I have a 40 minute walk in to work every day and often stare up at the shapes of the concrete buildings, their silhouettes inspiring music as I wander. For my first urban themed jam I decided to turn to my TeenageEngineering PO-35 Speak, it's such a quirky yet funky little synth that it felt perfect fit to help inject some colour in to the city scape.
This video took me a long time to make, much longer than any of my others. I largely wrote the track and shot the video either from the bus or during/just after my walks to work back in the summer. I then spent far, far too long animating all those colour masks in Premiere (video isn't my forte, so I'm sure I made it harder than it had to be). I also made several aborted attempts at trying to record the performance as I kept getting kicked out of places when I tried to film it (the top of a multi-storey carparks mainly). In the end I actually liked just having the Speak against a plain concrete background, so it may have been for the best that the other recordings failed.
As usual, it was shot on my phone, with help from a gimbal for some of the tracking shots, and recorded with my Zoom h6.
I've released a new album featuring a reworked version of this track. You can stream it on spotify now.open.spotify.com/track/2mHKbyTrVzwEkDq8bJQSm6?si=gKmo2is3QdimWhYWRULh6w
Very cool
this is the only PO-35 Jam that actually 'sells' the Speak. I wish i could master it 5% as good as this
Ah, cheers Peter, those are some kind words.
Batteries, Beats, and the Great Outdoors it’s the best of the handful that show it being used as an instrument making music. It stopped me selling mine
@@barleyafloat watch Basecks jam with the po35
Found this video during my search for a new pocket operator and I keep coming back to it long after just to enjoy it again. The music and visuals come together in such a nice way. My favorite shot is the seagull flying along the building right after the intro, it has a particular energy that really fits the moment in the track. Great work, hope you're doing well.
Architecture is just frozen music. I love how the video communicates what you’re getting at with the PO.
Thanks Charles! And I love that idea of architecture as frozen music, because I've always found architecture to be musically inspiring - all the lines and angles of man-made structures just sing to me.
I keep coming back to this video. I've never heard another track like this out of the PO-35. Those short bursts of effects really do wonders!
Thank you! To be honest I'm rather proud of what I go out of the 35 here, so your comment means a lot. :)
This might be one of the top 5 PO-35 jams on YT.
Thanks man! Out of curiosity what do you think is the best jam out there? It's quite a difficult machine to squeeze something out of, so it's always impressive to watch a banging jam made with the 35.
@@missingreels I can't say exactly, but yours is definitely up there, from what I've heard! I'm a little annoyed, because a PO-35 arrived here in a plastic bag, instead of box, and the screen was already broke.
Ahh shit man, sorry to hear that. Was it straight from TE or another supplier?
@@missingreels Amazon. 😐
I've been trying to google whether or not the po-35 could do synthwave-ish music but couldn't find any results. this video says enough I think. damn! nice!
I'd say it's the best PO candidate for synthwave stuff. As a synth voice it's the most fully featured of any of them, though it's also the most restricted due to its mono-synth/mono-drum setup. I like it a lot.
Simply amazing! I have the PO-35 and I am trying to figure it out currently. This is super inspirational. Thank you!
epicc i want make videos about this
Amazing
Thank you!
keep doin whatcha doin
Yes! The visuals go extremely well with the music. I can just imagine me riding along on my commute through the city. Amazing stuff.
Perfect combo of architecture and urban beats! Thanks youtube algorithm for showing me this
Thanks for commenting and watching it, Tonao!
Love your music and videos. Do you find the filming and video editing side of things time consuming? I feel like that my music might suffer if I put this much effort into video production.
Thanks Steve! Yeah I find it massively time consuming to be honest. But I also find it really fun, so it's worth the time. I often have a strong sense of how I want something to look and can't bring myself to make the video any other way! Though I do also put out some jams that are just one shot, and they're pretty easy to make.
Great production all around, the beat, the mastery of the po35, the simple but effective video of the buildings, the pastel color masking of the buildings. A+ sir.
Thanks dude!
Can you make a tutorial on how to make nice beats like you do out of PO-32 and PO-35? I got both but I have no idea how I can ever get close to any of the melody you make with it! Awesome
Thanks for the suggestion. I've not tried making a tutorial before but I might have to give it a go.
@@missingreels Thank you very much! I would appreciate even 10 seconds tips if it's from you! I will be following :)

GREETZ!
Hi!
I bought one p.o. 35 but i am stupid ford music making. If i do not see this music form that p.o. 35 i do not believe. Great job bro.
Fantastic! Music and visuals work great together; the extra time editing was definitely worth it.
I just wish it was longer!
Haha! If the video had been any longer it would have broken me. I'm rather lacking in the skills for such things, so this took a lot more time than I imagined it would.
Wow! Glad I found this gem. Very cool. All made in this little thing? Or mixed in a DAW?
Thanks man! Yeah all made on this little machine.
@@missingreels Very inspiring, and great track!
