PO-14 Sub
Boss Micro BR-80 4-track
No external effects or processing, each song recorded live in one take

someone who produces whole albums on pocket operators shouldn't have just 400 subs :(
thanks very much man =)
that's right ! ;)
clock up another sub :O)
Clock number 700!
nice one! thanks for sharing!
thank you =) I have also made an album using just a po-28 robot, and an album using just a po-20 arcade. the videos are not monetised in any way and are solely for the purpose of showing people the variety you can get out of a single pocket operator, and hopefully encouraging people to delve deep into the possibilities with each PO. thanks again, chris

The bass at 11:30 🔥🔥🔥
I love the moment when the bass goes wuwuwuwuw
Me too!
Hell. Freakin'. Yeah. I love all of your PO albums, and I can't wait for the next one. The album artwork is also fantastic. Awesome work, my friend.
thanks Ty =) it's definitely tougher to work with the older PO's as you only have 16 chains for patterns, so i'm constantly having to switch during live play, and for the sub you have two octaves & some of the sounds are not very musical. I was intending to do something with the Factory, but once I started on the Sub i just couldn't put it down! being primarily a bass-player i love making groove-based music, and had a lot of fun finding & editing in suitable vocal samples. the artwork is courtesy of my wife. thanks for the kind comments =) chris
When you get that badboy plugged into a decent sound system you feel so good bussing up bare basslines
Very true! And the sub can go really deep
In fact I come to this ever so often to practice my scratching to :D
It's rather nice as there's rythmic, subs to follow but a lot of space in the melodies. And different material to inspire me in different ways. Yeah nah this is really enjoyable to practice to !
Thanks you for this !
man that's so cool
True that..gonna try that myself
Yaaay, I'm your 1000'th like :D
Awesome creation, dude! I'm about to buy myself a po-14 tomorrow.
Thank you my man, I hope you enjoy it =)
@@theycallmejpj It's great for playing live, so much power in such a little synth :)
It was doing great with Volca Modular and Bastl Kastle, very fat sounds.
@@heavyion awesome man, glad you’re enjoying it
This album is what inspired me to buy a PO-14. Simple enough to hop right in, difficult enough to keep me learning more. Hope to put on a similar EP or album some day down the line. Of the three battery powered synths I own, the PO-14 is the one I find myself playing with the most often.
Good stuff man, glad you are having fun with it and if & when you post some stuff up please let me know
What a feat!
Thank you man
This whole album is done on PO-Submarine alone? damn this is tight!!!
Thanks man =)
“Bad boys for life” I immediately looked up when I heard it lol. Awesome job man!
Number Juan Spot thanks man!
Nice work
Thank you man
This was a tough challenge, but Chris did it. Hats off!
Thanks David!
I just bought one of these for an intro to production, just messing around with noise😂 very cool to see whole albums!
That’s great man, hope you have fun with it
Amazing! Peace and Love
Thank you!
this is bonkers. amazing work.
Lee Kebler thanks lee!
First of all, fantastic work as usual. If the Robot album was a hard rock album, and the Arcade album was almost a folk album, then this was definitely a chilled out funk album.
That all being said, having only one melodic channel seemed to be a huge limiting factor, especially since some of the melodic sounds were so sub-heavy (no pun intended) that they couldn't fill the mid-to-high range very easily. Combined with the bevy of non-musical sounds (as you mentioned) and a relatively quiet drum machine, I'm fairly surprised you pulled something this varied and interesting out of a machine that narrow, and yet you managed to hit a variety of styles rather effectively. I heard a lot of different modal mixtures and even some effects on this record too; I imagine those were ways of varying the sound, right?
My favorite track was easily the opener, and had I been sat in front of the Sub I probably would have used those fuzzy wubby bass sounds to emulate a two-piece drum and bass, but then my album would not have sounded nearly as varied as yours did, so I tip my hat off to you.
Also, one of those songs sounded a lot like Dean Town by Vulfpeck. :)
thank you as usual for such great comments
I actually intended to do something with the factory, but once I started to sit down with the sub I couldn't put it down. I think the groove-based nature of this compilation is probably because my background is starting out as a bass-player, so I really enjoy these kinds of songs. generally I try to have an A and a B section, and will make 8 patterns in each with variations either in notes or percussion. even the songs which are very simplistic would have used 14-16 different patterns. on one track I ran out of patterns, so had to do live percussion for some sections.
you are absolutely right about the limitations. firstly a lot of the default sounds are not particularly musical. I coaxed a few extra sounds by changing the parameters on the A and B dials. the range is C0 to D2 so just over two octaves. you can do a little with the octave +1 FX, but it gives a weird portamento effect which I generally don't like (the octave down FX is virtually useless). I did use FX more in general just for some variations, and the Key functions once or twice, although they are a bit unpredictable depending on how many notes are in a pattern, and where in the pattern you activate the function.
the drums are generally quiet, but you can pitch them and also change amplitude with the B dial. sadly I forgot to do this on at least one or two tracks and the drums ended up too quiet. however I generally like the percussion sounds, better than both the arcade and the robot. the 2nd full-track on here (with the drum instructor vocal samples) is comprised entirely from the 16 sounds on the micro drumkit
also pattern switching is very tough when you can only chain a maximum of 16. I learnt that if you are already playing one chain, and want to switch to a different chain, you need to wait for the first pattern in the new chain to be active before programming the rest. a bit of a quirk.
