Thank you so much for sharing. I am not sure all you re sharing fits with my way of engaging SM, but love you shared this as I like to look at other ways engaging this fascinating disorder, and learn from it. Our goal is just to help these. Kind regards from The Netherlands.
Recent research shows many of these kids suffer from hyperacousia which can cause pain in noisy settings and make it very difficult to understand speech in the presence of background noise. They can also find their own voices traumatising because their brains aren’t filtering their own voices as they speak which most people do. My kid was like this, he got top grades but suffered much at school. Helping these kids avoid noisy settings, reassure them, give them quiet social opportunities is super important.
Thank you for sharing your experience. We are unaware of a link between SM and hyperacusis, though we will look into the literature. This condition is considered rare and often occurs with another medical condition called tinnitus. If you have concerns about your child's hearing, you should see an ENT who can evaluate for this.
Thank you for reaching out. While SMA has primarily focused on children in the past, we are currently working to develop more programming for adults and teenagers.