Instantly sold me on the Speak, love the vibe, great jam!
Was literally just thinking if you were gonna do a jam with the Speak. Sounds amazing!!
I love the Speak, it's easily the most interesting PO in my opinion. Hopefully I'll have some other video ideas that suit it so I can feature it some more.
Simply a masterpiece
I like this channel very much, because every video is fantastic, fun to watch and nice music. One of my favourite channels of entire youtube
Thank you so much for those kind words, they really mean a lot to me. :)
Slabstep? Cool song. And I would not have guessed you used this particular PO. A lesser musician would have made speech obvious. Keep it up.
Uhm this is incredible.
Thanks dude!
Definitely, this is dope...
Can you please make a tutorial or tips and guide for PO35? I havent seen any jam better than yours and your insight would help tons for people like me how to use it properly xD pls!
There's a nice emotion to both the visuals and the music, great work (as always)!
This is so good. I've watched it so many times. This just shows how hard you can push the POs, especially the Speak, when you know what you're doing. Really nice work. Great video too.
Ahh, thanks Phil, I really appreciate this comment. And you're right, if you're willing to put the time in then the POs are capable of all sorts of magic - same with any instrument really. I think the trick is to not get hung up on what a device can't do and get to enjoying/exploring/practicing what they can do, then you'll start pushing at the edges of that.
@@missingreels Just curious, where are you located?
Bristol, UK
Oh My, this just beyond wonderful...nice everything!
Ah wow, thanks for such a nice comment Howard.
Lovely sound n lovely shots
Uhm amazing, just ordered one. Hope I can get close to the quality of your output on it!
Thanks! I hope you enjoy your PO-35.
Enjoyed that! Thank you.
great video, great session, great show captain! :-)
Very nicely done. Love the colored masks.
Thanks Martin!
Effin'awesome
Inspiring. I need to spend more time with the Speak.
cool sounds
feels good ^^sounds good
Wow
Loving it.
Cool music and outstanding video production
amazing dude
Absolutely incredible track, wow🦇🦇🦇; man I wanted to get the PO 24 but the Speak is so dope 🥴
Thanks man! The speak is indeed dope. It's limited but it sounds ace.
Brilliant !!! Both music and video !!!
Nice jam and I enjoy the shots of the city too.
Dope!
very good, amazing work! love your channel!
Thanks!
We should be able to like a video as many times as we want. I loved this tune!
:) I'll petition RUclips to implement some form of "Super Like" button!
after all those myriads of voce glitches brought to my ears and eyes by the speak owners this track is very impressive and the outdoors are truly great! i wonder how many hours were spent on rehearsals?
Haha! Thank you. Yeah, many hours were spent on all of it, not just the practicing but also the sound design, the sequencing, the filming, and the animating. I'm not sure of the exact number of hours, but it took me at least 6 months to finish the video (though that's partly down to my inexperience with video stuff).
Very interesting music and video, do you have Instagram ?
Thanks! I'm afraid I don't have an Instagram account. I find it hard enough to find time for one social media platform at the moment, I don't think I could manage another one.
I love this track! It's the best PO-35 track I've heard so far. Anyway we can download/buy it? Would love to have this track in rotation. ✌️
Amazing stuff, as always ❤️ how is it that you don’t have more subscribers??
Haha! I already have way more subscribers than I ever thought I'd get, so I'm flattered you think I deserve more. Thank you!
ummm how'd you do that turnup thing at the beginning of this vid? Love this.
what is the best PO to pair the PO-35 with in your opinion?
Well I only own the metal series (32, 33, and 35) and to be honest either of the other two work great with the 35, but I'd probably say the 33 is the most versatile choice.
@@missingreels ah ok, was looking at the 33 so will probably do that one. danke
🎶🤖🎶
Do you know how many samples that can play simultaneously? Four?
The PO-35 isn't really a sampler, it's a vocal synth. The synth can only play one sound at a time, though it also has a monophonic drum synth voice that's the same one as in the PO-32. So it can make two sounds at once, 1 voice synth and 1 drum synth. The PO-33 is the one you want if you're after a four voice sampler.
@@missingreels ok! Another thing, when the batteries die, do you lose your homemade patterns then?
Hmmm, I'm not sure actually. The batteries definitely last a long time, and I don't think I've ever lost anything when swapping the batteries, but you can back up the contents of the device and restore it.
Awesome! How did you record the po?
Thanks! The PO was recorder with one of my Zoom field recorders, either the H6 or F8, I can't remember which exactly.
Make a video with your Bastl Kastle and a pocket operator. Have been trying to for a while but haven't been so successful yet :/
I have an aborted Kastle video, though not one with a PO. I wanted to do a sort of dirty overdriven techno track with it, some Volcas, and some pedals, but I just couldn't get the sound I was after - though that was my fault not the Kastles. I need to break it out again and have another go.
All of this is entirely done on speak?
Yep, 100% PO-35!
Man wtf you killed all of us with that
Thanks man