I had a couple of other ideas, but they just wouldn't come out right.
thanks again =)
chris
lots of fun. I've had a wonderful time making tracks with just the PO-12 and a Monotron Delay. I recently ordered the Sub, I'm looking forward to it arriving and jamming the hell out of it.
sounds awesome, I think you'll enjoy the sub, despite it's limitations. have you considered uploading any of your stuff?
I have stuff uploaded on soundcloud (soundcloud.com/user-381986571) under the titles of MicroBeats ##, and bandcamp (v0xx.bandcamp.com/) though the later is mostly noise and power electronics, but I haven't gotten around to posting of RUclips. Maybe in the near future. Making videos for the hours of recorded music I have lying around and uploading it will require more time than I have atm.
dope
Thanks man
Just bought one of these off ebay by mistake, clicked the wrong button and bid. I don't muck people about so I bought it all the same and a bloody good mistake it turned out to be. This is fun with a capital F !! Great little album you've done here.
awesome man, hope you have a lot of fun with it, great little boxes for the money. cheers, chris =)
@@theycallmejpj I'm off work tomorrow, so I'm gonna build a nice little wooden housing for it with an on/off switch :O) Downloaded the pdf manual and I'm just trying to get my head round it.
00:28:58 Absolute insanity! Crazy sounds out of these!
Thanks man, it sounded even more thick on the original wav file
Just amazing what you can do with just one PO. Just like the other two PO videos, just stunning.
Limitations really can create wonderful ideas.
thanks very much dude. I totally agree about limitations being a source of creativity and a good way to avoid procrastination. there are lots of small tricks I use on these PO albums, and even though I know 99% of people wont recognise them or care if they did, for me they were part of the challenge and the learning process. people like yourself are exactly the reason I make these and it's really great to hear feedback and know that it's inspiring others to have fun with these awesome little boxes =)
@@theycallmejpj Your albums really inspire me! I have to admit i got an OP-1 before i got the PO's and it was really overwhelming. Still haven't produced a useful song on the OP-1 yet. Kinda sad. I like the idea of limitations so I think I'll use the OP-1 later and focus on the PO's for now!
Thank you for sharing these
@@particle505 i would like to get an OP-1 at some point, still kinda holding out for a price drop. I find the idea of linking my PO's somewhat intimidating, I think that's why I've been focusing on one at a time! lol.
@@theycallmejpj
Yeah it's possible to harm them by connecting... I have some problems doing so as well.. Yeah the OP-1 is currently really expensive because of the stop of the manufacturing.. But they'll start it again I guess..
Okay, I have another question: I've got some money to spend. I can buy like 2 more PO's. I own the Office, Sub and Factory and I am really interested in the KO (never sampled and that would be a great start, also own venyl and some instruments to sample), it just sounds super nice, in the Arcade since I've seen it (I'm into video games and it's also really nice to have in the background supporting other PO's or just to do some 8-bit solo stuff) and in the Speak. Especially the Speak would be interesting.. I don't think it sounds great or so, but it's something very special I would like to try out.
Now here's the question you are waiting for: Do you have an advice? What's your favorite PO so far and which one would u like to add to your collection?
Greetings!
@@particle505 hey dude, it's a tough question. I actually own a KO and Speak but both are still in their boxes >__
Just got one of these little bad boys yesterday! So much fun jamming out fat bass lines and this is super inspiring stuff, thank you!
thanks man, I really appreciate you taking the time to comment, and more importantly I'm glad you're having a blast with your Sub =)
Professional work 👍👍
thank you =)
WOW. Really impressed bad ass bro!
Thanks man, I appreciate the comments
Another great album. I have been thinking of getting a PO-14 because I love bass sounds. This is pushing me closer to getting one. Thanks for sharing!
thank you again. this was a really odd one as i will admit that some of the sounds on the po-14 are either very harsh or not very musical. i guess i would say it's a very "EDM" pocket operator, and this was definitely the most challenging for me. i do however think the percussion sounds on this one are really cool. i imagine that a combination of the arcade, the robot, and the sub would satisfy anyone for a long long time
@@theycallmejpj " i imagine that a combination of the arcade, the robot, and the sub would satisfy anyone for a long long time"
I bought the arcade first, it's a ton of fun- but I always felt the samples on that were pretty harsh tbh. I've been thinking about picking up the sub for a while cause I'm a low-key bass head. But I've been leaning towards the K.O. for versatility.
