

      @@may-yervang3083 I’ve noticed this in my daughter, her school has a counselor where she meets once per week for the past 3 school years but it doesn’t seem to work for a few reasons: they are inexperienced and doesn’t seem to know selective mutism. My daughter said it doesn’t help. I took her to the psychologist but my insurance doesn’t cover for selective mutism counseling.

    A bit of a tough call though on the "showing consequences" part. It seems that could also cause the kid to feel inadequate or losing opportunities because of their silence. I suppose you could go back to the kid (using the icecream example) and ask them in a fun way whether they're still undecided!

    I Had selective mutism as a kid and most of the teachers and my family did all the ‘don’ts’ that you speak of . It went undiagnosed and with zero support through it . Now I still have a lot of anxiety and depression issues as an adult. What can I do now to help? Also is there any information on what causes this ?

    I have Aetna as insurance and they said they don’t cover my daughter’s visits to the psychologist because it’s selective mutism. They only paid for first visit because it’s a consultation. Could you please let me know how to get approve for coverage since you might have other patients who have the same problem with coverage. I would have to pay $120 per visit without insurance.

    New research shows that many of these kids are suffering from hyperacousia. High pitched and loud noises can cause those kids pain. They may have trouble understanding conversation in the presence of background noise, and also not able filter their voices as they are speaking which people without hyperacousia can/do. These auditory deficits make school something of a nightmare for them.

    Can you give some information about the therapy strategies or programs that help kids work through sm?

    • @LiveOnPurposeTV
      @LiveOnPurposeTV  4 года назад

      Serena Cardenosa, it is best to treat selective mutism on an individual basis since the manifestation is individual. It could be through behavioral modification, giving rewards of some sort to get the child to interact. It could also be desensitizing strategies or even medication to reduce the anxiety. Medication is the least desirable in children and caution should be used, weighing the benefits and risks. If you are interested in working with me, go to DrPaulJenkins.com for my contact information. Thanks for watching.

    Selective mutism almost sounds like the childhood version of closet narcissism (where the narcissist fears being the center of attention because of another fear that others will see their flaws).

    • @LiveOnPurposeTV
      @LiveOnPurposeTV  5 лет назад +5

      They are different, le th. The reasons for not talking are different and normally can be worked through as the child ages.