Rediscovering this album has be back to my original plan!!
Inspiring 🔥
Thanks for sharing!
Cheers Joel =D
@@theycallmejpj I ended up ordering my PO-14 after watching this video xD

Thanks Marco
Awesome stuff
Thanks man
the teen town is absolutely fablousooo
Thank you very much man
I love that little Vulfpeck reference you did there, one of Joe Dart’s best basslines!
Great Album!! 🎉
It seems to be very difficult to prepare a full album's worth of songs in PO because of the number of patterns, etc., and I'm dizzy! 💫😵
Thank you man, this was the hardest one for me to do. The 2nd generation (robot and arcade) have more channels of sound and can make larger pattern chains
This is fantastic.
DECIMA1 thanks man
Damn
This was really catchy...loved it thanks....Have subbed to your channel
glad you enjoyed it, hopefully these little albums are helping spread some PO love
Nice Take on "Wake Up"!!
thanks man, i wasn't fully happy with how it came out, but i tried!
that's fucking amazing
Fun stuff my sub commander

28:58 that is THICC 😤
RUclips compression tamed it a little because it was even fatter on the original wave file!
Hey this is great! How are you recording the PO sound into the computer? I want to try and make PO music too
Mongo Bongo hey there, I actually use a Boss micro br-80 which is a hardware digital recorder
External Audio Interface.
Select the Audio Input in your computers settings. Record with any program, such as GB or FL.
Best experience when connected with a decent drum machine via mixer.
Other way:
Analogue Recorder.
Plug and record. Tape done.
Nice!
thank you =)
bad boy for life? 14:06
Good spot Steven!
Whoa, I really like this!
Just a quick question, are you chrispottle on bandcamp? I know some artists who have had others upload their work and pretend to be them, so I like to check.
Hey dude. I do have a band camp site and there should be a link in the description =)
@@theycallmejpj Good job of me missing that!
@@Mnnvint no worries man, thanks for checking the videos and dropping a comment =)
Just now saw your comment on my vid, great work! This vid shows how versatile these little 'toys' can really be!
That bassline around 23:15, is that a RATM bassline? Or inspired by it?
Also can't figure out the one at 13:30
thanks man. it was a bit of a challenge as it's monophonic + drums and a lot of the sounds aren't that musical on the sub. and yes, that's a rage bassline, I think the track is called wake up? and that other one is bad boys for life =)
Moogy, Moody but groovy.
Thanks man
Hey man Nice álbum! At min 8:00 we are listening to a major scale i think...so can you Change scales on this PO?or you program it like this? Look opinion, is: you should continue with this albuns. We love them, maybe you are full of this PO gear but i think this you are the best até this matter. Please make a factory one! Or you can make a combo álbum! I am sad that you stoped this . Please keep them coming!
Micael Azevedo hi Micael =) it is actually a minor 7th arpeggio so it has a nice “chill” sounding scale. Thank you for the kind words. You can raise notes up one semitone using the FX button so all chromatic notes are available. I have all the PO’s and wanted to make albums that show there is lots and lots of room for ideas with these cool devices, and also it is not necessary to buy lots and lots of gear to have fun. I made two guitar based recordings on my channel since this album but my real life is a bit crazy right now. However I was already thinking to make a factory album! I have a couple of small ideas so hopefully something soon in the future!
Consider doing tutorials? There’s a lot of automation that you’re doing that doesn’t get covered in most tutorials
Hi Jared, I’m not a very techy guy so it has been a stretch for me to even get these online. I would like to do more PO projects in the future though, I just don’t have the free time these days. Hope you enjoy the albums
Grand uppaaaaa!
love that track
Well Mr CP You've def got this by the short & curlys, U dun better toons wiv 1lil thing, than some geezers managed with a studio full of shit, Nice 😎
Cheers Jon! Some guys are definitely all the gear and no idea! 😄
@@theycallmejpj Gotta say also you have hit a spot on one of my 3 remaining brain cells to pick up my 14 sub,(not got an ounce of ur talent) to just get a bit more fun out of it, than i did b4, now i know there's so much more, so cheers geezer
Hey what's the boss micro br 80 like for mixing? (long shot) Can you do any sidechaining? Is there a master channel you can put effects on (like a compressor)?
Hemrage hey man. The unit has their COSM multieffects, so you can run your signal through some common effects. No sidechaining. You can control the levels for each of the 4 tracks, basic EQ, and reverb. I would recommend watching the official Roland videos. My stuff is recorded raw, but there is a lot you can do for a cheap box not much bigger than a mobile phone
great, thanks for your quick response
Around Min 23 reminds me ratm and at 27 Pastorius
That’s right! =)
